Group Text: Reply texts coming back as individual texts
I'm getting the reply texts individually instead of within the group text that I started. Is this normal?

Thanks for the reply. When I had the HTC One M8 I think it worked where the reply texts were within the same group thread. I know iphones work the same way too - within the same group thread.
I've tried googling and searching on XDA and can't find a setting to have it work that way. Maybe I'll go back to stock and see if it works - as soon as I got the N6 I had rooted/rom it.

So that's normal behavior for group text? Oh well. It's still a great phone.

Well, it seems to be somewhat normal. I sent my first group text yesterday and the first couple responses seemed to be in group form but then the replies came individually. It may be related to how the recipient responds. If they respond directly to the group text or if they create a new message in response. So I guess I'm not 100% sure on this then lol. You should ask your recipients how they responded.

Just tested it on my work phone. It is because of the setting on my work phone! I didn't have the MMS Group setting checked. Now my N6 is receiving the group thread as expected. You'd think that that would be on by default though. Now I've got to tell my friends on Android to make sure that's checked on. Thanks!

Currently I am running the latest cyanogen mod on my g1 and for the past few updates my email won't update with new messages. The only way to get new emails is to do a manual update. My twitter updates as it always has.
Thoughts?
Hmmm lets c....u want ur email to autoupdate.....now if only there were such an option in settings somewhere
Btw, u posted in the wrong forum. There is a forum section labelled Q/A....since u have a question and want an answer, id assume tht section would be appropriate.
Thank you for the quick reply and the insightful suggestion. I did however already check to make sure that the autoupdate box was checked.
My apologies for posting in the wrong section. I will be sure start a new post somewhere else...
I just figured since I'm running a mod and this seems to be a bug of some kind perhaps, I'd post here.
Perhaps posting in the cyanogenmod thread would be appropriate, then.

This is not an SMS or Twitter! You have more than 160 chars to work with, so stop writing like that!
I guess I should have clarified...
The update interval on email (imap) accounts is set to 1 hour.
I was talking about gmail and from what I can see there is no selection for update interval. Only data sync under settings which is all checked.

I've had this problem before, I would completely wipe and reinstall cyanogenmod (Wipe, Htc recovery, the whole 6 miles)
I was kinda of afraid that it would come to that.
Thanks for the input and no flameage...

dude... this isn't a debate either, so don't start random arguments.
I had the same issue, and a full wipe sorted it for me.
Cheers! Thanks for the heads up
I'm also having this problem (with the Work Email app though). Think i'm going to wait until some 2.1 Eclair builds start appearing though before I do a full wipe.
A wipe seems to have fixed my gmail issue. The other issue I have is with SMS messages. Not sure if it's a problem with my phone or google voice though. For some reason i'm not getting my GV messages right away. This might be a short coming of GV.

which voice app are you using?
I'm using the app from google. If I set up the app to check for messages every 5 minutes it works great.
They way I'd like to have it set up is that Google will send me an actual SMS message. Allowing me to reply to that SMS as I normally would. Not via the Voice app.
Please state the MOD number instead of "the latest". Makes it better for everybody. Thanks

I get mine instantly, I think it is a shortcoming of the app. If I don't have the app it is instant, if I do then it comes at scheduled times. Try it without the app (It's just an interface anyway, you can get the same things through email)
I think I will try uninstalling the app and see what happens.
Thanks!
So, I just upgraded from my old 4S to the moto x. i love it. It is really fast and snappy and does all the things i do exceptionally well.... except for one thing... group messaging. I can send messages out to a group, however when people reply to me the messages get sorted into separate threads from anyone on an android. it seems weird, and i have checked the MMS settings and they are all there. tried speaking with Motorola and they said it's working as intended. Was wondering if anyone else had this issue.
Also, i am on Verizon.
Thank you in advance,
-Jim
Just a heads up for anyone having this issue.
I read through some other threads and no one had an answer, i figured i'd update everyone and let them know what i found. I download Textra, this allowed me to get all my messages in one group thread. I even went back to the default texting app and all the messages were grouped. I then went and removed textra. the threads then split up again.
Long story short, it looks as though there may be some settings that you don't get the privilege of seeing with the default app. at this point textra is working and using super minimal resources so i'm ok with this.

I like to try to get everyone on hangouts since almost everyone has a gmail account and it is multi-platform. I know that's not a solution to group messaging with the messaging app, but it's a great alternative I think.
Good idea,
yea, it is a good idea, i just feel like a **** telling all of my friends to use that for only me haha. this is working great and you can just use standard text messaging/mms.
Group messaging works fine on the Moto X. There does appear to be a SIM provisioning problem on some phones that can be fixed:

Edit: I just re-read the OP - this may not be the same issue... take a look though and see.

Yea I read that. I went in and I can see my phone number, I can also send the messages as MMS. For some reason when I get the replies they get split into different threads. Now that I use the textra app is has started working as it should. The weird part is it now works as it should in the stock app. Idk what behind the scenes settings it alters.

I have a verizon dev unit that is able to send and receive group MMS fine. So far I have only tested it with other phones on verizon though. Do you have the group messaging option turned on in the messaging settings?
Yup I went in and selected the group messaging option. The weird thing is that textra adds more options than my stock messaging app. Idk if its something that textra enables that for some reason I can't see in the normal settings. The pic with 17 at the end is my phone settings. The one with 66 is the textra app.

Replaced phone
So I spent about an hour and a half in total with verizon tech support and they had no idea why this is happening. I then went in and had them replace the phone at the store, sent a text before i even loaded any google accounts or settings. This issue still happened. I am kind of annoyed, but i guess i will have to try and wait for 4.4 to see if it fixes it.
I also use Textra for MMS, the stock messaging has never kept MMS in the same group for me on any of my phones. It is not a problem with the phone just Android's stock message app...kinda sucks, I've always hated it and I never use it. Textra is my newest favorite. Hoping Hangouts does a good job but until then I'm satisfied.
My group messaging worked just fine on stock messenger. Now with hangouts its still working just as good. Never really had a problen

It has to be a provisioning problem if it followed you to a new phone. Have you tried your SIM card in a completely different phone that supports group messaging? I know that VZW has been doing group messaging for a while now. It may be different in stock Android (group messaging didn't work until 4.2).
Another thought: do you have a different phone that you can install CM 10+ on? I believe that does group messaging in the same way that stock 4.2+ does. That would be another way to confirm the problem is with the carrier, but doing it at a VZW store on one of their phones would carry more weight.

I did not try a phone at the store, but it did follow me to a new moto x without even logging into any google accounts or anything. i unfortunately do not have any other phone that i could swap sims with to test this. It did work perfectly fine on my iphone 4s before though. Not sure if it was IOS messaging app fixing the issue with my network or not. It's odd that other apps seem to work perfectly fine though. At this point i'm going to wait for 4.4 and see if it works. VZW tech support in store and via phone have no clue.
I got my Moto X developer edition and the group messaging was working like a charm UNTIL I tried the texting from my computer application in chrome. since then, all my group texts are separated by user instead of thread.

I'm assuming Motorola Connect. Same thing happened with me, but now with SMS Hangouts, everything is fine.
This has been asked in other places for other phones, but I've never seen this answered. Here's the scenario:
1. I receive a group text normally
2. I respond to the group text a few times and it works fine as a group text
3. I respond again to the same group text and it suddenly sends my message to each person individually
This is maddening! I am using a VZ Moto Maker. Still on 4.4 cuz I don't want to ruin root. Using Handcent, but I've experienced this with stock app as well.
Any ideas?

Talk to verizon. Group messages are sent as mms witch uses the data side of your phone. It could just be a sim card or settings issue on there side. Are you getting all of the picture messages you are sent and do your picture messages send without issue?

Happy holidays everyone.
a few days ago I received a group text message on a few days back with about 14 people in the group. (merry christmas everyone!) I wanted to reply back but the send button never gets highlighted to be able to send.
a few hours later i received another group text message with a bunch of different recipients (there were some same recipients too). I was able to reply back to this one with no issue.
What is going on here? Is there some setting i'm not looking at?
running stock DOK2 firmware. Just received this phone less than a week ago and barely have any apps loaded on it.
There is a limit for group messaging on the stock messaging app (10 people). If you want to test it out, try to create a group text with 10 or less and the send icon will be available, when you go above 10 it will not.

I had no idea. It was so frustrating. What is their reasoning for this? Is that even documented anywhere? what's the workaround?

Not sure what the reasoning is, but I just recall that the limit has always been 10 for group messaging within the default app (Android devices).
I use Textra right now as it works well for texting over Wifi. But most 3rd party texting apps don't have the 10 person limit.
Hey guys. I'm coming from a S7 so I will use that as a reference for what I'm trying to do.
On the S7 if I sent a text message to two or more people I can reply all in the same thread or had the option via a little check box to send the messages individually. However, when I send or receive a group message I'm getting individual messages.
It sucks because if someone sent me a group text I can't see who else they sent the message too. And if I can only reply to it individually not as a single thread.
I hope I explained this properly. Does anyone know if there is a setting I'm missing here or is this "feature" not supported on MIUI stock messenger app?

I'm with you...I tried editing APN's, multiple 3rd party apps, etc. and can't get a solution. It's one of the things I have to live with for the time being.
Yeah, it really sucks because I have a handful of co-workers and friends that I use the group text with and now I can't use it. It's nuts that it's not supported.
Like you, I tried messing with APN settings and 3rd party apps but to no avail. If you find a solution please let me know because I'm seriously annoyed right now
I seem to have it working on an app by app basis. It works best from the default messaging app, but I hope this is something that will be fixed in the future.

I found Textra to be the best workaround for this. It has some smarts to figure out the group messaging... better than others at least.

TextNow is an awesome app I found that lets you make WiFi Calls and also text over WiFi and of course supports group text messaging.
However, you will have to choose a new # which is not really a huge deal. Just another option for you guys. Been using it for a couple days and it works great!
I will try Textra as well and see if it works.
