As a big fan of the original Moto X, which I unfortunately damaged beyond repair, a big factor for me in choosing to replace it with the 2014 version was the Moto software - specifically what used to be called Moto Assist. The ability to both detect driving and automatically read and reply to text messages was functionality impressive enough to impress friends with all kinds of different phones, iPhones included.
The version included on the Moto X 2014, however, has been much less impressive. It's subject to much higher latency - there's a definite lag before I can begin speaking to it, which means I often have to start over (and frequently time it wrong, after which it gives up, which I can't ever recall happening with the original version) - and at times it will read a few text messages and then silently fail and stop notifying me of their arrival.
So for those of you that have owned both the old Moto X and the 2014 update, I'm curious as to whether you've experienced the same issues - whether you think the new version is not quite up to par - or if it's that unique to me.
Yes there is more lag, the update today made it a bit faster though.

Cool, I'll give it a look. Hope it addresses the silent fail as well.
Now it is saying "Opening Google" every time Moto Voice isn't smart enough to take care of whatever you need. Which gets irritating.
I know beginning of November and beyond the nexus 5 will be hit up with 5.0 up dates and such... I'm just wondering who or when that bad boy will be cracked open for our consumption... Any how hope it's as good as they say it is
as soon as google dumps it into aosp, its ours to play with. they usually do thst around release. sometimes before, and sometimes after, but always near the time of public release.
as soon as it is available in aosp. Then we will get roms and such.
Yeah figured as much, will be cool I played a little with it in the preview of it and seemed good but then I went with Cyanogenmod on my N5... As also fairly cool they are releasing it too the 4 and 10 and 7...couldn't see why not seeing they are good devices with some life left in them
There is a Q&A section as well

Despite the release of kernel sources, why isn't there much development for this phone? Is it because most developers don't have this phone, or because they're waiting for the release of lollipop?
I kinda now wish that I'd bought the Moto G 1st gen lol.
Wish I knew! My guess is that they're waiting for Lollipop. Then again, this phone is still young. So not many people / developers own this device. And Motorola isn't Samsung or HTC. It's a small fish in the smartphone ocean!

Yeah I hope so too. I'm also hoping that a developer does comment here and make us stop worrying
Slow development??? The phone was released less than two months ago. Not to mention in stock mode it is already a kick-ass phone.
But as with all things, there is always somebody who isn't happy with the status quo.

Chill Bro! I'm not happy, but certainly I'm not complaining also here.
And why I'm asking is because when the kernel sources weren't released, everybody was saying that wait till they release, and we'll get speedy development of ROMs and kernels. But now that sources have been released, no development. I was kinda disappointed.
I had a s3 before, and that phone had ROMs in the 1st month only. So yes I'm comparing. Kill me

On a side note, hows your battery life mate, I can barely make it through a day.
I Read on gsm arena that the endurance time was 50hrs.But I could see my meter spiraling downwards
Me thinks somethings wrong with my battery :cyclops:
Bdw Im using a dual sim version
Same here. Sometimes the battery lasts long enough, most of the time is goes empty very quickly and the top right corner of my XT1068 gets warm. Not hot, but warm. Don't know about the internal layout so don't know if it's related.
Wondering if I should RMA it or replace kernel/ROM and hope for the best.

How come? Mine lasts easily through the day! Look carefully at the apps you're using: which one is consuming the most? Greenify it! Furthermore avoid using 3g. 2g Is fine for just Whatsapp etc! And don't use animated backgrounds!

No problem my friend. I understand the desire to improve on a good thing. I am sure we'll see some custom ROM's showing up soon.

I get a full day's use out of it before I have to charge. But I play several games off and on throughout the day. On days where I don't do any game playing it will last two days.
I am on the single SIM model (XT1063)
What do you have running in the background?

Pretty much empty.
I rooted and removed most of the moto and google bloats
The only persistent ones are whatsapp, viper4android and faux sound
And Im not playing games on it too except for maybe a round of pocket tanks and subway surfer and not using any animated wallpapers
I disabled my second sim just to see what results i get

I usually recommend this to everyone, but if you're having battery drain problems, just use ubounced, a xposed module. I had around 8-10 hours of standby, but after using it, My standby increased to 24-26 hours, and Screen On Time was around 4-5 hours. I don't micromanage at all i.e 3g is on all the time, no WiFi, sync is on
Do you think is safe buying Moto 2014 then? I mean development will popout? Or better buy 2013 LTE ?

I just think is early. Just wait for some devs who can relieve us but we should receive modding aswell! Wait before buying !
guys
sorry for posting here but i think the members here are best qualified to answer this question. I have a nexus 6 running stock rom on verizon and want to get my wife something closest to it but she doesn't want a big phone. Anything 5 and under would do. What's the best phone that I can get her that that has plain google-type stock rom available for it? An older phone would do too but unfortunately nexus 5 doesn't work on verizon
Thanks
It's old, but:
http://www.ebay.com/bhp/verizon-galaxy-nexus
Otherwise, there's not much but perhaps a LG G2?
Your wife would be miserable with a Galaxy Nexus lol That battery life on Verizon's LTE will be destroyed in a few hours. If this were me and still wanted to do some tweaking on the phone's system, I'd go with a 2013 Moto X Developer Edition. It's not a Nexus, but it's stock Android with some Moto app enhancements.
Excellent suggestion! I completely forgot about the moto x.
You guys are phenomenal crazies - sorry ran out of adjectives but this forum is super and that recommendation is super-super!
1) How long do you see battery last with LTE turned on (basic email, maps & whatsapp)
2) Do you see stock rom development continue on this phone beyond Lollipop?
Thanks
Yes, we are only perhaps a few months from the official release of M so development will continue. Battery life is subjective and is mostly based on signal quality, apps used and screen brightness.
how about the samsung s3. Is that continuing to get new development like M?
Hi!
Of course googling gives a general idea of them all but it would be great to know how you guys/girls feel it relates to the first gen Moto X, seeing on how I don't need to convince any of you of its amazingness.
I just resurrected my old XT1058 and for the life of me I can't see how any of the new phones out there are any better. I feel sane again holding it in my hand, something I haven't felt in a long time.
I'm a heavy user of things like sms, voice, calendar, and google maps and I'm quite happy with it's performance.
My concern is long term viability. I understand stagefright is dealt with by upgrading to lollipop 5.1 I think. But what about the future? If more vulnerabilities come out, is this why we might consider a custom ROM, for example?
Thanks for your help!

I feel like going Oogway on you. Yesterday is history , tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift . That is why it's called the present . We don't know what's going to happen when it comes to vulnerabilities ....
Long term viability you say ? I'd point out that the hardware is your main point of concern, Buy a spare battery . When it comes to software , I'll bet that after the first year, the whole voice control activity is minimal. The only thing that you might miss is the Active Display . Or not , considering that the "ACDisplay" application and inbuilt "Ambient display" in AOSP based ROMs have reported to work just as well as the stock ROM.
Your options aren't limited when it comes to custom ROMs either . Megatron007 is pushing out excellent ROMs at an alarming rate .
We have official support from the cyanogen Mod team .
Stock ROM (4.4.4) is rock solid and Xposed can give you everything else you need .
:highfive: Imma hold on to this baby for a while .
P.S
2 Years on and no complaints other than an unoptimized Lollipop stock ROM... Wait ! they covered that too . (http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/crashx-t3223361)
