[Q] nexus one and gingerbread - past and future?

if gingerbread is the future of android devices, it suppose to support hardware capabilities that may not be on the nexus that has been around for a while.
i really wanted to buy a nexus, but it seems that when android 3.0 is out - it should be followed by high end devices by HTC and others.
i really don't know what to do here...
gingerbread is said to launch mid november - not a long time to hold off.
but hey, what do think? wait or buy nexus now?

That is Exactly what I am doing! The desire HD looks wonderful, but i think There will be a VERY nice phone coming on T mobile with new gingerbread already there around Christmas....Just my guess
It seems T mobile and Google have some sort of special deal when it comes to android, like getting stock android phones.....and there MUST be a stock gingerbread phone coming soon!

First, Gingerbread will run fine on a N1. Second, no matter when you buy a phone in a couple months another one will come out that is even better. The N1 has an awesome modding scene though.

nobody know that for sure...the minimal requirements may suit the N1 but it may lack the ability to perform certain tasks. we've seen it happen with other phones.

true for most cases. to me nexus is different from others by design. that phone feels right. i really couldn't care less about all these samsungs or motorolas that are out there. and other htc devices seem too big like the desire HD that was mentioned.
basicly, the world need a NEXUS TWO!

So you think Google will develop an OS using their development phone, but not all features of the OS will work on the phone they developed it on? I highly doubt that. Google debunked the minimum requirements roomer for Gingerbread, that was nothing but a site trying to get traffic. Do a little thinking on the subject.
If I were getting a new phone soon though, I would wait till the next gen ones come out. I do love my Nexus though!

none the less, why shouldn't gingerbread allow "facetime like" video service for capable devices? the technology for that is in the wild. that is only one example. i am sure there are more features just like that.
at this point, maybe it would be smarter to wait.

Whether or not Gingerbread includes a facetime like option is irrelevant to how it will run on the N1. Obviously any phone without a front-facing camera will not be able to do something like facetime. Gingerbread itself will run just fine on the N1. Without going into any technical reasons, just think of this. Of all the Android phones out there right now, the top ones are all in the general vicinity of the N1 in performance. If Gingerbread wouldn't run on the N1, then you cut out these phones too which means only as-yet-unreleased phones would run Gingerbread. So on what basis are you questioning it?
You should probably wait though since you don't seem sure about the N1. The only guarantee you can have is that in a few months from now an even better phone will be released. And then a few months from that once again, and repeat... Dual core snapdragons will start finding their way into phones at some point soon. If you're not rushed then just wait and see what comes out.

Should I Get a Droid?

Hi guys(and girls), in 2011, should I get an original Droid? If I bought one it would be my first android phone, i've flashed a custom rom on a windows phone before but i don't know how to root yet, but would it be good for me to get a Droid now? With the newer phones that are out?

Honestly just get a newer and better phone for free. There are many free phones out there that are better hardware and software wise like the inspire 4g(which I have)

I'll pass on a contract.

google is developing right on the nexus phones. i would by one of these. and not a doird again.

If I was buying my first Android right now (I bought the Milestone in September of '10) I might look at the Nexus one. I think Amazon has it for around $280, new. The screen size is the same but I think it's a little faster and is obviously better supported.

Consider buying a device with more RAM than droid.
Also you should answer a question, whether you are confortable with touchscreen virtual keyboard or not - I'm not, so I took Milestone

I would consider a keyboardless device ie EVO/HD2/Thunderbolt(big screens), my sister had a Cliq XT at one time and i tried texting on that, my thumbs were kind of big for the buttons?

Well guys, I got a Droid X today.

I've had my Droid for 2 years now and it's been a great device. The development community has been great and there are still a lot of good ROM a currently being developed and supported for it.
While it might not have the most memory, most apps can be pushed to SD. The processor overclocks to 1g (and usually even higher), so it can still match the quadrant scores of many newer phones.
If the price is right, and you want to experiment with rooting and flashing ROMs, not many other phones have as much community support and it's next to impossible to brick a Droid.

I have my Droid (Milestone, actually) for more than a year now and can't say anything bad about the device itself. When it comes down to Motorola, we're talking about a different sport
Motorola's update policy had me waiting for FroYo for months and when it came out, it was a beta-versions, months old that gave a lot of people WLAN-problems. Also the use of the bootloader is a real pain.
If you're willing to install a custom ROM, you're fine, there are good ones out there (I'm using FroyoMOD), but due to the company's update (and bootloader) policy, my next device won't be a Motorola.

[Q] Other OS?

I know my moto x android version works flawlesly out of the box with some xposed mods just to personalize it, but today I decided to check the development section to see if there are some cool and interesting things to flash.
To my surprise I haven't seen much action there, I would have expected some port of firefox os or at least ubuntu (like there was for the Samsung Galaxy SIII) why is that? I'm not a developer so unfortunately I lack the knowledge to do something like that or I would.
Are there really no moto x owners wanting to try some (probably broken ) alternative OSes?

If you lack the knowledge, learn lol.. Not all of the Moto x can get an unlocked bootloader so development is restricted or limited to a certain extent for some devices like the Verizon Moto X or the ATT version . But even though that's no excuse, most people prefer stock and decide not to go through the hassle of porting a different OS. Just my opinion. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.

Lack of interest, most likely. Firefox OS is a little pointless on devices with the hardware spec to run Android without batting an eyelash. As for Ubuntu Touch, there are a lot of devices not seeing it just due to a lack of interest in the OS itself from a lot of people (sadly). Only the most popular devices are likely to see ports of it.
That being said, I'd love to see Ubuntu Touch on Moto X, it's one of a few reasons I originally considered getting a Nexus 5 when i decided to get my Moto X.

Any non stock based ROMs we have still have major issues after a year.....can you imagine the issues with anything out of the ordinary like Ubuntu, Miui and other very different systems.
The X is just not a phone for developers or flashaholics. Its best run stock, (or stock based roms) maybe with Xposed for extra features. No one wants to lose their moto features either, and you only will have those on stock or stock based ROMs.
Things may change after the X stops getting updates. You may see more development then.

I have always wanted to run Ubuntu touch. I am trying to get it to work on my Samsung note pro but the selinux enforcement is a road block.

There's definitely a strong incentive to stay stock on the X.....but it didn't cure me unfortunately. I gave it to my wife, got an N5, installed multirom and have 4 ROMs installed on it as we speak. Lol

ive been eyeing swappa listings for 2013 nexus 7s just to run Ubuntu touch, firefox and Android L preview.

What's up with development for this phone?

Now, don't get the wrong idea. I'm not asking or demanding for ROMs or what have you. More like where are the developers. Are people not digging this phone and refusing to move over to it? Or is this thing off to a really slow start?
Again, I'm not asking for ETA, ROMs, mods, anything of that sort. Just wondering what the state of the g920t is in the developer realm.
If there is anything I would LOVE an ETA for or any information on for that matter is Cyanogenmod 12 lol I'm a CM head. Ran it exclusively on my S4 so I feel very out of place being stuck on Touchwiz. Although I must admit it's grown on me and is worlds better than past versions.

The development on the aosp side of things has been really quiet, probably because they don't want to get peoples' hopes up. If you bought this device expecting to get cm12, it might not be a realistic expectation

Completely understandable. And yea I did buy this phone expecting CM12. I've owned every Galaxy S phone except the 3 and 5 and had CM on every one of them. What I didn't know was the dislike for Exynos that exists among developers.
Hopefully this will change but you know what, Touchwiz is good enough to hold me over If nothing happens by the time jump comes back around I'll most likely drop this phone and jump over to the HTC One. Yes I love AOSP that much lol If it weren't for the Nexus 6 being so damn huge i'd be on that right now.

It's because exynos isn't open source, which gives the developers nothing to go on so they have to reverse engineer everything. It's not about hate, it's about documentation

If you were surprised about the lack of Exynos dev support, then you obviously did not do your homework before buying. Yes, there have been prior Exynos devices that (eventually) got CM, but it took many months of hard work and reverse engineering. You should never EVER buy a Samsung device with the expectation of having CM on it later (especially if it has Exynos). Die hard CM fans should stick with Nexus because those devices will always be the first to get CM. If you can't stand Touchwiz or any of the TW-based custom roms that are available, then you might as well sell your S6 now while you can get the most money for it.

The new Nexus coming out in November looks promising. Suppose to come in 2 sizes by 2 different makesr, one size I'm interested in is the smaller 5.4" model. I'll keep this S6 till then and Jump when the Nexus 5 2015 is available.

Being a CM fan too, i think this device has a lot of potential with touchwiz based rom. Many contributors are working hard to bring fixes where samsung failed to deliver!

Same here. I was planning to get the OnePlus Two, but not if it has SD810. I'll wait for a small Nexus.

Yes I made this clear above. I've never owned an Exynos device, so I made the leap assuming it would have CM support just like every other Galaxy S I've owned. Also I am a die hard AOSP fan but I've always preferred Galaxy S features like SAMOLED and external SD so I've always gotten a GS and called it a day. As I said earlier, the Nexus 6 is just too large so that's out of the question.

I can understand your hesitation after the G2x but LG has come a long way. They still have a horrid UI but that's why we have custom ROMs. They still have snapdragon, as well. Not to mention some amazing hardware. Right up there with any other manufacturer (yes even considering their plastic back version...who doesn't use a case anyway) That all being said...I'm still getting the next Nexus lol LG and Sammy have some incredible features that aren't available in CM but stock Android is just too smooth

The only change is LG released unlock bootloader tool for int'l non-carrier versions only.
So given that, i think we are on the best option (and i'm saying that coming from a Note 4)

I think there are Fans who just like CM or AOSP because of the look and feel aspect of stock. I can understand, but as stated in a number of statements here, there are some awesome aspects and hardware features with stock TW that will indeed be lost CM or AOSP - Big example are camara features to name one.
Now if you follow the theme section you will see there is a way to get stock material look - now mix it with Nova launcher you are GOLDEN..it will hold me over...

I reckon that android is not the future (since not much being done on it for the flex) but in fact windows 10 mobile.
Sounds crazy but if u look at it maybe it isn't:
The Xiaomi mi4 is a snapdragon 800 n that is one of the very very few phones atm that can run android or win10m.
Microsoft are big and experienced enough that I wouldn't be surprised if they released a universal ROM that works on multiple different kinds of systems ala much like normal windows can (Which is part of my expanded theory what they'll do to really penetrate the market).
Is there any hope in my theory? Lol

Anyone agree with me? Cmon I'm trying to bring hope to our beloved phone. Heh.

Of course man! I am unaware of cell phone getting a newer rom skipping various version of android but as we say theres always a first time for everything even though could be the last one we see. I mean this phone still pretty powerful though. D800 under hood, 2gigs starts to be n issue but who cares not every body uses 70 to 100 apps, plus we install roms specially to get the most out our devices! What is it?? What is making this premiun devices not to get enough android development!!??

you are talking about a mobile phone that was completely abandoned by LG but had strong potential, i am literally still stuck at android 4.2.2 on this phone and i can tell you it is absolutely terrible , i am probably buying a letv 1 pro instead, basically my point is that this phone is dead and un supported by any one frankly
