Android M Loaded, Attempted Root - Unable to Boot - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I successfully installed Android M, and things were mostly okay. Titanium Backup won't load. It force closes, and having a problem with Dolphin Browser flashing a handful of times and then erroring out...unable to use. Other than that, everything seemed to be working perfectly. However, I needed to be able to restore my app settings, and I know Titanium Backup needs root. So, I thought maybe that's why it was force closing. So, I decided the easiest way to root would probably be using the Nexus Toolkit. I used that, which seemed to go normally, but the phone won't boot now. It just goes black. ADB seems to be able to communicate with it in this black screen state (via Nexus Toolkit, for example), but I can't get anywhere. I tried re-flashing the boot and bootloader, but it didn't help. I am seeking the wisdom of the elders.

YOu are going to have to start all over. SO factory reset. to clear out everything and get a fresh M load.
The toolkit is for Android L. So it overwrote things that Android M needed.
Once you have a fresh install. Go here http://www.androidauthority.com/android-m-root-613760/ and root.

all you need to do os flash a m kernel(despair kernel) and the latest SuperSU, and youll have root. flashing the latest supersu with a m kernel will not work.

Thank you for the feedback. I am mostly in business. I can't get BusyBox to install, though. The app runs fine, but actually installing it from within the app does not work...says it was not successful. I have tried the other location, which didn't work also. Any thoughts? Thanks much; greatly appreciate the assist.

I'll do some more research and get back to you on this one. Not exactly sure how busybox is running on the new file structure.

LG Revolution root help

Hello everyone. I know I'm a noob, but am hoping I can get some help anyway. Tried searching and not too many people are having the same problem, so I started a new thread.
Anyway, I used the one click root found in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348557
( I tried to post in that thread, but can't since I don't have 10 posts )
I'm new to hacking and I'll be honest. I only wanted to root my phone so I could use wireless tether, and then use Titanium Backup to freeze a lot of the bloatware on the phone. I have no desire to install a different ROM. I'm happy with the one it has, and happy to take the updates Verizon pushes. Everything was good until the latest update came through. When it downloaded, and rebooted, instead of updating, it booted in clockwork mod recovery. No matter what I tried, I couldn't get the update to go through.
So I settled on never updating again and froze the updater to prevent my phone from trying to update and going to CMR at random times. About 4 days later, my bluetooth quit working. Couldn't figure out why. Thought I was going to have to send it in for warranty work, so I tried to undo all the mods. I unfroze everything, and then hit the one click unroot button. It said it worked. Problem is, superuser is still installed with no way to uninstall.
My first question is this: How do I get superuser gone so my phone can be back to factory so they'll never know it was rooted?
Next I tried to go ahead and get the update since the unrooting process was supposed to have reinstalled stock recovery. Well, it didn't. I still ended up booting up into CMR again. STILL can't update even after unrooting. Double checked, and wireless tether and Titanium backup both say "no root". On a whim, I try the blue tooth and guess what. It worked. May not need to send the phone off for warranty work after all.
So my second question is this: Would freezing the updater cause the blue tooth to stop working? If so, how can I either keep it working or stop the updates without freezing the updater? It's like I have to choose between having blue tooth or having my phone randomly boot into CMR whenever it tries to update.
Third question, pertaining specifically to the one click root I linked to above: How can I get rid of the CMR? Is it possible to root the phone without installing CMR? If I can get it unrooted back to factory ( without superuser or CMR ), how can I root it again so that it doesn't install CMR and keeps the stock one?
I know this is a lot of question and I'm a noob, but I'm a noob willing to learn. If this problem has been encountered before, I apologize in advnace for not finding the appropriate thread. I tried.
updater app
Yes freezing the software update app will cause your Bluetooth to stop working. I used a app called Gemini app manager to go change the permissions of the software update app so it did not have any permissions to do anything. I have not been bothered with update prompts since.

There's no need. MTMichaelson has come up with a easy way to keep your phone rooted during the upgrade from ZV7 to ZV8.

Yes it will. Several people have reported this in different threads. I'm not sure of a way around this, but I think others might have a way around it. If you follow MT's method to keep root during the upgrade, you want have to worry about it!

There's no need to do this either since you can keep root and upgrade.
Here's what you need to do.
1) Go here and root your phone again.
2) Go here to upgrade to ZV8 while keeping root. There's also a method for reinstalling CWM as the upgrade will remove it.
This will: keep your root, get you upgraded, fix your bluetooth and keep CWM.
Good luck!

How did you change permissions in Gemini? I turned off all the autorun features and was able to get Bluetooth working but I didn't see anything about permissions in the settings. I could have missed it though being at work and all. Will turning off all the autorun features of the Software Update app stop it from trying to download the update in the middle of the night when I'm not looking like it sounds like it should?
In gemeni select block app. It's the same as freezing in titanium backup.

[Q][RECOVERY] Need a recovery, please help!

DROID BIONIC
Android Version: 4.0.4 ICS
System Version: 6.7.246.XT875.Verizon.en.US
So i finally rooted my phone and got superuser. But the method didn't give me a safestrap or bootstrap file to download.
I went online and have dowloaded multiple safestrap apk files (1.0, 2.11, 3.1) and they all said they run on ICS. So i install then and when i go to run them it prompts me and says "unfortunately, safestrap has stopped." and it's followed by another little pop-up that says "Safestrap has been denied superuser permissions." So i can't get into recovery to flash any roms. I'm not sure what to do.
I've tried to wipe the data, caches, and restore my phone, nothing helps. And i made sure my USB debugging is on. But after everything i've tired all my recovery apps still force close and don't get permission. I've also tried to flash my roms using the stock recovery and nothing happens.
I also downloaded titanium back-up and when i go to open the app it notifys me that it doesn't get root permissions, that my phones not rooted. Now with the ICS update theres a Root Check in the stock recovery and it reads “qe 1/1″- so that tells me i"m rooted. So i'm not sure there.
I don't know what to do. Maybe i'm missing a few steps. If anyone could help me out and point me in the right direction, i'd appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!
I got same issue
Did you get it resolved. I spent all afternoon only to be rooted but unable to acess recovery. any elder statesman that have any answers?
No, i haven't fixed the problem yet. Was hoping someone could help me out
This is what happens when i try opening any safestrap app i install.
I would suggest PM Hash code, he created the SS apk, if any one has the answer he would

Safestrap
Which version of Safestrap did you try? I prefer 3.1 as it has touchscreen capabilities. Do you by chance have bootstrap installed? This could be giving the error.
---------- Post added at 08:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:18 PM ----------
For the safestrap failing to be granted super user access error, you should be able to manually 'whitelist' it in your superuser application. If that does not work, you might want to try a different root program. I tend to use SuperSU, as I enjoy the features, and the realiability.
I tried the versions listed- 1.0, 2.11, 3.1
None of those worked. And no, I've never had bootstap installed. And what's the "whitelist"? I've never messed around with the superuser app, I've only just checked the log and see all my root apps get denied (titanium, safestrap, etc.)
And for the other root method: I'm not sure how to do any other methods, or even find any for that matter. I know my phones rooted, it tells me in my stock recovery.
If anyone could help me out by posting links, that'd help A LOT!

Has any application that requires Root Access, or Sudo, ever been granted Super User Permissions? If not, I have a feeling that your root was not preformed correctly. If I may ask, do you remember which "root" method you used? I used HoB Linux Edition, as I run Gentoo. HoB Linux Edition stands for House of Bionic Linux Edition. Here is a link for HoB. (Well, apparently I am unable to post links until i have posted atleast ten times. Message me on Google talk for the link. My GT is later on in this message).
There is a version for Windows, Mac, and the best of all, Os/Distros based off of the Linux kernel (which is based off of the Unix Kernel). As for the whitelist, you are able to go in and select which applications you would like to either always deny, grant, or ask for Super User Access. Again, I've mainly only used SuperSU, as i have had problems with most of the others out there currently. I would not go off of the stock recovery, as, for me at least, when I had an incomplete root, the stock recovery said I was rooted, even though I was not. If you could, could you please post a copy of the log from the super user program that you use? Also, which one do you use, again? If you are online/awake currently, message me on Google talk your questions. i will post anything that solves this issue in the morning. This is do to my mother decided that I need to go to bed. My Google talk is ([email protected]). My Google talk is also best to reach me for quick replies during the hours of: 0700 hours through 1530 hours as I am in my classes at that period of time (High School). Another quick question, did you ever go to Az or Fz Fastboot, during your root process? (Been rooted for over 1.5 years now, a little hard to remember). If not, I doubt that the Root was successful. I am sorry for my late response, as I was watching BSG Blood and Chrome, while shining my shoes for the ROTC inspection tomorrow.
Hope we fix this soon,
~NH85
No, so far since i've rooted this phone superuse has denied every application. I use the superuser v3.1.3.
I was thinking just last night that my root was performed incorrectly, so i went to droidbionicroot website and downloaded a un-root method (as well as several root methods) But i haven't done it yet, I've read that it bricked some users phone's and i don't want that.
I'm on a windows and have tried several root methods. I think the one that actually worked for me was called "PetesMotorolaRootTools_v1.07"
Also, what's Az or Fz fastboot? I'm sorry, I'm still kinda new to this rooting stuff so i appreciate the patience.
I don't have a google talk so I'll just email you at the address. My email is [email protected]

[Q] Question moving My Verizon App

I have an odd issue with the My Verizon app. To start off, I'm on a Verizon Moto X DE. I originally installed Jcase's Pwnmymoto to gain root access, and while I had that exploit installed I was able to move My Verizon to a user app so I could Greenify it.
But now I've finally unlocked my phone (just wanted to make sure everything worked on my phone for awhile before voiding warranty), I restored everything to stock beforehand using RSDlite and everything went smoothly, flashed TWRP and made backups and whatnot.
Now the odd thing is if I try to move My Verizon to a user app, it won't "stick". I've even tried uninstalling it but that won't "stick" either after a reboot. I've been using TiBu and even tried another app Systemcleanup I think, but its the same thing each time, after a reboot My Verizon is back to a Vendor App.
I have even tried moving it with Root Explorer but I just get the message "file transfer failed" or something along those lines.
I've converted several other apps to user apps with no issues, including Youtube and Google Maps, both of which stick fine after reboots.
The odd thing is while I was running JCase's exploit I had no issue moving My Verizon, but now just the stock unlocked DE can't seem to accomplish this task.
I'm guessing this could be accomplished via ADB or Fastboot, but I'm not sure if its possible, nor would I know the commands to do so.

i can tell you how to use adb to move it. not that difficult at all. But if you successfully moved it with TiBu and then it moved back after you rebooted then I doubt adb would fix the problem. I can't think of why pwnmymoto would allow you to do this and TWRP doesn't. I bet that verizon has so many other things built into the phone that it runs checks on boot to make sure my verizon is somewhere and then moves it if it isn't. There isn't even a myverizon.apk so I'm not sure what you are moving (at least not on my phone). You would need to move the apk and the odex as well I'd assume but that might be wrong. You could try freezing it with TiBu then moving it with root explorer. I know the google maps and youtube are just apks with no odex files so that could be your problem but again im not sure.
Yeah that's the odd thing, it worked in pwnmymoto but doesn't now, that's why I'm a little confused on it. I definitely have Myverizon.apk on my phone, in fact it shows up in at least 2 spots on Root Browser. One in system/vendor/app and the other just in vendor/app.

Still haven't gotten any farther on this, just decided to leave MyVerizon frozen for now, which really doesn't matter too much I guess since I have unlimited data anyway.
Unless someone else comes up with a solution as to why this is happening?

Help, can't load recovery, run playstore, or sign in to CM or google acc't

I have a HTC one, rooted. been running CM nightly's for over a year now and been very happy. 2 weeks ago, the nightly was CM12, and I flashed it. phone locked up shortly after, and would go into a boot loop. I could get into TWRP, tried flashing each of 4 saved recovery points. none worked, kept going into the boot loop. playing around in TWRP, I found, now not sure where a May 2014 CM nightly, and flashed it. it worked, kind of. the phone came back as a new phone, asking me to put my name in for the first time and tried to sign into my google acct, which did not work. So I am running 11-20140504-SNAPSHOT-M6-m7spr. However, if I click on PLAYSTORE, say to get Titanium Backup back on the phone, it quickly opens, then closes. there is a window on the second screen that says I need to sign into my google acct. I tap that, and it quickly flashes and disappears. Most of the apps I had are gone, but the files seem to be intact on the drive. I can boot into the bootloader, but when I select recovery, it appears to enter recovery, I get the blue TWRP initial screen, it goes black, and then repeats, so I can not go into recovery to flash a CM11, or flash anything.
can anybody help me fix my recovery and/or google account and/or playstore to get my recoverty and backup apps back. I feel if I can get into recovery, I can flash a new build and be back in business, maybe
I have copied my whole drive to my computer, so if I have to go back to factory reset and start over, I can do that, I just wanted to save time If I can fix recovery.
thanks in advance for your help. p.s. you probably can tell I am a step and a half above a newbie, so keep that in mind, thanks

Thank you BD619, I want to reflash TWRP, I think that is my best chance to making everything better. I draw your attention to last sentence, a step and an half above a newbie. if I recall, I open a DOS prompt and change directories to the phone, not sure how to figure out what the phone's letter will be, and I type some commands, again, not a clue. could you direct me to where I can relearn this aspect, cyanogen's updater was so easy.......kind of lost touch with the basics.
again, thankyou!
@blairan try this.
1. Boot into bootloader > fastbootusb
2. Open a cmd window from your platform tools folder or the folder I attached below.
3. Rename twrp to twrp.img ( remember windows hides extensions sometimes so just twrp should be fine) and put it in the folder you used to open the cmd window.
4. Type fastboot flash recovery twrp.img and hit enter...this should flash twrp for you.
5. Press power once and it should take you back to hboot where you can scroll down and choose recovery to confirm it flashed.
Tried in my ADB, and also open the file you linked to. booted phone into fastboot usb, double clicked on fastboot.exe, the dos window appears for a half a second, then closes. this is the same behavior as my google acct log in, playstore, and ebay app. I am able to use the phone, text and open email, play music, take and look at pictures. I hope you have some other ideas my friend

BD619, success, kind of. thanks for the CMD app, it opened the window and it stayed open. flashed the latest twrp, and it is now running. I put cm11 20150106 on the phone. I opened twrp. and flashed the nightly. it said flash was successful. I rebooted. nothing looked any different that the may build. I went into settings, and it says I am running that version. but.... I still can not get playstore to open. I tap it, it instantaneously appears, then closes. most of my apps are listed in the apps section of settings, but they are not opening.
should I try to flash the cm12 ? would like to get my apps, calendar back, my work apps. what did I do? what can we do to fix this?

ok, making some headway here. I went back into twrp, and since it is a newer version than what I had, I tried to restore a recovery point from twrp. it seemed to work. so I then flashed a a recent nightly. I am not getting what my phone looked like then, but it seems to think it is new and just starting, because I am now being offered to sign in to my google account. one huge problem, android keyboard stops running, then android keyboard (ASOP) stops running. I can now open playstore, and it stays open, asking me to open an account, or an existing account, which is good, but no input device, which is bad. flashing the most recent build to see if that helps.....
still no keyboard, now the 'back button' stopped working.....
and, should have quit fooling around, bricked again.

BD619, I think I am back on track here. something must have gotten corrupted when I tried to flash the cm12 nightly. anyhow, I ended up uninstalling titanium backup and then reinstalling it. works great, and I have been restoring apps from TB, and they all seem to be fine. Will get back to where I was, but with a lot fewer steps, I think. anyhow thank you for your time and encouragement.

Root won't "stick"

I have an n910t running 5.1.1., dok2. I tried rooting several times with chainfire for 5.1.1. through Odin. It goes through the process okay (or at least it seems to), and appears to work at first, but then I lose it. Root Checker verifies root, as does SuperSU, but after a few minutes it's gone. Ive installed Titanium Backup, AdAway, and AdBlock. For the most part, they don't recognize root. If they do (it takes a long time to recognize) they lose it shortly thereafter. Rebooting doesn't help. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Anyone have any ideas??
Just looked now. For one example, SuperSU acknowledges AdAway, but when I try to fire up AdAway, it won't work, saying it doesn't have access.
Did you install twrp and did it ask after you booted to twrp if you wanted to root the device.. if so this was a no no.. your already rooted twrp just get a little confused with the new kernels... you must remove root and reinstall supersu and when it ask when you load twrp do not root but reboot do not swipe... unless there is an easier way this worked for me...
I had the same or a similar problem. I didn't lose root completely but at times various apps were unable to gain root (after previously getting it successfully). The phone would freeze while Titanium or Root Explorer for example were waiting fruitlessly for root to be granted. It was haphazard. One time the app would work and next time it wouldn't, or another wouldn't.
Finally it got so frustrating that I installed my favorite rom on it (Tekhd). Now all is stable. I was hoping to keep it stock rooted until mm came out but I couldn't figure out what was going on so I blew it away. I had twrp on it too and would always be prompted "root not detected" but if I allowed it to install SuperSu it would loop.

Thanks for the replies. I tried to install twrp once, but it kept freezing. Then I tried without it. Similar behavior outcomes either way.
I'm leaning toward just swapping out ROMS as this is very annoying. Isn't that a dangerous thing to attempt if root is so unstable though?

Thanks. I did start fresh with stock firmware. Tried three times. Same result each time. I just reflashed to stock this morning. I'm actually using my old GS3 until I can figure this out. I'm on AT&T's network. I bought the T-Mobile variant just so I could root and possibly test drive a few custom ROMs. I'm ticked that even root has been elusive so far!
Any other suggestions?

Make sure your using a none corrupt download and when flashing root and twrp never let the phone restart to android screen... after you root and cf autoroot reboots hold down the buttons to boot into download mode and flash twrp.. make sure to get the .tar for 3.0 twrp.. if you need it i can post and once in DL mode flash twrp and then again do not boot the phone fully boot to twrp before and make backup if needed and when it ask after your done in twrp if you wanna root do not root in twrp... if this does not work i'm not sure what else it could be ... i have rooted my note 4 five times in the last month tring different things and it has happan one time to me and i had to odin firmware...
Thanks! I'll give that a try when I get home today.

You rock!! It seems that took care of it. I went through the process last night, but wanted to wait a bit to see if any issues surfaced. So far, it's been perfect. Thank you!!

Or as is the case with some roms, if an app takes to long to get supersu permission, especially after a reboot, all u have to do is open the supersu app then open the app u want root for.

I had tried that. It was very sluggish, and would frequently drop root access altogether. Since following S5Sickness's advice it's been solid, however.
