I have already had a Gear start failing to connect due to this and is due to the short slack for the connection at the pivot point. Over extensions can result in connectivity issues after just a few times. If you notice more of a lag in connecting or you have to start pushing the connector area to get a connection, the damage is already done. I wonder how many returns Samsung might see due to this? Of course if they would make more effort with Youtube, video and Web apps as example, some of us might not be as compelled to using non Gear methods.

Yup better to freeze the app in titanium backup.
Is there a way to suspend the VR service with a easy app that does not require root?
I have the Note 4 and my Gear VR arrives Thursday.
Would like to check out the Google Cardboard stuff but the videos I have seen using the USB spring loaded connector......eek!

There currently is no app that can do this without root. To use apps out of the Oculus system, I bought a low cost VR set that I linked in a thread comparing VR units. I prefer the image being a little further back than my Note 4 Gear VR, so it is fun to try other apps and NOT wait for Oculus to allow certain apps (if ever). I would have preferred a less locked down Oculus system, but they are protective of the "experience" and want to also control the content. In their defense, both are for the most part understandable.

But....but....but..... this is XDA! Somebody will figure a hack out.

I am hoping Kingroot gets updated to support the Note 4 on Lollipop since there is an app for that I used Kingroot on my Tab S 8.4 to enable card writes and freeze bloat. Would like to do the same with the Note 4.
Without root, like me and my S6, you can use Package Disabler pro to accomplish this.
Install, open, find app and disable it.
Thats how i play google cardboard on my VR

Anyone know of an app that lets the gear work as a remote button to take a picture with your note camera? I believe the sony smartwatch has this feature...i think this would be a nice feature, as you can be in each picture you take and decide when the shutter goes off with a simple tap on the gear screen...
I had that on my Note-2 with Sony Watch.
I don't know of anything for Note-3 and Gear. However, the Note-3 by itself does allow for voice triggering of the camera.

I know you can trigger it by voice, but how cool would it be to see your note camera lens on the gear to see what picture you're taking...and once you're in the picture just tap on the screen to take the picture...
Agreed.
You have identified what could be a great app for the Gear.
I hope developers start releasing Apps for the Gear. It is disappointing that no new apps have shown on the Gear / Samsung Apps store.

This device was released very quickly in order to beat the others to the punch. Therefore, it is not refined yet. Apple will release theirs when it is consumer ready and say they are the first. People will believe it too! Not a hater. Every company claims they have the best in the world.

So I got the Gear VR today. It's ****ing amazing.... So next step. How do I get this to mirror my pc so that I can use it to play apps set up for the Oculus Rift from my computer? Any ideas where to start? Must see Hawken...

I think for now there is no good solution yet because of too high latency for VR. But if you want to watch your own 2D/3D/360° movies you can just put them on the SD card of the Note 4 to watch in Gear VR.

It works. But it's a method of screen mirroring to your device. Apparently there are some quirks that need to be worked out to get it fully operational. It requires an additional app for head tracking. Plus you need to basically mod every pc program you want to use to support what is essentially a false HMD. I'm still working on it.

I've also noticed a lot of latency issues with a lot of apps meant for cardboard versus the gear vr apps. Basically anything meant for cardboard is "ok" as far as head tracking goes. But the gear apps are nearly perfect. (you can use cardboard apps by sliding the phone into place while holding the usb connection tilted so it doesn't quite connect) As an example, I tried Vanguard V before it was released for gear using the cardboard version. The tracking lag was irritating to say the least. But when I tried the gear version, the tracking was perfect. This makes me hesitant on how well this will work in general. Though some of them are hit or miss on tracking. A few are almost as good as the gear vr stuff. Almost. I think the Gear VR headset may have additional tracking sensors built into it. After all, it says "mouse disconnected" when you remove the handset from the headset.
I think there is gyro in headset itself. There is folder called oculus in phone storage with "gyrocalibration" file inside
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app
That also could be calibration on the phone gyro.

Has anyone looked into exporting whatever software samsung is using and modifying it to work on other devices?
The N6 has a pentile 1440P display that would make for a good candidate.
What would be reason for that? It wont fit into gear vr. Without gear vr no access to gyro built into headset. Without gyro no fluid experience.

I have actually, so we could do development on emulator, I got service and oculus installing on device, had to unpack and add twlauncher sechardware framework smali into 2 of the apks, vrshell and vrsvc as well as null out some device checks in vrsetupwizard
However the main hurdle you run into is OpenGL ES 3 requirement, I tried on S4 but it is missing the front buffer extension resulting in crash - gave up at this point as I'm unsure how to add extensions to OpenGL?
Our solution in the end was not to bother installing anything, and run our app on not standard phone, it complains about no VRManager, renders fine but no head tracking (we then use cardboard api on dev phones)
If you're a developer why not just buy a Note 4 and Gear VR and charge money once the App store takes payments. I would be willing to pay for an emulator (I assume old school games/Mame). Plus wouldn't the thermal characteristics of the Nexus 6 differ from the Note 4 chassis and battery which is critical to prevent overheating/maximize performance. And based on John Carmack keynote speech we might see custom modifications made to the screen technology for future Samsung devices. Changes that would not make sense for other phones. Going down this road does not seem logical for the long term.
we do, but its expensive to buy multiple note 4s and gear vrs for everyone on such a small market, especially when we have other android devices. Sorry I was referring to the android emulator, not a game emulator.
I see that people have successfully altered the gear vr consumer edition to work with the Note 4. This is wonderful.
But, I'm wondering, has anyone altered the usb plug so that you plug your usb cable in from your pc to the gear vr?
Yes, it would require some Dremel work, but the benefit would be having a decent vr experience while using trinus vr and tridef 3d with all your favourite pc games.
Considering the gear vr price right now (cheap), its similar to the freefly (google cardboard vr's) that let you plug into your pc while you use it.
Has anyone tried this? I'll let you know if I give it a go. Optimally, you could either plug your phone into the gear, or your pc cable (both options).
I am interested too!
Thought about just replacing the old original plug with a new one. But I guess the oculus store app doesn't start anymore then. Is there a way to start this app manually?
I agree this thread is awesome and it is something that will make some xda dev famous. I molded a consumer gear vr to fit the note 4 and it has been great. I want to play oculus dk games and apps as well as other pc games. If there were 2 things I really want to further the gear mods and make it awesome it is this mod and a way to make all android games vr I really want to play dead trigger 2 in VR unfortunately I have an att note 4 sm-n910a running 5.1.1 so no root so I can't use the new sbs android
Not tried tints yet but doesn't it work over wifi

Which att note? SGH-i717 (quincyatt)?
use package disabler pro to disable the samsung gear vr service. this will prevent the occulus app from launching. if you enabled dev mode on the vr before you disable the gear vr service you will be able to use it with low persistence. all of this can be done without root. tested it on my s7 with trinusvr trial
If you have a consumer vr can it be done the same way.

Sorry note 4 sm-n910a 5.1.1
I do have dev mode and the disabler app, didn't think to go dev mode first or use the low latency. My question is, is that enough? Enough to warrent not mod ding the usb from a charger to a full blown vr input? Is it that good or even good enough? I honestly think this mod would be a god send and whoever mods it considered a god. I heard they brought up doing it to oculus and it was denied. They didn't want mobile at a value to compete with a pc platform that would go for your wallet. On the other spectrum I also wouldn't mind being able to even simply use it as intended to charge my note 4 while playing vr. That would be nice too:good:
Oh yea one more thing is Intugame woth trying or should I just stick with trinus?

Yes, but way too buggy at the moment. Try Stream Theater for Steam (and non steam) games, works via Moonlight.
I had read an article 2 days ago on an app that allows you to use cardboard apps almost natively on the Gear VR, also fixing the jitter issue and improving latency. So I bookmarked the link and came back today to get the app, poof.. it had disappeared!
Anyone have any idea why it was taken down?

The description says there might be an issue with rooted phones, if you're rooted can you confirm that it works?
I tried the CB Enabler from first post, but it seems that it requires Knox to turn-on? Because when I tried to obtan admin rights, KLMS agent pops-up. Is this behaviour normal?
You can try to use a better tool on Google Play

This is not working, after installing I let it gain admin rights but it keeps doing something forever. Then if I mount it on the GearVR it loads Oculus launcher.
I'm having the same problem - it hangs forever on"enabling admin"...
