Everything I read says that there are only 2 variants of the Nexus 6 - US and international, but then why do I see different ROMs per carrier? Can any update (not ROM) be flashed to an existing ROM ( I doubt this) - for example:
5.1.1 is rolling out. The TMO update that is available takes LMY47M to LYZ28E . LMY47M is not listed on the Google Dev site. Also, android sites show LMY47Z will bring 5.1.1 to Sprint (in a few days) - again no 5.1.1 variants are listed on Google dev site yet.
I have a Verizon branded 6 (dont ask why, but that is what i have) and it shipped with LMY47I.
So will all these 5.1.1 variants be posted? I would have thought that the latest version (highest number) would be best, but the Sprint line seems to be taking a different path.
Can anyone with more Nexus knowledge enlighten a Nexus noob? I am using this device on AT&T - if I put a Tmo SIM in, will i be on the TMO update train? Currently I am running without a SIM and using the Moto MAXX as my daily driver... I love the Moto Display better then the Google ambient display.
There are only 2 hardware versions, however some carriers are approving their own updates.. They actually seem to be based on what sim card you have in.
However, like you mentioned, updates look for a specific version to be installed on top of.
The carrier versions don't seem to come as factory images
you dont see any roms, per carrier, on any nexus device. open your eyes, read the rom ops.
also, this first update is only for the M 5.1 build to update to the new E build. other otas will f
follow in the coming weeks. and google will eventually post it to their factory image site.

So LMY47I isn`t a carrier specific build but for all unbranded devices?

I wonder how the phone would behave for users switching between a traditional CDMA and GSM carrier then... If you pull out your T-mo SIM and put in a Sprint SIM?
Looking forward to the day when there is a common technology like LTE...... in the US at least. when software specific to a carrier is not needed or wanted.
Thanks all for the replies.

Yes, the "I" and "D" builds were both universal. "E" was the version that shipped on Verizon bought models and "M" (no factory image) was a T-Mobile OTA. But all builds and radios will work on any N6. I was running "I" on Sprint with 95r radio in the USA.

I don't know which builds are carrier specific.. But the original TMO update applied to unbranded stock if you had a TMO connection.

OTA looks for a specific build to update on top of.. If you update to TMO build, no unbranded OTA or other carrier OTA will be looking for your build because its TMO specific.

The original TMO build didn't have anything specific in it.. The latest ones I think may allow wifi calling.. Verizon I think needed something to allow VoLTE with data simultaneously.
Ultimately, you can flash any stock image on any nexus 6 and it will work. With those 2 carriers, you may miss some functionality though.

Does anyone knows if is possible to unlock a Droid 4 or to buy an unlocked one? I am in Venezuela and I want one of those phones. Thanks in advanced.
This is pretty much the same as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1537658
Right now, no it is not possible to get the Droid 4 unlocked as the GSM radio is not enabled and thus it is only running on Verizon CDMA/LTE bands. Hopefully with a firmware update Verizon will enable the rest of the radios in the device.
Thank you blpw , it is very nice to know it, I will wating for any update from Motorola/Verizon
How long does it usually take to get this update so we can use this phone overseas on our networks? I really want the Droid 4 and I have no idea how long new phones take to be "unlocked" for use at other countries. But when it does Im sure this device will make a killing for the seller on ebay

There is no information available to tell how long it will take. This is new territory, having an LTE phone from Verizon that is theoretically global capable. All previous VZW global phones were 3G and worked everywhere out of the box.
I have read that Verizon will enable GSM roaming for this phone with an firmware upgrade by the first half of the year.
Can firmware update change the frequency? I read this at a forum
So the phone is pointless to wait for if they ever do release that firmware update?
A firmware update can not add frequency compatibility to a phone, it is a hardware limitation.

You can have the hardware but without the properly software you have nothing. The same thing happened with the Xyboard from Verizon. Look at google: "Software update gives the Motorola Droid Xyboard 8.2 global roaming capabilities"
awww now I dont know if I should just get the HTC mytouch slide 4 or wait for the Droid, Ill be spewing if they dont release this global roaming software, I dont understand this frequency stuff and I still dont really know what Australia should require much, I know some of the stats but Ill be peaking if the Droid never gets this software then I wait for nothing.

I keep reading that the UK and other places received an update to 1.29, and they keep saying that the US will be getting the same one later. However, I read somewhere (just one site) that the US already comes pre-loaded with 1.29, which is true, because my Sprint HTC One is a 1.29 variant. Do we already have the update that everybody else just received? Were our phones already updated before they were even released?
I find it a little hard to believe that the 1.29 in the UK is the same as the 1.29 that I have, because I believe that updated rolled out around April 24th, and my phone was manufactured on April 14th.
Anybody care to chime in?
most carriers here will roll out manufacturer updates at a slower pace. the reason why EURO versions are already super updated is cause they are world unlocked and the updates are most likely being pushed out by HTC themselves. while here in the US, ANY carrier ( sprint, tmo, ATT) will get the update from HTC add all their bloatware, brute force test it(brute force is subjective LOL) and make sure it works on their variants of the HTC one, THEN push it out to us via OTA update. Now since all HTC ones in the US and EURO models are essentially the same i dont see why your just not using a custom version of the latest 1.29. if your waiting for a carrier approved version. you're probably going to have to wait a bit.

Actually, Sprint HTC One is special due to different radio to support CDMA. All the other HTC One variants in Europe and North America have a different radio.
There is a post in the Sprint HTC One development forum on what files are needed for the Sprint ROM, and it appears that TrickDroid is in the process of adding Sprint support here (not complete yet per the changelog). None of the other ROMs with the .13 update that I can see support Sprint at this time though.
This post for example shows that the "Android Revolution" ROM will work on pretty much all variants except Sprint: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2223236
yes with the exception of sprint. thanks for pointing out. lols totally forgot about that. good thing i dropped ship off Sprint to TMO!
Hey Guys. Love the forums. Searched but still not really sure about this. Couldn't really find much information for the XT1050.
About two weeks ago I purchased a Moto X from my carrier. They are a very small carrier. The firmware on my phone is android 4.2.2. It's the ghost_row.lra version. I would like to update to 4.4.2 (or to the most current version of android possible) but I can't find the update for my phone. I called Motorola and they told me that all updates have been released for ALL phones and that it's up to my carrier to release. With my carrier being so small, I have never seen them release a software update for any phone (except the iphone which apple updates). After searching I couldn't find any 4.4.2 firmware for the xt1050. Almost every setting in my phone references Verizon, so I was wondering if I could just possibly flash my phone with a Verizon rom? My biggest hold up is that I kind of thought the Verizon Moto X was the XT1060, does that make a difference? With my phone being pretty generic does this mean that my bootloader is unlocked and if so would flashing it lock me to a Verizon rom?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Just not really sure what the best/safest thing to do is because I would really like to keep my phone up to date.
I personally am thinking its not a good idea. From what I am reading your carrier, Thumb Cellular, did partner with Verizon Wireless for the rural LTE project. That might be why you are seeing verizon wireless in certain parts of your phone.
It might work...might not. I dont think it will though. Have you reached out to Thumb to see when they plan to update to 4.4?

Would there be any custom rom that I might be able to flash? I haven't found any specifically for the xt1050. I haven't contacted my carrier yet. VERY SMALL company. I may have to ask them but 90% of the time I have to go to my carrier for troubleshooting they never have any idea what I'm talking about or how to fix anything.

The only way to flash a custom rom is if you can unlock your bootloader. Otherwise you are stuck with ROMs which have been digitally signed by Motorola.
You try this???

Hello All,
I'm considering getting a Nexus 6 on Verizon, as my company is moving away from ATT. My understanding is that the Nexus 6 in the Google Play Store and direct from Verizon are physically identical phones, since the GP version has worked with Verizon since launch (just Verizon wouldn't activate it). I know that Verizon has made several modifications to the Nexus 6 that they are shipping, like they usually do with Nexus phone (Thinking back to the Galaxy Nexus fiasco), but they were very minor. Specifically, they added in their changes to the build.prop for tethering to be blocked without a subscription.
Do any of you know, if I get one, if I can just flash the stock factory images from Google and get OTA updates from Google with all of the tethering functionality and such unlocked by default? Is the build.prop modification the only difference?

Build.prop isn't different. The devices are identical. The advantages/differences of the VZW N6 versus every other at two fold:
1) VZW device IMEI is "whitelisted" on Verizon. No others are. This means that if you buy from anywhere else, you are going to have to fool Verizon (several ways to do this). They won't give you a SIM. And this, in turn, means that you will not get your BYOD discount on EDGE.
2) VZW version ships with LMY47E (which includes 98R radio). There is no OTA for this. But the factory image can be downloaded from Google and fastboot flashed.

There is no "Google Play" edition phone. You can buy a Nexus 6 from the Google Play store, but it's not a special edition. It's the same phone you can buy from Motorola, Amazon, Best Buy, etc. Verizon whitelists their IMEI as I've noted above. There are four factory images for 5.1, LMY47D, LMY47E, LMY47M, and LMY47I. You can flash any on these on any Nexus 6.
And, you're welcome.

its the same software. when you put in the verizon sim and boot the first time, is when it installs verizons apps. if you boot the first time without the sim catd, it wont install verizons apps.

This is according to Verizon...
From the Verizon Website said:
Advanced Calling 1.0 is a first generation suite of services enabled by VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology.
VoLTE is a new technology platform that delivers voice calls over the 4G LTE network instead of the traditional voice network.
The benefits of Advanced Calling 1.0 include:
- HD Voice
- 1-way or 2-way video calls* (including support for video calls over Wi-Fi)
- 6-way conference calls
- Simultaneous voice and 4G LTE data**

Google has not provided any official definitions, but it's generally accepted here (Not hard and fast rules, though) that:
LMY47D is for AT&T and Sprint
LMY47E is for Verizon
LMY47M is for T-Mobile
LMY47I is for international (but a lot of US users use it, myself included).

Im thinking about buying the s8+ verizon phone from samsnug direct as they have a great trade in program currently
my questions are..
Do i have to be on verizon to get updates? Im thinking of taking it to straight talk
Can i flash an unlocked firmware of this and the phone still remains working fine?
DOe sit have bands for tmobile / att ?
They are supposedly the same exact hardware. Some of us flashed the combination firmware to be able to unlock the LTE bands. If you stay on Verizon firmware, you will not get any OTA's. However you can use their update software as well as Samsung smart switch software to do manually updates. Plus you can always download VZW firmware from places like Updato.

I am interested in buying the galaxy s8 plus for verizon as well since i will be getting a good deal but I use and would like to stay using AT&T service.
I know that the verizon model is GSM unlocked and could be used with AT&T. I would need to update the APN's to make everything work correctly.
My concern is if it will pick up all the AT&T bands if the phone even supports all the bands. You stated you flashed the combination firmware to unlock the LTE bands.
Would that be exactly what i would need?
If so do you have a link ?
after posting this question I will be doing a search as well.
TIA.
You should just flash the Att firmware then. Check the switch carrier posts for detailed instructions
