gwatch urbane 5.1.1 rom installed to gwatch r? - LG G Watch R

if the urbane is now for sale, doesn't that mean that the factory image is hosted online somewhere? if the urbane and R share the same hardware, wouldn't it be not hard to make the urbane rom run on the R?

Since the two share the exact same internals I would imagine it would be as simple creating an image and flashing it on the GWR. However, we still have not received confirmation as to whether or not the GWR will have funcitoning wifi.

I'd like to bump this, according to the iFixit Teardown the Urbane has the exact same hardware as the g watch r. Wouldn't this mean that the Urbane stock ROM should work perfectly fine if flashed on the g watch r?

Right, so we just need the stock system partition of the urbane(anybody just backup the system prtition) and we could update to 5.1.1 and maybe we will get wifi

That's what I'm hoping for. Seeing as I'm neither able to get a sysdump of the urbane, nor keen enough to just try it out on my only G watch r, I'll wait for someone possibly more qualified to either correct me or try it out.

THE INTERNALS ARE NOT EXACTLY THE SAME
There are slight differences which could mean that the Urbane ROM will NOT directly boot on the GWR.

Please post a source, i can't agree with that.

Photo evidence enough? Yes, it might work, but equally it might not. We have to wait and see.

The hardware parts are at other positions but they are the same and i think not even at kernel level there is a dfference

The Urbane internal look like nothing more than a minor hardware revision of the R, they are functionally identical. Of course they may not be able to run the same software though, in the same way functionally identical computer motherboard revisions cant run the same BIOS. In linux terms though I suspect there would only be minor differences to the kernel in this case.

So some one find urbane system dump,I will flash it.

:good:

The OTA file for Urbane is available. But I think it's pretty much risky...

Wifi is going to be a kernel level update, rather than a system one. Obviously we have 5.1.1 now, which allows for Wifi, but the kernel needs the drivers to let it work. So as long as the wifi adapters are the same, we can try flashing the kernel over?

Same idea as anything else stated here. Also same problem as stated quite often: There's currently no way of rooting the Urbane and thus no way of dumping the system/kernel etc. As soon as Root access is available I'm sure developers (@intersectRaven, I'm looking at you ) will start looking into the Urbane and try porting Wifi over to the G Watch R.

Fluid in screen transitions

Hi,
Yesterday I get my LG G Watch R! But I'm not happy with that...
I'm testing it and when I open Wear mini launcher the transition animation to open the launcher screen is not going fluid! Is like the watch have lag...
Somebody feel that in their smartwatch?
I will try to update video this night!
Thank you all!

That is the normal operation in this moment.
Maybe future implementations will correct that.
In case you will use watchmaker for example, that lag is 3x longer ... it's like the time will freeze for a while .

Thank you ro_explorer for the fast reply!
I was talking with LG support and told me that is not normal! That a fail of watch so must be replaced!
sadly, it is normal - but hopefully not for long
you can try to switch to one of the Android Wear default faces (not the LG ones, try Simple)
there the delay should be virtually nonexistend
and have a look at this - its really bad on watchmaker, but i like the app so much that I'm putting up with it

This can be adjusted to be made a little better by changing the transition speed, I am working on a mod right now to attempt to fix this.

Ok 2k4ever I will report back!
But think about it, If I show a video about the problem to LG and they told me that is a hardware problem... and only saw a little number of users with that problem, I could think that the problem is hardware....
Then u mean that everybody have the last software version and only 4 users report that the lag is a known software? Something is wrong here....
I get this lag too with a custom whatchmaker whatchface.
I have finals all next week so I am very busy with that. I already know what file i need to change and how to change it. I went digging in the moto 360 forums and they have the commands there. I will get back to this after my exams.

Don't have lag like in the first watch
So if u have lag problems like video, share it with LG and then change ur watch for another one
Thank you all for the support!
About mini launcer...after install apps sometimes it become lagger...factory restart watch and often the problem will be solved (tryed now and for me works)
About facemaker dont know (i use facer).

I have the impression that any non-standard thingy creats trouble. If I charge overnight with a custom watchface, I have to reboot to get cards. With a standard face, never any problems. Weird...

There is some concern as to whether or not the LG G WATCH R's chipset has a dormant wifi antenna. From what I've seen it does, and we will be able to make use of this update. This is especially true if the watch urbane is getting the update since both the G Watch R and Watch Urbane have the same exact internals.

The GWR does have the hardware for Wifi. Over on The Verge's article, they quote the android wear lead product engineer, Jeff Chang, "it will be up to each individual device maker to add Wi-Fi to future products, or retroactively update old ones with Wi-Fi support".
This will be Kernel level updates (adding the drivers to connect android wear to the wifi chip). As you mentioned, the Urbane has the same internals at the GWR. If anything, the GWR should be the second most guaranteed to have the support (next to the Urbane).

I'm one of those with a concern about whether or not the GWR supports WiFi as-built. Ideally, it does. I've seen a couple of threads here and at the Android Forums that lead me to the conclusion that it does not. I wonder if anyone ever checked with LG directly to confirm one way or the other.

Actually someone in one of the other threads discovered that the SoC on the G Watch R (Qualcomm MSM 8226) does indeed have the Wifi antenna, so we should be okay.

So then we ought to get it. If LG decides to play stupid about the GWR, however, will it be possible to try and use the Urbane's software to get it running properly?
Seems this WiFi feature will eat battery, especially if it is struggling to access a weak or distant signal.
For what I could read on FCC site, the Watch R does have WiFi chips. It has been tested as BT, BLE and DTS b/g/n.

Yes it does. On YouTube I saw some time ago a video from announcing of G Watch R where on slideshow we can see info about wifi included in GWR. Google said that they start update from LG Urbane which is the same as G Watch R so definetly we will get working wifi

LG was asked which watches would get WiFi support, and they confirmed that the G Watch R and the Urbane are both in line to have WiFi enabled with the 5.1.1 update.
Correction - Apparently some sites are now contradicting this original confirmation, including Phandroid's original article on this. Not looking as good as before...

Unfortunately that was the same article I read as well; the author, Derek Ross, said Phandroid directly contacted LG and confirmed this, and Phandroid wouldn't have kept the article online had this not been true. So by that, I'm putting my trust in Phandroid's credibility to confirm something I had all but assumed based on their watches' hardware assemblies.
OK so my phone Android Wear app updated today so what do I need now, my watch to receive an update to see if Wifi and those new features work?
LG nordic has confirmed that GWR will get wifi-support

Now the question is "when"
Q?
Hi
so if I understand this correct, we need an update for the watch itself aswell as a wear update for this to work?
I got the Wear update today!

Exactly, you need both watch and app updated to use the newest functions
LG G watch R and Urbane will get WIFI - the old G watch won't sadly (since I've got both)
But as people talks about in the G watch thread, how much will it be worth anyway?
You always have your phone within hands reach anyway, and it takes energy to supply an extra antenna
http://phandroid.com/2015/04/21/lg-g-watch-missing-wifi/
I received an update today to the Android wear app with permissions to access wifi? But no Update forced to watch? Anyone else?
no wifi
But it says in the article that lg g watch r will NOT get wifi!!!
Update: A previous version of this article stated that the G Watch R and ZenWatch would in fact get WiFi support with the upcoming Android Wear OTA update. Since then, we’ve received confirmation from both LG and ASUS that those devices would not get WiFi support as originally published. We apologize.
that sucks!

This was quite a big update. Mine needed ca. 1/2 hour to update with several restarts and I needed to reset to factory and configure watch again resulting in 50% battery-loss.
So, I have a new watch (that I haven't opened, yet), and I'm thinking that I should just wait for Android Wear 2.0 to come out before my first usage, rather than install an update now, and another big update in a couple of weeks.
What do you all think?

Well as far as I know its never been confirmed our watch (original urbane) will get 2.0 I don't know they have made a statement either way actuallu. Now if you have the lte urbane yes you will get 2.0 but waiting seems silly either way. You spend all that money on a watch why not use it?
Yeah not really understanding the thought process on that. You've bought it. Just use it and enjoy it. Android wear 2.0 will be a nice chance if we get it, but there is nothing wrong with the current software.

on spanish lg urbane site it states that this watch has 2.0
as a physical button is a requirement (which the urbane has) it's very likely to get 2.0 while seeing they are putting out a good job delivering security patches.
I've read numerous sources saying the Urbane will get Wear 2. And given that it's LG's last generation of smartwatch behind only the Urbane 2nd edition, and that it fulfils all hardware requirements to get the update, it really wouldn't speak well of LG's support for their hardware if they refuse to give it the update. And strictly speaking, the Watch R should also get it given that the only difference between it and the Urbane is visual, but as that is two generations back it's perhaps expecting a little too much.
I for one will be p****d if LG leave the Urbane behind with this update.

Any chance of AW 2.0 being ported to the Gear Live?

Since there's no official support for the Gear Live with Android Wear 2.0, will there be any possibility of getting a 2.0 ROM modded for this watch?
There is always a possibility, but its unlikely that anyone will port it.
Samsung Gear Live is still receiving the security updates. Build M1D64T is on mine right now, a December 1 update.
To see it not getting the 2.0 treatment, when Samsung is no longer managing the Gear Live (remember, Google runs the gamut on OS releases for the Wear platform), is a shame. It fits all the specifications that most other Wear devices have that ARE getting updated.
In fact, the one device I can equate the Gear Live to is the Asus ZenWatch 2, which is slated for the February 9 release date.
SD400, 512MB RAM, 4GB storage, 320x320 OLED, 300mAh battery, it is 100% in range of the specifications. Yet that Samsung gave up on it means the death knell, that only emphasizes that Google only supports the relevant. I'm not shocked that the LG G Watch won't be updated, but the G Watch R will be... Is just strange, when specs-wise, it's the same.
Google's very strange about how they manage their platform. I'm hopeful we see some independent work on it. I can give or take the heart rate sensor if it means the device remains on my wrist. Any sacrifices that keep this device as my reliable companion should be worth it.

What's even more sad is that other watches with the exact same CPU will get their updates, but not our watch. Maybe its possible to re-use firmware from those other watches, and have a custom kernel with LCD, sensors compiled in. Maybe all that is needed is a compiled kernel module with missing drivers.
I am fairly experienced with Android source, if someone wants to work on this with me I would love to get this started.
I am not that experienced in Android but I have experience in software developing... Any chance we could get this to work?
A developer ported Wear 2.0 to the LG G Watch from the G Watch R and it works flawlessly. It could be possible for the Gear Live to receive the same port: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=7714&idPhone2=7718&idPhone3=7681

You can use TWRP loaded from fastboot into memory.(don't flash it to the watch) And then use dd command to make a binary backup of the system partition. Then transfer that binary file to your pc using ADB.
On your pc you need to unpack/mount the binary image somehow. If I recall our watch was switched to squashfs filesystem. What it means is that you have to do special steps to unpack it as it works sort of like an archive that unpacks during boot.
I don't have the link for the latest OTA, but this one is almost the latest. You can try to play with system.new.dat instead of extracting files directly from your watch.
