[Q] Tab A questions - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Great! Got the new Tab A yesterday and I have some questions. And OF COURSE there is no manual available and OF COURSE the tech support folks don't have a clue. Here's my questions:
It says I can have the device come on when I open my tab cover. Doesn't work.
The lights on the bottom 2 keys do not light. Tech Support says it'll take a factory reset. On a device less than 24 hrs out of the box.
The left bottom key used to be the menu key. Now it opens multiple old pages. Handy but how do I access menu options now?
Little things like this... Or maybe this is all associated with Lollipop? No idea because no manual and ignorant support personnel.

manuals, soft-keys, and more...

Not sure if you have the 8.0" or 9.7" version, so I have provided both PDF links to the user manuals:
- SM-T350 Wi-Fi Tab A 8.0 - samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SM-T350NZBAXAR
- SM-T550 Wi-Fi Tab A 9.7 - samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SM-T550NZAAXAR
[Note: Click "Manuals & Downloads" then "See More" for PDF link]
For the cover: I would verify that the magnetic parts of the cover are lining up, and perhaps repositioning them by taking the cover off/on. Another suggestion is to go into Settings > System > Accessories > and toggle "Automatic unlock" (turn it off, then back on).
Finally, I would also try a simple reboot and Safe Mode at worst case scenario (please note that App Cache and Data may be reset with Safe Mode, so use this step as a last resort).
Soft Keys: As with most of tablets in the 'Tab' series this does not light up by design.
(We usually ask customers to verify Power Saving mode is disabled but this is not applicable for this device.)
In regards to the Menu key: This is a concept change to match the changes in the Android UI. I believe with Kit Kat you could either long press the Recent Apps (fka Menu Key) or select the "More" or "..." option on the screen. However with this Tab A since it has Lollipop, it would be selecting the "MORE" button (usually top right) or in certain apps the circle action button (usually bottom right).

This is a step back
: /
Some older apps rely on hardware menu key..
So there must be some work around to access it

one solution:
> go to settings, personal, accessibility, dexterity and interaction, assistant menu, turn it on and while in the app needing the menu, press the assistant button, scroll to the more options button and that will bring up the menu.

On my Galaxy Tab S3 the app "Galaxy Button Lights 2" resolved the problem. But I tried to install that app on my wife's 8" Tab A, and it did not appear in the Play store, which usually means that its not compatible with the device.

I literally searched for hours trying to find out if the new Galaxy Tab A 8 I just bought was defective because the soft keys did not light up. This was very helpful thank you for actually providing an answer.

[Q] [Question] Need some quick help getting themes to work here

So I just picked up this phone for free from one of my friends and I'm having trouble installing themes. Changing the background around seems easy enough and the phone seems to be in good order and shape but I can't get the designer themes(or any theme, really) to work here. I'm running WM 6.5 Professional(CE OS 5.2.21856 (Build 21856.5.0.65)).
I can't really see what I'm doing wrong. I just don't have access to a specific menu. I followed a few basic tutorials on where to go to pick my theme.
I boot up my phone
I press the Start menu button in the top left
I press Settings
Here's where it differentiates from what I've heard of.
Search YouTube for a video titled "Windows Mobile 6.5 Designer Themes" by an account called pocketnowvideo.
If you look at that YouTube video, around 1:15 you can see the guy press Settings in the Start menu and it brings him to a sub-menu while still in the Start menu. For me, it's different here. Granted, he's using an HTC and I'm equipped with an Omnia, but the menu should still be the same if the OS is the same, no?
So anyways, he taps settings and the menu he gets shows some buttons like Bluetooth, Lock, Sounds and Notifications, and Today. That Today is the button I'm looking for but I can't find it.
Instead, my menu isn't a sub-menu; it's an entirely different menu altogether, seperate from the Start menu that's shown in the video. In my Settings menu, I have two tabs: Basic Settings and Advanced Settings. Neither of these two tabs have a button that says "Today", but the Basic Settings tab has a button that says Display and Light. If I tap on it, it has a button that says Theme and it allows me to select my theme in there. There's also another button that says Items on Today but I'll get to that in a bit.
When I select my theme from the themes offered, nothing changes. Literally nothing(well actually, I think once the colour scheme might have changed, but only slightly and that's it). I can change the wallpaper in a different section of the Display and Light menu but the theme doesn't seem to want to budge.
So moving onto Items on Today button, it allows me to enable what items I want to see on the front of today, as well as the choice of enabling or disabling widgets. Except that when I choose the items for today, the items look very boring and not as vivid and vibrant as they do on the designer themes. They're just 10 point Arial font, nothing more.
tl;dr I can't access the proper Settings menu to properly change a theme, how do I do it?
bump, someone needs to know about this
you are using the samsung UI, just go to samsung settings -> general settings-> samsung touchwiz UI and turn it off. press the start button again then u will go to window's mobile start menu.
I turned that off already.

[Q] Revert "recently used" button to "back"?

My apologies if this has already been addressed - searched but turned up nothing useful.
Call me old fashion - or just set in my ways - but I cannot get past this lack of a physical/capacitive menu button. I'm coming from the Note 2, where I'd used NOVA to set the long-hold Home key to be the recently used app list. I almost NEVER used it - yet I use the menu button in nearly every app. I cannot see how the recently used app has a higher draw than the menu, but I digress...
Has anyone figured out how to re-map the buttons?

I have an s5 and it took me a while to get used to this also. In most apps if you long hold the recents button it will bring up the app settings or options menu. I also just placed the phone settings icon in the drawer on the home screen for easy access to phone settings menu.

You need xposed, and install xposed additions! I hate the back button on the right side so I switched it around and now it's on the left side. Just turned off the hard keys lights also.

[Q] Black Circle Three Dots Floating Button

Hi Everyone,
I am using HTC One (M7) unrooted that was recently upgraded to Android Lollipop 5.0.2 and I started noticing a black button with three white dots appearing on my screen when I enter certain apps. Tapping it would just toggle the settings menu in the app. Double tapping it wouldn't do anything. Press hold would enable me to move the button to anywhere I like on the screen.
I have no use for it since I have it set up from my Settings that I would open the settings menu by long pressing my Home button. Does anyone also know of this, and if so, how do I remove it? I attached a screen shot for your reference (look at top right corner). Thanks in advance!
I'm interested in finding a solution to this too. No luck in the default.xml, at least for search terms "overflow" and "menu". MaximusHD 52.0, 5.0.2
Confirming this is really annoying & I'd like to know if there is a way to get rid of it?
Hi, I've got the same with galaxy s6 edge and android 5.0.2
It seems that only apps without direct implementation of the android three dots menu have this problem.
Could somebody help please ?
floating button
Same here. Irritating whilst using Mobo Player
The only way you are gonna get rid of it is to hide it in the app itself. With less and less phone with buttons the more you will see this.
Solution
I found myself frustrated at this myself today.
The solution is to go to Settings > Display > Buttons > Home and change "press and hold" from Google Now to Menu.
That removes the button from all apps, and you can just hold the home button to access the menu for those apps that need it.

[Q] How to restore missing 3 dots menu for legacy apps?

I use Tapatalk v2 alot and also some other legacy apps.
Everything is fine on my S6 Edge, but on my N920C I have no 3 dots balloon and therefore I cannot access those app settings.
Does anybody know how to get it back if the device is not rooted?
Long press the back button. If nothing happens the app doesn't support android 5.1 .1 yet. Another way to pull up more options button is via the assistance menu.
Settings >accessibility >dexterity and interaction >assistant menu
Had to get ahold of a 3rd party apps developers to get them to update to support back long press

Hmm thanks, but then it looks & act way different from the one in the S6 Edge (with v5.1.1 too).
Is there really no other fix when it's not a rooted device?
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (SM-N920C) using stock ?v5.1.1 Samsung firmware

Thank you so much for the recommendation to use the adjustment for dexterity. I spent about 5 hours last night while setting up my S7 Edge - randomly researching how to do this with no luck. I have one "critical" legacy app or folders that I was about to set up manually since I couldn't get to the menu to import my previous settings.
THANK YOU!! WAHOO!! LOL.?
Long press on a blank space on your home screen
you're welcome
I had the three dots before I did a factory reset. Now its gone

Swipe to resize window not available after oneUI upgrade?

Hey,
Not sure if anyone else has noticed but after the OneUI update I cant swipe down from top left to resize windows.
This was a really useful productivity feature when multitasking (especially at work).
you used to be able to enable "popup view" then you could swipe down from top left to "pop-out" windows but now the only way to do this is a long-winded long press on multiview window then long press again on the top of app then select pop-up view... its much less effective than just swiping down (also you need to follow this same process for each window you want to have floating...
Does anyone know how to get the older much better way of working again? - or has it gone for good?! :crying:
Cheers

It was already discussed a few times. It's removed, all the good multiwindow features that we had in nougat/oreo in galaxy phones are gone. The oneUI solution is close to the google stock one. No swipe from corner, no menu between two split screen apps, no fast way to split screen via holding recents or swipe/hold (but it fires google assistant for example), no hold card in recents for fast split or popout. Everything was removed and this is really bad for my productivity. Feature that was marketed, especially with the note 9 that is phone for productivity and multitasking, feature that samsung were praised for how much better is vs the other android makers solution - removed. Well, good job.
Wow, I had not realised all. Of that is now gone... Sadness!!

Wrong, if you mean split screen mode it still exists. On OneUi you gota open recent apps and then hold down on app icon to get a menu and from there you got split screen mode. Also popup window exists still aswell. Which can be found in same menu as split screen. Swipe from corner can be enabled again in settings on One UI

Read my post again, I never said those features are removed. We(I) were talking about the shortcuts that were fast and convenient. Simple two examples:
I am watching youtube, decides I want to also msg on viber. Before I can only hold recents - open viber and start typing without the video interruption. Right now you will go to recents, video WILL interrupt, you will press the icon on the card, select split screen, then viber, then you will press play and wait for the video to start. Second scenario is when you decide you want to switch two split screen apps place - there is no mid menu anymore, so you need to close/open them. pop-out is also a lot slower to do and with more steps. Generally it's 3-4 times slower to do the same now vs oreo and the funny thing is - they easily could had avoided that - popout from corner option in the advanced menu, swipe recents and hold for instant split screen (right now it's like that for google assistant - swipe and hold, never mistrigger it so it's good) and return of the mid menu between two split apps. Simple, but they removed it all. They even removed in the newer second base that was released after the first one a leftover for hold recents when navigation bar is on for instant split screen.
I am still expecting this option to be reenabled by samsung. It was seriously useful as hell and now i feel my phone is half broken

Looks like it might solve a bit. However i cannot access it from my country through samsung store. Do you have any suggestion where I can get it safely online? Thanks.

Try Nice lock from xda:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-9/themes/nicelock-module-download-links-module-t3923844
It's Good Lock for the places that can't get it from Galaxy store.
Everything you need is on first post, the launcher and modules...
Edit.
It doesn't bring back the hold down recent key for multiwindow though. You now have to have an active app running, tap on recent key, select and hold down the second app you want and slide it to top or bottom of screen to activate split screen.
