AOSP SMS vs Hangouts vs google messenger - Nexus 6 Themes and Apps

I am going to move away from textra and need a new sms/mms app that is simple, lightweight and fast..
I am currently looking at these three apps but I am not sure what their differences are and which I should use?
AOSP SMS which comes with DirtyUnicorn ROM
Hangouts
Google messenger
Any suggestions? Thanks

I use Google Messenger. I find it is lightweight, doesn't have many tweaking options, but love that each contact can be assigned a different color.
Hangouts is nice if you also have Hangouts contacts...
AOSP, usually you will find the CM version which has nice tweaks, but still needs some Material Design improvements.

I personally like Google messenger

any reason for ditching textra? Ive been using it for the past 8+ months and really like it but since ive grabbed a nexus 6 ive debated switching to google messenger.

I switch back and forth between Google messenger and textra. Both are great apps

Man, I'm guessing due to the new ads. Just use an ad blocker. The dev even states that most nexus users use the free version with ads. Wonder why?

I like the tweaks of cm aosp messengers just to last to try and pull the latest one from 12.1 and use it so I'm using google messenger til I find 12.1 aosp cm apk pulled alrdy

Nothing compares to AOSP mms, in terms of feature set, lean footprint and overall flexibility...one can choose from a vast array of sharing options, attach media from a multitude of sources (as opposed to the retarded way that messenger does it, with its attach options of real-time photo or recent pics), signature line, drop-in notification feature that allows you to respond pretty much on the fly...the list goes on and on.
And unlike these choices from the play store, the apk is less than 5 MB, and when residing in system, priv-app, it'll remain lean and work swiftly.
Play Store alternatives with even half of the features balloon up to 20+ MB before a single option is set.
And it's themable, with the smallest of overlay apks to fully theme it.
Why this isn't in every AOSP rom is just baffling.

I'm using it now...I just grabbed it from a different AOSP 5.1.1 rom ,and pushed the folder and apk to system, priv-app, set permissions, and rebooted.
Unfortunately, it can't be completely themed in that rom, inasmuch as the commits to do so are not present. I made the request and it was rejected, which is the right of the dev, and which I respect.
I'm not complaining at all, but just know that if you put it in Chroma, the action bar will be themed, but it'll be white backgrounds everywhere.
Ugh.

DirtyUnicorns ROM > Chroma
DirtyUnicorns ROM comes with a modified/improved + themed AOSP messenger. And yes I use it too now instead of google messenger or other 20MB alternatives.

Evolve sms I have been using it for about 2 years now. I like it a lot. A lot of customizations. Plus a lot of updates and development. Hundreds of themes on the play store most are free. I tried it and never went back. It is that good. I have never had one problem with it.

Just download Benzo (it's not a block build, so one can actually see what is in the rom zip), unzip, and push the folder and apk to system, priv-app, fix permissions, and reboot.
Just make certain that you have no mms layers applied, or the app will force close.

Tired of all the crap running in background and wasting memory and cpu. Rooted and was going to use Titanium or Root Explorer to kill the crap, but yours looks a more organised method.
Will apply it tonight when home and see how it goes.

That's actually the point of most of these ROMS. Provide a fast & stable base to work from. Everything you wanted/used is available in the Market. Just add back the things YOU want (and thus none of the stuff you didn't use in the first place).

This is a early rom, some things may not work (however I have had no issues thus far) Please do not whine if something does not work, instead explain what is not working, use screenshots if possible (menu+volume down) and let me know if you can replicate the issue.

1. A lot of people have been having problems with MIUI Releases hotfixes come out but do not get added to the roms.
2. A lot of people use launcher pro along with MIUI this saves them a step
3. People don't like ads, especially not ones that take up half of the screen on certain websites.
4. MIUI is a testing rom, by removing/replacing the broken applications and aspects of the rom people can have a stable, minimal MIUI.
5. I am bored, seriously this is a big reason. I decided to get bored and start customizing a rom to my liking, I feel others may like it as well... some will some will not.
6. Some people that I personally know have had friends of theirs root there phone and install a rom for them and were uncomfortable using recovery to flash hotfixes so their friends (usually me) than hotfix the phones, update it to the way they want, etc... its a time waster to have to do updates after every new update to MIUI this one will be updated after all the hotfixes for the roms are out.
7. Why not?
Thank you! I love this rom

TBH, I've never tried MIUI on the Inc. It used to be my rom of choice on my Nexus One. So I had no idea that all these apps were broken, so that makes sense to remove them. But why remove the notifications? That;s what threw me off.

Business Calendar was named the best android calendar application by Lifehacker.com.

Doesn't have a dark theme but it's a great app. The only one I could find in my quick search with a dark theme is Gemini Calendar:

It looks pretty slick, you'd have to try it out to see if you like it.

Messaging app

I just had a thought. I really don't like the revo's messaging app (Mms.apk)
What would happen if I replaced it with the Mms.apk from another system? Like from CM7 or something? Would I lose the ability to text message? Maybe lose MMS?
Has anyone tried this on the revo?
Felt adventurous and backed up my phone, and then tried it.
Installed the AOSP 2.3.3 Mms.apk and it seems to work.
Will report back soon with full testing info.
Well, SMS works but MMS doesn't. I tried using the Mms.apk from CM7 for the Thunderbolt but had the same problem. Anyone know how to modify a stock AOSP Mms.apk to work on the Revo?
If you want a new Mms app there's tons of apps like Go Sms Pro, Handcent and some others Handcent and Go Sms pro are the most popular ones. Both of which are free.

I gave handcent another shot last night, didnt even make it a couple hours....although I hate how the stock one looks on the revo, i just like how fast and smooth it is compared to third party apps. They all get too bloated with features imo
also, go and handcent seem to consume quite a bit of RAM

Yeah, I get where you're coming from, but I still don't like how the LG app works. I love the stock android messaging app. I do not understand why carriers feel the need to get in there and fiddle with every damn thing in the OS. I almost wish Google and the OHA had pulled an Apple, and restricted the carriers from screwing with Android. I understand "open is open", but some of these OEM android systems are just horrible. MotoBLUR, anyone? -shudder-
I think it would have been good to require carriers, if they wanted to release a phone with a "tinkered" android OS on it, to also provide a ROM download to users who would like to just have a stock experience. No BLUR, no Sense, no LG whatever, no TouchWIZ..

Never had any issues, don't know what some people are complaining about. There are themes but you can also just change the color of the background, the incoming font and out going font, bubbles or no bubbles and change the colors of the bubbles.. very customizable. Think someone in here made a handcent theme in the themes and apps section.

What's Your Daily Driver ROM?

I've been trying different ROM and each one seems to have their own unique hiccups. I'm looking for a ROM that stable and have all the features as a stock ROM. So far the closest to that is Aurora Full Note7 by Lanc-City. The only issues I'm having is that it sometimes it lag, mms group text doesn't work, and charging does not charge right.
[ROM] Maximum OvrDriVE 6.0.1 MM V3.2 (8/24/16) [910T/910W8/910T3] has been good, however, the dev has moved on so there is no continued development on it.

If you want everything working then go stock, root, install xposed with your favorite modules and get a good launcher.
I go back and forth between stock and project L ROM by Lanc-City.

I was using EPJ2 for a while and it's the best stock update so far. Had no issues with barely any lag. But I rooted I am now using Aurora 3.1 since I miss my note 7 lol. I had to use Textra since group messaging isn't working and no wifi calling. It's so far filling that void. I'm sure a lot of ex note 7 users can relate.
AICP and Broken are amazing
My daily driver, seemingly forever, will remain Emporia ROM (AKA Rapture ROM) on 5.1.1 Lollipop
I don't have an explanation why, but this ROM is WAY more fluid in every single aspect of the UI than any other ROM on marshmallow or Lollipop, and I have tried them all. Yes I am aware you can set animation speeds to be faster, etc. But even with them set to the default speed of 1x (I default use .5x for most), the entire ROM is more FLUID. Each transition is more smooth, every app opens faster and without lag, scrolling in every single app is WAY more fluid, etc. I actually noticed a huge visual difference between this ROM and stock or custom MM. The user experience is just way better in every way than Maximum Overdrive, Stock MM, Stock LL, etc.
Battery life is approximately the same for me on both MM and LL using Greenify on both. Doze doesn't seem to make a difference at all for me, when using greenify on both versions of Android. I get within 15 minutes of SOT on either one, so battery life is practically the same.
Finally, Lollipop still has all the features that Samsung so foolishly removed in MM! Namely, Smart Select is still amazing, it still has the engine for optical character recognition that is missing in MM, it still can select multiple things, and it can still open apps if it detects and address/phone number/etc!
So, basically, Emporia is the best ROM for me, and I have literally tried all of them. I do miss the full screen action memo's of Lollipop, but the extreme speed and fluidity throughout the system, never encountering a single bug, and the amazing features still present in Smart Select beat out all the insignificant improvements of MM.
Plus, I ported an AOSP theme for the notification area to Emporia ROM, that makes it a much more lovely experience.

Is this the stock that you used?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-tmobile/general/odin-firmware-epj2-tw-6-0-1-note-4-t3486992
My daily driver is the N5/N7_6.0.1_port V1 and I use Nova launcher, a dark icon pack, dark wallpaper and (Google-inspired) Material Design dark from the samsung theme store. Basically looks like clean, dark AOSP on top and has all the Samsung features underneath.
Everything from the font and theming is smaller and more refined in the Note 5 which makes a huge difference to me and really is a big reason why the Note 5's screen looks more nicer than the Note 4 screen imo (they're both 1440p!).
Everything is quite stable but the stock camera app doesnt work (for me, I dont know abt others) (I use a third party app) and I also use a third party app for video playback (I cant find the stock video app). Keep in mind this is a chinese n5 port and there is some chinese characters next to the time and date. Time to brush up on some chinese I guess. (I havent seen any other chinese on it thou lolz)
Its pretty good for a port though based on fluidness. And yes I tried the Emporia ROM recommended earlier. I loved it and everything WaterMan said was true but the Note 4 default theming and fonts are too big imo for a quad HD screen. Also that's where I got my inspiration to get the Material Design dark theme so my notification bar and settings look like stock aosp (Thanks WaterMan!).
I also use a snapdragon-optimized chromium browser so its more snappier.
And that's my daily driver, for now. Lolz
PS: be sure to upgrade to EPE3 (6.0.1) before flashing.

The stock camera was working fine for me...the sports shot, food shot, etc. extensions weren't.
Can you post some screenshots of your setup? ?

I've never used those features before Now I want them!
Here you go!
The red icons are purposely not coherent (egg).
For a minimalistic dark setup, simplistic dark black and/or grey icons maybe some sophistication but very minimal and clean.
I took pics of Material design dark and Material design black themes. (Disclaimar: black theme is $1)
Wallpaper from 244 Quad HD Wallpapers for Galaxy Note 4 collection on XDA.
Material design black
I'm using CM-Remix but it's giving me mad problems. Mainly, the Google app keeps crashing and it locks up when rebooting, sometimes requiring 2 or 3 reboots or wiping cache. It's godawful annoying but my hatred for TouchWiz is the only reason I torture myself with this ROM.
I'm looking for a new ROM myself. Looks like a new build of DirtyUnicorns is coming very soon. I may give that another shot.

Weird because I'm using it and I don't have any problems!!
I've been on AICP for several months, very stable. Resurrection Remix is getting close to being pretty stable, it crashes the phone when uninstalling apps - only problem I found that prevented me from dailying it.
Gonna try going back to TW for a while for better camera usage, will be flashing Overdrive 6.0.1 for the first time.

Looks like it but mine was done via OTA before I decided to root.

I have no clue what's going on with my phone as every ROM I tried is either lagging, freeze, or randomly reboot. I'm thinking about going back to stock. When I was on stock it would lag as well but not as bad as what I'm experiencing now. I'm currently using my phone without my microsd card to see if that is the culprit.
