Hello, it's been a while since I've posted on XDA, but recently I got a Moto x 2014 for ATT, made on motomaker. I customized it for a white front, but after a week?? or so, some parts of the front of my screen is a different shade of white from the rest. However, I feel that this is happening under the screen, because that part of the glass is still smooth.
My question is, is there any way to fix this? If not, does this go under Motorola's warranty? (I didn't get the additional protection warranty, just the default)
I attached a picture of the discoloration, taken with my first gen Moto x haha
Your screen is delaminating. If you have not dropped it or chipped the glass it should be covered under warranty. It will only get worse.

When you say delaminating, do you mean the bezel is lifting from whatever it is supposed to be adhering to underneath it?

Hello All,
Has anyone attempted to replace the glass portion of the display? (A part like this: http://www.etradesupply.com/replacement-part-for-motorola-moto-x-front-housing-with-glass-lens.html). The only other option I see is replacing the full assembly, which is undesirable but may be necessary. Just curious if anyone has had a go at this before.

I was wondering the same. Not because my glass needs to be replaced, but because the plastic around the outside has a few knicks in it.

Haven't done it myself, but maybe that helps?

They do have a good breakdown of how to remove the display assembly, but sadly it doesn't talk about whether the glass can be removed separately or not
I'm not sure it's possible. According to Anandtech:
" The front glass and touch panel are fused into the plastic lip which rings the top side of the Moto X. They’re not separate parts, but literally fused together into one. Motorola is very proud of this feature since it results in one unbroken surface instead of the usual pressure-fit plastic ring affair with a raised section or gap."

As far as I can tell, you are correct. The only way to replace the glass is to replace the entire display assembly (200$). Quite a bummer, but fused displays seem to be the way of the future. Thanks for looking into this everyone!

The good thing is that add long as you don't break the display, it is SUPER smooth along the edges, and feels great if your finger runs off the edge of the phone.
Posted from the comfort of my Moto X.
The glass around the edge is replaced along with the screen if you ship it to Moto for the repair. Same for the new Droid cousins. Cost me about $190 plus shipping it to them. Moto actually replaced my whole phone, which was nice because the same drop did some cosmetic damage to the unibody. I shopped around but couldn't find the screens to do it myself (this was back in Sept).
Hey all
I got my wife a Moto X on RW but it dropped the first day and had a small crack that has since expanded throughout the screen today with the change in weather just like a windshield. I have been looking at guides on repair but do not know if the only thing I need is the the front housing will glass lens or the LCD screen with digitizer?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

First day? Why don't you send it back in for a RMA? From what I know, it's very difficult to replace the screen because the digitizer is fused into the screen and the glass itself is heat laminated into the frame...
And wow, I've dropped my moto x on concrete more than once and suffered barely a scratch. You musta been unlucky :/
I cracked the glass on my Moto X. The screen and digitizer still works (seems to respond fine to touch inputs anyway), so my question is can I get away with just replacing the glass?

But I found this glass with black frame replacement: http://www.etradesupply.com/replacement-part-for-motorola-moto-x-front-housing-with-glass-lens.html
Is that all I would need?

From someone who has replaced an iPhone screen (got paid ONLY reason why) and disassembled my own person droid RAZR.. Let me give u this advice.. If u go with only the glass u will have to separate the broken glass away from the LCD and digitizer... VERY difficult.. Ur best way it to order a whole new LCD glass with digitizer and just install that...it'll be more expensive but it'll b easier in the long run.

Don't do it
I work at a cell phone repair shop, I personally cracked my x as well. But please don't just repair the glass. It's a repair I do for galaxy phones on a daily basis, it's extremely tricky and risky. But more importantly, your phone will NEVER work the same again. The only way to put the glass lens on, is to glue the outside frame after you remove the old one. The factory screen has glue all over the lcd, so it sits perfectly and the touching is flawless. Yours will not be this way, I PROMISE you that. I'm great at the doing this kind of repair and I would never do it to my own device. It may work well for a couple of months. But you will have problems with bubbles, and most importantly, responsiveness. DON'T JUST REPLACE THE LENS
Yeah, I'm convinced... thanks for the help to both of you.

I want to change just the plastics arround the phone because a drop that damage and its ugly and if i want to sell the phone will value much less.
I noticed a slight ripple effect on the screen while applying a little pressure on the screen. Its not noticeable all of time though. It doesn't bother me too much but I was wondering if its normal or I should do an exchange?
On mine it happens too, so don't wory
Ok thanks...I appreciate your response.
I'm getting this as well, but I don't have to apply any pressure. Just a normal tap anywhere on the screen causes ripples at the very center of the screen. It is mostly noticeable on a dark screen. I'm curious if this is a defect or just the way all new Moto Gs are. I don't want to go through with an exchange if they all do it. Is there anyone with the new Moto G who doesn't have this issue?
At least in my I don't have it.. Only when I push harder..
Even the iPhones have this phenomenon and it's not a fault.
Phones these days don't come with hard glass on top. The semi-flexible glass along with the digitizer are bonded to the LCD. So when you apply enough force/pressure, you can see ripple effects (especially on plain shades like mid grey and navy blue).
My Moto G has the same problem. I took two pictures.
As nielo said I can see the effect especially on mid grey. But I don't need any force. Simple touching the screen somewhere causes the stain on this position. For me it looks like something is pushing from behind on the panel when I use the phone. I am a bit afraid about breaking the screen someday.

That's exactly what mine looks like. I decided not to exchange mine because it seems that it is just an issue with the Moto G.

I've been using iPhone since the first one and I've never had this problem before. I can press hard on my 5S and there aren't any ripples. The only other phone I've ever seen this happen with before was an HTC 8X.

A friend of mine has the same phone and no problems with his screen. If you have a look at a disasembled Moto G 2nd you can see that the battery may push against the screen. Exactly at the place where I have the problemes is a spacer between the screen an the battery. If the battery is bad and becomes bigger you will have this ugly stain due to perssure from behind. I sent it back and hope they will replace my battery because I also have only around 2 hours display on time even with lowes brighness. I will report, when I get it back.

I certainly hope that isnt normal, but you are not alone. I have had it on my moto g 2014. i have been through two replacements and even the 3rd has signs of it. Sure it isnt a huge nuisance but it shouldnt be happening on a phone. I have had multiple android phones in the past and none of them exhibited this kind of behavior with the same amount of pressure on it. Certainly didnt help that my rma got stuck for 2 weeks and when they did send me my second replacement the practically just put in a box that it can easily rattle around in...
I just got my Moto G 2nd back from service with a short letter. They wrote that the refurbishment was successful and that my device now meets the manufacturer requirements.
BUT: In fact nothing changed! I still get the ugly stain whenever I touch the screen. Perhaps they replaced the battery... I don't know.
So, long story short, I've had my Moto z3 play for exactly 30 days now, last night I dropped it from MAYBE, 3 feet off the ground and it landed face down, front screen is cracked / spider-webbed all over, just wondering what experiences anyone has between Motorola doing a repair, local repair shops, and doing it yourself... I don't have the accidental damage insurance Moto offers, but I love this phone and have to figure something out..
Any input would be GREATLY appreciated...
Wish I could help, but I got no info to share except that when/if you get a new one . . . TEMPERED GLASS SCREEN PROTECTOR! Saved me a few times.

The screen is very simple to replace I had to replace it when I shattered my screen. Bought one off eBay I think for 50$. Just use a heat gun to loosen the adhesive on the sides. Took me about 15 minutes to do.
Just an update, got it replaced at a local phone repair shop, pretty happy with it other than 1 issue, when I power off the phone, then power it back on, the screen is completely black, even though I can hear the hello Moto boot animation, and can feel the vibrations when I touch the screen. However, if I boot to recovery/bootloader mode and THEN power it on, the screen works just fine. Anyone have any ideas?

I broke my screen after a week (phone is nice but isn't durable at all).
I'm worried about screen quality. If I get a replacement, are they all the same? Or are some better? It wasn't as bright as I'd hoped to begin with so I don't want it to get worse.

The only difference I've noticed is that on my new replacement screen, it doesn't have the Motorola/Moto lettering logo on the front bottom chin of the screen, as it originally did, other than that I haven't noticed any difference in quality, brightness, etc..
Sorry about your phone. Same thing happened here - phone fell like 2 feet (with a screen protector) and bam, done. A new screen didn't help in my case. I replaced the fpc connector as well and nope, no go. These phones are extremely fragile. I say abandon ship, bite the bullet and get a new phone.

Think I may do the same. Have my moto x4 for a backup. Other than freezing up (which I could probably fix) it's not bad. I really wanted the amoled screen, but very disappointed with the brightness in daylight. Plus I don't want to pay $50+ only for it to not work as yours did. Isn't worth it imo. Which is to bad since I really like the moto interface.
Anyone know of a good replacement?
Any phone is apt to have the screen shatter without a case when dropped, while that doesn't help I want to link a video showing the Z3 Play screen is not that easy to break. The Poetic Karbon can be had for less than $10 which gives adequate drop protection it seems.

This is true. When I dropped and shattered mine, (64gb Moto Z3 Play Unlocked) I had just purchased the device 5 days prior from Target (they had it on clearance for $150, and they screwed up big-time, they had it listed as the 32gb variant, even though the box specifically said 64gb lol), anyways, I dropped it with NO case, and NO screen protector, onto concrete from about 3 feet off the ground..
However, now I have the Lenovo official aluminum bumper case that's compatible with mods, as well as a tempered glass screen protector, and have dropped it at least 4 or 5 times on a hard wood floor, from about 5-6 feet up, and has not even affected it...
