Minimize Distraction My Butt! - Android Auto General

I'm a big fan of Android, but sometimes I just have to throw my hands in the air and....

So I get in my truck, plug in my phone and head down the road... and then I see something like "Could not connect to Android Auto, please look at your phone when it is safe to do so". I pull over and grab my phone and the Android Auto app is showing me an ad for Play Music All Access. It did this twice today.
Google, sometimes you suck!

Google ads at its finest. Soon it will be like "I'm pulling you over for breakfast, please prepare password to access google wallet", or "It seems that this nearby store has item you've been searching for today with google, I have already ordered and paid for one". And peoples will be like - "thank you master google". Work, sh!t, sleep, consume.

I'm sorry, but this is what we get for demanding everything for free. No one's willing to pay a dime for software, and expect billions of dollars in development to just be...charity?

I'm sorry too, but it is the developers that have set this expectation with consumers. Look at Google Play... practically everything there is free with either ads or in app purchases (which, fortunately, now have to be disclosed in the listing). Hell, if your app is worth a damn, put a price on it! But no, they want users instead (or their app is garbage and people won't pay for it anyway).

It's tough though. If you make a great app and charge even a dollar for it, WAY more people are going to get the mediocre app for free rather than pay EVEN A DOLLAR, let alone real money. It forces developers to push the free options or just go out of business.

Possibly... but what came first the chicken or the egg? I look at apps like Tasker and Pocket Casts and they seem to be doing alright. Many others as well. Let's face it, most of what is in the Play Store is junk. I'd like to think the average Android user is becoming more sophisticated, and would prefer to spend a few bucks rather than to load their device up with a lot of junk.
But I don't profess to totally understand the market. There are still a lot of mysteries; like really well executed and supported apps that seem to have no revenue stream, i.e. ES File Explorer. So go figure. (c;

Yes !!
Blaming developers for the fact that most people don't want to pay for apps seems counter-intuitive to me.
That said, the situation is complex; Devs do not move together as a group and neither do users. We can say the same things about politicians vs the people who vote for them; each group of nations, nations, and the various levels of more local governrnents all have their own peculiarities.
Google has a major role here too. IMO Google has long benefited from free apps (and piracy) and I feel it's effectively a FEATURE of Android. Google makes 90% of their money from advertising, and a sizable chunk is from advertising within free apps. Google doesn't really seem to care if app devs make money; they care about GOOGLE making money.
That said, there ARE many mediocre devs out there and I don't think ALL devs DESERVE to be able to make a livable income from their apps.

The challenge for devs is to find an app niche that's easy enough to do, while at the same time being hard enough to copy.
I've picked some niches (FM on AOSP & Android Auto HU) that are hard to do and require difficult reverse engineering. The result is that I have almost no competition, which is nice. But the tasks are VERY hard and take a lot of time to do reasonably well.
Then there's piracy, which is a "fact of life" for devs. It's VERY easy to find almost any app with a quick Google search. The best solution I have for that is to support people well technically and make them WANT to help support me financially.
Some devs complain that "they stole my idea" and feel they can't protect their ideas. My response is that ideas are "a dime a dozen" and this is to be expected if your idea is good and easy to copy. IMO other devs are welcome to "steal my ideas" if they have the ability to make them work. So many ideas are pretty self evident/obvious; hard part is following through and making them work.

is it illegal to mod g1 and give them root

Hi to all i was just wondering if it is illegal to mod other peoples phone because i am in school and i mod peoples phone you know give them root and change boot img (like the T-mobile G1/My Touch 3G) and my dad thinks its illegal and want me to stop he also thinks that some one is going to connect it to a bomb and blame me i just want to get some other peoples views and such thanks for you feed back!-)
I'm pretty sure the "modding G1 and giving them root" police are only in Oregon, so you should be ok. Although I hear they are expanding their field offices to include Fargo, ND and North Grovesnerdale, CT so be on the lookout if you are near those areas.
In all serious, I think you are fine.....

**** good lookin out. I don't want to go to jail... haha
Ahahhhahahahaahahahahahahhahahahhahahaahahahahahhaahha! Ok, now that I got that out of my system. It is not illegal to mod an electronic device. When it becomes illegal is when you mod the device to do illegal actions, like play burnt copies of video games, or run illegal version of operating systems, etc. With that said, modding your g1/mt3g is just fine. As long as your not modding the phone to be a detonator for a nuclear bomb, your fine. Be sure to issue a disclaimer before modding anyone's phone. You don't want anyone coming back to your demanding money for a bricked phone. Just let them know that your trained in what you do, but there is still no guarantee that everything will go as planned. I've modded a couple of peoples g1's and I had them reply to an email with my personal disclaimer. Just as a back up...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SUPER FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but seriously...when I was younger I ALWAYS questioned if my actions hack/mod wise were legal......
fyi, it's now only illegal to load an old cyanogen mod with the proprietary google apps (for now, who knows what the future will bring legislation wise) .....according to google.....and probably their power lawyers.
While we are on the subject of legallity?
Hi to all i was just wondering if it is illegal to watch interspecies erotica? just keep clear of any suspicious activities.... if someone asks for your help in making something that goes boom...its more than likely an fbi agent
It's not illegal unless you distribute copyrighted software. If you are simply rooting the phone you are fine, but if you have to downgrade it you are technically redistributing software without a license to do so. Either way I wouldn't worry about them coming to knock on your door for flashing a few kids phones.
On another note. Although it may make you the cool guy in class who can mod phones, I would advise you tell them to learn on their own. Otherwise you will end up being tech support for countless idiots who don't know what to do with root. Do you really feel like spending hours walking people through a Hero rom install, or SD partitioning? Cause that's what you are asking for by doing so.
The whole point of performing such mods is for the learning experience, and expanding the capabilities of your device for personal enjoyment. It's not so people can say "look what I can do" or "my phone is cooler than yours". My opinion is: If you won't put forth the effort to read and learn how, you don't need it.
You probably spent a good bit of time learning what you have. I know it feels great to be able to show off those skills, but in the long run they will thank you for making them learn rather than doing it for them.

Mods, who do I make a new forum request to. I would like a " I have never used an Apple computer, but I hate them. I have never used an iPhone , But I hate it. I have know nothing about their products or their customer service, but they suck. " forum.
Just so we can consolidate the hundreds of " I hate Apple threads " here at XDA. Or why doesn't XDA just fire up their iphone-developers domain and we can stick them all there.
Apple is a great company, I have been using Apple/Macs for 30 years without a crash or hitch. I have 5 Macs, 2 iPods and an iPhone yet unlike most Windows users I don't feel the overwhelming need to bash M$ every chance.

Most of us have a complex that makes us not WANT to like them. So we ride out the put-downs that make us feel better about our loyalty. I don't want to like the Jonas Brothers, so I don't listen to them, turn them off whenever they come on, and make fun of those that like them. I'm sure that if I listened to all of their music, I'd fine at least ONE song I'd like, but then again, I'm also not interested in buying a dozen d*ldos to put up my a** either.

I'm not laughing at you, but I wouldn't think it's a good idea. A large display for sensory needs is different than a large interface for sensory needs. Make the display on the floor and the interface on a 13" panel on the wall, then you have a nice setup.

Well yes, I knew it wouldn't work directly, hence why I said it would need to be designed differently, but yes your right
Being an MS person and bashing Apple (or vice versa) makes you feel like you are part of a community, and that people sitting on the fence will just get caught in the crossfire and drawn in at some point anyway.
I personally think that Apple products will continue to become more ridiculous. The iPad is pointless in my opinion. Tablet PCs aren't popular anyway. Next thing they'll probably do is give the iPad some kind of phone functionality!
Aesthetically Apple wins hands down I think, because they look so awesome. Although saying that there are some Android phones that look really really nice, so maybe its a sign that Apple may be threatened in the looks department!

Scary....device used by police can scan your cellphone

I hope our Vibrants aren't one of the 3000 that can be scanned by this!

After briefly searching the manufacturers website it does look like our phone is on the list..... However, looks like the only way they can suck out the data (pictures, SMS, sim contents, browser cache, etc) is via a cable. (not wirelessly like some other phones)

Their brochure even says they can retrieve deleted information and geo stats of where you have been!
We don't do this in my city or in any of my neighboring cities.
It is a violation of the 4th admendment.
What would be the point of this?
I fail to see how they would benefit. Especially when it may not hold up in court.

Some of these claims sound a bit like "marketing speak".
Not all the things it claims to do will work on all devices. I reckon that one device might support the dumping of GPS stuff (iPhone perhaps given the recent news headlines? ) (btw I'm joking about the iPhone).
all phones sold after ~2002 must be able to do it in compliance with the freedom of information act introduced in 2001

If you willingly give up your phone to be scanned, even if you got nothing to hide, you've waivered your 4th Amendment Rights. Any and all information can and will be used against you as I have yet to meet a cop who didn't treat the average citizen as guilty till proven guilty. Accessing your phone data is like data mining your facebook page and more looking for anything suspicious about your character which could give them "probable cause" for other things. Got pics of you and your friends partying? Now they have a reason to administer the drunk driver test and/or a breathalizer. Got pics of you and your dad hunting? Now they're going to detain you and search you car for guns (they'd do that here in NJ). Your gps data shows you doing 5 or 10mph over the speed limit? Instant speeding ticket. Time stamps on your SMS messages coincide while you where driving (even if you had a passanger using your phone its still your phone) instant moving violation.
That's the whole point to this, to find probable cause in order to convict people of crimes. There is only two ways to thwart this: do not consent to a warrentless search and keep your data encrypted to protect yourself from a forced warrentless search.

Not really. (at least in New Jersey) if you have that point of view there is good reason for it. In some of the quieter counties (Sussex, Warren ect) the cops actually have been known to do this kind of stuff. In Hudson county (where I live) it's less likely but not unheard of.

I feel sorry for our friends across the pond. The police state of America is becoming less like the land of the free and more like an Orwellian novel with every day that passes.
Ben Franklin wrote, "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."
I'm not originally from the US but based on what I'm seeing today, policemen here are way better than my previous home. In my previous country it's all about money, when you have a violation about traffic they'll get money from you and put it directly to their pockets.
If you don't give them money they'll found a way to get you arrested, the worst thing that they can do is secretly put prohibited drugs inside your car without you knowing it then accuse you with that. A very sad thing but it is true, good thing is I now live in the US.

get anything in your phone that can transmit wireless and zap it with a tazer

BlackBerry is a horrible company that sells out its users

the London riots, BlackBerry offered all blackberry user's GPS logs to the police, so that they could track who was near the riots, so they could turn them over to the police. what a HUGE invasion of privacy, selling out its loyal customers like that..
im sure some of you will say its for a greater good, bull****, first of all this information will only tell you who was near the riot, not who was involved, so lots of innocents will be prosecuted. secondly, theres never a reason good enough that anyone should willingly give up their privacy to the government.
fortunately for people who want to protect their rights, TeaMp0isoN hacked BlackBerry's website, telling them if they do sellout users information to the police, BlackBerry will release all BlackBerry's higher up's information to the public. a very fair deal, and justice done by TeaMp0isoN. TeaMp0isoN also pointed out, the police cant even help themselves right now, so BlackBerry should not look to the police to protect them if they choose to sell out their users.
what are your guys thoughts on this?

good thing too
also note that facebook and twitter did as well
If you think they will use gps location to prosecute...you are a fool. It will be used for gathering witnesses and information. As far as rights go, it is not a violation of rights. Your rights stop where anothers begin. So you do not have the right to say or do whatever you want if it effects someone elses rights. The police should shoot the rioters on site.
Handing over the gps position is kind of silly unless they are only using it for predictive measures to see where a lot of them are gathered. But even then unless it is cross referenced with messages that suggest a target near the gps position its only an invasion of privacy.
If anything, what bb should have done was suspend the bbm service in the uk area to break the organization of the riots. That should give the police the edge they may need. Any service lost could be either refunded in money or some sort of compensation.
I understand the youth in the uk are fed up with in justice but this method kinda only hurts them in the future. That being said how else do you get the politicians attention for positive change? A lot kf riots are happening all over the place ever since the economic down turn in the states. The states still has somd way to fall so we should be expecting more riots as the riots continue to move to the west.

Judging by the lasted news, it's just another "soap bubble"
Up until last week I hadn't even heard of it. Now I certainly will not use it...
never heard about it.....
NO! Reason: As I could observe, again and again hacks and other problems. A rather obscure thing.
As I have read in the past:
Market place Bitomat had to place themselves to the sale, because they had lost the access to 17.000 Bitcoins.
MyBitcoin had give up after a hacker attack, whereby more than 78,000 Bitcoins disappeared.
In 2012 had to stop the market place Bitfloor temporarily the activities, because by a hacker attack 24,000 Bitcoins were stolen.
And so forth ...
Ahhhh the "silk roads" favorite currency

Too much of a hassle. Plus anything I would buy with them I can probably find IRL.
I used to. Sold it on Tuesday when it was $170. Got $1700. Do the Math.
The reason I sold it is simple. I may sound like a Hipster but now Bitcoin has become huge and mainstream and that my local news channels talk about it, people would start to try it and the price would crash. Upon this prediction, I sold the coins. And like I predicted, the stock crashed and the people on reddit all got paranoid. Job Well Done.
Nope, never have and I hope I'll never have to. My friend used to, but gave up because of how ridiculous the whole process was.
Im bitcoin mining! Hoping to strike it rich!

Yes I use cryptocurrencies (BTC LTC NMC etc..)
First, anyone saying Bitcoin has been compromised is flat out wrong, and either mis-, or (more likely) under informed.
Saying Bitcoin has been hacked is the equivalent to saying "I use an MS operating system and visited a shady website, and subsequently became infected with malware in the form of a key-logger. The owner of the malware then used the logger to gain access to my bank account. Clearly my bank has been compromised."
What has not happened is bitcoin being compromised. What has happened are DDoS attacks and computers that hold bitcoin wallets being compromised. This is mitigatable by simply storing your wallet on a USB stick or some other off-line medium, you cannot hack what is not plugged in.
Bitcoin uses SHA-256 encryption that, has not been compromised, and even if it were 512 or 1024 etc.. could be easily implemented, which are orders of magnitude harder to decrypt. Bitcoin did not invent the security it simply implemented it in a new an unusual way. If security is an issue take a look at LiteCoin, it's security is impressive to say the least.
Second, my grandmother (God rest her soul) never used email, but she did write letters. Bitcoin may not be the end all solution, but it's the beginning of what will be to currency as email was to letters and the web is to newspapers. Did you use BBS before the internet took off? I did. It wasn't the best solution, just the best one we had at the time. Bitcoin is an experiment read the whitepaper released by Satoshi Nakamoto.
Yes, the market is volitle, and rightfully so it is new, and the attacks against it are a good thing, as they are strengthening it. You wouldn't want a lock that had never been tested.
I've used it to buy all manner of things, (food, clothes, TV, computers) and I mined most of the coins I currently hold.
I'm not saying use it, but if your going to knock it, at least know what your talking about. I'm someone that likes to use bleeding edge tech, and am aware I may be burned by doing so. This one technology has allowed me to enjoy other tech devices, as I could not afford them without the profit I've made mining.
I do wish it was implemented on these forums, as I would tip posts and use it to make purchases on this site. Yes you do have PayPal, and I've got a rotary phone but I'm not going to use that anymore either.
Funny reading this thread of all the losers who put down bitcoin because they know nothing about it. I am making a fortune off it! These posters might want to open their eyes and look again.

I mine Bitcoins and use them to buy Lindens. I use an old Acer laptop that uses very little power, running Mint. This is not a real good way to make money. I do it mostly for fun.
Bitcoin is now trading at $320. Has anyone else taken a second look? I really believe these are about to go ballistic because now the entire world is starting to catch on. Right now, China is buying up about twice as many as the US. As more countries adopt the bitcoin as a true value currency you are going to see exponential growth. Curious to hear other people opinions.
