The Roku Box is by far the most versatile of apple TV or Chromecast. I own all three. However Apple TV streams apple Stuff easily and Chromecast Google Stuff. Roku with Private Channels does get ITunes Podcasts but not my music. And you need to use Play on or Plex to get YouTube. And thus far can not use Google All Access on the Roku.

That's 100 dollars compared to 35. You can get 3 chromecast for that device. I got 2 with free Netflix. $70-48= $22 for 2 chromecast.

The roku 2 xd is on sale for $59 with free shipping.
The cheapcast cost $41 with shipping and Google no longer permits it to do the functions I desire.

First month of Netflix is free anyways so you only really get a $32 value with 2.

I suppose that's true if you've been living under a rock and never had a Netflix subscription before. But if you're new, why in the world would you input your 3 month promotional before completing your first free month???
Hope this lights a fire
My hope is that this offering and general sentiment around the net will help push Google away from the idiocy of a closed and neutered Netflix dongle. I am excited about the possibilities for Chromecast. Google just needs to wake up and figure out that they can offer a device that will work for most consumers as a powerful, versatile tool. They need to:
1. Finish the damned SDK. Quit screwing around trying to figure out how to close up the device and release an SDK.
2. Get rid of the whitelist. If they are concerned about customer experience, they can offer a list of apps that are Google certified to work great with Chromecast, but don't block out everyone else. It's just rude.
3. Make it unlockable, rootable, hackable. Let the developers play with it. I don't think Google has even scratched the surface of what this thing can do. If they open up the device, it will grow into a real multimedia killer device.
It's not just about streaming local media (though I have to admit, I'd very much like to be able to stream files from Android and control streaming from a local PC via my phone). It's about Google having the courage to set this device free. It's the right move for consumers and it's the right move for Google. They will sell more devices and by giving up a little control right now, they will capture a bigger share of the Android multimedia market and they will help the Android multimedia market really take off. Or, they can sit on this device and lock down it's functionality (maybe give us a bone or 2 with some limited local streaming) and watch another attempt to make Android an important multimedia platform nose dive into oblivion. It's Google's choice, open up and succeed or lock it down and fail.
Roku has the local streaming capabilities which no longer exists with chromecast. Roku also supports the major Internet content providers, which chromecast does not.
The following article details which roku devices and which phones and tablets currently support local streaming
http://phandroid.com/2013/09/09/roku-app-update-local-streaming/
This might be on my holiday shopping list, and then my chromecast will be on eBay.
It appears to me that roku is a superior device at this time.
The Roku app only streams on like 10 devices right now and I'm not sure how fast that's going to change, as I went into the apk enabled the stream capabilities for my Photon Q and every video (including ones made by the approved devices) said incompatible format. I'd think by Christmas the SDK should be out for the Chromecast.
On a side note, I love the Roku, I use it with Plex (local content) and Simple.tv (HD OTA) and its awesome.
I got a chromecast with the understanding that the dev community had already found an exploit to root it for future development. I left my chromecast plugged in for a few hours and the darn thing updated itself without any prompts to the user. What a joke! Now I can only use it for youtube, google play music, and netflix. I am at the whims of Google if they decide to open this device to the developers so they can make this device reach its full potential.

They exist...if you whitelist your receiver and build the app.
Sorry, but the cool toys are developer only until the SDK is finalized.

Signs are not good... the moto x 2014 doesn't have slimport or MHL
I use the slimport of N5 everyday to a TV. If there's no slimport or MHL, what options do I have for screenmirroring without wifi?
I guess we'll see if the screen mirroring technology has improved. My Nexus 5 is hit or miss. If there's no Slimport support, I hope it can mirror good. I use the crap out of my Slimport for movies & tv.
I desperately need this feature as well, MHL/SlimPort/MirrorLink, ONE of the 3 will do. I have an NEX4000 Pioneer head unit and I use my phone to display navigation on the touchscreen DAILY. With one of these 3 technologies not only does it mirror my phones display on my head unit, it also alows the touchscreen on my radio to control my phone AND my phone screen can be off. both of these are impossible with mirrorcast and other wifi video sources. This will really annoy me if all the sudden I cant use navigation in my car.

Pioneer has been pretty good about adding features through firmware updates. Since they were able to add CarPlay to the 4000NEX, they should also be able to add Android Auto when that comes out. If they do, you won't need MHL to use Google Maps on your head unit.

This is a big factory in my purchasing decision as well. Hopefully it will have SlimPort, but as many others have said, Motorola has a poor track record in this area.
I have a Nex4000 as well and I am in the same boat. Anyone know if there is a way to find a definitive answer to this question?
Edit: I talked with google play support. The person I spoke with actually couldn't find out the answer. She is going to email me back when a lead tech comes in to figure this out.

Here is the non response. I am going to go with a no, which sucks.
Hello Erich,
Thank you for contacting Google. This is Lauren, it was a pleasure chatting with you yesterday. I really appreciate your patience while I looked into your question.
While Google does not support third-party display adapters, or guarantee that Nexus devices will work with these third-party adapters, the Nexus 6 may work with third-party display adapters.
If a recent OS update causes a Nexus device to stop working with a display adapter, contact the manufacturer of the adapter.
I hope this information helps, but please feel free to let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.
Best regards,
Lauren

All that means is she didn't contact anyone like she said she would. I would follow up and simply ask, was slimport or MHL support added to the device. its a yes or no. it's impossible for there to be a maybe like she suggested. you cant ACCIDENTALLY have slim port support then ACCIDENTALLY break it. good grief.
Just push her to contact someone who will know, I work in technical support and unfortunately this is how it works

IDK, im grasping at straws until its confirmed by someone actually SHOWING it working. I still will probably get the phone, but i'll have to wait till and android Auto head unit is released first so that way I don't lose my navigation and other functions.
No reviews have mentioned this either..

There is a guy who purchased a Nexus 6 off of craiglist, you could ask him if the phone has slimport, MHL, etc.

The store says it will work.
install and see if works. You not going to break the phone.
So it doesn't work, no tracking at all and the magnetic switch doesn't work. The phone appears to have all the sensors but it doesn't work....
Can somebody confirm it will work or not?
The one mini 2 does not have a gyroscope which is what the cardboard uses to move the phones vision etc so no, it will not work.
Is the "Nexus 6" Bluetooth Smart Ready?
The answer seems to be NO when I check Bluetooth's official website for Smart Ready devices.
However, the Nexus 4, 5 and Nexus 7, 10 seem to be compatible. Which makes me wonder if this is a typo or Google consciously decided to skip this for the Nexus 6.
I'm thinking of buying a Smart Ready sensor for the Nexus 6 and need to figure this out.
Thanks,
Mikel
Yes it is. It makes full use of the Bluetooth 4.1 spec. It's part of what makes the Wear devices so handy, their connection uses less power than if they used 4.0.

The H7 doesn't show up in the regular BT device search, but the Smart-capable app can see it and it pairs through there.

Hey guys,
any of you using a VR headset with this phone? What's your option?
I myself like the Zeiss VR One GX, but unfortunately they don't have a drawer for Nexus 5X. Maybe in the future. Meanwhile I'm looking to some bluetooth controlled headset.
Amazon for the headset. Lightweight ear buds priced from $16 USD to close to $100

I would say no, because Google has very specific ideas of smartphone displays response time. The LCD ISP probably won't be good enough.
That said, it doesn't mean the 5X can't handle VR.
I asked a similar question in the "Android N Preview" thread, and someone replied stating that the N Preview 3 has greatly boosted his VR Experience on his 5X.
I guess the 5X just won't get official Support for Daydream.
