The browser in JI6 feels extremely laggy compared to the browser in previous firmwares. Scrolling is sometimes unusually choppy and going to the bookmarks page often takes a second. You might even see your home screen reload after browsing some heavy pages and then pressing the home button.
I started wondering if there was a memory leak in the browser, so I navigated to some pages that seem really laggy in the JI6 browser and checked the task manager. Sure enough, the browser is using 90-100MB of RAM at times and forcing other apps out of memory. If you want to try it for yourself, browse pocketnow.com (really laggy), engadget, or android central for a minute and then open up the task manager and take a look.
In an effort to figure out what was causing this, I have disabled plug-ins, uninstalled Flash 10.1, cleared caches, disabled javascript, and changed several other settings. While slightly less laggy, none of that has fixed the problem.
To make matters worse, I just received a notification warning me that database storage is low. I started browsing around and found a ~90MB file in /dbdata/databases/com.android.browser/app_thumbnails/ that comes back very quickly after I delete it. Not sure if that's the file causing the database storage to fill up or not, but it seems suspicious.
Also worth noting is that when pressing the back button in the browser it loads the previous pages instantly, almost like it keeps previous pages in memory. It wasn't like that in the browser from older firmwares. Wondering if that's what's causing the insane memory usage and lag.
Update
Looks like this is a known (by the community at least) bug that's also present in recent Froyo leaks for the i9000.
It seems to be a system level bug as it affects some other browsers like Dolphin as well.
I've noticed the same thing, but I kind of expect some aspects of the ROM to have debugging and/or logging turned on seeing as this is a leaked build.
Give it time and I'm sure someone will get this sorted out.

Asking the i9000 guys if their browser has stupid high memory usage in Froyo as well...

BAD news. Seems this is a bug affecting i9000 Froyo builds as well...

I can confirm that the browser in all the recent 2.2 leaks has some serious random memory issues causing close of almost all background apps and becoming very laggy and choppy.
Seems like either a serious memory leak or some other memory management issues.
This is not related to flash 10.1 at all as when i disable flash this still happens.

Would using a third party browser be any different? Gonna try out Dolphin or Skyfire in a bit once I get cog2.2 running.
So I guess the recently leaked (thanks to DesignGears and source) build is no newer than the previously leaked i9000 builds. Can only hope Samsung clears this up before official release.

Dolphin has the same problem so the bug must be in memory management or some kind of framework that both browsers use. Haven't tried Skyfire.
I am using Dolphin Browser HD and it does not seem to clear the memory issues.
Uses 145!! MB on the full pocketnow.com site before eventually FC'ing.
That's pretty rediculous.
I also ran into an issue where a pop up would say "No Internet Connection" and would ask me if I want to retry or ignore it, but if i didn't choose any option, the page would still load. Very annoying. This only happened to me while I was on 3G. Didn't try on wifi though. Anyone else run into this problem?

Yes, and it's very annoying. Somewhat unpredictable too. That and my cell data has been cutting out a lot for no reason, regardless of signal strength.
As far as I can tell, all the standard at&t radios suck. Can't wait to get a HSUPA radio & kernel running again. Faster speeds, and for me, better reception. Almost makes me want to go back to 2.1.
OOPS! I tried replacing libwebcore.so with the one from the G2 in an attempt to get to the bottom of this. Can you say boot loop? LOL, time to reflash and try something else. Don't worry, I have a better idea this time.
I noticed this as well and mentioned it in DG's thread. I noticed that the image quality is much higher than on 2.1 and the browser becomes especially choppy on pages with a lot of images on them. Definitely not flash-related.

[HOW TO] Fix browser lag in JI6 Froyo
I've seen this problem come up in other recent HTC devices, just thought I'd point it out for the Vivid as well.
I'm running LauncherPro with just a few icons, a low-resolution wallpaper, and no widgets. It runs silky smooth but the only gripe I have is that when opening the app drawer, 3D or standard, there's an incredible amount of stuttering and lagginess. Scrolling is not smooth, either.
The only other instance of crappy scrolling I have found on the phone so far is in GO SMS Pro; scrolling up and down conversations and also in the settings menus shows an apparent amount of lag. Nothing to cry about, but still there.
Otherwise, no performance issues at all on my device. Oh, and my previous complaint about the data speed being almost nonexistent - it's fixed. Turned out the phone was trying to sync all three of my Google accounts at one time.
Try a different Launcher? LauncherPro Might have an inherent flaw with HTC Devices possibly. Give GoLauncher a shot and see if there is any difference.
Yeah, I'll do that now. I personally dislike Go Launcher but I'll try a few others and see how they perform. I don't think a launcher would affect the lag in GO SMS, though.
EDIT: Lag is still present in Go, Zeam, and ADW launchers.
Interesting. Good to know. It is possible I suppose that they are not correctly optimized for the resolution and Screen size. Although if it is having problems with other HTC Devices my only conclusion is that it is because of some sort of Software issue between HTC and Custom Launchers.
Yeah that's all I could think of, how maybe the high resolution has something to do with it. Hopefully, that's right. Then it would just depend upon app makers to update their apps.
I see no lag what so ever on anything on this phone...
maybe ya got a bad unit?
Are you using GO SMS or any other launchers besides Sense?
This whole rom is slow in comparison to how my inspire rom runs....sad....but thats at&t for [email protected] software. But as soon as we have root,Ill be cooking my own for this, until then it can sit in the box...lol
WC
I have the lag you speak of and its driving me up the wall. Why did I give up my galaxy s2
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk
Calm down, it's not such a big deal. It could because of the greater resolution, much higher than the Samsungs. Not a hundred percent sure, but really. People need to stop being so nit picky and judgmental. It's a phone. In this world, they ALL have their quirks.
No lag what so ever here. Running Launcher Pro Paid Edition. I have 3 homescreens with 4 Columns and 5 Rows, and have 4 Widgets. 3D App Drawer with 5 columns.
Tried ADW EX and Go Launcher and found no lag present as well.
Once a debloated Rom is released everything will be resolved. But for me, haven't had any lag what so ever.
Hm. I wonder if the paid version would make any difference on my device. No lag in the drawer at all? What about in downloaded apps when scrolling?
No problem with anything on launcher. Smooth to me. I've came from an Atrix, Infuse, Inspire, SGS2 and notice no difference. So I've had my share to compare to.
I like the paid version because of the resizable Widgets.
I wonder then, what could be causing it on my phone..
I just tried the latest ics launcher, wow, the first few were kinda sluggish but the latest update is a breeze. There is no lag what so ever and the apps even open instantly with this launcher. I think ics luancher installs itself in a different way, i dont know why but it is smooth as butter.

I've got the same thing, paid version.
I just changed the delay to instant, and forgot about it.

I just downloaded the new ICS Launcher as well. Seems they've updated it really recently because I tried it on Monday and it wasn't nearly this smooth. Drawer fly-in is amazing, but now the scrolling through the apps is laggy. The changelog did say it was completely rebuilt.
Maybe it's a memory thing? LauncherPro was the very first thing I ever installed on the phone out of the box, and I think I recall that before I installed any other apps, it was running flawlessly.. low memory maybe, but I only have like 10 other apps installed. I'm back to LP for now since I don't really mind the drawer lag that much. I just switched to the 3D version and fly-in is working fine, but now it's the scrolling that lags more than the regular drawer does lol. Can't win.
I know it sounds silly but it could be something as simple as an app icon causing the lag. I had installed something from the market and I noticed lag (this was on my Inspire) and after I uninstalled the app it went back to normal. I reinstalled the app and froze it with TiBu and the lag was still gone... unfroze and lag was back.
YMMV

Yeah I believe you, good point. I'm just going to go through deleting some apps and see if any of them are the problem.
UPDATE: Alright, I just did a factory reset on the phone. As soon as it booted up, I added my primary Gmail account. I went to the Market then closed it so it would update. Meanwhile, I synced my Google contacts, Gmail, and calendar. When that was done, I went back to the Market and downloaded GO SMS - the scrolling lag there still persists. Then, I downloaded LauncherPro (unpaid) and went through opening and exiting the app drawer multiple times - seems the lag is gone. Every now and then, opening it will show some stuttering, as will closing. But it's not every single time like it was before the reset. Perhaps it was something to do with memory? It does not lag on scrolling at all, only during fly-in and fly-out.
UPDATE 2: Never mind. Now that I have changed the default number of homescreens from 3 to 5, it lags every time on opening and closing. Just not on scrolling, yet.
Hi all, just wondered what people's thoughts were on the best browser? I stopped using stock Sense because I preferred to swipe away multi tabs rather than closing them down by tapping the x; I know it sounds simple but I always found it annoying, particularly when I'd tap the x but end up missing and bringing up the page I was trying to close.
Anyway, have been using Chrome and that seemed ok but also wondered if people had any luck using stock android?
I downloaded an apk from an article in Modaco regarding stripping down sense and it seemed to work ok (I'm not rooted or anything, just installed the apk as regular).
I think I find stock android quicker than stock sense but not sure if it's just me wanting stock android to be quicker? In any case, there's not much between all 3.
Anyone else had experience with different browsers or even using stock android on their one?
My opinion:
atm the best browser for me is Chrome, for sync with pc and the speed.
The new HTC browser is optimized very good, i like it! Because the older in sense 4+ on the One X was very terrible.
Dolphin is good, is speed and no prob!
I don't like opera so i can't give a feedback
However, maxthon browser is nice too

Thanks, haven't tried those; Am giving firefox a run for today, so far, I'm actually quite impressed....
I tend to use Boat Browser now https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.boatbrowser.free
Mainly for the fullscreen ability.
I've had my HTC One for 7 days now
Been switching back and forth between Sense5 default, Chrome and Firefox and to my great dissapointment, all three browsers are mutually exclusive good at something.
Default: Text warping for better reading - really really useful feature that i've wanted all the time i've had iPhones (last 5 years)
Chrome: MUCH better tabbing experience ! - fastest browser...
Firefox: Best search feature... multiple search engines in the same time, by pressing the right button...
however, i tend to use Chrome more than the other two ..
The new Opera browser just came out today !
Has Text warping and coverflow-tab browser...
is built on WebKit, so its just as fast as Chrome...
check it out
I agree with those using Chrome. I loved it on my iPhone and now that Android is my life, it seems as much integration I can get with Google products the better. I especially like viewing desktop Chrome bookmarks on my phone. Also, if I leave a page (or 5) open on my desktop I can also view them directly on my mobile Chrome app.
For me
-Dolphins and
-Firefox

I was using the sense browser, but I can't stand how when you open a new tab you are immediately taken to it.
Now I am trying Firefox. I just downloaded it last night, and so far so good. Give it a try.

I'm using the stock browser at the moment. I tried a few others (though not chrome), and like it best. I use it in fullscreen mode, and with the quick controls pie navigation to maximize my screen real estate.
Hey! I just got the Nexus 6 last week and I noticed an annoying issue with Chrome: when the phone finish loading a page there is this lag on chrome when I try to scroll. It just pauses for maybe 1 or 2 seconds.
I tried Stock rom, then Chroma and Pure Nexus (after wiping everything ofc) & LK Hellscore Blu_spark kernel, and I have still this issue.
It's a shame I can't get smooth scrolling with such a powerful device. Otherwise I absolutely love Chrome. I tried UC firefox & Opera & I keep coming back to Chrome... My nexus 6 is very fast otherwise (I'm experiencing some lag with the GEL launcher too, when I swipe to Google now's card but I had the same issue with my LG G2).
Anyone else has this issue? Maybe there's a tweak somewhere I missed?
Yeah. Chrome is a very heavy browser for these devices I think. I have noticed that on some pages on the n6 and my s6 too
I can't understand how Google can't make a good browser without scrolling sluggisshness in 2015 on his own devices!
Is anybody else seeing this? The app drawer and the multi-task view are painfully slow and choppy when scrolling side to side. They're the only things moving slowly, everything else is smooth and fast. At first I thought it was the new gestures, but it remained after disabling that. Tried rebooting as well. Have not cleared data on One UI Home yet...
Went ahead and force stopped, cleared cache/data, no luck...
Before I did that, the multi-task window seems to have improved (still not smooth, but usable), but the app drawer is still horrible, and transitions in and out of it are inconsistently bad as well.
EDIT: Confirmed this is an issue with an app I have that had screen reading accessibility enabled. It's not a widely used app so I wouldn't worry about this. It's buttery smooth otherwise. Sorry for the false alarm. Had to do a factory reset and reinstall of all apps to discover this.
This is not good news as I have AT&T and have yet to get the update. Hopefully it's Verizon messing up and not Samsung.
