[Q] Water damage + broken screen Nexus 6 - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone.
I hope that you are enjoying using your phone
Recently, 1st the water have reached my phone. Fortunately, the phone is still working perfectly. After maybe 2 hours of the water accident it start pressing "power button" automatically and then restarting several times. It run out of battery then I've tried to turn it on using "Power button" it was not working. Any way, somehow it turned ON !!. Therefore, I've installed an app to use volume up instead of the power button.
However, 2nd thing it fall down and I got the screen broken, the phone still working but after that, it run out of battery and it has never back live again. nothing appears if I click volume up or down not even the battery logo.
What I notice is that, for the first time I've seen the green led lamp notification in my Nexus 6. Find attached a picture.

First of all, the worst thing you can do after water damage, is to turn the phone on. I strongly suggest turning it off, and taking it to a repair center immediately. It needs to be placed in a dehydration oven and then inspected and cleaned by a tech. Water damage is serious and the effects can continue to arise after the initial penetration. Circuits can continue to short out and corrosion will form unless properly cleaned.

Most likely, however, after rereading your post, the phone is already fried and you would need a new motherboard or complete replacement.

Best thing to do with water damage is to turn off the phone ASAP and let the phone dry in a bowl of uncooked rice for about 2 days.

i tried that its not working, i cant get into bootloader, i have two tilts one that works fine and this one, i can get into bootload on mine but the problem one doesnt get into it, it just shows the att screen and starts up. The hard reset by pressing the soft keys and soft reset doesnt work either
You bought a faulty unit and the buttons are dead?
not knowing, you accidently bought a stolen unit and it is well secured by the former owner? (not just MS)
Hmmmm you cant hard reset? Either your buttons arent working, your phone has a bad block, or you are not performing the hard reset correctly. Hard reset is a base operation of the phone controlled by SPL if im not mistaken. Hey guys... is it also possible his NAND could be corrupt?
Also, just in case, to perform a hard reset, the correct buttons to hold in are these ( Highlighted by a red dot on each ):

Make sure to hold them in tightly as you soft reset
yeap ive been doing that it just starts up normally, its weird, i found a few weird things.
When starting up if you plug in the usb cable it will freeze at the att screen.
when i get into the home screen 15 reminders go off and the annoying att song plays over and over but i can get glimpses of the old owners stuff and then goes to the sim lock screen. If i plug in the usb at this time everything will freeze but itll still play the att song and vibrate and it then shut off after 10 seconds.

[Q] HTC HD2 will not Boot at all

Hello... My HTC HD2 refuse to come back on (Boot) . It happened when i was charging the phone the thunder storm strike and the light (power) in my house went off .....
When i woke up that morning the screen was frozen i tried reset and it refuse to boot at all... I have sent it to repairs and they tried flashing ..it wouldn't work ..
Help me please .. I beg you..
what might be the problem ???
Thank you
The problem is probably due to several thousand volts being applied when the phone was only expecting 4.2v, it is best to unplug any electronics during an electrical storm.

I know .. but now my HTC HD2 will not boot up and i don't know what to do
Why is this in accessories?
Basically, I'd say your battery is dead due to the high voltage going in to. Try get a replacement battery and see if that works.

I did try the Battery on my other HTC HD2 phone and it worked perfectly .....
I don't know why this is doing that .. I will try buying a new battery to see ... but if there is more options to try .. I would be very Glad ..
I put this info in accessories because i have a feeling it is not a software problem but a hardware problem ...
thank you for your help
Oh.The phone might just be burnt inside. You could try putting it in a fridge for a few minutes and see if that helps. If you're going to do that, make sure you put it in a plastic bag to keep all moisture out and affecting the phone.
Posting this in GENERAL might get you more help.
Posting this in Accessories is like going to a Toyota Forum and asking about engine problems in the Audio section.

it say " The divice is unable to boot because either you have turned off the device incorrectly or tired to install an application from Untrusted Source...Press Volume Up to reset your device or Press cancel"
I have been holding volume up for more than 5 mins and still that black screen with this writing is still not resetting
HELP ME ONCE MORE
thank you
Turn off phone, Hold Volume Up and press Boot while keep holding.
Then follow the instruction .
You're going to have to get a new one. There is no trick or button combination to unfry a circuit board, battery or screen. When an intricate electronic device takes a surge, it generally produces enough heat to destroy all the things that make the phone a phone instead of a shiny plastic box. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm pretty sure that's what boomboomer was telling you.

reconsider you advice
Can you put the phone in bootloader? If the bootloader works you can try to flash a rom from sd card (if you have hspl as well). Maybe it'll work.

Well if you get that on the screen why not pull out the battery or better still press the reset button behind the cover. Quickly hold down the volume down key and release when you see the red blue green screen (if you can get to this screen).
Tells us what happens.
You can also try holding both volume up and down keys down and at the same time push the power button. See if you get a reset screen.

Send it to HTC for repair, or claim on insurance.
The phone is fried, it is damaged, it is physically kaput.
like xaccers said, send it 2 htc. as long as the phone is under a year old they should repair it for free. I have sent my phone into htc for repair and was very pleased bc it didnt cost anything & they shipped it back free. i only had to cover shipping there. when you call they'll ask for the imei # to see about any remaining warranty and they will not do any repairs on the phone if it does cost $ without contacting you to talk about what the repairs will cost if any.

Oden root brick

I was using the Oden one click gingerbread method and I did the first part and it flashed fine but when it rebooted it went to a charging icon, not the fugumod icon. So, like a moron I pulled the cord since I could not restart it like the tut said. I then booted it up and it went into the fugumod screen. So I tried the 3 button technique and it did not work, it goes to a charging screen. Now I can't get to recovery or Oden to recognize it, so I can't flash it back to stock. Am I really bricked? I can get to the Fugumod screen like the Oden tut said, so is there any way to get Oden to recognize it without the 3 button to get it to download mode? Please help, this is my Mom's phone, I flashed it due to her wifi not working and she needs it soon. Much appreciated.
I forgot to mention, the phone is not detected by my PC. I've used 3 different wires, oem, htc, and a blackberry and it doesn't show up in adb at all.
Looks like you have the button combination locked, try to build a jig, here is how u can do it (worked for me) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841512.
Did u try with vol - and power or vol+ and power? Also u can try removing the battery, plug the usb connected to the pc with odin open, hold vol - and vol + and insert the battery.
Yeah, I tried every way I saw on here, Up+Power, Down+Power, Up+Down+Power, plug battery in while holding up+down, plug battery while holding up, down, and power, plug in wire while holding up, down, and only press power, etc. I'll give the jig a shot, hopefully that will work.

Should works, if you see signals of life jig must send you into download mode. Try to search how you can fix it just to be sure what are the steps that you must follow.
I tried making one from the instructions on here but the only response I got out of it was a charging screen for 2 seconds that disappeared, so I ended up buying one off of Amazon, it'll be here tomorrow and I'll let everyone know if it works or not. BTW, the title is sort of misleading, I am not blaming anyone for the brick, these things happen, I've been rooting phones since the G1, I know how it is.
Don't propagate ignorance... This is a "JIG"..

It has every JIG mode available..
What you're talking about is a 301kohm jig. Technically refered to as a 301kohm Factory Mode Boot JIG Boot On.
I just tried to help, sorry if i dont have the same technical experience than you.

Since there are 6 it should be distinguished. We've worked hard to gain knowledge and talking ignorant once you are in the know is not acceptable. You can also use the 619kohm jig to access download mode via UART.
A bit more on the "jig". JIG is a signal name. It is an "Output control signal driven by the FSA9280A/FSA9288A and used by the processor for factory test modes". There's several JIG modes.
Grab the "GalaxyS Hack Pack" and see the FSA9280 manual for more.
It's not really big issue for me, I'll call whatever the proper name is. It's just that 95% of the users here have called the 301kohm version a "Jig" since it was introduced months ago. Until everyone has adopted the new terms, maybe cut them some slack.
By the way, I haven't been following your work since I've no dev, but just read through some of it. Very nice.
Ok, so the Jig didn't work. It just showed a charging icon like when I used my own Jig. It doesn't boot to anything, it pops up with the battery and then dies. Is this a hard brick then?
EDIT: I unplugged the battery for 20 seconds and replugged the jig, and it sent to download mode. Thanks for the help everyone, and I hope this helps someone else if it happens to them.

3. plug in usb (while holding up+down)
4. plug in battery (continue holding )
and it brings me in download mood

Recovering Data from a Droid4 that won't boot

My droid4 won't get past the boot screen (red M).
It is stock, never rooted. Took it to VZW and the guy ripped the battery out WITHOUT unscrewing the two screws so not sure if it is creating a short.
I desperately need to recover my contacts and pictures. There was no google account on the phone.
Any ideas?

Data aside for a moment, I'd go back and get ahold of the guy's supervisor. There ought to be some sort of compensation in order following him physically damaging your device out of ignorance for how the battery is attached in certain Motorola devices.

power off, hold volume down button, power on, it should boot to AP Fastboot cable, if it says low battery
i would try charging it, if it doesn't show charging screen
try
Booting from AP fastboot to charging mode
If the Device will only boot to AP Fastboot and it says Battery Low
Connect the phone/Device ato a Wall Charger (not PC)
-In AP Fastboot Mode hold Volume down& power buttons at the same time for +10 seconds
- When screen goes black...release power button
-Then IMMEDIATELY press and hold Vol - and Vol+ to boot to Boot Menu.
- In Boot Menu scroll down with volume down to BP Tools, press volume up to select
- Device should boot to Charging Mode with battery icon
If Motorola Device will not boot to Charging Mode, a Fastboot cable will be needed.

HELP! I've hardbricked my mi 5 :(

Hi all
I have managed to hardbrick my phone without even trying to flash it.
I have a white 128gb Mi 5 with an unlocked bootloader and (i think) running Cyanogenmod13 (but it was such a long time ago that i installed it - before global stable was out) I've always been happy with it but kept meaning to sit down and put global on it, but havent gotten around to it.
Yesterday i was using my phone, put it in my handbag, took it out ten mins later and it was completely dead. But it was definitely at 100% charge at the time as i had it plugged in on the train. No leds, no response, no screen, not recognised by computer or anything.
There have been a few instances when i pulled my phone out of my bag and the fastboot screen has been up and luckily i've cancelled it. I've been doing a bit of research and i'm pretty sure that i somehow managed to enter fastboot mode in my bag by accident and then corrupt it somehow?
I've been playing about a bit with it. (it's still under warranty, but I can't send it back, because it's got an unofficial rom on it)
I've managed to get it to be recognised on my laptop now by following a video tutorial which i'm not able to post because this is my first post, but it's from choimobile,vn and just in case anyone wants to know which steps i've made it to, this is the rest of the address, /threads/unbrick-xiaomi-mi5-repair-boot-xiaomi-mi5-hardbrick-pc-not-detected.
But i've reached a point that i can't go any further. In all the guides i've read, people talk about the pc recognising the phone as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 but mine doesn't. It just recognises it as "android" so then flashing with miflash doesn't work.
Does anyone know what else i can do? I'm a noob at this so if you could keep the explanations simple, that would be great!
Thanks
Angelina
Forgot to add... phone still connects to my computer fine, i can still see everything and can access the internal memory.

I'm pretty sure you can't actually do any damage in fastboot without being connected to a PC.
You say your pc detects your phone storage fine so that means it's either booted or in recovery. Either way, you should have some kind of display being shown so it sounds like your screen is broken.
Do you know what recovery you have installed? I'd advise you try to reboot into it (power off -> hold power and volume up) or boot into fastboot and flash twrp recovery.
If your screen never changes from off after restarting, it's likely the screen that's the issue.

Hmm, OK that's strange, i've not done anything that would break it, especially in that short period of time. But I guess it could be a loose connection or something. Although that wouldn't explain why there are no leds or why it doesn't respond to being charged? if it was a broken screen, everything else would work fine.
I could only see it on my pc after taking it apart, disconnecting the battery and using tweezers to connect 2 points on the internal board like in the video above. If i disconnect it, then plug it in again, it's not recognised until i use the tweezers on the two points again.
I've tried to reboot it and get into fastboot again, but it definitely isn't responding.
Thanks
hmm have you tried plugging it to power source then hold power button like one min..?
because last week my phone was just dead, and doesn't respond to anything, though it's slightly different because mine stuck forever at 9008 mode, yet still stuck there even though i flashed new rom
the only cure to wake it up was to attach to charger then holding power button for one minute
or you can try using DFC cable to force into EDL mode
Hiya!
Yes i've tried various combinations of holding different buttons whilst fully charged/discharging/connecting to computer via the test point etc
Thanks for the suggestion though.
Unfortunately, the DFC cable won't work, as that is what i've done with the test point method. It will allow me to connect the phone to the computer but that's as far as it gets.
Bumping this in the hope that someone may have an answer.
Your phone was dead because your power button kept pressing accidentally for a long time as you kept it in your bag, i too have the same problem and I showed it in service center but no luck they suggested me to change the motherboard...
