[Q] Need to hotspot from unlocked, rooted Galaxy S4 Active

Hi. I have an AT&T Galaxy S4 Active which was (supposedly) factory unlocked. It does accept another SIM so I know it was at least partially unlocked. I have also rooted the phone thanks to your help here. (Big thanks for that!!!) But I would like to be able to use the phone as a hotspot and can't seem to get it to perform. I get an error message that there is a network error please try again later. It occurred to me that this might be due to the AT&T APN still being listed as "default", although I have entered my carrier's APN info.
Is there a way to remove the AT&T APN? Or, alternatively, does anyone have another trick I might use? Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Is your phone sgh-i537 ?
We have several of those and all are unlocked. They arrived (large shipment) from vendor, all rooted with a locked down android 4.3 (ML2) and mobile hotspot would not work......system update would not work....
Here's what I finally did:
1. Installed Odin 3.09
2. Downloaded full image (1.2 GB) for ATT ML2 (Android 4.3)
3. Reflashed over *existing* ML2 the official ML2 which killed root and any other customizations (desired!)
4. At this point, connected to ATT System Update, it found automatically the 444 MB update to Android 4.4.2
5. Rooted with towelroot.com
6. Hotspot works now fine on all of them.
Mine is an i537 and I`m in almost the same boat. I can not enable a wifi hotspot. My phone was originally branded AT&T but I am running it on Wind which uses AWS frequency like TMobile. My phone is rooted with towel and the radio file has been modified for AWS.
Can I do what xdafly said but still modify the radio file for AWS? How about the 444mb update from AT&T? Can I update that way even tho I'm using a sim from another provider? Is there a file I can download with the same update in it?
Unable to comment on the radio file but perhaps someone else has more details on that and will post.
However, as to your question on the 444 MB update, I also tried on a few of our i537 the download links found in the ATT Stock Firmware thread
As you will discover there, if you have an unmodified ML2 (Android 4.2) or WISH TO make it so, you can install Odin (links are there) and you can download the ML2 image (links are there) and THEN you can download the 444 MB file, place it on a microSD card, drop into Stock Recovery and select the (renamed) update.zip and your ML2 will now be NE3 (Android 4.4.2).
At this point you have the official ATT i537 firmware and you can root with towelroot.com and make any other desired changes.

I537UCUBML2 (4.3) Released 2014-01-07 is the right ML2 to use? It is the 1.2GB Oden file. Sorry for such a simple question. I'm pretty new to this and don't want to use the wrong file and brick my phone.

Yes, that is the one for i537. The 1.2 gb download will contain 4 parts and you will need to find Odin (easy to find as there are many filehosts). Read the discussion threads to alleviate any concerns but it is simply a matter of opening the archive somewhere on your system, installing Odin and then just inside Odin open and point each of the 4 parts, reboot your phone to Downloading....mode (Vol Down, Power, Home) and connecting USB cable....
Thanks xdafly! I'm gonna download a couple of big files and do some reading till my eyes bleed!
I have an i537 running 4.4.2 (NE3) with the MF1 baseband (to be useable on AWS) and I still have the same issues with WiFi tethering (hotspot) that I had on ML2.
@xdafly your suggestion of 4.4.2, was that to help hotspot run while using non-ATT SIM cards? If so, am I missing a step? (I am currently not rooted, how does that help in this case?)

Stock Tar

Anyone here have the capability to create a TMobile stock Tar to flash via odin. Made the mistake of using root explorer to delete knox files and now it won't boot up past the Colorful Samsung. I know a simple re-odin of a stock tar will fix the issue. I was rooted with no problems and decided to mess with root explorer to delete knox files. BIG mistake. I know eventually recoveries as well as posted stock tar will be out there, but if anyone here can create that stock tar or point me to a web site that has one, would be much appreciated. Edge model ,BTW.
Edit: Called Tmob. Support. Passed me on to Samsung Support. They could tell I rooted the phone which didn't bother me. They would not give out firmware saying it was proprietary. Anyways, they said bring phone to TMobile store that HAS ABILITY to reflash phone with stock firmware. Word of warning......Samsung stated they placed high value on their knox security stuff and any file deletion of knox support files would render phone unbootable, so word of warning to others, wait for developers to figure out safe way of removing knox junk. Still have my Trusty S5 that I reactivated SIM chip to use. Going to edit other thread I posted this on.

G920AUCU2AOF3 to OF4 FlashFire Update for Root Users

99% of this is copied and pasted from designgears's post for his great job on the FlashFire OF3 update.
OE2 to OF3 by designgear: http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-galaxy-s6/general/g920aucu2aof3-flashfire-update-t3156221
G920AUCU2AOF3 -> G920AUCU2AOF4 Updater (for users rooted since OE2 PingPong root)
This is a modified version of the official OTA.
Upgrade from OF3 to OF4
Retains Root
Retains OE2 Bootloader
Retains OE2 Recovery
All checks removed (deleted, modified system files won't be patched, but it won't break the entire patching process)
If you unroot while on OF4 you will have to downgrade to OE2 kernel with Odin and use PingPong root.
Edited files WILL NOT be updated, they're skipped instead of breaking the entire update process like the stock OTA. If you want to update those files they need to be returned to stock OE2.
This has been verified to not trip the KNOX warranty bit.
Download and unzip "S6-OF3 to OF4 Update.7z," extract G920AUCU2AOF3-OF4.zip to your sdcard.
In Flashfire select "Flash ZIP or OTA"
Select G920AUCU2AOF3-OF4.zip from your sdcard
Change the reboot option to download mode.
Leave all other settings default and flash.
After it has flashed, reboot to download mode (if not done via FlashFire, press and hold home, power, and volume down) and use Odin to flash the updated kernel and modem.
In Odin put boot.tar.md5 in the AP slot.
Put modem.tar.md5 in the CP slot.
Leave all other settings alone and click start.
Once the phone has rebooted you should be on OF4.

Sadly, no. Edge's latest build number is G925AUCU2AOF4 and Active is G890AUCU2AOF4.
If anyone can provide me me the OTA zip (located /cache/fota/XXX.cfg) as well as the modem.bin and boot.img from OF3 (likely provided in any of the FlashFire modified updates released, if not will need the latest Odin images plus any OTA updates since to patch to OF4), I can modify the OTA and patch the images for you guys.

Thanks wesgarner! I've linked the forum where the S6 edge OF3 odin files. Hope this is what you are talking about.

That'll do. If you can grab the OTA (have the instructions above), I'll modify and patch everything up for you. The process is pretty simple, but keep in mind I don't have a device to test it on before posting.

Just looked, and it appears that the S6 Active was never susceptible to PingPong exploit.
That means to get root on the Active would require tripping the KNOX warranty bit (until another viable exploit is found).
If you've already done that and just want the OTA update, I can do that!
Just a dumb question but I thought I saw somewhere DG mentioned something along the lines of loading the OE2 kernel for the active, is that possible with the new boot loader to obtain root for the Active folks? Sorry don't mean to high jack the thread. (Personally don't care if knox is tripped)
Flashed on S6 , working good thxs
Two questions
Thank you so much for this! I have two questions: 1. Will this work with a deodexed rom and 2. If I reflash OE2 firmware with Odin, will my s6 be completely downgraded to OE2?

Just FYI: I'm on Cleanrom 1.1 and had done the flashfire update to OF3. I used this to update to OF4 without a problem, but I'm still showing to be vulnerable to the stagefright exploit. Any reason why the update wouldn't have patched that? It shows that I'm on OF4 on the device.

Google wasn't able to patch all of the CVE stagefright exploits in the first round. Some more have appeared.
Check out this article that explains it all: http://phandroid.com/2015/08/17/psa-your-android-phone-may-still-have-stagefright-vulnerability-even-if-it-was-patched/
I'm sure OF5 will come out soon enough to resolve this.

Ok, cool. Just send me the OTA zip plus the Odin files leading up to the OTA, and we will be good to go. I have the Edge one prepped (already extracted the boot.img and modem.bin from the Oden files) so just waiting on the OTA there.

No, this won't work with a deodexed ROM as this patches odex files amongst others. It's meant for only original ROMs and OTAs as it is simply a modification to the original OTA.
If your recovery and bootloader are still at OE2, then yes it will be completely downgraded to OE2. In that case, use designgear's OE2 to OF3 update then this update to go to OF4.

Sadly, not possible... Sorry!
Can somebody please post a pic of their "about phone" page? I want to compare my kernel, modem etc to someone who has flashed this.

Update past OE2 and keep root possible? ATT S6 can...

It seems like it is possible to update from the OE2 update to OF3 and still keep root on the ATT Galaxy S6, so I think it'd be possible to do the same for ATT Edge.
See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-galaxy-s6/general/g920aucu2aof3-flashfire-update-t3156221
Can anyone with more knowledge and expertise of the subject see if it's possible with our Edge devices?
I also found an S6 thread that showed success updating from OF3 to OF4 (i believe OF4 has that stagefright fix) while still keeping root.
See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...920aucu2aof3-to-of4-flashfire-update-t3181135
I'm fairly certain it's possible, just don't have the knowledge to do it myself. I'm sure a lot of Edge users are not updating past OE2 because they want to keep root since you can't downgrade back to OE2.
Thanks for your input in advance!

Tethered Root ATT S6 OTA upgraded to 6.0.1 build G920AUCS5DPK3 help please

After searching this forum I was unable to confirm if a tethered ODIN method will root a 6.0.1 updated S6. Can anyone confirm and direct me to the location of the flash file needed for this build?

None that I'm aware of. This is the tethered root for 5.1.1, and likely where a MM version will show up, if it does. TBH I wouldn't hold out hope - I suspect most of the folks who were working on this device have moved on. I certainly don't blame them.
