[Q] At&T Samsung Galaxy S5 reception issues and conversion - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

I was wondering if anyone else was having any issues with reception? I live in the Cupertino area in California, but my reception is really bad when I am on campus or at home, I get full coverage when near an AT&T store but whenever I am indoors, its horrible, yet when I am inn LA, I have full reception no matter where I am.
Also, is there any way to convert from AT&T to Tmobile, I did it with my HTC One M7, I tried to look it up on the forums but could not find any guides or answers.
TIA

I'm on AT&T, running stock rooted LP via muniz_ri. No problems with reception at all.

I noticed a signal drop when I updated to lollipop. However, I am in Montana, not California.

I am running the stock LP with root(towelrootv3), I don't have reception issues in some places, but when I check online on the AT&T website, it says I am supposed to have full coverage. I am guessing you have a custom rom, or modified stock rom right?

Was it a massive drop or just 1 bar? I usually get a 3 bar drop while at home and on campus, but when I am out or near an AT&T store, I get about 4 bars.

No custom rom. Stock rooted LP (via muniz_ri). Coverage may be location dependent. It can get sketchy in some areas where I am, despite what AT&T says.
Just debating a custom rom now.

Is it possible to flash a custom recovery on LP? I haven't seen anything about safestrap or TWRP for LP on the S5?

Yep, check the Android Development thread for TMS5. Just came out. You are correct that SafeStrap and TWRP are not available, but we have FlashFire to do flashing with. It is available on Play Store. Read the threads carefully.

I used FlashFire to flash my stock LP from 4.4.2 and kept root, didn't know we can still use it to flash other Roms. Thanks!

Be careful. TMS5 has an unlocked bootloader. There is no working recovery for the ATT S5 LP. Not even safestrap. Only FlashFire if you have root.

2-3 bar drop. It has actually gotten better the last few days. I am at 4 bars at home when it has been 1 to 3 bars after the update. LTE speeds seem a lot faster, I wonder if they improved my area recently. When we got LTE, it was a dismal 5 mb, just ran a speed test and got 24!

As u know that with latest android update 4.2.2 Google turn off the lte access. No worries
It just the radios so just roll back to previous radios .33 or .24

well thats kind of common sense to be honest.
not really a fix but a workaround
has this worked for you by any chance?
I just finished doing this myself. It works, you just need to flash the 4.2.1 radio .33 over top of 4.2.2 and it works fine

I'm talking about the baseband update, not the actual 4.2.2 OS update. I've updated to 4.2.2 but downgraded the baseband, which has nothing to do with the media scanner bug.
I'm wondering what specific improvements/changes were made in the new baseband.
Do I have to be rooted to flash an old radio?

You need to have an unlocked bootloader at least to flash in fastboot.

Ohh, erm, **** knows.
Finding mine locks onto 3G better, slightly better signal, less battery usage.
I wouldn't go back to .33, even if there were LTE services in my area... I bought the phone knowing it wasn't a 4G phone, so I have lost nothing.

I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to use the newer baseband... LTE service here is amazing, and I am talking a huge difference (HSPA+ DC I get around 8mbps and 120ms ping, where with LTE I get over 40mbps and 18ms ping). Not sure if I want to give that up!!

The network could quite easily lock out your phone at any time anyway, as each handset identifies itself on LTE, so they only have to put a block on N4 ID strings, if they wanted to and use the non-approved card...

Left nexus 4 to come back the atrix hd. I'm on tmobile.

So my question is, and correct me if I'm wrong. But, I can still unlock the att atrix HD to be used on tmobile , correct? Reason for leaving the nexus 4 is the eb40 battery. I had the atrix HD a few months back that had the eb40 in it and got 7 hours of actual screen time with 30 hours between charges. That alone is good enough of a reason.

Yes. You can unlock it and use it with T-Mo. You will get full 4G (if in your area) as well as LTE. (again, only if its in your area)

Do it bro. I unlocked mine and so far no problems. The only rom that have me problems was that miuiv5 port. It would ask me for my unlock code every now and then but LiquidSmooth working powerfully and perfectly! I paid 20 bucks for my unlock code and had it within 2 to 3 hours. No signal nor lte problems although i prefer h+ on T-Mobile due to lte being a batt hog

YUP. Welcome to the Matrix HD T-mo club.
After unlocking, make sure you set the fast.t-mobile.com apn which gives you access to LTE.
Otherwise if you're in an lte area, you'll have no access to internet (the 4g lte icon will be shown but cant turn on).
Mexica retail will allow you to manually select between 4g/3g/2g modes if youre feeling like saving battery/MB
I got LTE 13 on T-Mobile with stock rom and epc.T-Mobile.com apn

There are, but they're for the 4.2.2 custom roms. Without an actual kernel dev working on this device making a custom stock kernel, the best we could do is add in a few patches to the stock for CPU/GPU overclocking, some IO schedulers, and maybe some of the patches used by the dev team. I've even thought about doing a full merge of the dev team kernel and our stock JB kernel just because I can, don't know what that'll do or if it would even boot.
What's included with the mexico ROM? I'm assuming the barebones stock kernel.

If you've noticed slower LTE speeds on the 1.31 ota...

Then it's the radio. I can confirm this is the case. Before I downgraded I had dropping 4g signal and the speeds were 50% less, at the same location.
Yesterday I reverted back to 1.29 and I'm experiencing no 4g drops when moving in the train and I'm getting speeds up to 20mbps now.
Solution: s-off your phone and run the 1.29 ruu. I can guarantee better results if you started experiencing data issues lately

I was having this issue tons on the old radio, since updating to the 1.31 update radio, I get much better LTE/EVDO hand-off and more consistant reception.
The new radio is much better for me as well... the old radio refused to go from 3G to 4G even with a strong 4G signal present (a few hundred feet from the tower). The new one has been much more reliable for me. I can even use 3G in areas where it was previously not usable by me, and my calls no longer drop at home.
I guess it all depends on your location. I've had horrible experiences with it.

Out of curiosity, where are you located? In my area, Ericsson is doing the NV rollout. It might be that the old radio works better in Samsung or Alcatel-Lucent areas.

How are you determining who is doing the update?
Radio images are very dependent on the area. We have only 2 to play with sadly.
Honestly, I would say reflash the radio.img from 1.31 (sorry idk the baseband number, too lazy to check phone). Did you flash all the other firmware bits as well? Perhaps you flashed a new ROM or even the stock ROM which writes to EPST. Many devs don't customize EPST settings on their stock-based ROMs and it can be simply a ##DATA# edit that could be causing issues / slowness. But if the radio reflash doesn't fix or improve anything, just flash the old radio. But again, radio depends on area for most things.

Signal Strength Icon Change

First, sorry if this has been asked to death. I did some searching and checked recommended posts and FAQs but nothing quite covered this...
I came from a Telus (Canada) ROM and flashed Android Revolution. Now, on Telus I'm pretty much always in 4G no matter what, never changes. Occasionally I'll skip up to LTE; at least according to the icons.
Anyway on this new ROM it's skipping all over from 3G to H to H+ to occasionally LTE. I heard rumblings that 4G is usually a buzzword companies use incorrectly due to a loophole, so is that what I am seeing here? Telus using 4G icon for the signal levels of 3G, H and H+?
Ideally I would like to change my icon set back to what it was, if that's not too difficult (I was hoping for something like taking them from the other ROM and pasting them into the new one, but i have a feeling it won't be that easy). If it's a pain, the knowledge of what's going on will help me just deal with it.
Thanks in advance you guys!
If its anything like AT&T this is exactly what happened. Your new ROM is reporting data connection correctly, your stock ROM only showed 4g.
Are you s-off?
And during installation did it ask you to pick a carrier?
What did you select?

Alright, cool I'll give that a shot.
Just in case it doesn't work, in terms of increasing signal capabilities its 3G, H, H+ and then LTE correct?

Would the G2 be a worthwhile upgrade from a BL locked Note 2?

So this weekend at least, the G2 is showing up as free for 2 yr upgrades, and I have a spare upgrade on my account I can use. I currently have a bootloader locked Note 2, running safestrap recovery, using a custom TouchWiz ROM. (no AOSP unfortunately for safestrap on the n2 )
I am wondering what the G2 community thinks about upgrading to this phone from a Note 2. Camera wise the G2 looks far better. The screen and battery are only slightly smaller, so I don't feel that is an issue, but how is it, nuts and bolts wise? Signal, reliability, etc. I see some GPS issues which may be of concern, and I am slightly unsure of the bootloader issue. I would prefer to unlock, root, and install what I please, and I *think* what I found is that you can push an older, unlocked bootloader to the latest update? Is that correct?
Anything else you can tell me that may help?
Thanks in advance
I came from a BL unlocked N2 and personally I love my G2. I had no issues rooting or unlocking the BL and I was running 24A. I would hands down go with the G2 if you are looking to upgrade but if you could wait and spend 200 then I would go with the G3 that troops in 2 weeks. Just my opinion.

No I have no interest in spending $200. I like spending free.
Am I correct that the bootloader on the G2 is easily unlocked still? Is 24A the latest update then?

The Freedom Tool is to get a custom recovery in this bad boy. I know one can use autorec to get a recovery, but I've read good and bad about it. I used Freedom for the recovery and ioroot25 to root.
Here's what I understand about flashing: if you're already running 24A from the official ota, then root/recovery, you can flash away (as long as the ROM is based on 24A, some are not). If you root on a 12B or 11A (I think) then you have to go and flash another zip prior to a ROM to get the 24A baseband.
I haven't flashed a custom rom so don't know about how they run. 2 reasons:
1) I feel LG did a great job with stock and with xposed, can do almost anything that a custom offers.
2) There are instances of screens being jacked up after a flash. Read through the development section and there's a dedicated thread that reports the issue. I realize warranty will cover a replacement but I'm too lazy to deal with that hassle.
Sent from my VS980 4G using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Well I did order one, so ill give it a go. Ill definitely check into the screen issue as that is a bit concerning. As long as I have root and recovery I'll be good. Seems odd that flashing a ROM would have an effect on the screen but well see. Thanks for the info
