I have both the S4 and the One in front of me and one of them is going back by tonight. Still torn between the two, whatever, but there is one factor that can make my decision a lot easier. I never keep a stock rom on any phone; I prefer a stock Android experience with some of the extras included in ROMs such as PA and AOKP. From what I am hearing now, flashing non-Sense ROMs on the One takes away almost all of the bells and whistles of owning the device, like BoomSound (average audio quality) and camera quality (at least we have 13 megapixels to compensate in the S4).
For those of you who have flashed some of these early builds, how is it working for you? Do you find using the phone to not be as enjoyable as it was stock?

I flashed PA and CM and 30 minutes later i went back to stock. Battery life on any aosp based rom for me has been terrible and all the features of the stock ROM are awesome. sound quality also deteriorated and got reduced volume on the aosp roms. Also gaming. NOTHING lags on stock rom but on PA and CM games lag like crazy. graphics benchmarks get reduced to like Adreno 225 level... And then since they are still alphas there are a lot of bugs and they aren't really stable. I would go with the HTC One instead of the SGS4 because of how sexy the damn thing is. also how sense is much more tuned and less cluttered up like touchwiz is.

Thanks for the input. I know, the One is just too sexy, but I gotta actually enjoy using it. If the functionality is practically the same as the S4 after flashing a stock rom, I might as well keep the S4. As far as the TouchWiz vs. Sense argument goes, it is irrelevant to me since I would not be keeping either one as soon as there are some stable stock builds available.
Yeah, in your case just keep the S4.
Flash Trickdroid ROM, it's a custom ROM which is also sense based and has good if not better battery life than stock ROM and certainly better than AOSP.
I'm a fan of AOSP ROM's but for the most part the battery life isn't good so I'll stick with Trickdroid

Why do people rely on strangers to tell them what they like? I got both of them, played with them, and ended up selling the s4. Reminded me too much of the s3.

This isn't about people telling me what they like really. I'm simply asking about their experiences thus far with their phone and flashing roms. Where else would I turn for advice? Also, if you read the OP I wasn't asking which device you liked more and which one you returned.

I was in the same boat but stuck with the HTC One. I like it's feel in my hand a lot more which is a big thing for me, comfort>sexy, but both?! Also a lot of devs seem to be including sense in their roms letting us get Zoe+addons from aftermarket roms which keeps the camera viable. I think we'll see more interesting development on the One than on the S4 simply because devs will want to port/improve those features into their roms.

I ran the stock rom for 2 weeks before flashing a custom ROM. I didn't have any sluggish performance with stock, but I do like the custom rom better. I removed all the t-mobile junk. So if anything I got a performance increase.
I wouldn't return this phone, I love it.
Try the Maximus7 6.0 rom.
I came from a TF300 that was fing slow and constant force closes because of the slow IO in it. But it was a stock experience.
I thought I would hate this 'sense'. I like it. I do use a Nova Launcher and I removed the cruft.

Maybe it's me getting older and needing a phone for business and not a toy to tinker with. The one gave me more features and the feel of it in my hand was better. Why not go with something with better features and reliability than with something that has more roms to flash? That's my question to op. Hopefully you can get both with whatever you decide to go with.

Yeah id say Trickdroid is probably the best ROM overall right now for this one, but the choice is yours, if your prepared to sacrifice some battery life for extra features then no problems.
I'm running AOSP on my Nexus 7 and have been for months now but I'm quite content with Trickdroid on my One.
As a ROM addict, both of these phones will easily keep you happy.
However, asking in this forum will yield bias responses. Just like if you were to ask this in the S4 forum, you'll get the majority of answers saying to stick with the S4.

Yeah, of course. Just thought it would be better to get insight from those who have actually had experience with these ROMs. Both communities do seem like they are going to have a load of new things to flash and play with within the next few months.
Sense has gotten to the point (for me), that its features far outweigh anything aosp or aokp offer. Aosp advantage used to be that it was quicker and smoother with more customizations...not the case at all now. I would go as far to say that you actually lose more useful features than you gain by going pure android. I do understand the addiction though...I've had it for years...haha

Up top, this isn't a "best ROM" or "what should I run" sort of thread. It's also a topic that can easily provoke rage so please don't think that I'm trying to convince anyone of one thing or another. This is just me being curious.
After starting with Android a few years ago, I've noticed an increasing amount of "flashing fatigue" setting in lately. Sure, I'll root (because I have a lot of utility apps that require root), but the appeal of custom ROMs is fading fast. The Google Edition port was my latest (and longest standing) ROM for my One, and before that I'd tried one or two stock-derivative ROMs (save one bad AOSP experience back when we had sleep of death going on). I'm back to stock now, and trying a "fuller" experience (no launcher replacement, etc.-- minus root, again, for some XPosed tweaks like disabling the NFC icon).
This phone's now been out a while, so I'm curious: how many of you have "settled down" so to speak on one side or the other?
The first Android I owned was an Epic 4G and then Epic 4G Touch. Both left a ton to be deaired from a software standpoint and I easily flashed 3 dozen or more different roms between those two phones.
Flash forward to the HTC One and I've never felt the need to leave the stock ROM. I do use the Google Experience Launcher and have replaces some of the stock apps with better versions from 3rd party devs, but honestly I don't really see a point. Performance, battery life and functionality all seem to have hit a perfect balance with this phone. And like you suggested, the fatigue of flashing is really heavy these days especially since I'm not looking to fix a flaw or add a feature. Although once a working KitKat ROM hits us I will probably root and flash just to get a feel. Though admittedly I've always found the bone stock look of Android to be lacking visually.

The very first phone I flashed over to a custom firmware was the LG G2X from T-Mobile. The android experience on that phone was very tasteless and bloated. Support from LG was less than non-existent. I found that I couldn't really stand using the phone on stock so I flashed a few different roms until I landed on eaglesblood. Although there was a lot broken on eaglesblood, I found it an upgrade to stock. Fast forward like Adam described and I have been on the HTC One for nearly 6 months. In that time I have flashed perhaps a few custom roms. In the end, I reverted back to stock. The One is a solid phone from both a software and hardware stand-point. I find myself checking my BlinkFeed a few times an hour and if I am on a senseless ROM I feel lost without it.
Tl;dr I have no need to ever leave stock. Stock rooted is good enough for me.

I've been running RageOne and have found it to be more than enough from what I need for my HTC one
Same here. I started with Hero, then Evo Shift, Evo 3D, Evo 4G LTE and now The One. I previously always rooted and flashed multiple roms until found one that like and stable enough for daily use. With the One, I honestly haven't done nothing to it. I find it prefect for everyday use. No problem was so ever. At times I feel weird because I never had an HTC or android phone for less than a week without rooting it and etc, but with the One no need since good as is.
I know also pending amount of developers we have currently since most leave to develop in other phones or carrier based phone model is what we can choose from roms available which is less than the other carrier model.

The HTC One is my first non Nexus smartphone, so dealing with all the bloat that comes with Sense and stock has been hard for me. When I was using my Nexus S 4G I used Slim Rom and loved it for its minimal nature and stuck with it. Slim bean 4.3 stable has been a great rom for me, though now that the 4.4 builds are out I've found them more suitable for a daily driver. Slimkat is awesome and I personally cant wait for it to reach stable. Minimal is my cup of tea, add in Google Experience Launcher and I'm one happy guy.
I had a Hero, then a whole bunch of Shift4G's. Rooted all of those because I could make them noticeably faster, increase the battery life, and get rid of apps I didn't use.
With the One, it's already fast enough that I wouldn't notice an increase much. The battery life is great for the way I use it, I recently had a stretch that was nearly 40 hours off the charger (obviously I didn't use it a heck of a lot during that time). And being able to hide the apps I don't want from the app drawer means I forget they're even there. Because of that, I haven't seen a good reason to put a different ROM on this phone...yet
First off, let me preface this by saying that I appreciate all of the hard work and time by the devs/volunteers here, and they give us some pretty cool things.
It just seems that no matter what rom I try, it has a bug or 2 that may not keep me from enjoying my phone, but it keeps creeping. Even the so-called stable KK still has growing pains. Is it possible for a rom to be completely stable? (aka, at least as stable as stock) Or is the nature of roms always going to be a bit behind from a standpoint of stability?
I have yet to try a rom (been doing this for 3 yrs) that has been 100% (stock) stable. I can use most roms just fine though, and again, this is not a slight on the devs and those who work hard. But let's be honest, an already flawed Lollipop must be a pain to get make a custom rom from. Am I alone? Btw, I'm back on stock for now, as it works fine. But will be waiting patiently for the awesome devs to figure it out. (and yes, I realize there must be testing for things to get better)
This is why I'm done with custom ROMs. I get all I need from stock KK + Xposed. Haven't flashed a ROM (as a daily driver) in almost 2 years.

It's not soo much the roms. Stock lollipop is bugged from Google as it's relatively new so hasn't had everything ironed out yet like the older KK

imo yeah. tis why I went back to stock 4.4.4 and GravityBox. No issues since then. None. Zero. Roms not worth fiddling with IMO. too many bugs trying to figure out if it's the app, the kernel, the ROM...I will do custom kernels but...no more than that.

I think its all in what type of bugs you get. I've seen bugs even on stock roms, custom roms give you those options where stock falls short. I do however think Xposed is a good way to possibly fix some of those issues

I'm not bitter about it lol, just got tired of flashing new ROMs all the time. It's nothing against the devs, they do some really great work, I just now prefer the dependability of stock. It was the original Moto X that changed my habits.
It's software, by definition it will have bugs.
The question is whether or not you can live with a particular ROM's set of unique bugs.
I've been running an old (Oct. 2014) CM11 nightly because it mostly gives me what I want without undue grief (weird reboots, battery drain, etc).
It's far from perfect, it won't play nice 100% with my car head end just to list one thing (BT bug, seems to be fixed in CM12).
I play around with other ROMs using MultiROM, but always come back to the old CM11.
I'm quite happy there is such an assortment to try, imagine how unhappy you would be if there was only one and it had a major (in your opinion) bug.
I don't think it's possible to get rid of all bugs ever. Its an os that is working with constantly changing apps and devices. But, I use cataclysm as my dd with elementalx and I don't notice any bugs. Im sure they are there, they just don't affect me with my particular usage.

I'm totally agree with @_MetalHead_. I've came to Nexus, because I was tired to flash my Xperias with custom ROMs an CMs., thought I still think that Sonys hardware is supperior than the LG and Acer one.
Sure that all of custom ROMs have bug or two. But that is because Google have all bunch off developers that are fully employed to make stock android. You are aware, that custom ROMs here are made by individuals or small group enthusiasts. And that is. As man grows, he more and more prefer bitter chocolate than the sweet one. Sweet one is for children. And offcourse, we both enjoy.

That's funny, I used to hate dark chocolate as a kid and now I prefer it.
They all have bugs. Every ROM I've used stock or custom has had bugs. Though staying stock or staying with the stable builds by the big name teams yielded the most stable experience for me. If someone flashes weeklies/nightlies and does not expect a bug or two they're doing it wrong. Main thing is finding something you as a user can live with.
It's funny that I just opened XDA 5 minutes ago to search for people's opinions about completely stable custom roms and I immediately came across this thread. I guess I will keep my phone stock and try Xposed for the first time when it's available.
I was done with flashing and experimenting with my Galaxy S2 a while ago after I realized there wasn't a perfect rom. But it's tempting though now I have a Nexus phone..
Send from the Matrix
I wondered about this, reading about what devs have deal with what googles supplies over time.
I tried Cataclysm lollipop and that's really close to being a solid rom but the bugs from google really make it frustrating to use as a daily rom, poor ram management and lockups, the inabilty to multi task without redrawing.
from a consumers point of view you expect lollipop to be an improvement over kitkat,
Switched back to kitkat and didn't realised how good and battery friendly It is.
This is why I stayed with nexus, the closet thing to a stable phone, will wait for 5.1 before I update.
Yes they are. In the lollipop updates on unofficial cm roms I'm still getting camera bug and the voip bug where I can't be heard on a headset. They appear after a few hours to weeks. Happend on a nighty today so Sent logcat in. Lollipop shouldn't have been released in the mess it's in. It's laughable that a couple of pple cherry picking from roms will do anything other than incorporate the bugs. There is a Golden rule here # devs can do no wrong and you can't put them down# cherry pickers are not developing anything imo. They merge others work, sometimes producing a better rom than the original, granted, but fixing problems. They have no idea 90%of the time. 10%are more skilled. But if google with hundreds of coders can't get it right what chance have independent roms? Look at the official lollipop CM. Still on nightlys and will be when 5.1 comes.
I run roms until a bug crops in and won't go which breaks something I need. Them on to the next. Bigsys?? K K roms were the closest to perfection. Fast and fluid.
Kernels is another thing, for another day..
While they may be less than perfect, from what I've been reading the Nexus 5 may be skipping 5.1 and going directly to 5.2
Sent from my Nexus 5
People are less than perfect by nature so that being said ,art imitates life as.
well as android 5.0 and above
From my point of view, even the stock ROM has its own flaws and sometimes it gets resolved a few revisions/versions later. On a custom ROM, it tends to be resolved pretty quickly provided the developer is actively monitoring user feedback and supporting it.
I'll usually only look for custom ROMs which focuses on staying as stock as possible while improving its speed and stability, I'll try to stay away from ROMs that offers a lot of other additional features which may or may not break another thing or two.
Not sure if this has been posted or perhaps if this can start a whole thread on 100% working custom roms.
This may come off as a bit of a rant, and i am no begger nor a complainer.. but I have reach my wits end. This isnt some newb who has just been in the scene, I have been around since the G nexus and never ran into so many problem then with this phone. I am so tired of getting updates that hose roms.. or roms that need 3-4 band aides before its even usable. Rom/developers that dont even test for the phone that they are releasing for leaving us dependent on the care of the developer to take the time to fix said issues.. CAF roms that constantly lose LTE connections. NON CAF builds where we are lucky if GPS works and doesnt reboot our phones. I mean come on. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. What does it take for us to just get something that works? Does this mean we HAVE to use stock roms to achieve this or is it safe to say, with all the revisions, models, updates, that the lg g2 has been and will always be a lemon.
What is YOUR opinion on this? No one else feel the same way as I?
It just seems like enough is enough. I cant think of the last custom rom that wasnt stock based that wasnt 100% working for lg g2.
Can anyone recommend some custom roms asop or other that WORK out of the box, no special flashing, no special permission, JUST WORKS?!
Thank you for your time.
I have used Xdabebb's rom and other rom's that are based on stock rom's, they work great, while I had issues with CM/AOSP. The stock rom's are good enough for daily use.
I agree wholeheartedly. It is downright daunting, all the different roms out there and they all seem to have some sort of bug or function that doesn't work. As ECrispy said, there are some that are "good enough", I noted that you said that, rather than "great" or "perfect" or "very good". Is there a rom out there that's a bug-free, no compromise, light weight rom that's better than stock? I have my qualms with stock, but but but, everything works.
Which is the most stable stock rom? I need to reflash mine as I have been running on an old rom for about a year. Any suggestions?
I would be running the cloudy g4 stock rom, for the camera benefits and the fact that its not completely ugly like G2 stock. Except no matter how much I mess with it I cannot get all the verizon networking to function properly.
I'm on and older JackpotClavin cm build, I've been on his builds for a while

This. Right. Here.
I believe this is the issue that that caused the VS980 support to be dropped from CM. The last commit was something along the lines of "let's pull builds until someone figures out the RIL problems". I have been unable to find a CAF rom that will consistently connect to LTE like a stock based rom. I'm currently running GalacticStryder's PA build for VS980, it will keep a data connection (unlike other roms that will lose connectivity when switching from LTE>3g or wifi>LTE). Unfortunately, it doesnt like to switch back to LTE after dropping to 3g in a timely fashion.

I've been using CM13 for several days and one issue I had was the data not working. The automatic APN settings provided by CM upon connecting to the internet over the cell towers didn't work, so I simply deleted them all, manually input the APN values specific to my mobile provider (China Telecom) and then GSM+WCDMA as the preferred network type. You MUST know what network type and APN settings are required for your phone in order for you to get 3G or 4G data connection. The only small but minor issue is when you listen to music from the speaker, not using headphones, it's very low. Anyone who has a G2 knows that it has ****ty sound quality if you don't use headphones. On that note, WOW, the music player and equalizer on the new CM13 are amazing! This has now boosted the volume by at least 30-35% for me. The base and surround sound while using headphones is clean, crisp and clear. It blows away the sound quality using stock android 5.0.1
I can't stress that enough because I have dirt cheap headphones that now sound like they're moderately high quality because of that. As far as other bugs/issues, they're all very minor things which aren't very noticeable and don't affect the overall working condition of the phone. All-in-all I salute the CyanogenMod team for all of their efforts. Going from Android lollipop 5.0.2 with all of the bloatware apps, fast draining battery, and consistently slow performance of the phone, I can safely say I'm very satisfied with the transition.

I've been out of the custom ROM news for almost 8 months. Currently running stock lollipop on a XT1053 with an Unlocked bootloader. The phone is already rooted with TWRP installed.
Basically can anybody who's been using a custom ROM chime in and let me know how it's going and if there are any bugs? I'm looking for something stable, bluetooth and GPS is a must. Looking for speed (my phone is finally starting to show it's age) and battery life the same or better than stock.
So Kernels... I used to flash them on my OG Droid 1. It was easy, flash it and it works. Select governer settings in the ROM. Is it the same thing on these newer phones too?
Welcome aboard ... even though development for our beloved Moto X is winding down, there are still some decent choices. I am a minimalist, so I use Megatron's AOSP rom. It is very quick and responsive ... haven't found any bugs to speak of. It actually makes the device feel like a mini nexus. Good luck with whatever you choose.
