My mother has an old OB with 2.2.2
I want to update it with a ROM stable for everyday use. And which would not require maintenance.
Which ROM is recommended and how to upgrade from 2.2.2?

Marvel 9 (GB) is about as stable as stable can be. Don't mess with anything else FOR SOMEONE ELSE, especially family.

Now my 8 year old is going to use this mainly as a music player and maybe basic games, without SIM. Maybe we will put a SIM if needed sometimes. Which ROM would you then recommend. How is Nameless?

Again, for battery life, stability, and performance, I wouldn't put anything else on a P970/OB higher than Gingerbread (Marvel 9).
ICS (4.0) was factory on the P970, and it was buggy and unstable. I did enjoy ICS on the OB, when it was working; I reverted back to GB on the OB and never looked back.
There are JellyBean (4.1) and KitKat (4.4) ROMs for the OB (Nameless, among others); expect more charging time and features/functions that don't work.
I appreciate what the developers are doing with the P970, and many users enjoy "bleeding edge" updates. But at the end of the day, I value stability over everything else; the P970 with GB "works".

I just want a more stable and less problematic os. My gf's Xperia arc with a single core runs better... lol
Many folks have different setups they have reached via trial and error. As per my findings most stable setup is Miui + Owains Tweak Pack.
Miui on its own is a little slow and laggy, with owains tweak pack it gets upto speed and then adds cool things like voodoo sound and google talk video. Currently I am on miui 1.10.28 and I will be upgrading to new miui with new tweak pack next week.
The only issue you will face is the phone will say that you have to turn on data roaming. It shows up as rogers wireless and I have been running it like this for a month and have not incurred any extra charges. So its fine as far as I'm concerned.
This same issue is also in Cyanogenmod (miui uses cyanogenmod code). Cm7 is very good but takes A LOT of tinkering to get to a decent state and also I got horrible battery life with it. Thats why I moved to miui and then discovered this wonderful forum with people like fajarep and higsy and owain94 who are doing custom things for my phone.
Fido has release the GB update through the LG Support Tool.
The only bad thing for me was that the Support Tool can't detect my firmware version after the update. Oh well, I'll deal with that if the roll out the ICS update for us

Not fair. The LG Update tool is not working for me it says I'm at the latest firmware. Im on 2.2.2. I'm on Fido aswell and I can't get it to work. I'm calling Fido on monday I'm so upset. The 2.2.2 is so buggy and has screen unresponsiveness issues. (many froyo roms do)
Same thing here
I am having the same issue. What's the deal here. It says phone is already latest , no need to update. But my firmware is still listed as being 2.2.2 Althugh few months ago when I checked using the tool it said there was an update required and it actually did flash my phone . Afterwards I noticed my " version #" had changed to v21b . However to my dismay, the firmware version remained unchanged at 2.2.2. What's up . Is this what people mean when I read references to " fake gingerbread" In relation to Optimus x2 updates??
Sigh, the crazy part is I recently heard a statement from LG saying that the x2 was one of the phones that has been slated for an ICS 4.0 update! huh? One empty promise at a time please ,LG
Thanks to anyone who can clarify .

I was in the same sinking boat as you are now. I have the O2X while i ot my gf the Xperia. I haven't rooted her phone, but mine was done a day or two after i got it.
I tried using the LG tool to update, and gave up. Way too so for my taste.
So i turned to CM7 and followed it religiously, till i turned pagan to my new lord(till ICS comes out officially), Temasek.
Im currently running Temasek's nightly Kang, 66 i believe. I had tried CM7's #218 nightly, but wasn't crazy about it. Didn't seem as stream lined as Tamasek's.
Just tried the ported version of ICS from Ricardo Cerqueira, very nice introduction. But i myself had too many issues with it, maybe should have done a full wipe, swipe and dump before installing it.
But all in all L1qu1d, don't be scared to root.... you won't regret it.
And good old nightly or kang can work wonders...
I think the only thing that concerns people about rooting is that they may not be able to get the official ICS update WHEN they finally decide to release it. Obviously you can revert/deroot etc and then you should be fine.. but still... lol. nerves.
LOL
i even forgot that there is such thing as lg tool.
Hey XDA
My friend is just a casual person who dont know anything about smartphones/especially not roms/kernels.
He've an o2x and have several problems with it.
The stock rom is slow(havent tried 2.3 though, since it isnt possible to root then) and his currently ROM, CM7, isnt too stable - he keep loosing internet connection, the flash app crashes, and several FCs(and yeah, I've tried reinstalling and fix permissions and stuff like that)
So atm I am looking for a good and completely stable ROM for his o2x, since he is tired of all the problems.
What can you suggest? - Is the new 2.3 worth it, or is there a better rom? - I have to mention, his CM7 rom is 1 month old, so it isnt up-to-date.
I am personally using SGSII so I dont know anything at all about O2X, so I have to ask you guys.
Thanks in advance!
Well, I think that if you wanna go custom, you must be in the touch with updates.
There is pretty good custom rom`s and kernel out there, but if you just want to install and forget (no backuping, flashing, restoring...), I would go with stock rom, 2.3. is ok.
Everyone have their favorite, mine is: stock 20L, rooted, with custom Spica`s HP Kernel and Performance Pack and there is no problems with phone and Spica gives boost to stock rom.
There is some interesting poll too http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350761

As I said, I dont know much about o2x, since it is not my phone, but is there any problems with 2.3? Is it faster than 2.2 and have they fix'ed all the FC he got with 2.2?
The problem is that, if I unroot and update to 2.3 I can't get back, so therefore I want to be 100% sure.
I know I have to keep it updated, and I will do that, just not 100% updated all the time. But if the rom and kernel is stable, its no big deal.
Thank you for your answer, I will wait to decide after a few more replies
edit: thx for the link, I will check it out asap!
It looks like CM7 is the right choice though...Maybe I should just update it and see if it fix his problems?
CM7 is the only one what I have not tried from the list, lol.
What do you think that you can`t go back? You can do with your phone everything you want . You can go to 2.3 then flash back to 2.2. Rooting is not a problem, there is very good guide how to do that, if you have a backup to flash. And there are all versions of stock roms to download.

Well I've seen several people talking about that you can't root the 2.3 firmware.
Yeah you can downgrade ofc, forgot that. I downgraded a Desire Z, which was srsly tough. I guess it is hard to do with o2x too? (maybe a link to guide )

Other suggestions to stable roms/kernels?
I think the best way is that you try some roms by yourself. When you have done this one time its very easy and next time you can do it much faster. I'm testing GR5 at the moment. Its realesed today for everybody.
---------- Post added at 11:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:48 PM ----------
And if you are not satisfied with performance you can flash a new kernel like spica's.

i installed miui yesterday it seems pretty good n way faster than the stock froyo
couldnt test the stock 2.3 as it wasnt available yet when i last checked for updates
I have tested probably every rom on this forum and in my opinion CM 7.1 stable is the best choice. Since yesterday i'm testing miui 1.11.18 and it seems to be very good as well. No freezes and bsods so far. But miui is based on CM so it has to be good With the SwiftExtreme kernel it's really fast. Battery is also good on both of them - much better then stock 2.3.

I would advice you to wait for official release mate
Right now there are couple of very good ICS ROMs but there is also a risk of bricking your note because ICS leaks kernel are somewhat faulty
Better safe than sorry

I agree. Hearing all the issues, not even about bricking frightens me. Although for those who have successfully installed ICS on the Note, I do envy you because stock android looks amazing! However, once official ICS is released by Samsung devs would prefect stock ICS I bet. =P
I have just come back to stock after using ICS ROMS.
I encountered a lot of problems such as:
not being able to transfer files from pc to note.(i had to take out SD card and use an adapter).
Phones rebooting randomly alot.
When trying to flash in recovery, the flashing procedure kept on freezing.
I think it is safe to stay on stock, where you will be problem free until official ICS release.

I've never had any of these problems that you mention. I don't think most users have either.
Can't transfer files? USB storage is now native to most ICS ROMS.
Random rebooting? Sounds like a personal problem to me.
Flashing in recovery and freezing? Okay, yeah that's a common problem...but it's an easily fixed problem, and it mainly comes about because you don't have proper root to begin with.
There's also some evidence recently that a few ICS kernels can cause permanent emmc (internal storage) failure that can not be revived. So yes, you probably shouldn't be flashing ROMS to begin with, as it sounds like you don't have much experience. This would put you in over your head for sure. It's best to wait until you've lurked around the boards for a bit and to wait for a stable and official ICS base to come out. Best of luck!

Hello fellow earthlings!
My friend has a SGS, and it is still running the stock froyo 2.2.1. It is not rooted nor has any history of hacking. She asked me to update her phone to CM10. Can anybody tell me where to start and what to do? Any links? Or are CM10 roms stable already?
I would be grateful for anyone willing to help me.
Are you sure that's a good idea? Despite what everyone might tell you CM10 isn't exactly stable yet. If you update it for her she might have to rely on you to fix her problems all the time since she didn't learn how to update it herself.

Well, this might be a reason to do the upgrade
My experience:
I had a 2.3.6 stock GB. It was very good but sometimes I noticed problems (lagging, app force closes, etc.). Not much, but I got annoyed and secondly I wanted to know what is all the hype around the CM. So I flashed CM9. Very nice, smooth, same battery life, but missing some of the applications, TouchWiz and got some errors as well (see this). I do not have much time (and experience either) to flash every day and I want a stable system, so I will not go for CM10 for some time.
Was it a good idea after all? Yes and no. I had to reinstall everything (CM9 uses different file system, some apps do not remember its settings, etc.), had to look for a new launcher (a word I did not know existed ) had to sort out birth illnesses. On the other hand I received a new system, a new experience and I know that if I would perform a system change it will be an upgrade to CM10, not a downgrade. Possibly I might do even a sidegrade - switching to a different developer. But obviously I will stick with the most known brands (AOKP, MIUI).
Hope I helped you.

you should and must update it to the latest firmware for your phone , which is gingerbread 2.3.6
so you have two options....
1) use KIES and let it do the job for you
2) use Odin3 and flash the latest Gingerbread ROM for your region from here or here
you must have this for any upgrade...so do this first and and see, how it suits you or her
Well i bought this phone last week and i have to say that its very easy to handle and fast, but i didnt updated my firmware yet(im on 2.2.2) .
My doubt is if there are best stock fw available or is it better to wait for the ICS. :\
Other thing, lately im having some problems with receiving calls, like my friends tell me that they have called me but i didnt receive any call or notice
If anyone knows how to help me please reply, because i really like this phone and dont want to change it.
Thanks,
You're still on the software the phone had out of the box? This is why you are having these problems. If you wish a more hassle free experience updating go for the gingerbread update through the LG software. If you are prepared to do a LOT, I repeat a LOT of reading, flash a CM7 release and then a CM10 one. Then you will have Android 4.1.2
I think that the available LG update is, well, honest. I would use it waiting for CM10 to mature a bit, I would not waste time on CM7/9 stuff even if CM7 has some really good variations (as stock itself by the way)

The thing is that there is no "official" ICS yet... What we have is the current development version, which has not yet been released. If you read the corresponding threads, you will see very mixed reviews from different people -- some are reporting bugs, and some are very happy with the way it works. For me personally, the V28g works perfectly, and I am currently using it as my daily ROM. You can give it a try, if you'd like.
However, if you prefer to stick with GB for now (until the ICS is officially released), there are some excellent stock-based varieties available here on XDA. You can choose between the latest versions from Flix123, Carburano (Django Manouche ROM), or Stefan Gundhor (Gueste "Goodbye" ROM), to name a few. All of them are very good and stable ROMs based on V20s, with a bunch of nice customizations and tweaks compared to the plain stock.
