Stock update and rooy - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

Will installing the stock update kill root, or worse yet brick my phone?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3076803

Can I let the phone do the update on its own with no problems?

If you take the ota you won't be able to root. If you want to root use the thread i posted

Go to the thread i posted and read in the notes section. Download the nce file and flash in odin. This will put you phone back to factory settings. Then you should be able to take the ota. If you take the ota you won't be able to root. If you want root on lollipop then follow the instructions in that same op and it'll tell you how to get to rooted Lollipop.

Rooting will stop official updates?

This may have been asked before, but I couldn't find a proper answer on XDA forums. So here it is:
Will you still be able to download and install official updates in your Note without a hitch even if you've rooted it?
Is voiding the warranty the only problem with rooting?

yes to your questions. getting it OTA is another matter especially if you installed a custom rom.
and of course, you risk bricking your device once you tinker with it. but if you follow the instructions, especially Dr. Ketan's guide, your chances of success goes up dramatically.
That's a relief. If I don't install a custom rom I'll be able to upgrade OTA, right?
And where can I find this Dr Ketan's guide?

Of course you will get OTA / Kies update after Root, but again bad part is that, you will lose Root after OTA/Kies. So If you want to keep your Root intact, you should not update it with OTA/Kies but you can just use as Notice, when you get notice about new update, find it over XDA (this thread is for stock ROMs) n update it using Mobile Odin/ CWM
Chasmodo have shown you exact thread for rooting guide in detail, here ofline guide i have made too, download it from last link on my signature.

So, in case of the OTA update a rooted device will get "unrooted", right? Will that leave the phone in the same state as it would have been in if the rooting never happened, i.e. if you were just doing the OTA updates only all along?..
Yes it will lead to state of unrooted, M not sure but it may leave superuser application icon on drawer(non functioning). If it remains you have to Flash ROM with PC Odin to get rid of this.

I think yes, only not sure about the "flash counter" that I've heard on these forums. It may be an indicator of you voiding your warranty.
EDIT: got my self interested, did a quick search and found more info on this thread. After doing the update and going into download mode you should be able to see if your flash counter is alright

I think some OTA updates leave the rooting intact and one has to specifically "unroot".

Thanks. So I guess things will be the same if one flashes back the original ROM and resets the binary flash counter. Please do correct me if I'm wrong.
Flash counter raise when you flash custom rom with pc Odin.
Reflash stick rom won't reset it, u need 'jig' to reset it.
Ics support a sw which reset counter without jig.

Ahh no wonder... I am on N7000OZSKK1 and was notified about a 70~mb update both OTA and via Kies to N7000OZSLA2 but no matter what I did it would cause an error during updating. I guess I'll just wait for a "rootable" update (and plus I can't seem to find a changelog either...)

Don't know the entire situation, but if you have a custom recovery, then need to revert to stock. If stock recovery and just root, then update, root should be held over update. After update, then install custom recovery.

If it's the update to go from 24a to 26a, then do the update. Root should persist (it has for me, I've done it twice now). I haven't seen anything in the way of performance improvement, but the persistent "update now" pop-up is annoying.

[Q] Upgrade to 5.0.1

Hey guys,
Even after reading tons of threads, I cant seem to manually sideload an update for 5.0.1.
I just got this Nexus 6, but have been a long time user since Nexus 4.
What is the easiest way to upgrade to 5.0.1 without loosing all my data? Thanks again!
So you're stock unrooted? What happens when you sideload? Please give more info
Ive already tried to download the patch but cant seem to apply, even following a few guides.....

I am stock, rooted, unlocked. I tried to manually sideload with no success. I also tried the nexus toolbox. I get all the way to the end, and it looses ADB connection
@RoysGTI
If you are rooted, you will not be able to side load the update. And "unroot" will still leave some files which will prevent it from installing.
You need to extract the system.img from 5.0.0 and fastboot flash it. This will leave your user data intact. Then after flashing the update, you will have to reroot.
I assume you are still encrypted?

You need to take a step back and do some reading and studying before doing anything else with your phone. You don't want to risk doing something wrong and bricking your device. Read and study these tutorials before proceeding further. Make sure you thoroughly understand everything, before proceeding. And don't hesitate to ask questions in those respective threads.

Once I root again, will I have to do this same process for every OTA update?

[Q] Unable to download any new software updates

Whenever I used to try to update my phone from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4, my phone would say the installation was interrupted, and kies would say my firmware is up to date. At the time I didnt care much, but now that 5.0 is out, I want to figure this out. When I got my phone in September I flashed the original software to root, then reflashed 4.4.2. Since then I unrooted and restores my phone to try and resolve the problem, but neither have helped. Does anyone know a solution? If any more information is needed I can definitely provide it.

Last questions are how to go into stock recovery and once I do that its all normal again?
How to boot Samsung Galaxy S5 Recovery Mode:
Power off your device completely.
Boot recovery mode by pressing and holding Volume Up, Home and Power, all at the same time.
Release all buttons when the Galaxy S5 screen flickers and the main Recovery screen will appear.
Once I updated to ng3 through the stock recovery I was able to take the ota updates for 4.4.4 and 5.0 normally.
Thanks, I'm going to try this now. Hope I don't lose any data!

Hi there. Thank you so much for this. Question is that I am already on NG3 and I still dont have the update option! Would I need to go to OA1 one? Which I believe is 4.4.4? Then get the update for lollipop? A little confusion. And if that is the case, where can I get the file thing for OA1?

It should not delete your data. The only thing that would do that would be to use Odin to flash back to NE3, which I don't think is necessary. If you stay on 4.4.2, the Android Police will arrest you and throw you in a dungeon cell with only outdated Apple products to pass your time. Lol jk sorry it's perfectly fine to stay on 4.4.2 you'll just have to find a way to disable the OTA app (can always uninstall it with Titanium Backup, that's what I've done in the past).

I used the keeproot method myself, it is simple enough as long as you follow and understand the instructions. OC6 does not have any problems that I am aware of. You can always be rooted (that is do the keeproot method) and then just not do anything with root once on OC6. More generally speaking it is perfectly possible (maybe even somewhat normal) to be rooted and not do anything about it. Root really is only giving yourself complete access to the file system/OS, you don't actually have to do anything with it. And I'm pretty sure once you're on OC6 you could just unroot. Point being, while you need root to get to OC6 manually, once on OC6, you have plenty of choices if you really don't want to be rooted.
Always pleased to help when I can. And you've already repaid me by hitting the thanks button :good:
