There is some concern as to whether or not the LG G WATCH R's chipset has a dormant wifi antenna. From what I've seen it does, and we will be able to make use of this update. This is especially true if the watch urbane is getting the update since both the G Watch R and Watch Urbane have the same exact internals.

The GWR does have the hardware for Wifi. Over on The Verge's article, they quote the android wear lead product engineer, Jeff Chang, "it will be up to each individual device maker to add Wi-Fi to future products, or retroactively update old ones with Wi-Fi support".
This will be Kernel level updates (adding the drivers to connect android wear to the wifi chip). As you mentioned, the Urbane has the same internals at the GWR. If anything, the GWR should be the second most guaranteed to have the support (next to the Urbane).

I'm one of those with a concern about whether or not the GWR supports WiFi as-built. Ideally, it does. I've seen a couple of threads here and at the Android Forums that lead me to the conclusion that it does not. I wonder if anyone ever checked with LG directly to confirm one way or the other.

Actually someone in one of the other threads discovered that the SoC on the G Watch R (Qualcomm MSM 8226) does indeed have the Wifi antenna, so we should be okay.

So then we ought to get it. If LG decides to play stupid about the GWR, however, will it be possible to try and use the Urbane's software to get it running properly?

Seems this WiFi feature will eat battery, especially if it is struggling to access a weak or distant signal.

For what I could read on FCC site, the Watch R does have WiFi chips. It has been tested as BT, BLE and DTS b/g/n.

Yes it does. On YouTube I saw some time ago a video from announcing of G Watch R where on slideshow we can see info about wifi included in GWR. Google said that they start update from LG Urbane which is the same as G Watch R so definetly we will get working wifi

LG was asked which watches would get WiFi support, and they confirmed that the G Watch R and the Urbane are both in line to have WiFi enabled with the 5.1.1 update.
Correction - Apparently some sites are now contradicting this original confirmation, including Phandroid's original article on this. Not looking as good as before...

Unfortunately that was the same article I read as well; the author, Derek Ross, said Phandroid directly contacted LG and confirmed this, and Phandroid wouldn't have kept the article online had this not been true. So by that, I'm putting my trust in Phandroid's credibility to confirm something I had all but assumed based on their watches' hardware assemblies.

OK so my phone Android Wear app updated today so what do I need now, my watch to receive an update to see if Wifi and those new features work?

LG nordic has confirmed that GWR will get wifi-support
https://twitter.com/lappydk/status/590244926841053184

Now the question is "when"

Q?
Hi
so if I understand this correct, we need an update for the watch itself aswell as a wear update for this to work?
I got the Wear update today!

Exactly, you need both watch and app updated to use the newest functions

LG G watch R and Urbane will get WIFI - the old G watch won't sadly (since I've got both)
But as people talks about in the G watch thread, how much will it be worth anyway?
You always have your phone within hands reach anyway, and it takes energy to supply an extra antenna
http://phandroid.com/2015/04/21/lg-g-watch-missing-wifi/

I received an update today to the Android wear app with permissions to access wifi? But no Update forced to watch? Anyone else?

no wifi
But it says in the article that lg g watch r will NOT get wifi!!!
Update: A previous version of this article stated that the G Watch R and ZenWatch would in fact get WiFi support with the upcoming Android Wear OTA update. Since then, we’ve received confirmation from both LG and ASUS that those devices would not get WiFi support as originally published. We apologize.
that sucks!

gwatch urbane 5.1.1 rom installed to gwatch r?

if the urbane is now for sale, doesn't that mean that the factory image is hosted online somewhere? if the urbane and R share the same hardware, wouldn't it be not hard to make the urbane rom run on the R?

Since the two share the exact same internals I would imagine it would be as simple creating an image and flashing it on the GWR. However, we still have not received confirmation as to whether or not the GWR will have funcitoning wifi.
I'd like to bump this, according to the iFixit Teardown the Urbane has the exact same hardware as the g watch r. Wouldn't this mean that the Urbane stock ROM should work perfectly fine if flashed on the g watch r?

Right, so we just need the stock system partition of the urbane(anybody just backup the system prtition) and we could update to 5.1.1 and maybe we will get wifi

That's what I'm hoping for. Seeing as I'm neither able to get a sysdump of the urbane, nor keen enough to just try it out on my only G watch r, I'll wait for someone possibly more qualified to either correct me or try it out.
THE INTERNALS ARE NOT EXACTLY THE SAME
There are slight differences which could mean that the Urbane ROM will NOT directly boot on the GWR.

The hardware parts are at other positions but they are the same and i think not even at kernel level there is a dfference
The Urbane internal look like nothing more than a minor hardware revision of the R, they are functionally identical. Of course they may not be able to run the same software though, in the same way functionally identical computer motherboard revisions cant run the same BIOS. In linux terms though I suspect there would only be minor differences to the kernel in this case.
So some one find urbane system dump,I will flash it.

The OTA file for Urbane is available. But I think it's pretty much risky...
Wifi is going to be a kernel level update, rather than a system one. Obviously we have 5.1.1 now, which allows for Wifi, but the kernel needs the drivers to let it work. So as long as the wifi adapters are the same, we can try flashing the kernel over?

Same idea as anything else stated here. Also same problem as stated quite often: There's currently no way of rooting the Urbane and thus no way of dumping the system/kernel etc. As soon as Root access is available I'm sure developers (@intersectRaven, I'm looking at you ) will start looking into the Urbane and try porting Wifi over to the G Watch R.

Just Got 5.1.1 on my G W R

The watch prompted me - whole thing took less 5 minutes. Can't find any proof (or even suggestion) that wifi is available. The first notification was "Swipe to see what's new" ... and there was only 1 page of new to swipe through.

1. Why didn't you pull the OTA link damn you?!
2. Check the watch's setting menu. If Wifi is not there then it's not enabled.

Curious: do you have cloud sync turned on in the Wear app on your phone?
Cloud Sync Was Off
I thought I said yes when it prompted me ... last month... but it was off. Just turned if on.
No wifi in settings.
And the "up" options page (swipe down from watchface) has the flat tire. What? Did I want a 360?
Rebooted - still no wifi in settings
And that's that. We don't have Wifi enabled by LG. Next is to see if it can be enabled in another way (ROM, kernel, etc.).
I feel deceived by lg.

No update yet on my side. San Antonio, TX.
So no wifi? No biggie. I have survived without it before, so nothing has changed. Does it bug me that it's on the Urbane and not the GWR? At first, yes, because it was told to us. But thinking about it. I am "meh" about the wifi thing in general. I don't think wifi would have changed my way of doing things on the watch. I am still wearing it. I am not going tot sell it. My GWR still functions, I love my watchfaces. The battery life lasts as long as I do during the day. So I say it's still a win. We are still getting updates. Now it would be another issue if we weren't getting the update lol.

The thing is I couldn't have cared about the wifi at all either, but when I think about it's just going to open a window to not update the device further in the future, as it "doesn't have a feature set required for an update" or whatever bull**** they can come up with.

Does it say "Wifi Support" or "Wifi Capable" ANYWHERE on the box of your watch? No? Then you have no right to complain. Seriously, people, you knew what you were buying. Stop giving LG crap about it. While I agree that it's a bad move on their part to say the hardware doesn't support it, they are in NO way obligated to give us a feature they didn't advertise.

Hey, breathe a little. LG confirmed to Android Police Wi-Fi may or may not come to the LG G Watch R after all.
Android Police Article said:
LG has confirmed to us that the G Watch R may or may not get Wi-Fi in a future update. At this time, LG is unable to commit to a yes or no answer. According to LG, additional certification and other work is needed before Wi-Fi can be activated on the G Watch R, and they're unsure if it's going to be possible to get past these roadblocks.

Besides, if you wait just a few days, there will most likely be ways to cross-flash a kernel (and possibly firmware blobs) to enable Wi-Fi on the GWR, since they're basically the same watch. So wait and see, I'm not too worried myself.
So is this thread about the 5.1.1 update for the GWR, or yet another ***** session about the watch not having Wi-Fi? There are already multiple threads covering that topic.

There's an article about this on Android Police. They contacted LG and the maintenance update will come in July.
Good job LG! Doing better than some times past.
The Android Police article. Update coming "around July"....
The source code for urbane just released today also has a defconfig for lenok (G Watch R) which has an enable WiFi commit among others that reinforce the announcement that it actually has WiFi. I'm still studying the source right now but I think it should work with the necessary userspace support.
Yeah nice maybe you guys can be faster than LG
Out of interest, what apps will this allow G Watch R to use properly? Are there any existing apps out there that already use a smartwatch's WiFi?

Actually my app "Wear Media" (file manager / offline music player ) should use the new possibilities of WIFI (Channel API), but I'm also still waiting to test this on my G Watch R
But an user in my beta group could manage to use the WIFI on his Sony Smartwatch 3, however the handover from bluetooth to WIFI and vice versa is a little bit tricky to handle and this needs some improvement.

This was quite a big update. Mine needed ca. 1/2 hour to update with several restarts and I needed to reset to factory and configure watch again resulting in 50% battery-loss.
So, I have a new watch (that I haven't opened, yet), and I'm thinking that I should just wait for Android Wear 2.0 to come out before my first usage, rather than install an update now, and another big update in a couple of weeks.
What do you all think?

Well as far as I know its never been confirmed our watch (original urbane) will get 2.0 I don't know they have made a statement either way actuallu. Now if you have the lte urbane yes you will get 2.0 but waiting seems silly either way. You spend all that money on a watch why not use it?
Yeah not really understanding the thought process on that. You've bought it. Just use it and enjoy it. Android wear 2.0 will be a nice chance if we get it, but there is nothing wrong with the current software.

on spanish lg urbane site it states that this watch has 2.0
as a physical button is a requirement (which the urbane has) it's very likely to get 2.0 while seeing they are putting out a good job delivering security patches.
I've read numerous sources saying the Urbane will get Wear 2. And given that it's LG's last generation of smartwatch behind only the Urbane 2nd edition, and that it fulfils all hardware requirements to get the update, it really wouldn't speak well of LG's support for their hardware if they refuse to give it the update. And strictly speaking, the Watch R should also get it given that the only difference between it and the Urbane is visual, but as that is two generations back it's perhaps expecting a little too much.
I for one will be p****d if LG leave the Urbane behind with this update.

Any news on the Urbane 2 LTE update to Wear 2.0?

Not really, the complaint level of AW2 is so high, of laggy performance, we may be having a favor done for us as tuning is being done before we get. There was an update for earlier released watches this last day which is getting positive feedback. So that is making me think we'll get it very soon now, I think tomorrow.

I downloaded and saved the most recent AW1.5 and AW2 DP. I tried AW2 DP and it was awful, so went back to AW1.5 which I saved in case when AW2 officially released it is still awful.
We're being done a favor getting AW2 late but now I see happy noises on the June release, I'm seeing less reason to wait. But if there is a reason its no bad thing. The only thing I can't do is Android Pay.
If anyone does have the time to try AW2 then by all means flash DP and realize its a totally different everything interface, as I've been on AW now >2 years I find it awkward interface, noobs would take less retraining.
Someone likely has the googleapis link, I just have the file locally backedup.
Android Wear 2.0 fow the W200* is finaly here (well via OTA in Korea... For us via adb sideload )
Here it is the file: http://android.googleapis.com/packa.../af88cfbc96ad65e7b728e27c2decbdc6fb0e08e8.zip
P.S. It works perfectly! Android pay too!!!
Anyone tried the Korean firmware ? I didn't think 2.0 was that bad at all. Few things to fix but added a lot.

I updated earlier today. Made my first successful Android Pay purchase this afternoon. I never tried the preview so I'm still learning all the tricks/quirks of 2.0.
Sweet . Very cool , are you a US model though ? And did you use an OTA update or use PC with unlocked bootloader to flash it ?

Yes I have the AT&T model, W200A. I used the minimal adb and fastboot tool to sideload the zip file from my PC. I didn't have to unlock the bootloader.
i updated my w200a today with the korea version. however it felt more like another preview than a final release. Lag is present like on the preview, overheats somewhat easily and the battery drains way faster when you are using it than when you are on 1.5. At least this is my case on the w200a. I did a fsctory reset to see if that solved but no. Same result.
I have the at&t urbane 2 LTE (unlocked)
Until today I was running developer preview (nemo-nvf41u-factory-e269c504)
I had an update come through which has given me:
build number NXH20E
(ANDROID WEAR 2.0.0.159006699)
with security patch 1st May 2017.
The top and bottom buttons are working (re programmed through the options)
Android pay works.
I am in the UK.

I'm in the US and I updated using ADB and the file captured from the ota in Korea and these numbers match exactly to mine.
Found any bugs/issues yet? I've had an occasional lag or two. Android Pay is working and I've successfully tracked runs with GPS using ghostracer paired to the phone through cell data (my main usage requirement).
Not found any bugs on mine.
I have a few side loaded apps that may have been causing the odd glitch now and again whilst on the developer preview, but nothing since the update.
(Side loaded es file explorer so I could use MP3 ringtone on the watch & Google drive to download / upload)
I'm in the US with ATT version. Just got OTA last night. So far so good.
