[Q] Reader problems - Nook Touch Themes and Apps

Hi, I'm trying to read a PDF downloaded from Google books.
I can open it with the nook reader but it doesn't open in full screen so there's a grey background and the text is too small to comfortably read, changing the text size doesn't seem to make any difference.
I downloaded Google Books app and it looks exactly the same, and it doesn't give me access to the settings to try and zoom in or increase text size.
I've also tried Aldiko, the settings are accessible (hurray!) but don't display properly, so I can only see 'Brightness' and 'Orientation'.
Is there any hope, is there a way to read the book!
Many thanks,
Mat.

there are various pdf readers that work on the nook, my favorite is ebookdroid which have auto crop to remove margins, and auto levels correction which makes the text sharper

That book is probably a PDF made of jpegs. It is the worst kind to read on an eink device. You can use something like pdfscissors to crop the margins of the file before loading it to the ereader or use an application that can do it on the go, on the device - like Orion Viewer or Perfect Viewer. Or you can try to use OCR software on that file to convert it do a text format.

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately when I tried to open the book I got an 'unexpected error: cannot load document'.

Sorry should have made it clear I was replying to the post about Ebookdroid.

No more suggestions?
Still haven't found a reader that'll let me read the pdf easily .
Matt.

Sorry, didn't realize you were looking for a new and better reader! I'd highly recommend @Renate NST's Temblast Reader for excellent PDF and EPUB reading. Check it out.

Thanks for replying.
I had a look for Renate's reader before but couldn't see it when I clicked the signature; there are nook apps including a library app but no reader.
Am I missing something obvious and/or just being stupid????

I actually linked it in the first post I made in this thread (click on "Temblast Reader", but thanks to @kazikas for making the link a little more noticeable.

Thank you so much Kazikas , ИΘΘK¡€ and of course Renate!
It's the only reader that lets me magnify the page (overscan), the text isn't great but it's starting to look like that's the original PDF's problem.

Do you know that they are the same? The browser opens most files too. I only have the browser and have viewed word docs, pdfs, and countless pictures with it. Hope that helps.
i'm just looking for a decent picture viewer/editor that has decent zooming.HTC Album,S2V,Default Pic Viewer doesn't seem to cut it. I also tried finding a cab for Pocket Quickview but only has an installer for activesync which I don't have access to at work

There is no "piscel viewer" I think
search for "piscel browser" . This contain : internet browser, file browsers , pdf and picture views ....
Beside that this app isnt made not for WM6 , they ( the dev ) customized it and its not very legal. The best way to get it is contact someone who get a hold on it .
Pretty fluidy but I still like the HTC Album better, havent try S2V yet.

pdf viewer that fits text to screen

I have a book on my phone and its really hard to read because in all the pdf viewers ive tried i have to constantly scroll left and right for each sentence.
Is there a pdf viewer that arranges the text to fit to screen when zoomed in? like in opera how u zoom in and the text rearanges to fit to screen. I havent had any luck with any of the ones ive tried.
Ummmmm how about the adobe reader?
There is an option for "reflow" which is a word wrap.
Im using version LE 2.5
wow, i'm a little embarrassed! I thought that reflow was like a continuous page. Thanks for pointing this out.

Verry Welcome Glad to help
Another possibility would be the Foxit Reader for Pocket PC. It also includes a reflow mode. Haven’t tried it yet myself. The PC version is really good though.

Save some Christmas $$$ Barcode Scanning [App]

Initially accidently posted this in the Diamond forum...
Happy Holidays.
After reading a post here or in another forum I stumbled across a program called BARCORAMA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=368798
Its a program that lets you scan UPC barcodes with your camera and then goes out to the internet to let you find the lowest price online for that item...already saved me quite a bit...and made shopping feel sortof fun for once...fealt like a spy..LOL
Works Awesome on my touch Pro...strangely seems to work better when I zoom to 2x and take the picture than when im in close

Barcorama
I got the app working great on a touch pro.
Except I changed the default to pop open skyfire for the browser, and also piped it into Google shopping search engine, rather than just google. B/c in shopping it already shows the prices and places to buy.
Neat app! Thanks. Minor suggestion, offer the ability to put a path for the images and / or a way to name it when you shoot the UPC.

I'm not really sure what you mean by this. My search is

did you add the +100... in that string? Sorry for the silly question, and thanks for the help if you can answer.

open the app, go into settings and hit the right arrow until you see the google address. then replace the word "search" with "products"
EDIT: works well. i zapped every item on my desk at work and it found them all.

LOL...no, sorry for the misunder standing. I was trying to add credability to the other guys post of pointing it to google shop instead of just google. I wanted to just put +1 as in I am also wanting this, but you have to have 10 characters to make a post.
mine is not working everything i scan says no barcode i have the pro and question what is it suppose 2 say for program 2 run
does anybody have an idea of why its not working
Zoom in to 2.0 on the camera and try again.
still not working do i have 2 upgrade the rom 2 use this program
is there a cab file for this? or how do install this to my phone? just use sync and drag and drop it into my program files??
yeah I found Standing further away from the barcode and doing a 2.0 Zoom really helped...I make the barcode fill the screen and make sure its sharply focused before taking the picture...
...In terms of how to install...i created a folder called Shopping in my Windows/Start Menu/Programs folder and dropped the EXE file in there...You will then see the folder in your Windows/Programs area....i put it in its own folder because it saves each barcode where the program is installed and i didnt want them in my programs menu.
Yeahh....I found a new way to kill time and kill my battery...lol
I've run out of things to scan around the house.
I now know the best prices of everything in my work place...lol
I even depressed a few when I showed them better prices......
Walmart thinks I'm a spy...lol....had to turn of the sounds while taking pictures of barcodes....Security was confused too.....
This really is an achievement! Thanks to the creator of Barcorama.....
To change to shopping in google
The above poster is right, just change search, in the http string to product and that's it. Then it shows you a listing of prices and locations, pretty slick.
As for the person not getting it to work, it won't work if you're megapixels is set to 3MP, I dropped mine down to 1MP and that did it for me.
James
More things to scan
Hey noellenchris, don't forget all your cd's and coffee table books, or IT books....
I even scanned a can of Progresso soup and it found it. Crazy.

Keep your phone upright when you take the picture. I found if I turned the phone sideways and took the picture, it would not find the barcode. Keep the phone straight up and down when you take the pic.
I changed my camera to take a picture on Touch instead of Touch and Press. Right after it autofocuses, it'll take the picture. Getting much better results this way since when I would use Touch and Press, when I would press to take the picture, my hand would move.

Can't find an app to read pdf conveniently

Hi, folks
As you may already know, the Adobe Reader can't wordwrap a file, so you must scroll from left to right and it's tiring. So I tried apps like:
-Mobipocket: Can't swipe and sometimes doesn't recognize paragraphs.
-uBook: Font size is too small (even in extra large) and sometimes doesn't recognize paragraphs.
So, do you have some recommendation of pdf app. that preferably support finger scroll/swipe, wordwrap, and most importantly shows paragraphs correctly?
Thanks.
I thought it could if you used the Reflow view setting...

[Q] What's the best comic book app?

I was using ACV but I heard it was a big battery drain (And was making my NC feel a little warm) does anyone have a better suggestion?
I use the "Perfect Viewer" app. Just takes some practice memorizing the touch screen commands and it becomes very easy to use.
I second the recommendation for PV. And i tried a few others before settling.
Sent from my LogicPD Zoom2 using XDA App
Yup, PV is great. I tried ACV and it made my screen go dark and unresponsive. Didnt like it at all. Dose any one know if PV can rotate if I flip the screen/device?
Yes, PV can rotate automatically, but you have t change it in the preference menu.
After a couple if weeks i've really gotten the hang of the various touch options. it just might be my favorite thing to do with this
Sent from my Nookcolor
I used to use ACV, but am now using Perfect Viewer. It seems much snappier to me.
Hands down comic reader mobi. I literally bought the nook for this app.

Sorry if this is a silly question but were is PV's menu?
I've tried them all but JJ Comics Viewer worked best for me. I liked how it told me the page number at the bottom.
I didn't really like the onscreen touch stuff on Perfect Viewer and it didn't automatically go to the next .cbr file. Mobi didn't have pinch to zoom and was too expensive. JJ is quite fast and doesn't have as many problems with large files. Try it out.

Ill try jj tonight. The PV menu is invoked when viewing a photo. Use hit the menu key, with softkeys/button savior, and it will appear at the bottom as a whole set of options. Click the toolbox icon.
Includes option to jump to next cbr automatically.

Ok gotta give it up for jj comic. Does 2 things pv doesn't- zoom past full resolution and can crop white space
Sent from my Nookcolor
I've settled on the stock pdf reader for the NC. I have just taken all my cbz files, etc. and used Jomic to convert them all to pdf. None of the other other programs felt as comfortable, at least for me.

Yup, that did the trick, thanks. I also set it for Bicubic. So far I've only loaded one comic onto this thing but I can tell that when I have my whole library on here its gonna be sweet.
Can you explane what you mean by "zoom past full resolution"? Is that a good thing

Here's a question - how can I set the NC to open a PDF with the B&N Reader? If I open the file from the Library app, it opens with QuickPDF If I open the file using Astro I can read it using the B&N reader. I hate that I can't manage which file types open in each application as on a normal Android device. Any tips?

PV will zoom out (less than 100%) and use scaling algorithms like bicubic and averaging to make the image look smooth. But (to my knowledge) it will not zoom past 100%. The problem is that, when I use lanscape mode to view a row of comic panes, if the width of the image is less than 1024 pixels, it will not fit the width of the screen.
JJ will zoom in (greater than 100%) so it will fill the screen regardless of the resolution of the original.
I hope that helps.

I'm not questioning your choice, I'm just curious as to what was worse about "perfect viewer" or "jjcomic" that was better when using a pdf viewer. Because personally I find viewing comics on such a small screen requires maximum speed and flexibility in terms of zooming, rotating and page turning, and I've found the pdf viewers I've tried to be slow and inflexible.
If anyone watched me while reading a comic on this thing, they'd think I was a crazy person (rotate, pinch, tap, rotate back, doubletap).

Actually, as techy as that was, I got it. Made perfect sense. Thanks. I'll have to give it a try. I'm also intrigued by Mobi's supposed ability to pop out blocks of text but at this time I cant afford to try it. All my free money went to the Nook
