That is not entirely correct. The factory sysimage does not expose access to fm radio, but the hardware does have it, and it should be possible to enable. May require kernel modification.
Note that motoxpro (chinese market, exactly the same hardware just not "nexus") does expose fmradio.

The chip supports it, there's no evidence there's an antenna or anything else that would make it actually work.

No evidence except for the fact that it exists on the motoxpro. They didn't change the hardware. The antenna is present.

No additional support is needed to be added to AOSP to allow 3rd party FM apps to work on a phone with the dedicated hardware. 3rd party FM apps do not work because like the nexus 5 and 4, Google did not request FM radio support. We just happen to have a SoC that can support FM but none of the other required hardware.
Moto x pro is not identical
Might explain it.

That is absurd. It needs to be enabled at the kernel level, and probably also device configuration (overlays) level. You can't just use hardware when the kernel says "no", no matter what userland applications you install.

Well... the argument about it being a "safety" feature is wrong. For a safety feature, you would need AM radio.
FWIW: The phone also has an FM **TRANSMITTER**.

Please show me an example of a device that didn't have the FM radio enabled on any variant that got it activated by a "hack". You seem to continuously spout off your opinions as fact with zero proof of anything. Source for this kernel level change needed?

Again, please provide proof for your claims. Otherwise it appears that you are bouncing back and forth between two threads with the intention of only being argumentative. I would welcome any trusted, documented evidence you might have. By the way, opinions aren't facts. So please back up your claims. Again, have a great day!

The fact is, that FM radio does not work as is. Yes? I am stating that fact. You are making the claim that it can be enabled by modifying the software. I ask that you provide proof of that claim. Proof on the Nexus 6, not the Nexus one, which you provided an article for in the other thread. This is not the same phone as the Nexus one, obviously. The fact that I'm devoting time to search for FACTS to prove your claims, is baffling to me, as this issue is of no interest to me. I have Google play all access for my music needs. Yet I continue to search. Yes the 805 has native support for FM but without hardware to go with it, it's useless. Answer me this, if you will, why then does the nexus 6 wiki page say no support, along with other reputable android publications who echo the lack of internal hardware support? Again, I welcome evidence that shows otherwise. Until then, I'm done here.
If anyone is interested, this is what Motorola said.
our engineers decided not to include any radio component in the chipset due to this design is not possible to use the FM radio on the phone

Thats the shame 'bout HTC (besides da poor quality of hard- and software): they setup ONE hardware and make 5 PDAs with slighty changed details. they were never interested in making good hardware.. everytime they took something away the previous model had... now, they do have android and are able to clone nearly the same device just with another OS.
in commercial aspects, this makes sense.... but as consumer I can only think of it as a pain in the neck. my old universal has a high res display, a 3,5mm audioconnector, a well made keyboard and a fast cpu... years ago... a shame it is the size of a brick .
If someone would mad it possible to use the Compass HW with WinMo i would gladly set a bounty of 50$.
Goal would be a little App to proof that it ist working plus the sourcecode for other Devs.
Does anyone join in?
its probably another 'tv out' scenario...
basically the chipset has the tech but other required hardware / software is not present hence the features can never be used.
why on earth HTC cripple devices like this is boggling.....if the HD had been released with TV-out (which the qualcomm chipset supports) & a hw compass (to be confimed) it would have levelled the competition.....
i am sure their marketing strategy has good reasons for not doing...but as said earlier from the consumers point of view its a pain in the butt...especially considering some of us are locked in 24 month contracts.!! so wont be purchasing other handsets even if we wanted too.
lets hope some clever devs find a way to unlock these features!! (if possible)

I disagree your argumentation:
Developers here wrote drivers to implement TMC and RDS into the features of the Blackstone. HTC hasn´t done it yet.
HTC seems to leave possible feature unused. Maybe to save time for their developers.
The old topic of a missing video driver is another example for that.

50$ from me for unlocking the feature + another 100$ if anyone makes it work with Google Maps + another 100$ if someone makes an augmented reality app like Wikitude (Android).
Only if it's done before the release of the HTC Leo

I've read the same thread from Tuxhero and I have to see it before I believe it. The only thing we've got is a blanket statement that he has read it somewhere. Someone else created slight confusion on this site before with similar statements.
Not saying that he's lying (in fact, I hope he's right), a source would help. Until then, I'm not getting my hopes up.
Im guessin they didnt include alot of features cause when the phone was released whoever ws going to buy it would buy it anyway, and when competitors (Iphone3gs) release phones with features like the compass thing etc , htc can easily release newer phones with the same features ... sort of like having it ready on earlier models so when they need to release it they can quickly!
My guess

AOSP doesn't support AVRCP 1.13 which is the version that introduced metadata support. Until it does, custom ROMs the devs have added it to are the only one's that'll display song/album/artist.
Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP)
This profile is designed to provide a standard interface to control TVs, Hi-fi equipment, etc. to allow a single remote control (or other device) to control all of the A/V equipment to which a user has access. It may be used in concert with A2DP or VDP.
It has the possibility for vendor-dependent extensions.
AVRCP has several versions with significantly increasing functionality:
1.0—Basic remote control commands (play/pause/stop, etc.)
1.3—all of 1.0 plus metadata and media-player state support The status of the music source (playing, stopped, etc.)
Metadata information on the track itself (artist, track name, etc.).
1.4—all of 1.0, 1.3, plus media browsing capabilities for multiple media players Browsing and manipulation of multiple players
Browsing of media metadata per media player, including a "Now Playing" list
Basic search capabilitieshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth_profile
https://www.bluetooth.org/Building/HowTechnologyWorks/ProfilesAndProtocols/AVRCP.htm
As far as I know, no n4 custom rom supports it until today. Google will most likely never update it, don't know what the heck they are thinking.

I was waiting for someone to confirm if AVRCP 1.3 was going to be added in android 4.2.2 but now I'm planning on rooting and getting a ROM that does support this...

Does anyone know of a stable mod that does have AVRCP 1.3?
I'm glad that I am not the only one^^
Please share this bug report as often as possible in other forums. Maybe if enough ppl will star this google will react - MAYBE^^

That's all I was looking forward to also.
Its no wonder companies ignore their users when they needlessly and wrongly report bugs for something which is clearly not a bug.
If I was Google I'd ignore every single bug report which was actually reporting a missing feature.
For whatever reason, Google left it out, probably because its a niche requirement. It's not a bug.
thank god ur not google
maybe it's not the right category but at least I did something to point out that there's a problem and gave other ppl the chance to express their madness about this problem aswell.
And a niche? C'mon this is absolute standard nowadays and we can expect this from a 2012 smartphone when even my 2010 i9000 had it!

The LG apps rely very heavily on the LG framework, so the simple answer is 'no'. There are plenty of FM Radio apps on the Play Store though, so you should just try some of them.

Cyanogen have started to add support for FM Radio, but it is unlikely to work on our device. If you follow their G+ page you will see that it is dependant on the chipset in the device and they currently have it working on Sony devices because Sony support the Dev community and have helped them to get it working.
This is one of those features that, if it really bothers you so much, means you are likely to have to always remain on Stock ROMs.

Folks, does the P30 Pro have a built in FM radio? My Lite version for my wife has it (NextRadio says it does but locks up endlessly) and I'd like the Pro version when my Mate 9 expires and have a radio as well.
Can't find a P30 Lite forum here by the way. Maybe it's too generic or underpowered.
P30 pro doesn t have fm radio build in and that sucks. That's why I always have an old LG device with me, just for the fm radio.
Oh well, I will stick with my wife's phone then

This application for Android 2.3 - 4.4 only (not sure for Android 5).
Please do not install if your device have Android 6, 7, 8 or 9.
I did try it even though the developer said not to. "This application is not supported by your device"
Looks like her model doesn't even have an NFC chip.
No NFC in some models? Who does that in this day and age. I feel well and truly screwed. Can't even exchange for one that does, none of the shops near me even understand the problem.
FM Radios are dead because digital took over, not many phones with FM radios still working in them, my S9 didn't nor did my S7, and not even sure my S5 did
NFC should be there though
No nfc in MAR-LX2

I wish it were. I could not see the model number on the box when I bought it and didn't know some models of the Lite had NFC and some didn't until I downloaded the manual. The shop certainly didn't!
The MAR-LX1A and MAR-LX1M have NFC but MAR-LX2 (Which is my wife's) does not. Thats' what the manual states and I certainly cannot find any NFC function on this phone as it is said in the manual. Well and truly screwed.
As with the FM radio test that I did with NextRadio, I bet the NFC chip is present but not enabled and I'd be happy to find a ROM/Hack to enable both properly.
