As the title suggests, how is your experience with the latest firmware? What have been improved. Which are the downsides. At the end of the Day, is it worth updating, or better wait?
TL;DR
Update definitely recommended. No camera issues anymore, faster operating speed, only sporadic misfunction of SD card. Fixed by reinserting it/restart.
I'll definitely recommend anyone to update, so far I'm genuinely happy with the update. No more annoying camera failures, much faster operating speed and Android 5 sweetness. It always blows my mind how pressing the camera button actually works as a shortcut for opening the camera now, takes about 1 sec to open and snap! Picture taken. Only problem I've encountered so far is that sometimes the OS somehow loses write privileges for the SD card, leading to apps like play music not to work properly, dunno how apps that are saved on the SD card react to this, weirdly, file managers like total Commander can still read the card but no more write privileges. Solution is to eject SD card and putting it back in, a restart works, too. I'll have to look further into that bug tho.

I have issues with the Cache. When I look at the recent Tab I have Maybe 10 Apps here. The Cache is full and all this slow down the Xperia. The icon don't load anymore. Then I must close all Apps and it runs normal. Under KitKat no problems like this...

That was the first thing I have make after flashing...
I have Lollipop for over a week now. Installed a pre rooted firmware to get 120 fps, 4K, face in camera, smart call handling, smart backlight and all the goodies. Before installing any of these, I wiped all caches. The battery drainage is greater, at least for me, now. Phone isn't lagging at all. Camera is indeed fast. My main issue is the battery life that has worsened.
Apart from that I would say go on and update.

This is the thread I used. It requires a rooted kitkat rom.
After that check for 120 fps and 4k for Z1 lollipop and the other stuff.
I think it's all located in Xperia Z1 themes and apps.
Follow the instructions in each thread and everything should go fine.
Done everything in one take with no bricks or bootloops whatsoever.
What about overheating? Has this been controlled. Also, what do you think about the camera, especialy in low light conditions? Have been improved?

For the over heating, the only way I "fixed" it was to use pimp my z1 app, set GPU governor to power save. It will seldom overheat while playing games

Xperia z1 c6906 LOLLIPOP Battery Drain
I have updated my Xperia z1 C6906 to android 5.0 rooted however the battery life has worsened. Android OS is using around 50-55% of the battery with "Mobile Radio Active" using the battery most of the time for each of the apps. Is there a solution for this since battery life is more important to me rather than being on lollipop.

Hello Xda. I have a Sony Xperia Z, stock rom, locked bootloader , non-rooted and with android 4.3 (10.4.B.0.569, Belgium version). All of my games lags on this device ( asphalt 8 , subway surf, even fruit ninja sometimes). Except games, nothing lags (menu, transition between apps etc). I tried many of the 10.4.B.0.569 build versions (singapore, switzerland, australia version ) but nothing changes. Strangely is that on .267 version the menu, album, camera was laggy, but not the games. Anyone knows what can I do to resolve the lag problem? (root or changing the phone from stock isn't an option, because I don't want to lose warranty).
You won't lose warranty by rooting mate..

its wierd because it lags... serioulsy..maybe u have a phone with faulty hardware.
You can Try the Repair-option in the Sony PC companion. be AWARE that you might lose all your data, but the program will warn you again if this risk exists.
A better option would be to flash a Stock rom with flashtool and datawipe unticked. If you feel unsure about using flashtool, this thread should help. If, after reading it you still feel unsure, ask me via PM, I might be able to help you.
If you don't want to mess around with flashing and things like that, you can tap settings/about phone/build number a few times and play with the developer options, especially the categoty "hardware-accelerated rendering". be aware that the developer options can (very very rarely) have unexpected behavour like forceclosing apps. It has been a long while since it last happened to me, but just go untick whatever you did and it will be fine again. do not simulate a secondary screen if you have that option.
I have this lag as well. I have not been able to identify why.

To free the system resources it takes up to write it. Besides, logcat files could take up several hundred megabytes of internal memory on my I9100.

I play a stupid game called Kiwi Dash, after a while the phone gets hot, really hot, on the back, next to the camera, you know, where the processor is located
Well, when it gets hot the lags appears, I had previously a CPU meter and I came to the conclusion that when it gets hot it slows down the CPU, one time in the summer it reached 50 celsius, even the home screen was laggy! So I bet that our foe is the overheated CPU....

It is well known that this device has a overheat protection "thermal throttling". It slows down the CPU if the phone is in danger of overheating. you could try to run the game at 720p instead of 1080 via xposed module to see if it is easier on the chips. but the hardware stays 1080p, so the load on the chips wil stay comparatively high...
As we all note kitkat has been out for 2 days
My quick impression is that it isn't good
LAAAAAG in launcher (Not Lockscreen nor apps) (GPU Rendering isn'T very effective)
Battery is being killed
Camera seems to worse in low light condition (Will post an comparason later) and slower
No update for the stock apps (Xperia blog has those)
Post your Impressions below How do you feel
Update:In NUT's recovery don't enter TeamWinRecovery for me it caused an refuse boot
had to connect in download mode (Without flashing anything)
Opening PhilzTouch recovery and booted from there to system
I find it quite responsive after the initial lag in the settings menu and bad battery life.
What's really annoying me though is that I can't find a tweak which enables expanded desktop properly. Despite KitKat apparently natively supporting expanded desktop mode, Gravity Box for some reason doesn't want to work properly. It worked perfectly in 4.2.2. So I'm hoping someone can make a working version.
Another test
if you use the voice message of FB Messenger your mic gets locked
and you will have to restart your Phone to make it work
i've had kit kat for two days now on my xperia zr no root, locked bootloader. I have no lags, everything works quick just like 4,3. The only issue is that google play services drains battery like crazy (at this very moment is on 87% on battery use ) :/

What Rom? I am thinking of switching ?
Carbon or BeanStack ?
kitkat
I don't see/feel any problems on my C5503
running smooth
Any Major difference in terms of functionality between 4.4 and 4.3 except the Theme Color? If not I'll stick with 4.3 itself:victory:.
Also Please provide the Walkman, Gallery and Movies APP Version in 4.4
I'm kinda surprised with all ur reviews here coz I don't have any lag issues whatsoever.
I'm using a prerooted version of .230 on my C5502.
The phone is responsive, I got a decent antutu score of around 21225 and the battery barely drains.. I had a perfectly flat battery graph for abt 4 n a half hours (of course I wasn't using the phone but that also means it's going into the appropriate power mode effectively). And even when I was using it, I got a decent full day of use out of it.

Carbon is good but Mokee is officially supported and offers much better functions IMO eg. split screen screen recording and awesome handy shortcuts from the recents menu... i am using stock 4.4.2 sony for now but i am already missing Mokee..
in any case if you want to move back to cm/asop/akop i would recommend Mokee but don't get me wrong i still love Carbon Rom.

I noticed lag and heating issues at first install but if you leave it for a while it seems like it fixes itself.. I would say it uses about 20% more battery than maybe a cm rom..
At first I thought that being with my own home made rooted version was the cause of the lag. In the z forum I read about wiping data and factory reset and also reboot a couple of times. I have to say that the lag is gone. I like the Kitkat version so far. I even made it deodexed and put z2 app in the app folder even that works. So if you can find the new updated apps it is possible to get them working.

How do I feel?
Honestly, as free beta tester for Google that's how.
I'm not even considering updating to stock KK, yet. Would rather move to some fine working custom ROM like Carbon (need to check first if VPN is working) or CM.
- It used to be, flash stock, one-touch root and voila.
- Now, it's TA backup, BL unlock/relock, flash, recovery, flash, flash, tweak this, mod that, xposed, gpu render, battery drain, oh lag, oh camera is slower, oh more emoticons, OH COME ON!!
I know it's not Sony fault but those hipsters from Google.
With killing external SD support, at the end and in the future, it smells that stock Android will work flawlessly ONLY on Google hardware. That's a pure BS.
You mean Mobiles with no SD card*
Yeah, basically all Nexuses, mob/tab. Good read here
I think it helps to keep product life cycle short. The Apple philosophy.
Okay, after a few days use I'm getting major lag when unlocking the phone. When I input my pattern, the phone responds with the vibrations like 3 seconds later, and THEN it unlocks. After that it's completely fine, and feels a lot snappier than 4.2.2. Does anyone else have the same problem?

Mine is great here
I have pattern and unlock it is very fast. no lag at all.
My phone 5502 is working flawlessly. No lag and no battery drain. didn't want to root so i don't risk loosing my apps and data. i upgrade directly by flashing an ftf file over 4.3 with flashtool and no wipe.
I know that there was a memory leak issue with 5.02 but it's apparently fixed before the fw was deployed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/clarification-xperia-lollipop-fix-t3087240
So that doesn't help explain my issue. Very often, when I have any combination of Spotify + Google Maps, Spotify + Chrome, Chrome + Google Maps, etc open, the app that's in the background will just flat out close. It's stupidly annoying while driving when my music just dies, or when my navigation disappears and I miss my turns because I don't hear any audible alerts. The issue goes away after a fresh restart, and will come back usually within a day or two.
I did not have this issue on 4.4.4.
My free ram hovers around 500-600MB at all times.
RAM status today
RAM Status after fresh restart
I absolutely hate why nothing can be properly backgrounded like in iOS. The moment I press the home button or switch apps, all my open tabs in Chrome have to be reloaded. Filling out forms in a Chrome tab while referencing another app is almost impossible... This was actually an issue on 4.4.4 as well as 5.02. I have not found any way to fix this, no matter how many times I restart my phone. I don't think my old Galaxy S3 had this problem...
Why does Android make us work so hard for a properly working phone, if we can even have that at all? As a consumer I should not have to go through 7 levels of technical hell to make a phone work properly. This isn't Linux.
Sorry for the rant. Anyone know what I can do to fix this? Everyone says RAM clearing apps are bad. So that's not an option right?
.726 has this problem and as far as I can recall it was pretty serious. Fortunately in .26 the problem has been solved. It's about memory management in lollipop being poor rather than memory leak.
.26 hasn't been released for D5803 USA right? I don't see it in the firmware thread
Still doesn't explain the Chrome issue. Whenever anything is backgrounded (not closed) in Chrome, all my tabs have to be reloaded. Most of the time now, even just switching from one tab to the next within Chrome while it's open forces a refresh of the tab. WTF
I never had any memory leak issues with any of the firmwares. Try to turn off Stamina mode just to see if it is affecting (I have it off, and queue background data off as well). Make sure also you have not enabled Developer Options and checked the setting 'Don't keep activities' or some other setting that limit the amount of process you can have in the background.
Dev options are not enabled. And stamina only kicks in at 50% battery. I could turn off que data but does that have anything to do with RAM?
I just called Xperia tech support and they suggested I do this:
http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperi...uctions-using-Pc-Companion-Win-or/td-p/249946
Has anyone done this and fixed the issue?
I am apparently not the only one who has had this problem:
https://www.reddit.com/r/SonyXperia/comments/356f80/z3c_502_stock_memory_leak_or_something_else/
There's an Xposed module called App Settings that lets you force the OS to keep stuff resident in memory. Because it's an Xposed module, I have no idea if it's compatible with LP or not. Also, there's a point where you can run out of memory and experience involuntary restarts if you keep too many apps resident. Still, it's worth trying, imo.
I was told that the memory leak wouldn't be fixed until 5.1 or even 5.1.1
726 did indeed have this problem. i used the xposed module for the memoryleak fix and it did indeed work...phone was much faster.
People are saying sony phones do not have the leak but the leak affects each phone in slightly different ways.
I the new .28 USA firmware running on my phone now and it is working rather well. granted i still have the lollipop memory fix module activated but i will do some testing with it off as well.
Nope, the problem is not solved in any lollipop firmware, atleast for me. I tried all the latest, reflash and wiped all (Included Internal Data) and the problem still here. Is Ridiculous how with 2GB RAM I can´t have atleast 4 apps opened without the preocupation of they get killed for itself. I remember with my Nexus 7 Tablet in Android 4.3 had a looot of apps opened and no one get killed itself, it was a great multitask experience that I can't get yet in Xperia Z3 Compact. I tried edit minfree values, uninstall apps, change firmwares, edit services.jar, install tweaks, edit my build.prop, etc. Also I noticed with the Task Manager of System Tuner app that "/system/bin/mediaserver" is always eating more than 60mb of Ram, this is since kitkat and continues to happen in Lollipop, after of some hours, this same process can take up to 160 - 200 mb of RAM!!! The worst thing is that in other devices this process don't seems to take a lot of Ram as in Z3 Compact did. Idk, it would be good that we can improve multitask in this device.
I compared the /system/bin/mediaserver usage with a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and it only takes 5 mb of RAM while in Xperia Z3 Compact it always start eating 50 mb of RAM and it increases up to 160 - 200 mb in some hours. You can see my proofs here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60569610&postcount=9
So Idk what to do now, I hear that the only good devices that take importance in multitasking are HTC M9 (M8 and M7 too) and the Asus Zenphone because they merged their own patches to ART to improve a lot how multitasking is managed in android. I think sony do their devices to kill apps very agressive, so in this way they can presume that his device is more smooth than others but useless for multitasking. Weird...

Any feedback on how .28 is running compared to .726 with the xposed fix?
Like many, I uninstalled the fix after I read the thread pointing out that having it active was pointless as Sony had already fixed the memory leak themselves, but after reading your reply, I decided to reinstall and sure enough, my phone does seem snappier. Having read the changelog for .28, it didn't seem worth upgrading unless performance was noticeably better.
I will tell you im enjoying .28 with the fix running. There are enough fixes in there to make it worth it i think

No issues on 23.1.A.0.726 here, I have averagely 250 MB more free RAM on Lollipop than on Kitkat, with all the same apps installed. :good:
Guys, the problem is not how many ram do you have, the problem is if you can multitask some apps without someone get killed. I can multitask within 2 or 3 apps sometimes, but I can't get more than that without someone gets killed...
It was to be expected that Lollipop in Sony devices would be problematic. For the time being, I prefer to stay in KitKat and then make the jump to 5.0.2.

I have Xperia Z1 and wife has Nexus 5. I am happy with Sony's apps and functionality, but performance glitches are so annoying that I even consider buying Nexus 5, which seems to me like a downgrade due camera specs and inability to extend memory. Is it possible to tweak any settings or use any ROM, that would give similar smooth performance, but leave intact Sony's camera/album and smart connect apps, stamina mode, Xperia lounge lotteries?
This is strange, what version do you have? try to install the last update 5.1.1. and do a factory reset. This phone should be faster than the nexus 5
Yeah Z1 is much smoother than N5... I like N5 only because of its closest to stock android ! Sonys UI is second!
It has recently updated to 5.1.1. Strange, for example I always have moments of unresponsiveness using Wechat, slow switching to another app or even momentarily freezes while typing text.
the lag could be due to the apps you've installed.have you tried debloating? and if that doesn't work unlock the BL,install CM12.1 and a minimal GApps package and feel the wind in your face!
Xperia z1 is much smoother and faster than nexus 5, lg g2/3, lg g4,galaxy s4,galaxy s5, which all of them had stuttering and lag and sometimes become unresponsive for few seconds, it's even faster than z2/z3 in day to day usage(app oppening speed and switching between apps). My Z1 even became lag stutter free after lollipop update(little stutter in kitkat when switching between heavy apps and ram is low, now it's gone). The only lag i get is when using chrome and visit websites that has too many ads. To fix that i use adaway
My z1 is stock, rooted, deodexed and has superusermod. with all stock bloatware and all available mods you can think of including xposed and ui is heavily modded.
Dont say this is bullshet, i know what i am talking about because i use many phones, and moat of them should be faster than z1

It has recently updated to 5.1.1. Strange, for example I always have moments of unresponsiveness using Wechat, slow switching to another app or even momentarily freezes while typing text.

I think you should just factory reset the phone. It is really easy, in settings click on "backup and recovery" or something like that and there click on factory reset. It'll erase the memory of the phone so save all you have to save before doing this. The phone we'll reboot, it takes around 5-10 min but then it'll be fresh as new.
Yeah it's very true. From my experience, i've compared my Z1 and my friend's Nexus 5. Noticeably Z1 is faster than Nexus 5 in terms of overall user interface responsiveness. Especially when you have a lot of tasks going on, Nexus 5 did stutters a little than Z1. This is just my opinion and some, i don't know about the others. You have to monitor your phone, might be software or hardware's fault.
Thank you all for answers and giving hope. I'll try resetting factory settings first, though I did that about 2 months ago to resolve low volume recording issue with Wechat with no avail. I am not yet a power user of Android and after reading just few tuts only came to a point where Flashtool successfully recognizes connected phone.
masterofnocrack: Could you give any tips on debloating? Do you mean removing unnecessary apps (I don't have such and also no games). Or removing default apps installed by Sony (I don't use some of them). Also you mentioned installing CM12.1 and a minimal GApps package. Would I loose Sony's camera app, stamina mode. And if I dont like CM, can I revert to Sonys default Android and still get updates from Sony?
Gamer4Life: To my understanding only changes you made to default Sony's Android were " rooted, deodexed and has superusermod". Could you explain / give link to what is deodexing and superuser mod?
Have you ever considered that the lag is because of one your apps? bcoz 5.1.1 was fine when i tried it.
Debloating>> Just remove all the preloaded apps you dont use either by disabling it in the settings>apps or by removing them with a root explorer after rooting the phone(ES File Explorer is cool)
CM>> Yep you can revert to stock and get updates.
If you are going to switch to CM then remember to BACKUP YOUR TA Partition before you unlock your bootloader cuz you will loose all your DRM keys on BL unlock(which means Xreality and BIONZ wont work anymore)hence you need to back up the keys if you want to switch back to stock.
Unfortunately the camera quality is inferior on CM roms and you wont get sony's camera or stamina.
PS:does your phone feel hot to the touch like its overheating?
Unlock your bootloader and try flashing some of the ROMS based on stock sony. This way, you'll get to keep the awesome camera app , at the same time getting rid of bloatware.

So I am a bit burned from updating my s5 mini (last time it just updated itself to 5.0, my battery life and performance shrunk and it wouldnt even let me disable bloatware).
Here are my questions:
1. How did the battery life change from 5.0;
2. How did the peformance change from 5.0 (including in-apps, opening them and regular menu opening/scrolling);
3. Is USB-OTG now supported?
1. Battery life has improved a lot, at least for me. It seems that Smart Manager is really doing its job and I'm seeing an improvement in both standby time and SOT. With a few tweaks here and there you can improve the battery life even more.
2. Everything feels smoother, there are some updated animations and transitions that really make the phone feel like new.
3. No, OTG on the S5 Mini has never been and never will be officially supported by Samsung. There is a custom kernel that enables OTG but it most likely affects the water resistance capabilities because of the exposed USB connector and also it's somewhat of a risk to use anything that requires power on a port that was never designed to do that.
One of the few drawbacks I noticed just today is that the auto brightness seems a lot less responsive. For example it's very sunny today and most of the time when pulling the phone out of my pocket the display was still stuck on low brightness. It might just be a conflict with xposed or something else I'm running. All in all I recommend that you update, I skipped the 5.1.1 update as well but for different reasons, 6.0.1 is pretty good.

What model are you using? I'm using the GH800F.
How big is the change? And I've heard that 6.0.1 gives you less performance for more battery. Is that correct?
Sorry, I'm just scared of updating because I don't want to lose all of my data for another let down like 5.1.1 (that literally just enabled itself out of ****ing nowhere and I lost everything).

G800F as well. Like I said, I've noticed a big improvement in battery life. Just make a backup of the important stuff on your phone like contacts and photos and try the 6.0.1 firmware - I recommend you do a clean install via ODIN.

Alright, as long as the performance hasn't decreased (especially in games) then I'll update.
Since I've got most things on my SD card, can I just remove it from my phone, update and put it back in?

Yes, backup everything you don't want to lose to your card, wipe the phone from recovery and install a fresh 6.0.1 firmware with ODIN. If you don't like Marshmallow you can always go back to KitKat.

That's the problem, I can't revert. I tried doing it with 5.1.1 but it just wouldn't let me. I tried multiple times, on multiple PC's with multiple USB wires. (which is why I'm so nervous).
P.s. So if I remove my card, installl 6.0.1 and add it again it'll work?

You should be able to revert, if you can't then there's an issue with something - maybe you haven't updated the Samsung USB drivers?
Yes, it will work. Backup your contacts, messages, photos, videos, anything you want saved on your card and pull it out before you update if you're so nervous.

So I just updated and it's been sitting at "samsung" for the past 5 minutes. Why?

The first boot takes ~15 minutes, be patient. Check out threads about the Marshmallow update you'll find a lot of useful info.

Oh wow. This is just...
It is so sluggish like wtf...
Also be aware that marshmallow ****s up your gps big time. if you're only using it for rough navigation it's fine, but don't expect accuracy as a pedestrian
Hi, i flashed stock MM TW comming from CyanogenMod 13. My battery life seems worse than before with CMod... What should I do?
Before upgrading to MM I did a benchmark test (AnTuTu) on 4.4.2 for comparison, ran the same test on MM and here are the results.
Thanks for the test. A more meaningful one would be to compare Lollipop 5.1 with MM 6.0.1 as most S5 Mini users have Lollipop installed.
I have a question about the MM 6.0.1 update. I flashed the new rom al updatet and seemd to work perfect. Then i noticed, the battery life was very poor. So take a good look at what was draining it. During the day it seemd okay, then when i got home it started rapidly draining again. I managed to figure out that when i am using 4G/LTE everything is fine but when i am home and change to my wifi, my screen turns on every 3 minutes or something and it complety unlocks as wel. because i have my screen time set to 1 minute it stays that way then turns of and about 3 minutes later turns itself on again. When i disable wifi the problem is gone.
Has anyone a idea how to fix this? i live at the border of my country and without wifi its gonna be expesive with roaming costs ....
Thanx in advance for your reply's
Hi, I'm using Germany (DBT) firmware.
I usually use Ultra Power Saving Mode.
Then after turn off Ultra Saving Mode, e-mail application is asking me "admin priviliages confirmation" for each time. (only for Exchange account)
My flashlight don't work in the dark after the update to marshmellow.
Tried another from play store, the same issue
DBT firmware

I had the same issue. Resetting the app worked for me. (btw. I googled that)
"Anwendungsmanager", "Kamera", "Speicher", "Daten löschen" und "Cache leeren".
Since you said you are on the DBT firmware, I assumed you are german.
I'm on 5.1.1 not rooted with g800f. Should I update to MM with Odin first then flash the custom recovery? Thank you!
