[Q] soft bricked - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have softbricked my I8190. I do have Recovery and Download mode. System just is black, sometime a little flashing. Odin has been unable to flash anything for recovery.img. Odin was able to flash a stock rom as well as a rooted stock rom. This doesn't work anymore. The only way I could flash a recovery has been in terminal app when the phone was running. I wrote to the mmcblk for recovery and did have TWRP on it. It was cool and could flash a few other roms. At on point I wiped/formatted system using f2fs.
Then I decided to go back to stock. I forgot to put the system back to ext4. I wrote back a stock recovery. I used Odin to flash a stock rom that worked before and doesn't work. I never could flash any custom roms with Odin.
I need to either get TWRP back on or otherwise wipe/format system back to ext4. I have some tools that will do this if I can enable USB Debugging, which I can't. I haven't been able to use a pit file and reformating with Odin.
Any good ideas?
Thanks,
Steve

Hi, have you tried the recovery mode in kies?
It will restore your phone in a factory condition (even if you already flashed custom roms and rooted it).
Then, you can flash whatever rom you want.

[Q] Soft bricked phone need help

This was my first flash and here is my noob story. I flashed a custom rom last night and didn't like it. When I went to flash it back to stock I did not properly disable voodoo lagfix and it froze on odin. I pulled the battery and ended up with the triangle and computer signs. It is a 1008 series so 3 button doesn't work although I can access download mode with a Jig. According to the Voodoo site this can be repaired by "Re-installing Voodoo by flashing the Kernel with Odin: Your ext4 data will be back if the previous procedure didn’t format DATA partition, or Starting into recovery and wipe data. Warning, like it says, you’ll loose your personal data. If you don’t have backup, use this option in last resort." My question is how do I flash just the kernel with Odin? I currently have Odin 1 click and realize this isn't the proper program. Any help would be appreciated.

If its Odin one click then you don't need to disable voodoo. Try again? How long did you wait?
Don't do all that kernel stuff... u probably lost some data when you unplugged the phone... just re-do the whole flash with a ROM
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
Is there a way I can just reflash the custom rom I had installed without having to go back to stock then use CWM to do it? Is there a way to get into recovery mode instead of download mode? ADB says there is no device connected so i cant use that.
If you still have the rom zip on your internal sd you can reflash that in clockwork recovery and see if it works.

[Q] Where to get image of recovery partition and restore it?

I'd love a little help. I'm new to Android and the Note - and love it.
I gave the Stunner ICS rom a try and it was very impressive but was missing Swype and the S-pen apps, so decided to go back to GB. I tried using CWM to restore my backup which failed... and left the machine not booting and not able to get back into the CWM recovery mode.
So I tried writing cwm to the recovery partition using heimdall flash --recovery... but I think I've totally futzed it. And of course the backups didnt backup the recovery partition! (From what I've read now, I think I should have flashed Abyss and then done the recovery... Sigh I hate being wise after the event!)
I have managed to restore the stock rom using Odin from windows - and it boots and works. Has the original recovery option. But when I try and flash say Abyss - it flashes ok (heimdall flash --kernel ...) but the reboot fails (yellow ! triangle) and Recovery boot does the same - warning triangle, and all I do is get the Download mode again.
So any hints?
Or has anyone got a backup of the recovery partition for an N7000 I could get a copy of and hints at how to restore it? (I think I can do cat file|adblinux shell "su -c 'cat > /dev/mmcblk0pXX' " but I dont know which partition is the right one - I suspect p6. Or possibly heimdall flash --recovery ... (do they take the same format of file? raw filesystem data?)
Heh - I'm not sure how but I seem to be out of the hole I was in. I flashed again the CF-Root kernel and managed to install my backup!!!
So it appears I dont need to recover the recovery partition. Thank goodness...
I suspect the reason was that the original GB ROM you flashed was not rooted.
The CF-root Kernel does add root & CWM, so now you should be able to get the Abyss kernel working too?? Wondering?
The answer might be useful to somebody else too ...

Galaxy Note 3 AT&T. Can't boot to ROM-Safestrap boots straight to stock recovery mode

Galaxy Note 3 AT&T. Can't boot to ROM-Safestrap boots straight to stock recovery mode
Hello guys, for some reason I'm not able to boot to my rooted stock 5.0 ROM (Galaxy NOTE 3, AT&T, Lollipop 5.0). Everything was working fine, then I booted to safestrap to backup my stock ROM (which went succesfully) as I wanted to tweak some things in my phone afterwards. I dont really know what happened but since then I cant boot normally to the ROM, but my phone goes straight to the stock recovery mode. I've tried everything to my knowledge already, from the stock recovery the boot option just sends me back again to the same recovery mode. If I press the "continue" button on safestrap initial screen it also sends me to the stock recovery mode, same If I just wait 10 seconds, same if I try rebooting from within the safestrap options. I can't get pass the recovery mode to the normal ROM booting. Not sure what's going on here as I just performed a backup, didnt install nor restore any ROM before having this problem...The backup seems to be there in my external card so I guess I could restore it to the stock slot hoping this could send me to boot normally to the ROM.....Is there anything I'm missing here???...Does any body know what may be happening??....any advise is greatly appreciated!!...Many thanks!!
@momo909
Safestrap does not work with the lollipop oc1 kernel... in order to use safestrap with lollipop, you have to flash the nc2 kit kat kernel first, then boot into safestrap. There is a tool called the nc2 flasher you can use use - you should read the following thread for tips and tricks.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2989141
Kernel Flasher
What you would have needed to do after backing up your rom... before you left safestrap you would have needed to flash the recovery flashable oc1 kernel, then reboot. There is a recovery flash able oc1 kernel around here on the forums in several places... here is a link I found
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934551552
But since it seems like you didn't reflash the oc1 kernel before leaving safestrap you will need to use odin to reflash the oc1 kernel...
If you go to this thread, you can download the odin flashable oc1 kernel and then use odin to flash the kernel to your device. Then you should be able to reboot your phone normally.

*** disclaimer... I'm not a developer, but I flashed numerous roms on this n900a and this is the struggle we currently face with our locked bootloader. Things can go wrong, but if I we're having the issue you described, this is how I would try to get my device back up and running.

Phone doesn't boot, just samsung logo

Hello, I have an s3 mini I8190N model, with CM 11.0 kitkat 4.4.4(cm11.0_golden.nova.20150108) installed on it since nearly its release, the phone worked very fine, till today I entered the ROM manager app and pushed the "Boot to Recovery" button, so now it doesn't boot neither to the system nor to the recovery. I remember having CWM on it.
What I get now is only the "Samsung S3 mini..." splash screen, nothing else.
I have these files ready on my computer:
Recovery-CWM-I8190-Official-TOUCH-6.0.2.7.ODIN.zip
cm11.0_golden.nova.20150108.zip
What should I do now ??
You probably soft bricked your phone, I suggest you to check if you still can go into download mode and flash with Odin a wipe file and then a stock rom, once it is working again flash twrp recovery instead of cwm with Odin and try not to use rom manager, I've heard it causes the brick you have.

Not if you flash the wipe file, you can try flashing the stock rom without the wipe but It's recommended to do a clean install. Another option is to flash a file called PARAM to see if it solves the bootloop. But the way I fixed a softbrick in my phone was flashing param, wipe and stock rom in that order with Odin.
Are you able to go into recovery?

I will install TWRP through Odin v3 on the phone, then I'll flash without wiping data, then I'll recover necessary data(especially contacts) and then redo a clean install with wiping all the rubbish files.
I will tell you after I follow these steps on whether it was successful or not.
Thank you very much!

No problem, flash the custom recovery after the stock rom though.

Effectively, I installed the missing recovery software (TWRP), and after that I selected from the boot menu in TWRP the "System" entry, then it booted fine and I didn't lose any of my data. Though I have to make a clean flash next time, by cleaning the dalvik cache... etc.
Thank you for your support!

Can't flash recovery on my S3

Hello, just bought an used i8190. Since last friday i have been trying to flash a custom recovery on this phone via Odin, but after i flash it returns to the default recovery on next boot.
Yes, i have unchecked the "Auto-reboot" option on Odin. I turn off the phone and then manually enter recovery but with no results. I rooted the phone pretty easily and installed both TWRP and CWM apps to flash from android, but they don't work either (twrp crashes always and CWM just gives me an error.
Mi baseband model is XXAll2
kernel is 3.0.31 [email protected] (root name seems weird)
I searched the forum and found similar cases with the baseband, but even so i haven't found a concrete solution.
I even flashed a new pre-rooted rom from this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2030282
Mi compilation number has changed to XXAMG1 but the baseband remains the same. I can't flash a recovery whatever i try.
I hope someone can give me an answer, cause i really want to use this phone feautures to it's fullest
Update:
Somehow, i managed to flash CWM via it's app successfully. However, when i tried to flash the TWRP via zip all i got was a blank screen and the phone booted directly to Android. I had to reflash the cwm with the app. However, i tried flashing via odin the Lineage os 14 from novafusion and i got a bootloop, reflashed the old stock firmware and now my device works but the recovery doesn't, and can't even flash this time via the app.
I tried flashing via ODIN stock recovery and other recoverys and i still get the same result. I have downloaded some stock roms, but im afraid to flash them in case i end up in a bootloop and unable to access recovery still
Any clues?

Flash the stock rom as it will fix bootloops and bricked devices. Make sure to have the right ROM and flash it with Odin. The os may take longer on first boot and make sure to factory reset it as data may cause bootloops, then try flashing the recovery.
I flashed twrp 3.1.1 through Odin
