And don't relock your bootloader. It is not necessary to take the OTA.

I flashed stock 5.1 on my Nexus 7 the other night so should it be able to get OTA now?
I am currently in 5.1 for my Nexus 6 so should I just re flash 5.1 again to remove root and re-enable OTA?
Thanks for your help guys and I will not lock seeing as its not necessary.

"Removing" root via SuperSU app is insufficient. You will need to fastboot flash the system.img. If you have a modified kernel, you will have to fastboot flash the stock boot.img

Hello everyone, I'm new here, my nexus 6 is on stock 5.0.1 and waiting for update to 5.1, here are my concerns.
1. How can I root my phone without unlock boot loader or flash a twrp recovery( I Know if I got a twrp recovery, I can not get OTA).
2. If I need unlock boot loader in order to root, could this affect ota?
3. If I rooted my phone, can I get ota in the future?
Thanks.

Thanks. So this means if I want to root my phone, I will have to unlock boot loader. And is there anything I can do if I want to update through OTA after I rooted and unlocked my phone?

As long as you flash the stock recovery before an ota you'll be fine
Actually any system modification including root on Lollipop will prevent an OTA so in answer to question 3, no.
Basically need to flash stock system.img, recovery.img and stock boot (if you changed the kernel).
At least thats what I'm about to do.

Correct. That's exactly what I did, and it worked.

Weird as I took the OTA while rooted.
Still working on it on my end. Drivers aren't installed for add sideboard trying to figure it out
Hi guys !
I unlocked my bootloader and rooted my device, and i don't know if i can upgrade my Nexus 6 by ota (received this morning on the phone) without brick it.
Is it dangerous?
Thank you
EDIT : I'm on stock Lollipop 5.0.1
Unlocked is fine. If you have root or any other system mods, you'll need to remove them.
Oh thanks for the quick answer
So if I unroot it with Nexus Root Toolkit it will be ok?

Nexus toolkit doesn't unroot. It reflashes the entire phone which also means root disappears. If you're going to do that, no point taking the ota. Just flash full update.
You can indoor via the SuperSU app.
Oh ok I just saw that.
So if I unroot via SuperSU it's ok i can install?

As long as you do the full unroot and made no other modifications. Oh and everything must be 100% stock, including recovery
I've installed TWRP...
So, what is the best way for me to install 5.1 without losing my data?

download the factory image that you want to update to.
extract the system.img, boot.img and radio.img
Fastboot flash them.
You could also flash the bootloader if you want though I dont see any point.
Ok, thank you for your quick answers
When I bought my Nexus 6 I unlocked and rooted the phone with CF-Auto-Root. There is a new OTA rolling out for T-Mobile, can I take the OTA or will I need to do something to get rid of root? I running stock unlocked and rooted no mods. Thanks for any help in advance!!

No. To apply the OTA file, you need to be completely stock. No custom recovery, no root. Bootkoader being unlocked is OK, but nothing else.
You can flash factory images to get back to stock and then take OTA, or wait for new image to be published and flash that directly (you can preserve data)

No.
If you are on LMY47M you should:
- fastboot erase system
- fastboot flash system system.img
- perform a data factory reset in recovery
-Reboot
- adb sideload the OTA in stock recovery.
In the first item of my sig are all the available OTA`s, If you have a custom kernel/recovery flash the boot/recovery.img as well off course.
OR:
- Flash TWRP
- Flash the 28E rom.zip from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/development/fxz-nexus-6-recovery-flashable-fastboot-t3066052 with TWRP.

system.img is currently not available for LMY47M, so op will need to go back to LRX22C images, and then, take OTA from there.
The second option you mentioned is the quicker one

Hi everyone,
I know there is a lot of answers on this forum but it's difficult to find exactly what I ask.
My (european) Moto X 2014 (XT1092) is still in Android 4.4 rooted, with unlocked bootloader and no recovery.
I would like to update to Lollipop 5.1, be rooted and with Xposed installed. I don't want to brick my phone, and I would like some advices on how to do that, what are the steps ?
Thanks
If you haven't already update to 5.0 you could flash 4.4.4/5.0 and then OTA to 5.1

Do I have to unroot my phone before flashing or something like that?

Ok thank's ! By backup you mean manually or use an app to entirely backup the system and data ?
Do I have to root the phone on 5.0 and then update to 5.1 ?
You can fastboot boot twrp and make a backup, just to be safe,it's not mandatory. Flash 5.0 and then check for update.

just flash the latest 6.0.1 factory image. yes, you will lose root and will have to reroot(flash twrp then supersu which takes a few minutes). bootloader will only relock if you relock yourself, manually. if by now you dont know the proper steps, and yet you are modifying your nexus 6, then there is no help for you, sorry.

flashing a factody image will wipe out your partitions first, so affectively, youre flaahing on top of an "empty" device. you will lose data, but wont if you only flash the system.img.

Sorry to butt in but only flashing userdata.img in fastboot or performing a manual data factory reset (in recovery or settings) will wipe all data on your device.

Sure, but only backup userdata (apps) and no system data.
