Okay - I searched and have yet to find an answer - if this is a repeat I have missed, I apologize. Here goes.
On my T-Mo N4 5.0.1, I would like to encrypt the device but do not want to be tethered to a password (long story). The PIN mode for screen unlock is what I desire. Without rooting and running a custom ROM, is there anyway to modify the security policy to allow the PIN mode to be used with an encrypted device?
I tried encrypting it after reading somewhere else you can change to PIN once it is done (requires password or fingerprint for initial setup). The understanding was that you would have to input a password on bootup but after that screen unlocks could be done via the PIN. This was not the case and would not let me change after encryption. Decrypted, I have my options back. This is the security policy at play.
I am sure its somehow possible. My Nexus 9 tablet is encrypted (had no choice in the matter - how it came from factory) and allows any unlock method you want, so long as one is used.
Thoughts? Thanks in advance!
Just an update in case it helps anyone understand this better - still could use some help!
Had to do a factory reset on my Nexus 9 tablet thanks to a botched OTA update. It is forced encryption and does NOT force you to set any sort of unlock method. While I agree that is lousy security, it makes me really think this is policy based which leads me to believe it can be changed somewhere on the note 4. Thoughts?

Hello everyone,
This is my first post, I am trying to abide by the regulations of this forum. If I make an error please don't trip out, but let me know.
I have a HTC One M7 Phone,
It Is running Jellybean android.
I have discovered twice now that if you encrypt the phone, the option to have a pattern lock is removed and grayed out, Your forced to choose another lock method, in my case a PIN.
The only way I have managed to resolve this is by decrypting the phone, This phone can only be Decrypted via a factory reset.
I have tried again now. Phone is encrypted, and again I have been forced to change my login method, And the option to choose pattern lock is Grayed out.
I have contacted HTC Support regarding this issue and unfortunately they are unable to understand my question correctly.
I would greatly appreciate any assistance anyone can give regarding how I can have an encrypted phone with a pattern lock.
Kind Regards
Daniel
I encrypted my 32gb moto x and have discovered that my voice commands are halted by the PIN prompt. It will proceed as usual if I enter the PIN but this defeats the purpose of not having to touch the device. The only feature that seems to work is giving a command to call out. Is there any way around this? I'm not sure how this would be possible without creating a vulnerability in the system, i.e. mimic my voice. Could I only encrypt part of the drive to nestle photos and other data in? The skip is a little better but still I have to "touch" the device.
Thanks

I don't think this has to do with encryption. Mine isn't encrypted but I do have a pin screen unlock and it prompts me to unlock it when I do voice searches like "who won the last world series" or whatever. I don't understand why but I think that is normal operation of the phone and not due to you having encrypted it.
By the way, was there any performance hit or did it warn you that HD video or anything like that would be impacted by encrypting the device?
reviving this thread - I would like to encrypt my phone, but would that mean having to place a password on my device each time I unlock it? I would rather the password/PIN enabled at bootup only.
basically, I do not want to lose the ability to use bluetooth via my car and the touchless controls if my device requires to be touched due to the encryption.
anyone that has encrypted their phone care to chime in?
thanks!

i had to encrypt my phone as a result of my employer's corporate email policies. encryption requires you to input a password when your phone is powered on/rebooted, in order to decrypt the device. in addition to that, boot times take twice as long because the OS boots once, realizes your data is encrypted, then boots again.
as far as unlocking the device, encryption forces you to have at minimum NFC unlock (moto skip), which isn't as painful as having to put in a pin every time. however, all active notifications and touchless controls work as expected.
with that said, my corp policies put so many restrictions on my phone, i couldn't even use the touchless controls with my phone locked. device administrator blocked them. long story short, i'm rooted now.

thanks for the response. I probably would encrypt if I didn't have to do that moto skip or password unlock. just don't want to have to carry that piece around with me and take the time to enter a password (I know, I know, it only takes a second with a pattern, but still quite annoying). but I suppose that's the price you pay for security.
Hello
My Nexus 6 was stolen.
The phone was NOT rooted, bootloader was NOT unlocked and the screen was locked by the symbol. Android Device Manager can't connect to this phone since a few days and from that moment I don't have of course any location information.
Is it very difficult to change IMEI of this phone?
Could you flash new system without knowing security symbol?
If somebody guessed my symbol and wipe/flash my phone, is there a way for him to bypass login to my google account and just login to his? (I'm talking about this new security feature bringed with lolipop)

If you were on 5.1 or above, your phone is totally secure. Unless the thief knew your screen lock, your Google password, you are safe. To even prevent further, I recommend changing your Google account password.

I changed my google password, but screen lock wasn't very complicated... so I'm a bit affraid.
I hope the police will find it by IMEI localisation or thief will give up and return it somehow... But tbh more likely is that he will just throw it away.
I encrypted my S6A but it forced me to use a password (6char+some numbers) at first I thought this was to unlock it upon restart, but it requires the password whenever I want to unlock it. I factory reset it to see if that would help but it won't let me set just a pin if I enable encryption. Entering the password each time is extremely annoying to say the least.
Has anyone figured out how to enable encryption and use the pin unlock instead of a password? My Xperia tablet allows it so I know it's not a lollipop limitation...
Looks like it's a Samsung limitation. 3 Samsung tablets (Note 8, Tab 4 and Tab S2) require the stupid long 6char+numbers password for encrypted devices.
Ridiculous
Hi,
Is there currently any way to disable the unlock pattern on a SM-N9600?
I have been using the same pattern every since i got this phone, and used the same pattern on the phones before it. I woke up yesterday morning to the phone telling me i need to input the unlock pattern like it does every morning, but it wouldn't accept the pattern that i know is correct. I know all the passwords for the google accounts and samsung account that is on the phone, and my fingerprint is also on it. Is there any way to use any of the above to unlock the phone?
I also tried using find my mobile, but it's saying remote unlock is disabled on the phone. USB debuging is also not enabled on the phone as far as i know.
I contacted Samsung customer service but got no real help, they couldn't even answer how many attempts I have to try the pattern and if numerus failures would eventually wipe the phone.
Any help at all is appreciated.
You should be able to unlock your Samsung device in Find My Mobile, then you can go into the Settings > Security and reset your security preferences.

Thanks for the reply, but Find My Mobile doesn't work. It is able to locate the device, but it says Remote unlocking is disabled.

What about the Google one?
Best bet in the future is to keep the phone glued to you (not hard to do) and avoid passwords/ lockouts.
More times than not the only people they lock out is you. Hardware failures many times lead to complete lockouts. Hardware failures happen unpredictably... been there, done that
No password, no problems; don't get too clever for your own good.

The google one doesn't allow unlock anymore, only lock.
If i was getting clever with the pattern and that caused it, I wouldn't feel so bad, I'd know it's my fault, I'd tell myself i deserved it, but this is basically the only pattern i've use since my first android phone.
It seems my only hope is to pray for some kind of exploit that can bypass that pattern screen.
I had no idea hardware failures like that happened, I have neever heard of it before now.
Thanks though.

Yeah it never accord to me either until a laptop bios got corrupted and completely locked the machine down permanently. Fun times.
This is another reason why I always have/use an SD card as a data drive on phones.
Unlike the laptop you can't easily access the internal memory of a locked phone.
