I rooted my Note 4 the other day, but didn't flash a recovery or anything. Would it still be okay to do the Lollipop OTA update?
Apparently yes if you use kies:

Hi all,
I have a few questions that burn me. Just received the OTA notification that .569 is available (304.4 MB)
I am running .67 with stock recovery, root and phone encryption. Will those be preserved if i OTA update ?

AFAIK root is lost and recovery is rewritten. I don't use phone encryption but I guess it is ok (or it would be stupid of Sony).
My experience has always been that OTA updates break root, and most of the time you wont be able to get it back until there is an exploit for the new firmware
4.3 OTA update will take away root and you will be unable to root under 4.3 directly.
You have to use the root methods shown as below(root under 4.2-flash another recovery-flash pre-root 4.3).

OTA left my root as it is. Check my post, how I did it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50052461&postcount=36
This was the first OTA that broke my root, even with supersu in survival mode.
I updated ota from 4.2 to 4.3 and kept root.

You will get it when Google decides it is time for you to get it - sorry, you have no control over when the OTA is delivered.
However, since you have a Nexus, why don't you just download and flash the latest factory image for 5.1?
Mine did the same this last night... I had to manually install the ota to 5.0.1 to 5.1 through wugfresh toolkit.
Hey XDA,
So I have a stock att s5 running android 4.4.2. Im trying to update to 5.0 using the stock recover and adb sideload, but it keeps throwing an error at me saying "protocol fault (no status)"
How would I go about fixing this error? do i need to update to 4.4.4 first?
thank!
Im on baseband version g900AUCU2AND3
Edit: could i possibly adb sideload the NCE to NG3 zip found in this thread and proceed from there?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...to-root-g900aucu2aoa1-4-4-4-2-3-2015-t3021120
or would it be easier to go to a best buy store and have one of those guys do it for me...
I ended up downgrading to NCE... working my way to there now >_>
moderators, do whatever you do to resolved threads.
You have to take the 4.4.4 incremental update B4 taking the 5.0 update. You can update it through recovery but have to download the file from the other thread about updating to 5.0 and change the name to update.zip. You MUST BE on 4.4.4 first though. Also, there is no root for 5.0 yet. If you want to stay rooted I would wait on taking that 5.0 update.

Yeah, I'm running though the updates now. I really want to hit something or someone right now. Im finally at 4.4.4
Yeah it takes a while to do all those updates but all worthwhile if we get to keep the root. Are you on rooted 4.4.4 now or are you staying stock? I'm on rooted 4.4.4 and NOT updating to 5.0 till I know it can be rooted. If it never gets rooted,I guess I'll never take it. I like my root too much.

After downgrade to NCE 4.4.2, you have to OTA to NG3, OA1, and finally OC4 (5.0). You will lose root, and if you accept the 5.0 OTA you will not be able to root or downgrade anymore. Use this method to update to 5.0 and keep root,

Have you changed the recovery?
To update officially you need to be on stock recovery

Better whole stock ROM. Even after an unroot you'll never know what apps like kingoroot have changed in the system.
Flash complete stock ROM or better forget the ota and flash stock MM directly.
