Unable to hear calls on your Moto X? Here is the fix... - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had a problem when I first purchased this phone that when I received or made a call, that I couldn't hear the other end. Then when you tried again, it would work. You can imagine how frustrating this issue was.
After loads of googling for an answer, I finally came across something that fixed the issue. Anyone who is also experiencing this issue, try this out and hopefully it works for you as well!

No Call Waiting Alert: Please Help

Whenever I receive a call when I'm already on a call, I never hear a beep or anything to indicate that a call is coming in. When I hang up, I see that I have a missed call. Once when I was looking at the screen, it showed an incoming call (call waiting), but no "beep" or anything...
Any ideas?
Did you ever fix this?
I'm having the same issue. Just wanted to know if you fixed it?
.
Never got it fixed...
same issue
Upgrading cyanogen constantly and finally downgraded for cyanogen3.4 to 3.3.8, cuz my phone was shutting itself off every 6 or so hours.. Now, it is running AMAZING... Just no BEEP for call waiting.. It isn't that big of an issue, but still would like it to work..
I think it is something that needs to be PUSHED into the phone and reseting the phone and taking battery out will not do it..
PLEASE HELP !!
Hate to dreg up a post from two months ago, but I'm having the same issue on my G1. I'm running soullife's Rogers 2.9.2, but have experienced this on other ROMs as well. Wiped, flashed, wiped again... nothing.
I've been scouring the forums to no avail. It's been reported a few times but I can't find a resolution.
Could it be something to do with stripped ringtones or notifications? I'll fiddle with them and see what I can find...
Any tips would be appreciated!

[Q] Problem with Moto Voice

Hello guys, I've acquired my New Moto X last monday and I've been using since then. It a fantastic phone and everything else but I have a problem with the moto voice. I use it like, 5 times a day, works perfect, but after a time, and I have a theory that it's conflicting with other apps installed in the phone, it became too slow. Like, i say my activation phrase, it beeps but nothing shows up, only 10 seconds later a very slow and laggy version of the interface. It also happens when I open it directly from the Moto app. After this, I've done a factory reset on the phone, and the Moto Voice came back to life... BUT, after 3 days it started again... Then I done it again... And guess what in 24 hours the same error. The worst part is that I dont' know if they are going to solve this error, I have already reported it but I don't know... And if I send it back to the store to get a new one I'll probably saty almost a month without a phone... Anyone else have this problem? Any solutions
Did you try clearing cache?
Also, are you on the latest version 6.1.10.1?
Yes to both!
I found the OK google feature responds faster and better. Just as long as you don't want to command other apps.
I'm having the exact same issue. It's very slow. Same issues after factory reset. Also - when it does work, works with Google Now, but none of the MOTOX apps like 'find my phone' etc.
any resolution?
Same thing here
I have had the same issue. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times with no luck. The few times I've managed to get through the entire voice set up it ends up un-checking my launch phrase with in a few uses and moto voice stops working. I keep providing feedback when the voice app fails and hopefully they will figureboit why this is happening. Happy to hear its most likely not my device and an issue with the app.
I have the same problem and i may have located the problem. Try turning off bluetooth completely and see if the problem still exists?

Call Sound Repeating Problem

When I make voice calls, people on the other end of the phone can here their own voice just after speaking. So when I talk back/reply they hear their own voice along with what I am saying.
It has become almost impossible to talk to anyone because people just hear their own voice on top of what I am saying and it is really annoying for them.
I clean installed the official stock firmware and the problem still exists. Is it a hardware problem?
Can you please suggest me how I can solve this problem? :crying:

Yes it happens every time and I don't know how to stop this problem.
I had the same issue after unlocking the bootloader/rooting and installing furnace kernel, so I switched to the stock kernel and the problem is still there (from time to time). The only solution I've came across is to reboot the phone. Any other idea would be appreciated.

But when we flash the stock firmware, doesn't it fully replace every kind of customization? If this problem doesn't get resolved soon I would have to sell my Moto G.
Check this threads, it seems to be a problem since the previous model. Looks like motorola suggest us to clear the cache partition.

Lets discuss this problem here, we shouldn't hijack the Furnace thread.
I followed the Cache cleaning instruction you gave, it didn't have any Dalvik cleaning method.
The problem still exists after clearing "Cache" only.

Before trying a hard reset or flashing a new rom, try this. It's a solution someone found for the Moto G (2013) and it might help you out.

Just to make sure, you do understand that my problem doesn't involve "Not getting any sound", the person on the other end of the phone hears his voice a split second before they hear mine. Somehow their own voice bounces back to them along with my voice.
I still tried the method on the youtube video which is why I am posting 2 hours later.
Sadly, it didn't work. I tried calling my Moto G number from another number and from the other end I could hear my own voice repeating.:crying:

I know, I had the same exact problem when I flashed the kernel. Had notification sounds, music, speakers working alright, but every time I wanted to make a call there was no dial tone and no sound in my phone (the other person was able to hear me tho). What I did was restoring to stock kernel (I made a backup in TWRP before flashing Furnace), then did a wipe cache/dalvik cache. I can only recommend you to do a hard reset and try to install a factory firmware.
Pd. There's a bug that worths the shot checking. Go to settings → Sound → Audio Effects → Turn them off → Reboot.

Actually your problem is different than mine. I can hear dial tone and even the person on the other end of the phone clearly. But people on the other end of the call can you both their own voice and my voice.
So if they say "Hi" and right after it I say "Hello", they would first hear their own voice which is "Hi" and then my "Hello"
From my end their is no problem.
My Moto G is sending back both the incoming and my own audio data through the mic. The phone is only supposed to send only my voice to the other end.
I just tried having a conversation with a "headphone with mic" and I didn't have this problem. So it seems this is a hardware problem.
I chatted with Motorola customer care and they told me to return the phone for replacement.

Can't accept most incoming calls

I'm not a noob by any means. I've done all the normal troubleshooting. I've looked for other similar topics and none exist for this phone. I've tried everything that I can think. Having said that, please excuse me if i missed anything.
Basically, my issue is that I can't accept 95% of my incoming calls. I try to.... And the call hangs up when I press answer. I have the regular stock google dialer. I'm stock but rooted and unencrypted. I realize this may have to do with LTE still being on and not H+ but it's really annoying. It does switch to H+ but still hangs up.
I tried a few custom ROMs and the issue still exists. I've ensured that notifications are checked in the dialer app.
Someone please help me. Maybe I'm missing something simple. It's really annoying not being able to accept a call and having to call people back for every call received.
Please and thanks
And now I've officially tried EVERY ROM for this phone and still.... Can't answer incoming calls. Ugh. Someone please help
Have you tried updating your radio? Have you tried setting your phone in non-LTE so at most it only utilizes H+/H/3G?
Have you cleared cache and tried it in safe mode?
@zephiK thank you for the ideas. Flashed the new radio from your thread... Issue still persists. I haven't gone to just 3g yet because I use my phone a lot for work (law enforcement) and need the LTE speed when identifying people
Edit: tried using 3g and 2g anyways.... Still hangs up whenever I answer incoming calls. Ugh

I have cleared both cache and dalvik cache. I can't get safe mode to work..... I'm using liquid smooth at the moment and when holding power off it doesn't show the option for safe mode
Well I figured out holding reboot gives the safe boot option. My phone bootlooped. I'm going to have to totally undo everything on my phone. Lock and unroot my phone. Then I'll start over using only stock without unlocking or rooting first then continue this trouble shoot.
If anyone can think of anything else please let me know thank you and merry Christmas
I had the same issue with mine. I thought I was going crazy. Hope you get it worked out. I sent mine back to Motorola yesterday for a refund.

Update : Solved....
I wiped everything and started over. I flashed stock and went into safe mode. Calls worked. So it was easy to figure out... It was a downloaded app. A call blocker that was blocking everything instead of just the calls it was supposed to.
Thank you to those who offered opinions, suggestions, and comments
I had the same issue with the N5 on att. Was rooted and used a tool that opened a Sprint "only" service menu. Played with a setting and boom, i had voice. Data worked no problem throughout this ordeal.
Have the same problem with a Nexus 6, suddenly the phone did not show up any incoming call screen/window or way to slide out to answer an incoming call. It rings but there is not way to answer the call, even trying to go to the task bar and see if there is a window up there to answer it, no notification or window to press and answer.
This phone is not rooted nor have an application to block calls. it is with lollipop 5.01.
Any ways to solve this horrible bug? This bug is driving me nuts.

Ear speaker stopped working after update to 5.1

Well I updated my Moto X XT1092 to 5.1 yesterday. Since then, the ear speaker has stopped working during both incoming calls and outgoing calls. I can hear everything clearly while on loud speaker, however i can't hear a thing while enabling the ear speaker. The person I am talking to can hear everything though. After the update, i cleaned the device using clean master. I haven't done a factory reset yet and haven't done anything in the recovery either, hoping there is an easier fix to it. Can anybody help me fix it?
I am having the exact same issue. But in my case the earpiece worked initially and suddenly stopped working from yesterday. I tried rebooting the phone as well as rebooting in safe mode. Both didnt help. I also tried to clear the cache and data for the phone and dialer app, which didnt help either? I am planning to do a factory reset. Will that have any impact? I was on 5.0 pure edition when i sideloaded the 5.1 soak LPE23.32-14.
I forgot to mention that the earpiece worked initially in my case too. I did make one phone call and everything was fine till that point. And then it all started few minutes later. I did an ota update and I really wasn't expecting such issue. So if clearing cache and the dialler didn't help you fix the issue, I guess our only option is to factory reset. Let me know if factory resetting fixes the issue.

UPDATE:Finally got it working after updating to the latest build 23.16.3 posted in the general section
Nothing has worked for me so far. Is your phone xt1905? Well mine is xt1902 and I had updated it through ota before the entire issue started, and the build is 23.16.1. So I guess I'm already on the latest build. Do you have any suggestion regarding what i should do?
Hi,

Someone over in the Motorola forums suggested checking to see if hearing aid compatibility was enabled in the settings of the dialer, and disabling it if it was.

please note : Go to dialer and disable hearing aid, earpiece will start working.
No need of factory reset
I haven't updated to 5.1 and hearing aid isn't enabled.. Only thing I can think of is the dictionary update wifi required notification being the last thing that was done before losing sound in the ear piece. To remove dictionary updates is there a specific app I can clear data from?

You legend, this worked! I've been trying everything. How the hell did they get enabled during the 5.1 update?
I found it a bit weird that it was working after factory reset and then suddenly stopped.
found this thread because my earpiece stopped working today. stock android 5.1 att moto x 2014. tried a bunch of stuff (hearing aid, wipe cache, reboot,..) didnt work. What did work for me was as simple as it gets. in my settings i turned everything off except cell signal (wifi, blutooth, location, screen rotate...) tried a call it worked. Dont know why or how but it did. havent tried turning everything back on yet. a bit scared to. Hope this helps someone.
!!UPDATE!! I do not think that helped . went out again and turning everything off didnt work.... So i back tracked to what I did before turning everything off. that step got my speaker back again for now at least. What that step was is i called my voicemail and inserted headphones in and out a couple times. I am thinking that the dialer thinks there are headphones plugged in so no speaker. I also believe it has to do with the dialer software since all other sounds and apps come out loudspeaker. using internal speaker test app internal speaker does not work when it is out. If it goes out again i will try headphones in that app to see if that resets it.
on I side note i just realized all my homescreen apps and widgets are gone. they are still installed just not on homescreen
So did anyone reach an effective solution regarding this issue or determined the root cause? It just happened to me today and i have been trying everything i have read online but nothing worked. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
what finally worked for me was cleaning headphone jack. you can do this at your own risk. i pulled most of cotton off a qtip. put alcohol on it and cleaned it. i did not think this was problem because any app that used the loudspeaker worked even calling worked with speakerphone. so my thinking was it is not dirty but i cleaned it and have not had a problem for about 2 weeks now.

Found the solution, it was water damage actually.
My mom forgot to tell me that water went in through the headphone jack.
And as water conducts electricity the phone thought headphones were plugged in. Cleaning it with a cloth and a toothpick and then shaking the phone a few times fixed it.
I think that's why cleaning your headphone jack fixed it as well affiatic, water went in probably.
My friend is suffering from the same situation.
1. Tried clearing data + cache for dialer app.
2. Hearing aid compatibility disabled.
3. Did factory reset.
Nothing has worked so far.

Have you ever tried to make or receive a call on your Moto X and you hear nothing on the other side, almost as if there isn’t even a connection made? Then when you try to call again, for some reason it works?
If you have experienced this, you also understand how frustrating it can be when you have to hang up and dial again, just to make a simple call. This problem plagued me for months of owning my 2014 Moto X, searching everywhere for a resolution to this hugely annoying problem. It wasn’t only me who was experiencing this issue either. A friend with the same phone was having the exact same problem as I, however it was impacting them even more, since it was used for their business. At this point, I figured that it wasn’t only the both of us experiencing the issue, but potentially many others owners as well. After much more searching, I came across a similar issue on a different phone, which listed some ideas to fix the issue. To my surprise, when I completed the process, the problem was fixed and has yet to return. Here is what I did…
Fix Inability to Hear Calls on Moto X
I had tried many different things to fix this issue, such as switching from Dalvik to Art, then back to Dalvik again. Rebooting the phone also didn’t seem to help much at all. Now for what fixed the error (scroll below for the steps).
First, I wanted to clear all cache, as that can sometimes fix simple issues. After I had entered the Recovery menu and cleared the cache, I noticed the problem had stayed away for a bit longer than a reboot, but eventually it came back again. Next, I put the phone into Safe Mode. Once the phone rebooted into Safe Mode, I shut down the device and plugged it in to my wall charger for two hours. To my surprise, after two hours when I turned my phone back on and tried making a call, I could hear the other side. The problem was gone and has yet to return, months later.
Anybody that has experienced this same issue, should try the steps below. It may just make your phone much less frustrating to operate.
Putting the Moto X into Recovery Mode to Delete Cache:
1. Power off your phone, by pressing down the power button until the power menu pops up and selecting*Power Off.
2. Wait a few seconds, then proceed to next step.
3. Hold down the*Volume Down*for a second, the while still holding down the*Volume Downbutton, also hold down the*Power Button*for about 3 seconds, then let go of*Power Button. If you did this correctly, you will see the*Boot Menu.
[http://salloiacono]4. Press the*Volume Down*button, until you have*Recovery*highlighted. Then pressVolume Up*to select*Recovery.
5. Your phone will appear to reboot and you should see this little guy.
Don’t worry, you didn’t break anything.
6. Now you must enter the*Recovery Menu.
– For Android 4.4.4: Hold down the*Volume Up*button for about 10-15 seconds and while holding that down, press the*Power Button. You should see a new menu pop up.
– For Android 5.0: Hold down the*Power Button*for a few seconds and while holding that down, press the*Volume Up*key. You should see a new menu pop up.
7. Press*Volume Down*until you have*Wipe Cache Partition*highlighted, then press thePower Button.*Your phone will now reboot. It is time for the next step.
Putting your Moto X into Safe Mode
1. Once your phone has fully rebooted, you are now ready to put your phone into*Safe Mode. Hold down the*Power Button*until thePower Menu*pops up. Now press and hold thePower Off*button.
2. After a few seconds, you should see a new window pop up warning about*Safe Mode. Press*OK. Your phone will now reboot intoSafe Mode.
3. Once your phone reboots into*Safe Mode,Power Off*your phone.
4. With your phone powered off, plug it into your wall charger for 2 hours.
5. After 2 hours, you may unplug your phone and turn it back on. Now you should be able to make and receive calls without the issues you were experiencing before!
Hope this works as well for you as it did for me!
