I spent a good bit of the day today researching this issue, but i have run into a brick wall - please help me out if you have any ideas.
The issue is that i can't access my gmail account via messaging on my at&t tilt except via a WIFI connection. If my phone is hitting my local wireless router i can send/receive fine, if my phone is hitting 3G, Edge, or HSDPA i receive 'Error Synchronizing" - "Cannot connect with current connection settings".
So, i read as much as i could on this issue and found a few common suggestions - all of which i have tried with no avail.
1) When i click settings -> advanced -> select networks - both are now set to MEdia Net ("programs that.. connect to the internet" and "programs that.. connect to a private network")
2) I have unchecked "This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet" in my MEdia Net proxy settings
3) I have tried removeHiddenProxy4CWS_0522.cab and checked the registry setting as listed here to ensure that EnableAutoDetect is set to 1
4) I have set "network connection" under advanced in my gmail settings to both "The Internet" and "MEdia Net" with the same results
5) I do have pop3 enabled on my gmail account (it works fine on the phone when connecting via WIFI)
6) I have tried both via pop3 and imap settings for my gmail account setup
7) The connection being used is set to wap.cingular (not isp.cingular)
Please keep in mind that this gmail account works perfectly fine in messaging so long as i am connected to a local wireless router, it is only when going through AT&T's network that it does not work.
Is there any chance that AT&T has changed how they are forcing the use of their proxy? Am i wrong to assume i should be able to download my gmail through their network?
(p.s. thanks for any insight or help you might provide, i have managed to get my tilt flashed with dutty's latest release as well as my radio flashed, but i am having no luck with this issue)
note: during these issues with gmail, my live.com email was working successfully - you can always setup forwarding on your gmail account for a temporary solution
In your isp settings does it say "isp.cingular" or "wap.cingular". I had the same problem until i changed it to "wap.cingular". When it fails to connect it pops up a bubble window with a warning that it failed. Click settings, isp settings, next until you get to the setting that says isp.cingular. This is all granting that you're in the USA.
Problem confirmed for me as well. Cannot connect to gmail via the messaging app unless connected to wifi. I'm using MediaNet connection using wap.cingular when not connected to wifi.

yes, mine is set to wap.cingular.. i switched everything to use the MEdia Net connection (not the My ISP one) - which was already set to wap.cingular.. thanks for the suggestion though, i left it out of my list - if anything this can be a consolidated spot for common causes.
FYI, it actually started working on its own since my initial post (after not having worked all day).. the only things i have done tonight are the following:
1) did a send/receive via a WIFI connection on the gmail account
2) setup outlook 2007 on my PC and synched my contacts/notes/email
3) upgraded my radio from default .11 to .17 (perhaps .11 radio restricts proxy settings?) (*soft reset - may have played a role?)
i wish i had tested it between each of these steps, but i wasn't really doing these things to try and fix the gmail issue.. hopefully it will stay working
Here's a silly question - had you tried simply soft-resetting the phone? I had the same problem for a bit, was absolutely driving me nuts, and all it took was a soft reset to get it to connect and work fine ever since. Maybe for future reference...

not a silly question.. i had tried resetting somewhere amongst my attempts during the day with no avail, but obviously i reset during flashing the radio rom, so who knows, maybe that did play a factor.
all i know is it is still working today from work, so that is a big plus.

try everything in the list, and try a soft reset as well.. if that doesn't do it you may want to try and update your radio rom to .17 since you are on .11 as i was..
I had the same problem and had to enable SSL for incoming and outgoing mail under the advanced settings in the Outgoing mail server setup page. Once I did that everything has worked perfect since then.
Hope it solves your problem aswell.
I've never had an issue with Gmail and wap.cingular...except HTML messages still not working.
The SSL thing is most likely it. If you read google's instructions for setting up the account it clearly states that ssl with authentication has to be enabled.
Gmail
For those having issues with Gmail, has anyone looked into Mobipush? This service allows you to use your device's Direct Push Technology to get your Gmail sent to your device in real-time. I had previously mentioned this in another thread. All you have to do is turn on POP or IMAP access in your Gmail settings and setup your device as per the instructions on Mobipush's site. I've been using the service and it seems to work great...and did I mention its free?
here's the link...

I use Java for my Gmail account its very nice and fast with 3G. I have never tried setting it up on an account inthe built in Messaging App. I use Pocket MSN for my primary Hotmail account. Just download the Gmail IMAP software from Google and try it out and see what you think.

i had the same problem with bellsouth as my email provider when using outlook email but i got it to work on xpressmail - i still dont know what was wrong...
Same problem, I think
Gmail app loads and maybe 1kb comes down but then after a short time it errors saying that it needs a data connection and to look at the FAQ. This only started happening after upgrading to ATT ROM AKU 0.4.4. Worked on my stock ATT TILT no problems.
mobiPush looks good. I use Seven's extended beta. http://community.seven.com/forum/main.php They now support Gmail IMAP. It works great, and I like how it fixes Gmail's imap problems. I'll have to check out mobiPush to compare the two.
Funny, I was able to get G-mail to work fine on my first Tilt and I got the new one (red light of death issue) and now my G-mail won't work...

I had same problem "Error Synchronizing" - "Cannot connect with current connection settings"." - Problem is activesync getting in a twist. Go into connection manager and turn off activesync, or connect to PC and then disconnect.

Tried setting up gmail in Messaging App
I tried to set up my gmail account too, just to see. I set up gmail pop3 at gmail settings. I went through messaging App and set up incoming with
pop.gmail.com:995 and outgoing smtp.gmail.com:465 Nothing seemed to work, says unable to connect with current settings. A few have already said that it worked fine under their messaging app. What settings are you using if you have it working? Please post your incoming and outgoing settings please.
Thanks, Kevin
I had this when I upgraded to Dutty's new rom, and I was panicking like mad. I tried everything - but nothing worked apart from wifi sync - so I went to bed. When I got up I tried to sync and worked right away...
So I dunno if you've been hard at work at this non stop - best thing to do is seemingly to let it settle, same thing happened for me when I upgraded again to V3 Dutty's (which is awesome by the way) - gmail started working after a little while (this time I did nothing)
Hello,
Recently purchased unlimited data plan on Vodafone UK, set up 3 email accounts straight away, one personal POP3 email, Yahoo! on POP3 and then windows live
Everything working fine and dandy until today when the windows live auto dials the connection and synchronises fine.
Yahoo and my other POP3 do not dial the connection and cannot connect to GPRS or 3G. It just comes up with error synchronising at the bottom and then a pop up balloon saying cannot connect with current config
any ideas?
Should have looked bout 10 posts down!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=383962
Yahoo has changed thier POP service.....Yes they charge now.....everything else you will need is in the thread I provided.
Enjoy!
but i have been using pop email on yahoo for a few weeks now with no problem.. but anyways that isnt the problem.
The major problem appears to be that outlook is not connecting to even start sending or recieving emails.. I will now try to delete the connection then set it up again. What i dont get is why other web apps and htc weather connects and downloads fine.
Hard reset sorted it out (so far it seems to be working anyway!!)
OK, so this problem I think is new since I flashed my ROM to 1.93.
I have 2 email accounts. Work email is on an exchange server and personal IMAP email. I can send emails through my work account but not through my personal account.
The settings for my personal account are correct and the SMTP server allows connections through any port, so that isnt an issue. Does anyone have any idea? I have no problems using this IMAP account anywhere else.
Thanks
I had the same problem when connecting via my t-mobile hsdpa connection. Thing is it worked fine over wifi! If this is the same for you, try disabling the 'enable proxy server' option in your networks internet connection settings, that worked for me!
If the disabling proxy setting option does not work ensure the personal email is connection though you operators connection.
Thanks for both the suggestions.
I did not have the proxy setting disabled and I also have checked that the connection is through my operators connection.
Still no joy though!
Any more ideas?
outgoing mailserver
The outgoing mailserver from your provider doesn't wrk with any connection other than the one from the provider itself. (like so many providers) If you use wifi at home you are connected with your provider and outgoing e-mail will work fine. Try to find a free e-mail provider that supports the outgoing e-mail server on any connection. For example www.phreaker.net. Their outgoing e-mail (and incoming) will do the job on your phone. I'm using a vodafone e-mail account, works 4 me, incoming and outgoing. I just use it to send e-mail when i'm on holiday.
If your outgoing server needs SSL, you have to go into Advanced Settings and enable it manually as well as specifying the connection to use for outgoing emails.
Well, I have deleted the account and set it up again and it is working once more. I use an SMTP server that accepts connections from any network so that was fine. One thing I have noticed is that to send immediately, I have to do both a send and receive, but the receive happens first. Is there any way of being able to just send immediately?
So, I had the same issue rear its ugly head again!
After some more searching, found this.

Seems to be the answer!
Hi all,
My pop3 email account uses port 587 for smtp settings. 4 days ago my outgoing emails started accumulating.
A look at my email server revealed that my Droid 4 in fact is connecting to the server but times out within a second or two.
For the past 4 years I've been using these settings and never had issues. All of a sudden this week I kept getting "cannot connect to server" when testing my Outgoing Mail Settings on my Droid.
My pc uses the same settings and all is fine. I've loaded my email accounts on other Android devices and it works like a charm.
Something happened with my device that is causing it to time out.....maybe an app issue, maybe my Verizon carrier.
Point is I can't figure it out.
For the time being I'm using another smtp account for outgoing emails but this can't be a permanent solution.
Any ideas why this is happening??
Thanks
B
Hi All!
I have a very strange situation and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I am using BlueMail to connect to my work email via exchange. When I am on WiFi everything works great. The strange behavior starts when I switch over to mobile data.
When I am on mobile data I can't connect to the exchange server to read email. I am notified of any new emails. I see who they are from and the subject but I get a connection failed error any time I try to read the email. I've even gone into the settings to try and test the connection and on mobile data that connections fails every time. So I tried a few things:
1. I tried another email client. In this case I tried the GMAIL app and the Outlook app that is in the Play store. Once again both can connect on WiFi but not on mobile data.
2. I tried hotspotting my phone and then trying to connect via my laptop. I was not able to connect to the exchange server over my hotspot using mobile data.
3. I tried using my VPN service on my OP3T over mobile data. Then I tried connecting to Exchange. This works!
My carrier is T-Mobile. I am wondering if they are somehow blocking exchange access. Has anyone on T-Mobile experienced something similar?
That is quite interesting. From the sounds of it, yes something is delimiting data transfer. The thing is Exchange ActiveSync works over port 443 as do most https websites. As that data is encrypted from the server side to your client device, T-mobile would have no way to say you have new mails but not actually show you the mail as the encrypted traffic would disallow that. Just for that little fact, it sounds like this might be something Exchange side and you are in conflict with a policy on the server.
As VPN would make Exchange think you are on the local network, that may be why it works in that instance. as it suddenly find you in conformance with policy.
As to what that policy may be to lock you out, I can not think of an out of box Exchange rule that would do that. Does your company utilize an MDM servicing application? If you are rooted, and they are enforcing a block on rooted devices, that could be a cause.
When I connect over VPN I'm not connecting to work. I'm connecting to a PIA server in the US. Also when I'm connecting over WiFi I'm connecting from any WiFi (including my home WiFi). WiFi works 100% of the time.
You could be right in that the issue could be on the exchange server but I'm using the same device over WiFi and over VPN. If there is an issue with root policy on the exchange server side one would think I'd have the issue every time I try to connect. That being said I know nothing about exchange nor my employer's policy.
It's certainly an interesting issue. I have a work around but I'd like to understand what is going on.
I am still suspecting T-Mobile somehow. My coworker (who is on AT&T) can connect using mobile data on his iPhone. He didn't do anything special or talk to IT about the policy. Anyone here checking an exchange account on their 3T on T-Mobile?

I am actually using Exchange Activesync myself over T-Mobile. Had it on Oxygen OS, CM 13/14, and now I'm on RR.
Issue free.
Best of luck on this. Very interested to see what the issue may be (as you may have guessed, I'm one of the exchange admins)
