Hello there,
I've tried Googling and searching these threads, and I can't seem to find anyone else with the same problems as me, so if anyone can help me I'd be really grateful!
Basically, I've had a rooted G1 for about 6 months now, started off using JesusFreke, went on to CM and now I'm running the latest ROM with an 8 gig class 6 SD card. Anyway, everything runs smoothly except for a few niggly things. As far as I can remember I've always had most of these problems since rooting, and now they're worse than ever and starting to grate. I don't think it's my particular handset, as this is the second G1 I've had - although as I said, I haven't read of these problems with other people, so I don't really know. The problems in question are:
1. Email isn't very 'pushy' anymore - when I first got my G1, and for a while after first rooting, I was amazed at the push Gmail...I loved it, and it often worked faster than my computer email client could retrieve emails with its 5-minute interval. However, now my G1 seemingly only downloads emails when it can be bothered, and more often than not I'll do a manual refresh to find about 6 emails waiting for me. It's somewhat annoying really.
2. This is another major thing: Locale just won't recognise where it is anymore. I'll go into Locale for a few seconds, it'll snap on to 'home' or 'work', I'll come out and after about five minutes, it'll jump straight onto the default settings again. I'll do this again, and it happens again, etc. My phone knows where it is, as the maps work perfectly, and I'll even tried leaving GPS on all day, but to no avail. This is a major annoying niggle, and it seems to get better/worse with different updates. Has anyone experienced this? At the moment, Locale is virtually unusable.
3. Since I'm asking for help, the other little niggle is that to add shortcuts to my desktop takes an age...I'll do the longpress, click 'shortcut'...and then wait. And wait. As far as I can remember my phone's always done this (even the old one), but if anyone knows what I'm doing wrong it'd be really good.
In fact, if anyone can help me with any of the problems I've described I'd be really happy...the email and Locale thing are starting to become a big nuisance, and I'm starting to think about changing my handset over it, despite my love of Android, the G1 and the excellent CM updates that Cyanogen tirelessly sends out.
Thanks so much in advance,
Mark
I've never had any of those issues the gmail issue is the only one that woulg get me... what rom did you go with this time around?
Hi, I've just got the standard CyanognMod ROM with the latest 4.2.9.1
I have the same Gmail problem.
No idea how to fix it.
I'm going to say it's probably two things together:
1. Low memory. Having had your G1 for a while, you've installed lots of apps. Each app uses RAM. Low RAM makes everything sluggish and buggy. Uninstall anything you don't use regularly. Doing a full wipe and reflash of the htc update image, and then the latest cyanogenmod, will give you a blazing fast phone again, with everything working beautifully (but you'll have lost ALL your installed apps, saved sms, settings, etc.).
2. Task-killing app. You probably use Taskiller, Close Everything, or something like that. It is killing Gmail so it doesn't refresh, killing locale's location service so it doesn't know where it is, etc. Make sure you exclude ANYTHING that runs in the background constantly to work. Basically, anything that does something automatically, or generates a notification, or anything. Email, gmail, messaging, etc.
Not cool
You can't say niggly, only we can say niggly.
gmail push
there is a way to 'Set download frequency' by default.

'Niggly' is a word of Scandinavian origin which in this context essentially means 'irritating'. It is in no way related to similarly spelt offensive words, which is what I think you're getting at.
Anyway, many thanks to all those who posted help, I deleted a load of programs and it helped greatly. I had no idea that having too many apps, even in an apps2sd setup, would impact performance that much.
Still can't get Locale to work properly though. I'll delete a few more apps and see if that helps.

+10 pts for being spot on.
This may give us some sense on how widespread the issue is. No answers based on informal fixes please.
Meaningless poll.
As long as samsung won't move the app data to the ROM instead of the internal SD, there will be a lag when opening some of the apps.
Menus flow swiftly, though.
Coming from a HTC Touch HD the lag is nonexistent in my view, what stutters people seem to be complaining about are pretty much nonevents to me.
mine had a lag (received today)...until i updated the firmware to JG3. BIG difference now
^
Now this is new to me, is JG3 compatible with UK devices?

It may be meaninless to you, but I would like to have a sense, before purchasing the phone, if this is a widespread issue or just a matter involving few noisy owners. If this is a widespread issue and I need to rely on Samsung's not so impressing update reputation, I may wait a little bit.

You have to remember, people who come into forums are the one with problems.
Nobody goes to the doctors office and say, "Look I'm healthy and I have no problems." and just walk out. Only those with problems or concerns walk into a doctors office, no?

Not these forums. People come to XDA not only with problems but to learn more about their phone and share experiences, especially those early adopters who buy the phone right away.
I sometimes have a bit of lag, but nothing that makes me think, "why did I buy this phone", for me the Galaxy S is everything I wanted from a Android phone, it's powerful, screen is beautiful and it runs all my apps very smoothly.
The lags happened very rarely and most times the phone is snappy. Such things happened to all phones, even my wife's iphone. Still much better than winmo where most things lagged big time.
Though after I switched to using autokiller with aggressive setting, I dun get the lags anymore. My free memory also stay above 100mb all the time without me having to kill any apps manually
I disabled the samsung widgets and i am alot better now.
2 solutions :
We don't have the same phone or we don't know what a lag is
When I try to delete a mail it takes between 10s to 30s. If it is not a lag what is it??
On the iphone I can't tel you how fast it is as it is less than 1 seconde
And I have flashed my phone to the new rom ...

But the thing with your example is, is it really deleting the email in 1 second or is it just displaying the email is gone and just spending 9 seconds in the background actually deleting it?
It's nothing to make it appear that the email has actually gone while it actually does the work in it's own time.

I was using it for over a week, then flashed JG3. Lags seems pretty much gone with this firmware.
I got quite horrendous lag at times on the original firmware (JF3).
Now I am on JG1 with the MoDaCo R2 ROM and Autokiller (set to aggressive originally, now trying on optimum) and I don't seem to get much lag at all, if any. It is like a different phone.
Unfortunately I did have to do a factory reset last night but that was other problems - I do hope that's not a regular occurrence though.
when I say it's a lag i mean that during 10 to 30 sec the phone is blocked with the popup box where you hit the button delete.
I must confess I don't reallycare if the mail is really gone or not in 1s ... what I know is that I have to wait 20sec to be able to open a new mail.
If the iphone is smart enough to display the mail as deleted and let me work on another one while it is really deleting the mail on the background ... it might mean that it has 2 years of advance compared to my phone as it is now. I prefer to believe that's not the case
last night I couldn't get the phone to accept my unlock pattern. had to turn it off completely and then turn it on again...
by "not accept" i mean the screen wouldn't light up red or green when i was swiping my finger over it and the screen would turn on and off.
I'm doing a factory reset now.
I also can't use the kies program - the mtp application flicks on and off.
hoping the factory reset will solve my problems...

I understand that you may have issues but this has nothing to do with a lag, which is what this poll and thread all about.
I just tested mine now, I have the stock JF3(?) ROM that came with the phone, I deleted an email from my Hotmail, and replied to a different email in 2 seconds, no lag in email at all.

I noticed lag sometimes on my JF3 but only when using Yahoo Mail application (from Yahoo Inc.), it just stuck in black screen at either email-loading or going back for some seconds (and many times pop-up came-up to Force Close the application _but_ after some seconds application came back).
This is the only lag I am facing related to emails. Other lag I some time notice in Dolphin HD browser when opening it first time OR switching to new link. Default browser is very fast as compare to this.
Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out if I want to just return my captivate and go back to my iphone, or if there's a way to deal with this thing.
My issues are basically:
Browser perfomance is ****, to say the least. Panning and zooming on most sites is painfully bad - XDA worst than pretty much any other site out there. When I try to type in the browser, I'll hit 10 keys, and 3 will show up...a few seconds later another 2 will be entered...etc. Zooming is bad, I don't know why. Panning just looks jerky/non-fluid.
Bluetooth: I have an Acura with the tech package, so having bluetooth work is kinda a requirement. However, every time I try to do anything bluetooth related, the phone slows to a crawl. If I hit the home softkey, it takes 1-2 minutes for the phone to go home. I eventually have to pull the battery to reset.
Data: Sometimes, it just drops totally. I'm sitting still with 4-5 bars, and suddely the marketplace won't load...or XDA won't load...try a second or third time and suddenly it loads fine. Unsure if this is just the marketplace (and XDA forums) being unreliable, or if the phone's data connection is just THAT bad.
GPS: I did the fixes in the "hidden" settings (supl settings and whatnot) and I now get fixes much faster, but they're always off. I seem to always be on AGPS, and not ever getting sattelite fixes...that, or the settelite fixes are just really as bad as AGPS is.
Perf in general: not so hot. Some things work well, some things will crawl at times.
Facebook: no push notifications? What?
I'm on the latest SRE, and I can flash back to the stock kernel if that'll help...
But in general, my opinion after slightly over a week is that this just feels like when I still played with Linux a few years ago - a toy. Nothing for general consumption, nothing for someone who just wants it to work - and feel free to tell me I'm wrong, I'm still not totally decided and have another 3 weeks to return this...but I'm hard pressed to find a reason to keep using this instead of going back to my iphone. A wireless AP is amazing, but that's the only thing I keep coming back to...and who knows, a jailbroken iPhone might be capable of that?
Thanks for all the thelp!
RA
Are you using JF6 (the stock baseband that came with the phone)? because that one is miserably slow.
switch to JH3 and then flash SRE... it'll feel like an entirely different phone.
I felt the same way until I flashed several firmwares and applied different mods/lag fixes. You have to find what's right for you. It seems that Samsung may have skimped on the software side but they didn't hold back with hardware. With the new voodoo lag fix that's coming out soon, froyo, an official GPS fix, and promising android development for the Captivate, I'd say we're starting to realizing the true potential of this phone. I've never used bluetooth nor do I have any problems with data. You may have a bad phone... Perhaps you should exchange it for another and see if that remedies some problems? The ball is in your court but I could not bare to go back to the iPhone (I've been using it since it came out).
Wrong section of the captivate forum to be asking questions, theres a proper section for that..., about your issues most are plassebo, try flashing a i9000 rom and give it another try.

I'll give that a try then - I did just have to call ATT though to have them put me back onto the iPhone plan, since I'm doing a trip tomorrow and will want a working phone...I'll try flashing a few more things...but tbh, I keep reading about Froyo and GPS fixes...I saw posts about a GPS fix going out a month ago...when will it actually happen?

I totally agree with the earlier posts about trying other setups before giving up on it. I LOVE my setup. UCJH3 firmware, SREv1.2.1a, Tayutama's Lagfix4. All can be found on threads here.Do it step by step and you will see a HUGE difference. The only thing that will still suck, I think, is the GPS. I find mine very erratic. But everything else is great and almost no lag.
Most of your issues are non-existent on the stock ROM - so either you borked something while customizing or your phone has a hardware issue.
The browser should work without issue. GPS is broken, and none of the fixes do much so that we have to wait on Samsung.
The phone is in its infancy. Remember ios 2 on the 3g? Well apple learned a lot and there software is always polished. You may want to wait for the next android support phones. Apple did a good job this time around but the touch screen interface needs too many steps and the home screens are too cluttered I want to put icon any where putting them in groupings helps my eyes and brain navigate. I'll trade the gps and a few bugs for that any day. Phones are supposed to be intuitive, the iphone may be easy but I'll argue all day that is not intuitive. Android may be less easy but I can make it intuitive, it takes a little time and a few market apps though. That's why I chose this phone, but I don't knock iphone users, just the fanboys.
If you like to tinker ands it sounds like you do you may just get addicted to this thing.
The data problems may be do to the stock software, do a reflash of jh3, with the original I couldn't switch from wifi to edge or the other way around without killing the app and restarting it. I haven't noticed that problem lately with jh2

Facebook is badly broken on all Android phones I have ever used. There's a Link to an app called bloo here on XDA I think it's in Hero CDMA apps section. It has notifications and chat.
I found Bloo http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=679556
Yeah Facebook for android absolutely blows. Not just push notifications but the whole app. One of the worst apps I have on my phone. Like today, i had 2 notifications of ppl writing on my wall. When i go to notifications and click on the post to read the end of it, it opens in the browser??? Honestly??? Makes me back out, go to my own profile and then go to the wall. That's crap. Facebook for iPhone is better than the Facebook website, yet i would almost rather delete my Facebook account than use it on android.

This is work in progress and I will update it for 7 days. Original posting can be found here
I'm sure you have heard someone telling you would spend way too much time with your smart phone. As if one could spend time with or without a tool. My phone, besides some rare occasions, is always with or near me. Yet it doesn't mean I spend time with it! I spend time with people, and I might spend my time spending time with using my smart phone to write an email. An if I spend time adjusting it to my needs or the latest desire aroused reading some blogs, so what? I do this for the sake of communication!
How come nobody understands that find difference in concept?
Day 1
25/05/2011, 11 a.m.:
Been checking my emails on the go twice, surfing on xda forum, chatting with the HTC support, writing an email to a friend, again checking my mails but also the market updates - what a pain to see there are no updates available for my installed apps. I check if it is not Sunday. No it’s not Sunday!
I discover how handy Evernotes can be. Copied an address out of the chat conversation and send it straight off to Evernotes. Must admit it was a little fight until I had marked the exact text line I wanted to have copied as it did not recognize it on its own. It would have blown me away had it read my thoughts.
I’m really thinking about one of those tables all the time. I’m kind of pissed somehow about the unfortunate fact there is no real handwriting recognition function on phones or tablets yet that really works - would be mind-blowing! I read the HTC Flyer does make advanced use of the stylus pen for note-taking somehow. I’ve seen some handwritten notes and compared them to the scribbling I am producing this very moment on real paper and there doesn’t seem to be that much of a difference.
However, I will have to type that later and I question this concept of me thoroughly doing it without giving up after a couple of minutes.
I’ve had way too many thoughts die due to the lack of an adequate and effective tool to digitalize my thoughts. I’m way much more impressed by my analogue brain-eye-arm-paper-to-key motion sequence I’ve happily produced as I realize I have really typed and added almost everything I wanted to say.
25/05/2011, 5.51 p.m.:
I wonder if I should give cyanogen latest night builds #87 a try again and get rid of my perfectly working Android Revolution ROM setup. I’m downloading, charging and backing up my phone for every eventuality...
Day 2
26/05/2011, 5.33 a.m.:
I have CyanogenMod Nightly Build #87 setup & running. Will see how it gets through the day. Fingers crossed the battery will not drain exaustingly.
26/05/2011,5.45p.m.:
In the mood for taking some screenshots and willing to do a brief review of my cyanogenmod 7 experiences...
Day 4
28/05/20011, 7.55.a.m.:
Can't hardly believe I haven't changed that much. Phone is working pretty fine, except there seems to be a problem between Fullscreen Caller ID and the call recorder that came with the modified kernel I flashed yesterday. I just won't use FSCI, instead, when I make a phone call it will try to use both the default dialer as well as the full screen dialer as the same time. The result is devastating: it will dial the number twice.
Day 6
30/05/2011, 1.53 p.m.:
Left home at 7.30 pm, battery went down to 51% by 12 a.m. and 32% by 2 p.m., whilst all I did were a few twitter & google mail updates, no phone calls, watching videos or other heavy-consuming processes.
Seems like the un-official CM7 nightly ROM I have flashed (Chezbell-cm7-20110529) is a battery killer! SetCPU is enabled, with a powersave governor profile activated when display is off, undervolted –25mA script running and I am nevertheless more than half-way out of battery within not even 7 hours – not really a full working-day yet!
Feeling unhappy and unsatisfied, after that the phone had been running so smoothly during the weekends ( some heavy 3G and EDGE-surfing in bad reception areas, gps navigation etc etc without a problem and far less battery drain). Phone was way more responsive with CM7 #87. Will switch to LORDmodUE 2.1 kernel tonight and see if it helps.
Day 7
31/05/2011, 3.13 p.m.:
I did it! I ruined it all! My sd card is totally erased! Holy frigging s’#!§t! What happened I still can’t recall exactly but I guess in any case I should learn to be more careful and most important: read and think before I act! I flashed a kernel while surfing the xda on my way home and now I don’t even find that stupid thread.
I guess it is a good point to stop my documentation now and draw my conclusions of my 7 days with cyanogenmod nightlies now.
Admins: please delete this thread. I've posted it to HTC DesireHD thread as I think it is more suitable...
Hi guys,
i'm just interested in how do you guys use your gear and which features you guys miss. i would suggest that all of you put it in a Format like i'll Show you. So it's easier for devs and maybe Samsung to overview this thread statistically. Maybe some of them will get inspired. who knows....
(sorry for the formatting of the text. but i have to use Internet Explorer and it automatically fixes it in a bad way. but i do not really care...sorry about that. )
Reason why i bought my Galaxy Gear
I thought my note 3 is too big for pulling it out that often just to know which time it is. Plus the uneccessary times when nothing important beeped like a new thread or a uploaded YouTube video. I thought it would be handy to have again a good looking watch for using my phone less.
Cause we all know how often we pull it out to check the time and begin to senseless checking here, replying there...For me this worked. Plus i thought it would be pure awesomeness to control music with this.
How do your needs changed or which features you began to miss when you had it quite a time?
-Seeing and changing wifi state, mobile data and maybe more but that 2 are most important to me.
-Broswing through the Music library of the currently used musicplayer. Missing this one was the most dissapointing thing to me.
-I had moments where it would have been very good when i could have used the camera a a silent security camera without time limitations and keeping the Screen black. So the thief won't recognize that he got on tape. This would be good to for uneccessary Police violence too.
- i would like to read all incoming Messages with a Speed Reader app like spritz.
-General Spritz like speedreading Integration
-Better capability of short replys from the gear to Facebook Messenger and apps like that.
-Ofcourse Google Now Integration instead of useless S-Voice...
- Clockfonts! MOAR JUST MOAAARRR or direct font using Integration...oooor zooper on tizen....xD
Android or Tizen?
After using Tizen a few days i say i am surpised about Tizen. Ofcourse there are no apps not even a calculator. But the System is more responsive and the Batterylife actually is much better for my usage. On Saturday at 17:30 o'clock it was charged to 100% now it's at 15...Before it lasts a day. Batterylife is more than tripled for me. Plus the voice recognition for taking photos is there. I missed that.
I am hoping that it will be possible to convert android apps for tizen and that it will last not that long till this day Comes. Cause the batterylife and the better response of the system are good arguments to me for having Tizen on a featurewatch like this. Yes you read right. For me this is a Feature watch. It isn't smart at all imo.
But as soon as i am familiar with Tasker i am instantly back on Android at this state to workout the missing stuff... Android APK compatibility is a huge Thing for pushing Tizens usability an acceptance Forward imo.
I am a Developer an my thoughts About "Android or Tizen" are:
Especially your guys opinion is interesting to me.
I am a Developer and got inspired to (currently) work(ing) on
Do not Forget to mention if it is for Tizen or Android if it isn't already obvious.
Would you buy it again or do you regret?
I would buy it again. Cause in first place it was what i expected. I do not really Need 2 Smartphones i only want to do not pull out my phone so often a day. But not browsing through Music is a pain in the ass to me...i paid 200 Bucks. i think this was a ok Price. Look around what normal watches can you can pay much much for for just seeing the time. If the battery wasnt that small it is totally OK to me.
Now it's your turn ladies guys and devs.
If you do not want to answer all of that just take the ones you want and make it fat.
sorry for my english
cheers
i purchased mine after the gear two came out, specifically because i prefer android, and i was excited to try out the null rom - i installed null rom within hours of getting it in the mail. i initially had CARBONROM (aosp based) running on my s3, and i had to jump through some hoops to get it to work at all, even with a custom rom on it, and it spurred me to switch back to touchwiz (i also got a note 8.0 around the same time).
initially i just played with it all day, like killing it immediately (there's a good amount of novelty to having a fully functional computer on your wrist), then i started just using it as it was meant to be used, to check notifications and what not. ive just managed to get offline voice recognition working, as well as the google now launcher, and autovoice with google search api - i've only just gotten into tasker because, although i didn't find it too useful for just a phone, for the phone/gear combo i think a lot of cool stuff is possible.
so yeah, in a nutshell, android all day. with regular use, my battery lasts plenty long - i don't understand why anyone has a problem with one day, i have to plug all my other stuff in at night anyways, and i have outlets, chargers and cables to spare, so... i just plug it in at night. a day is fine.
