[Q] Moto X 2014 5.0.2 update broke my phone - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody,
I'm new, I hope someone can help me here ... I'm quite sure somewhere on these forums there must already be answers for my problem but I'm too dumb to find them.
I have the European? 2014 Moto X (not sure how to get the exact model now?!)
Unlocked bootloader, rooted.
Everything was fine, except today I got the 5.0.2 (?) OTA update ...
I didn't want to do it, but it kept asking. The moment I pressed "don't ask again" the phone rebooted
and now it's stuck at the white bootup screen (Motorola logo)
I somehow managed to get into the fastboot? mode once, by somehow pressing buttons at startup ... but, well
My two questions are:
1. Can I still backup my data, photos, textfiles, etc etc
2. How do I go back to a working system. (maybe without loosing my data)
Please tell me if it's possible, and how ... or please push me into the right directions.
But as I'm half panicking detailed instructions would be so fantastic.

Personally, how I would recover data, is boot to fastboot and flash TWRP again (since you indicated you were unlocked boot loader). In TWRP, plug in the device to a computer via USB and your files will be there. Then you can reflash the stock firmware and be good to go. If you are comfortable flashing the firmware through fastboot, you can choose to not wipe data and you should be all set.
It may be worth trying just clearing the cache and seeing if you can boot.

Hey! Thanks a lot!
I did fastboot boot twrp, and managed to backup my data on the internat storage! Yeah! Thanks!! <3
Now to part 2, I tried to wipe the cache partition in TWRP, but it doesn't help; when I reboot it still only shows the white logo..
Should I wipe other partitions aswell? (davikcache?)
If there's a way without loosing the phone setup, it would be great.
(Installed apps ... open tabs in firefox etc ...)
I also have a "online nandroid" backup, I think from back then, right after I rooted.
Would I restore the system.img from there?
Will this remove installed apps?
Or should I restore all partitions made by online nandroid backup?!
(I thought this would be better than... or how would I find the right stock firmware online for my device?)
Sorry for being such a beginner!!!!

Lollipop actually doesn't use dalvik, so that won't help. If you have a nandroid, you of course can restore to that but it would likely lose your apps/settings. You can try restoring just the system, it sort of depends on what went wrong. In my experience being stuck not booting, I generally just reflash everything. Not the most convenient but it is the most effective.

Hey xKroniK13x,
thanks a lot for caring!
Of course, catastrophy happened:
I did fastboot boot twrp and tried to restore system from there, didn't work so I restored system _and boot from my nandroid backup there
guess this was very stupid because
Now my phone boots right into the fastboot mode, and I can't fastboot boot TWRP anymore,
it says "incomplete boot image for booting"
partition sizes wrong, etc etc ...
what I did now was flashing TWRP, at least this worked and I can boot it from the phone now.
So, please, one more time help (for a very stupid user ):
1. I guess keeping my apps and settings is out of discussion now, haha
But is there a way, with unlocked bootloader, TWRP installed to go back to stock?
2. Now ... given my phone is not completely broken, I just thought about installing CM?!
Would this be recommended? is it working fine?
I'm just thinking about it, because with Cyanogenmod I won't have problems like this in the future, right?
(OTA updates destroying my phone because of root....)
Whoa, I'm sorry for posting this here, but ...

If you've been contemplating installing a ROM, now would be a good time to do so. Just remember to wipe the data on the phone even though it doesn't boot. And CM OTA shouldn't cause issues like this, it just flashes the zip file in your recovery. Doesn't care about root or anything of course. Otherwise, if you'd like to do stock, just use MDM to get the firmware and flash away. Hope this helped!

Try clearing your cache in a recovery/fastboot, or reflash the firmware! No guarantee the cache will fix it, but sometimes it will.

Thank you for your help.
Clearing the cache doesn't work, so I'm searching for others ways...
Can you tell me how to flash the firmware with adb ?
Thanks
Edit : I have an European version

That is answered in the FAQ thread... It is a guide for Moto G but it is applicable for this device too. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2876769

@xKroniK13x
Hey, thanks for somehow guiding me through this :victory:
MDM didn't work, so I just went for the CM 12.1 nightly.
I also had concerns because in my attempts to clear cache etc etc I had "wrong partition size" etc etc
But CM installed without problems!
(Just one more question- there can't be any problems in the future because of messed up partitions, right? Does CM fix this by installing? Or should I stop caring, if it works, it works, right?!)
In fact, CM runs great, fantastic on my phone.
I lost some app data, and most annoyingly my SMS, but ...
Other than that, I'm really happy with CM
@benjo22
Hey, I tried to fix it by clearing cache partitions from a fastboot TWRP (I don't know how you call it, I just booted TWRP without installing it)
This didn't work, so I tried to restore a nandroid backup,
but this made it even worse. (partition errors, only fastboot mode, etc etc)
Just booting with TWRP without installing also didn't work anymore,
so I put TWRP on the phone, which luckily worked, downloaded CM 12.1, installed it via TWRP,
never did it before, but I was lucky, it seems like it worked great!
Even kept my "SD CARD" data, but lost apps and some data ...
So I didn't fix the bootloop, but I hope I made it better, futureproof...

Glad you got up and running. CM shouldn't cause any future issues as far as partitions and such.

thats correct these are via ADB mfastboot (which ignores OTA fingerprint check) as flashes full firmware, not the ota.zip which is only a smaller (not full firmware) update
ota.zip is NOT full firmware, so will not fix a corrupted / altered or non stock firmware
but you say you've flashed many roms.... you need to be on correct rom and matching recovery and also un-rooted to flash a OTA.zip as it checks Recovery version and the build fingerprint inside /system folder of original stock rom. if any of these mismatch it will fail.
also (apologies if wrong) but dont you believe your phone to be corrupted or read only hence why you cant flash images?

Phone wont boot, its gets to the point where a blue m apears the goes to a blank screen, when flahing a rom via fasboot, all seems to get right but after restart is like nothing happened, i go back to the same state, same thing happens with twrp or philz, if you want to help, we can continue here but your more then wellcome to read this (nevermind i see you allready did)
So let me make a backup of twrp and see if i can post results, thanks allot, iveen waiting to fix this for so many days now.
A bit of background, i consider myself an advance user, someone that can google problems and fix stuff with it, ivee flashed alot of cellphones in the past ,many xt1064 and other models, just like everybody ealse, easy and no problems, but this one i just cant figure out. Seems like its on read only mode or freezed as a deepfreezed computer, dont mater how many roms i flash and the way i do, everything comes back to the same state, even if i reforma partitions, eeven if i delete pictures or folders, they come back once i reboot.
Its going to take 5hrs to upload my backup

ok ii'm thinking corrupted partitions too.... but if you are willing to try i've made a xt1063 easy installer script for you to try now normally i work on xt1068 and would test on my xt1068 - so have NO xt1063 its UNTESTED - use at own risk.....
just stock firmware / drivers / adb and mfastboot ( same as my xt1068 script) I see no reason it should not be compatible.
download to pc / unzip to folder / read instruction inside
https://mega.co.nz/#!Tok2DJ6T!ggMoQDfAzuA7cmQQjbGCbXolWZTnx_567vG02CiURVsxt1063 4.4.4 easy installer
I repeat it YOUR choice - if it works- great - if runs ok but rom remains same would suggest somethings corrupt - if it doesnt work at all back to square 1....
now im presuming your boot loader is unlocked, as will fail if locked or relocked - if you use and get error please report what they are, i would have done 5.0.2 but its only 50% downloaded with a 1 hr+ to still go, estimate 2 hrs from time of this post until I can post a link
im uploading the backup, in the mean time i dont know if this is of any use ,its the recovery log zipped...

just to let you know TWRP is now 2.5.8.0 fixes some bugs cause older versions know to break permissions in Lollipop!!

will look but cant promise
I tried your easy install tool, brand new drivers, diferent usb port, all went smooth but after restart, im at the same situation. Funny thing, and ivee done this multiple times, after reflashing a new rom, most of them never give errors, then after nothing happens , i flash twrp and boot it, and all the files (the original ones , not the just flashed ones) are there intact, even pictures and music.

ok have you tried mfastboot erase userdata and mfastboot erase cache? from a command window?
i.m interested in the I flash twrp and boot..... does this mean you are able to replace recovery with a custom recovery ON phone
rather than temporary booting into it?

Yeah i tried those erase commands many many times and same result, i cant replace recovery at all, only boot of it, so when i do " mfastbooot flash recovery twrprecovery.img " then try to boot of recovery, i boot into factory recovery not, twrp, but if i do, "mfasboot boot twrprecovery.img" i can see the recovery img gets flashed and the phone boots of twrp. Weird behavior. So when i notice that i tried to flash a rom with mfastboot, and at the end i gave the command mfasboot boot recovery.img (the original rom recovery) then it gets flashed, and phone reboots, but i gets stuck at the motorola logo. This phone its playing hard to get....
heres, my backup https://mega.co.nz/#!md0AwbLR!uWe9PLklIugOziPLV6O_plbU-Zz9EXbqRvUVpYxECk0 hope you can find something.
Im going to take this phone to a shop to see if they can fix it as i have lost all hope, thanks refuuge for your help.

Stuck in bootloop

First, Happy Thanksgiving to any/all US users!
Happy Thursday to everyone else.
I have read the other threads related to bootloop issue, however, none seem to address my particular issue.
I will try to give as much info as I can......
I am rooted, unlocked bootloader, TWRP installed.
I used fastboot method, not a tool
I have Xposed, and have using several modules and have not experienced any issues until today.
I downloaded fonts from the playstore.
Made a nandroid backup.
I noticed when nandroid was running, it said something to the effect of no backup of boot and no backup of recovery.
I googled this and only found a few posts on the internet that mentioned it, and from what I could tell, I shouldn't worry about it ( )
Went into Xposed, placed a check next to ifonts, and rebooted phone.
I've been in a bootloop ever since.
I can boot into recovery, and attempted to restore the nandroid backup. When it completed, I restarted the system, only to find myself stuck in bootloop.
Went back into recovery, and did another restore from a backyup I did in TWRP a week ago.
When it completed and I restarted system....bootloop.......
OK!
So I thought perhaps I lost my boot image somehow.
Restarted to bootloader, and opened command prompt and ran
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Powered off the phone, then attempted to restart system.....bootloop.
Anyone have any suggestions/advice/directions?
I would be ever so grateful, and THANKFUL, for any assistance offered.

your phone cant run without a boot.img, thats the kernel and it controls the whole phone. it would never ever boot up without. anyways, what you need to do is wipe data in twrp, then reflash your rom and supersu.
I don't want to sound ignorant, but I'm going to anyway...
Could you please tell me which file is my rom?
I followed the guide(s) for rooting, and downloaded the files as were instructed, and as far as I know, I didn't download a ROM.
Only a custom recovery (TWRP), a modified boot image, then flashed SuperSU through TWRP.
Is the ROM on my phone somewhere? I can boot into recovery and look through file manager.
I also have TitaniumBackup. Would it be in a backup from that app somewhere?
Oh I didn't see the above question. So no, while the rom is on your phone, it's not in any flashable form, so you should download the latest factory image for shamu and flash that, a modified boot image for that version, and then root it. Do a factory reset, clear cache and dalvik, and you shoulbe up and running.
factory reset/wipe data might fix it, if not, then you need to flash a factory image(since you dont have a flashable cystom rom).
In my files (with platform tools on my PC) I have a boot.img, recovery.img and a twrp.img......
is the recovery.img my rom?
I apologize if I come across as not getting it....flashing stock image will remove root, correct?
I would like to avoid this.
I will download a custom ROM if I have to, to avoid this, I just want to make sure I understand what I'm doing first.
If that recovery.img is not what I need, and stock WILL unroot, then I will gladly pull a custom rom.
Will I lose root if I do a factory reset?

factory reset and you wont lose root. factory.img and you will lose root. a custom rom requires twrp recovery, a custom kernel(for root), and the latest supersu.
Are you sure that it's not the xposed module is causing the bootloop??
use TWRP filemanager to delete /data/data/de.robv.android.xposed.installer/conf/modules.list
and try to boot again

a rom always has a kernel included, as thats what ties the software rom to your hardware phone. it ties your cpu to it, your buttons, etc.. all to your rom. its also like the btain center to your phone.
Alright!
I seem to be back up and running.
Now I just have to spend the day getting my device back the way I had it before I crashed.
If I try and use my restore from Titanium Backup, will that mess anything up since it was made on a different ROM? Or, is that just a backup of my apps and stuff?
I want all my modules from Xposed, my wallpapers and stuff......
Thanks for all your help!
eta:
Also, SU says 'installed" in the play store, bu it's not showing up in my app drawer??? (And there is no option to 'uninstall' like any other app would have--weird)

Can't Boot Into System, Only TWRP

Here's the whole story:
I was on an unofficial build of RR CM13, encrypted, using TWRP 3.0.2-1.
I wiped data, dalvik, cache, and flashed the newest Official RR 7.1.1 and open-gapps.
I boot into the new ROM and start setting stuff up.
I restore some apps' data using Titanium Backup, then reboot.
On reboot I'm greeted with the device setup screen
I reboot, wipe, reflash a bunch of times
A few times:
When I rebooted after using the system my PIN doesn't decrypt the system/data (booting into the system)
When I rebooted after using TWRP my PIN does decrypt (booting into the system)
At some point during this I try wiping everything from TWRP, but it freezes, goes black, and then the notification LED turns white. I hold the power button and boot back to TWRP.
Apparently wiping /data is the problem (everything else wipes just fine if I do them individually)
I boot back into the system, set it up, and do a full factory reset from there (after offloading my stuff from Internal Storage)
Back to TWRP, now no matter what I flash or restore, I don't end up booting into the system, only into TWRP
I've also tried TWRP 3.0.4-0 (which wouldn't decrypt my data), and I've reflash TWRP a few times.
How do I actually boot into my system? It's been 7 hours, and I'm losing my mind.

Boot to your ROM through the power button...
Manually..

Not sure if you've tried this yet, but considering you've already backed your phone up, I'd just recommend to start clean and use the unbricker tool.

Do what he said. You've already wiped your internal storage, so just start from scratch.

Thanks, that worked, but now when I try to boot into recovery I get a black screen.
I was able to use the Toolkit to boot into TWRP and flash my ROM. Any ideas how to fix this?

TWRP has enormous potential and so does ADB try to use them.
First ensure TWRP is working, If it works you're 80℅ safe , then further do some XDA search as per your need. I am sure it will work again.
This is purely my experience since 6 years I am flashing .

Your TWRP is working right!
go to TWRP/ Advanced/ADB Sideload
type "adb sideload /path/to/rom.zip"
Mate, recommend using ADB Sideload on TWRP itself is the only viable option you have. OR if that doesn't work and you still have the PIN issues, you should definitely use the Unbrick Tool and get everything back to Stock, and then reflash everything
Note: Using the unbrick tool will cause it to relock bootloader, so you're gonna have to start over again.
Cheers!

Accident total wipe, no backup. Please help!

Hi all,
I am new to the BLU R1 HD scene. Just got my phone this week. It's a amazon prime variant with firmware v7.4.2 (or v7.2.4?).
I got twrp installed and wiped everything through TWRP, including the internal storage - which removed my only NANDroid backup image.
My phone would freeze at the startup BLU logo now. But I could still enter recovery mode (TWRP). And I could still see the TWRP folder from my Ubuntu (which shows as a internal storage drive)
What should I do? Is there a way to flash it back to stock ROM? Where can I download a stock rom?
I am in panic mode now. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

take it easy . sounds like you wiped /system too. but that is ok since you still have access to twrp
take a rom from here
https://forum.xda-developers.com/r1-hd/development/modified-8-3-stock-rom-t3602672
copy it to the phone (internal storage) as seen from your ubuntu.
boot to twrp and select install, browse to the zip file copied to internal

Oh my god that's good to hear! (especially from someone who knows his stuff!)
I was just looking at that other thread you posted.
Okay I give that a try. Thanks much!
It fixed my phone just as you said! The v8.4 rom is even better with higher level security update. Thanks!
Once you have twrp installed, you can recover from most things that go wrong.
One exception is when people do a "wipe all" and erase the phone's MEID unique identification. When that happens, the phone can boot and work but can no longer be connected to a phone service provider's network.
And the more common problem with this phone is people who accept an over-the-air update that disables SP Flash Tool and then want to get root or flash their phones. They are out of luck at that point.

Bricked X2 pro, still have TWRP -- urgent help needed

Hi Friends
I just got the message from TWRP app that there is a new version available. I just installed it through the app and then rebooted the phone.
And now the problem: It boots only into TWRP. I can't boot anymore into OS! I tried to flash with adb the former TWRP version and vbmeta. But it doesn't help. It still boots into TWRP only.
One strange thingt is, when I reboot, it shows me the "relame - Powered by Android" page for afew seconds. Then the page goes away for a second or so and it restarts again, and goes into TWRP.
Please help me. I urgently Need the phone.
Thanks a lot!

Thank you! Formatting data with the way, where you have to confirm with "yes" worked! Only this was necessary and it booted again to OS! Fortunately I could make a data backup with TWRP. But now the big question: I have a system with unlocked bootloader and C24 OS, as well as working FP. How to install now TWRP and Magisk, and how to get back the data?
@exadeci, @jhha
I guess you have experience in this. Would you be kind enough to share?

Yes I did. The canary version (see below the list on this page, section "Download"). Before I installed TWRP 3.3.1.13 and vbmeta.img, which I got from here (see section "To flash the TWRP" -> Modified VBMETA.
Hi Friends
After a long night with almost no sleeping I finally got a running system with TWRP 3.3.1.13, modified vbmeta.img, Magisk Canary and OS c24. For the first time in my life I bricked a phone just in various ways, one after the other. 2 horrible days are behind me, and i could only finally get a back a working system thanks to all of you, who supported me either in this thread or in various others where I was reading and actively asking questions, depending on the Problem I just had.
Thanks a lot to all of you. You are a great communitiy!
