Expandable storage on the nexus 6? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know of a way to expand the storage of Nexus 6? I'm pretty satisfied with 32gb but would definitely appreciate more.

The only thing I can think of is get one of those micro USB card readers. I can't think of their names off the top of my head. It's pretty much a microSD reader that you plug into the micro USB port on the phone. Personally I think it's more hassle than what it's worth.
The other potential option, and easier one in my opinion, is using some sort of cloud storage such as Google Drive and/or Dropbox.

Yeah I use both Dropbox and drive, but I'm not sure how reliable cloud storage is. The simplest hack and bye bye data. I do know about the micro USB thing. Not interested in using that.

Your only option is to sell it and buy the 64GB like you should have to start with.

I really wish Verizon offered a 64GB option. Would have bought that in a heartbeat. But all we have is the 'black' (it's actually dark blue) 32GB.

You can purchase it on the Play Store, Motorola directly and then buy the 64GB then bring it to VZW.
Might be tough to have it activated, but it's possible

If I paid full retail, that's what I would have done. But the store I went to was able to keep my unlimited data and still upgrade me to the N6 for $200. Couldn't pass that up.

http://www.meenova.com/st/p/m3r.html Here is what I use for expandable storage.

I just got a Leef Bridge 32GB USB with a microUSB and regular USB on it. It is AWESOME for keeping ROMs, Kernels and backup on it and with me at all times. It comes in 16, 32, and 64 GB variants.

you can keep an eye on this product http://www.exo-drive.com/ I backed the kickstarter project and am eagerly awaiting it.

I have a 32gb. Thru AT&T.. I use meenova SD card reader with a micro SD 64 GB card...

Worried about space? Possible solution...

This is only for people who actually open to ideas, not for people who just want to ***** and moan.
I wanna buy the 8GB, for every day use it will be perfect for me, but for the odd case where I go on a long plane journey and don't want to take my tablet, I wondered if there is solution...and then I realised there was, and it's ultra compact.
USB on the Go is the saviour here. Pair this adapter with this tiny USB stick and you suddenly have 32GB extra space.
If your feeling more adventurous, you could go down this DIY route too, very cool and I might be trying this myself
But how is this implemented on the software side? Does stock android support this?
sure, usb host ist what you need

Yeap that's possible, but absent of miniSD card is a big deal breaker for me considering this is just only 8GB - and there's a nice article at http://www.androidpolice.com, why this is so cheap considering this is unlocked phone. It sounds like Google did sacrifice some specs make the cost down and more affordable.
I have Samsung Galaxy S III with 16GB, and plust 32GB sd card, I am already running out space since I save a lot of musics, and games on my sd card and since we all carry the phone with us (not like 10 inch tablet), it makes better sense to have bigger space on your phone.
so really 8GB quite deal breaker.
Don't think that I am *****ing and moanning about it, Nexus 4 specs quite amazing and looks premium quality, and what you said about USB stick would work just fine, but just wanted to share my 5 cent opinion here.
I think that this could work. Im also looking to buy the 8gb flavor.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying everyone will be happy with 8GB, I just didn't want people coming in here just to moan. It's down to cost, and if you need more space, that's cool.
16GB is enough for me, and if I need more space I'll use dropbox/google drive
Of course I would prefer microSD slot, but... I guess for 350$ which includes S4 Pro, 2GB RAM, 2100mAh battery, two cameras and its a nexus, we can't complain about anything!!

Yeah, the lack of storage and no sd card for me is also a deal breaker. It's such a shame because I'm really excited about the device. The price here in the UK is so low for what appears to be a high end device, it's amazing. In fact, I've never felt so conflicted about a device. I really want it, but I know it won't hit the mark, purely for lack of storage. With games like NOVA 3 taking up 3GB, plus my sat nav requiring almost 2GB, there won't be much space for other stuff. Data coverage where I live is pretty hit and miss so streaming media from the cloud still isn't a viable alternative for me yet which is a shame. Perhaps it will at least help to drive down the price of other handsets that have high end SoC?
I think the OP's suggestion is a very good one. This approach works well most of the time on a Galaxy Note, as long as it's just a flash drive or micro SD card that the phone can successfully power. I wonder if there would be a way to toggle something like 'directory bind' on and off so that you could put music/media/data files for games on a micro sd card, then just plug it in when you need, change the path of the internal SD card to the external one, then fire up a game. That would be a reasonable compromise from my perspective.
Such a shame, it's so cheap
I don't understand the people who want to buy the 8gb version. Its only a little bit more for the 16gb version.
.. and don't say its because you can't afford it.. because if this phone was the same price range as the galaxy nexus or any other high end smart phone you would still buy it.
Just pay that little bit extra and get double the space.
I have a USB-OTG cable and a USB microSD card reader so I would just buy another 16GB/32GB card and carry that around with me. It is easy to take out and plug in and easy to put away when not needed.
Hey guy's. My Girlfriend got a Galaxy Nexus and YES USB-OTG is part of the Chipset Configuration the GN comes with! The Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 Chipset supports OTG as well. In the pure Android-Roms the Nexus Devices are running the Firmware supports OTG by default. As I know it's included in the kernel... so no need to create a problem!!!
buy a OTG Adapter - 1,99€ on Amaz...
buy a USB Stick 32Gb. - 12,00€ even on Amaz..
buy a LG NEXUS 4 16GB - 349,00€
= 362,99€ complete!
so if you compare this the other "leading devices" you save up to 200€!!! so you see, no need to spend tears and cry.... Start smiling cause you got a few buck's left to buy some Christmas presents for the family!
I use Google Music and sync my photos to my 50GB dropbox account (thank you Samsung!). 16GB is more than I ever need. The only time I get close to using that much is if I'm dual booting 2 different roms.
I do this with my Nexus 7 and plan to continue doing it with the Nexus 4! Really useful when I want to stick a film or tv show on there and watch on the go.

Yes this would work. I personally have done it with my Gnexus and nexus 7. However, you have to be very careful with that thing sticking out of your phone. It could be very easy to knock the phone over or drop it or something and I would be concerned about hurting the stuff inside the phone.
good alternative... currently have the 16GB NS4G and was really excited when i saw the tweet about the N4 and N10 today... disappointed by no Verizon/Sprint compatibility tho... this definitely would've been my next phone if i could use it on these networks...
question about his alternative tho... is 32GB the limit it can read or can you go up to something like 64GB storage as well??

lol no... but i have my hard drive b/c i'm using it to transfer files between people... i mostly just stream Pandora and don't play many games... the space isn't the issue for me really on this device... no cdma is ... but it's great to know there's essentially no limit to the sd/usb car we can add to this!
Why do you need so much space? I'm using an Xperia S right now, with 32GB and I've got over half of it free. 18GB free to be precise, but I haven't been deleting photos and such that I don't need, so they're at 1.3GB.

Why aren't there low profile flash drives with micro-USB connectors?

Something like the one below with a micro-usb connector instead.
I would think some manufacturer could make a killing in the phone/tablet market...
Agreed, that's a great idea, maybe nobody has actually thought about it who works in the industry? Stranger things have happened.

Kickstarter, buddy. Make your own and make your millions at the same time.
So I bought this Microusb flash drive/ microsd card reader from Amazon to try with my Nexus 10. It's not low profile, but it is pretty small.

I can get the 4 gb flash drive to work using either Nexus Media Importer or Stick Mount, but I cannot get the microsd to show up. It works fine in my Galaxy S3 in both ICS and Jellybean. Has anyone else tried this product? Any ideas to get one of those apps (or another one) to read a device that has both a usb flash drive and microsd card? This device could be the answer to my storage problems on the Nexus 10 if only I can get it to read the microsd card! Thanks!

I already got 2 of those and they work fine with NMI - just looking for something that won't block the headphone jack. One of those with the micro-usb connector reversed would at least go in the other direction and leave the headphone jack accessible.

I'm trying to avoid something that sticks out too far. If you drop the N10 or bang it on something with that connected, it could really stress (or even break) the micro-usb jack.
I only need the flash drive/card reader to watch movies. I'm ok with it jutting out some as long as I can get it to work. I'm surprised no one else has found this item with all the people looking for microusb flash drives.

If it doesn't exist (yet), that makes it kinda hard to find.
I just ordered this from ebay. It's not specifically described as OTG but it does say it's 5-pin, so I'm hopeful. At least it will leave the headphone jack accessible.
The point of my earlier post is that micro-usb flash drives do exist, and you can buy them from amazon. It may not be small enough for you, but it is still pretty small and light and could be a good option for people who do not want to build their own or be stuck using a cable.
The problem is that I still can't get it to read the microsd card. It is only reading the flash memory part on my Nexus 10. My Galaxy S3 can read the 4 gig internal memory and the 32 gig microsd card.

Sorry - I was still referring to a low profile flash drive, as pictured in the OP and another poster's picture. I have seen the ones you're referring to, and I'm just paranoid about it sticking out that far. The right angled adapter I posted above (assuming it works as OTG) would at least keep the flash drive running parallel to the edge of the N10, rather that sticking out perpendicular to it.
I just bought one of the SanDisk Fit drives you used as an example, and while I haven't looked at it closely, my guess is that the bulk of its "guts" are actually stuffed in the USB connector itself (pretty sure I've run across MicroSD card readers that worked this way) and therefore wouldn't fit into a similar package with a micro usb connector.

Missing expandable storage?

I had a 64GB microSD card that was doing nothing more than sitting since the LG G2 does not have a microSD slot. I picked up a small OTG reader and now I have almost 90GB of storage! Really nice design, micro USB OTG on one end and standard USB on the other to use with a computer.
2-in-1 USB MicroSD OTG
About $3 shipped, reads 64GB cards (specifically SanDisk Ultra 64GB XC1 class), was seeing 30MB/second reads and 10MB/second writes from the computer. The phone has no problem reading the card and there is a headphone plug to keep the reader attached to the phone. It does seem a little flimsy, but for its size and cost I am still very pleased.

This sounds like the punchline "And that's how I joined a Mexican gang".
I've been ordering from dx.com for years, never a problem. You will wait and wait for the shipment, but it will get here. If there is a problem they will fix it, for $3 you might want to get more than one. There are many other OTG adapters there as well, search OTG and sort by price, low to high, and release date to see more options, there are even some android shaped ones.
I ordered and received these before posting, I will test it once I get my phone replaced. It decided to "die" last night, reboots, gets to lock screen, freezes then reboots, even reverted to stock rom with the same issue. Going to swap it at a Sprint store today.

Compact OTG Storage option - & well priced

Was in the process of sourcing parts to follow up suggestions in other threads for making a small external micro SD card reader, and came across these. The memory is fixed at 8, 16, or 32 GB but the price is less than I've been paying for the micro SD cards!

From prior experience with the supplier, although currently available pre-order only the actual items will be on the shelf soon. Certainly be getting a couple, and find a different project to play with.

Thanks for that link, I got the 16G version because of the direct plug into the device.. I've been wanting to try out F2FS and you gotta nuke the whole SD to do it, and I didn't really want to transfer it all over USB again. I think this will be much easier to deal with, and faster to transfer files back and forth from the device and get it back up again after formatting.
I'm planning to purchase either
the SanDisk Ultra Dual USB Drive, or
the Kingston DT microDuo, or
the Transcend JetFlash 380S.
They are very similar to each other. I wonder whether they differ on speed etc.
Any reviews based on experience with these or other dual USB drives are very much welcome.

Love it. I now keep all of my TWRP backups and Titanium backups on it. Frees up gobs of space and makes it so easy (and fast!) to transfer files to and from my PC.

I'm glad I got the 32g for just a few bucks more, my N7's whole SD card and a few TWRP's from each device and it's about full Although I could nuke the SD card backup now and free up a bunch of space.
It's a nice device, but almost too small. I'm afraid to carry it anywhere, so I put it in my zip-up earbud case since I carry them with me everywhere.
If you don't want cables or bits that plug in there's another Kingston option 'wireless card reader'

I was of the mindset to wait for the 64GB handset, but it is almost mid January now with nary a notification that this elusive model is available.
Do you think I should wait it out? Or is 32GB plenty? I currently have a 16GB Nexus 2 with 32GB SD card. I routinely run out of space on the device (mostly DCIM pics + videos and TWRP backups / ROMs I want to test).
Thanks for your esteemed advice!
Drew
Nexus 2? What? Nexus devices don't have sdcards.
It all up to you on what you need, no one can tell you to wait for 64GB or get 32GB. Only you know what your usage is.
The 64GB is available, you just need to actually be there to get it when it becomes in stock.
As an alternative, you can get a USB flash drive and use USB OTG.
Wait for the 64gb model it's worth it. I don't use all of the space but this nice to have in case I need it.
I was asking myself the same question last month. In the end, i opted to switch to the 32 gig.
All of my music is streamed.
All of my pictures are backed up to a cloud. (Google Drive shows up in your Gallery of photos on the phone)
I delete any rom I am not using.
The only things I keep saved for TWRP (also backed up to a cloud) are my Stock Unrooted back up and a current back up of whatever Rom I am running.
I ditched the wait and took the 32 gig and have run into 0 problems.

Oh gotcha. In my opinion, 32GB is enough for me. But for you, not sure. It all depends on your usage.
If you plan on using the N6 in the long-run, 64GB can't hurt but then you'll be paying +$50 and more sales tax.
Theres alternatives to storing your stuff.. USB OTG, Cloud, etc. 32GB should be just fine, just see your usage on your current setup and determine it from there.
wait and get 64gb, 32gb is too small imo ,even 64 is small lol , 128gb would be fine! no need to mess with OTG sticking out and losing those small devices
