So yesterday, at about 3:20, I dropped my phone into the toilet (there was nothing in the toilet, thank god). It fell in so the screen made contact with the water, but the phone was never submerged, it only floated. I immediately pulled it out, and dried it off. After this, it kept working so I kept using it. It began dying so I plugged it in without second thought, and it didn't charge. After this, I put it in a bag of rice for 6 hours. After that, I decided the water that did get in (1 drop in the charging port, nothing anywhere else) had been dried up. I must've been wrong, since that shorted out my phone. So here I am today, with the question of how do I test to see if it is my battery or the PCB that is shorted out, so I can replace the battery or replace the phone, in each respective case.

Hi all,
My little nephew dropped my Tytn II in the toilet and i want to know if anyone has had an issue with water damage and managed to resurect their phone.
I pulled it out within 3 seconds of falling in, i then removed the battery and slid the keyboard out furiously drying with a towel. After about 30 minutes i reinserted the battery and the sacreen showed thin multi colred horizontal lines and then went white.
I removed the battery again and then left it for 24 hours at which time i restarted it and got to the "smart mobility " screen but then the screen did the multi color lines and then went white after about 15 seconds, when i put the phone to my ear i hear like a scratching sound, i contacted the phone company i am with and they sia try drying it with a hair dryer or leaving it out in the sun, also they had a customer who put their phone in the oven and got it to work again. Granted this was not for a Tytn II but i am just wondering if anyone has had any success with getting their pohne to work again after a similar set of circumstances.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Kane
Patience can work wonders - you have to understand that the very intricate insides of your phone have been saturated (from the sound of things) and even the merest hint of any residual damp in the wrong place could effectively kill the phone as you've described. It could also cause more long term damage when it's powered up in that state, so I'd really recommend keeping the battery away from it for as long as possible. Do as the guys on the phone suggest, leave it somewhere warm and dry (your airing cupboard if you have one) and just wait a few days at least, maybe even a week. I wouldn't advise any extremes of heat (the oven etc) as this could damage something in itself - you don't want to go from a damp phone to a melted one! The LCD screen may be quite sensitive to heat, and you wouldn't want to damage that.

Well I did the same exact thing about a month ago...I was pissed! I reacted very quickly and pulled out the battery and let the phone sit overnight. In the morning I dissassembled the phone and took a hair dryer to all the circuit boards and pretty much every piece. I put it back together, said a little prayer, and it worked! Just thought I would share my experience.
So my recommendation...take it apart and dry it out nice and good.

WOW!, thats fantastic, i did look at taking it apart but the screws are so tiny and look to be in the star shape (not like a regular screw) can you advise where you got a screw driver set to open it.
PS. I was pissed as well.
Thanks to everyone for your help

Sorry one more thing, can you tell me how long you dried it for with the hair dryer? how far away were you holding the hair dryer and have their been any side effects since you got it working.
PS. i found a place that sells the screw drivers,
go to radioshack and buy a T4 or T5 screwdriver. I think it's a 5 but just buy the whole T set. It's for electronics. There's a thread somewhere on this site that shows how to disassemble to the kaiser
Hi, I dunked my phone in a sink a few days ago I tried to dry it out and it wouldn't boot, even with a new battery. My girlfriend suggested trying to heat it up a bit to help it dry out so I put it in the microwave for a few secs but all that did was make this ozone smell... Any ideas????
LOL k no I didn't stick it in the MW, but the gf did suggest that and I about died laughing. I can't get the phone to boot and have pretty much written it off unfortunately - is there anything I can do with it to be useful to the Dream/Android world? I can only assume it's been dissected entirely already.
FYI, when you get your phone wet, the worst thing to do is try to turn it on... next time, take the battery out, leave the back off, slide open the keyboard, and put it in a bag of instant white rice for a couple days. This is your best bet it will survive to live for a bit longer, but will eventually stop working down the road as connections rust...
You can also give it a dip in rubbing alcohol prior to putting it in the rice, this will force some of the water off/out of connections, and clean it a bit. And since rubbing alcohol isn't water, and doesn't effect electrical circuits like water does, no harm. Still do the bag of rice for a couple days trick, though.
And one last thing, it is never the battery! Never, never, never! The battery is water proof, and doesn't die from short circuits(which is what happens when the phone gets wet, and is what causes instant death)
Interesting, I'd always figured it was the battery that went. I used to lifeguard and once found a phone at the bottom of the lake, let it dry out for a week or so and it turned right on, but the battery was hosed.
I did take it as apart as I could and let it dry out, didn't do the white rice trick but I did blow some compressed air (real air from a compressor, not the canned stuff) through it briefly. Main reason I thought the battery was the culprit was I took a multimeter to it and there's exactly 0.0v across the +/- terminals (240kOhm, so probably not shorting). However, when plugged in the phone only provides 1.8v across the corresponding terminals, much too low to charge - any idea if the phone looks to see if the batt is installed before applying power to the battery?

Not true. My mom dropped her Samsung Omnia into a pool, then got a new phone through insurance. She tried putting the battery from the new phone into the old one, and it turned right on.
The battery in these things is more than just a battery. There is some control circuit on them, and shorting out the leads on the battery can fry the control circuit.
Hi. I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini. Today I dropped it in water. It wasn't really that deep so the phone wasn't in water all the way. I picked it up right away and looked if something happened and it seemed like it was working. But now, I was about to charge it but I realized that I can't. The phone doesn't charge. I tried different charger and everything but still nothing. I guess it's because water got in the USB port. I haven't any other option but to send it to repair because I flashed custom roms so guarantee or the original service wouldn't do it. I'm wondering what is to be done, if I can do it myself, and if I can't, how much will it cost? Thanks.
any time a phone or other elec. device is dropped in water, it should take out battery and put in rice (in sealed bag) for 2 days immediately or in somwhere warm at around 180-200 for hours.. any time you apply power to wet circuits you burn crap out.. you are most likely sol and i wouldnt bother sending it in they will probably charge you close to 200 .. just move on and buy a new phone.
Just though I'd add my 2 cents to this thread,
If the phone is working fine but it just won't charge or do anything with the mini usb connection, then the contacts for the mini usb to the motherboard may have a little corrosion on them. Clean then up and you should be good to go!
My friends swear that immediately turning it off and putting it in a bowl of rice works, the rice draws liquid out I think. They're reckless and this always worked for them. You should try it before you take the phone in. Leave it in rice for 2 or 3 days.
EDIT: sorry, I didn't check the date of the OP

Hey guys, two days ago I was using my s4 Active on the bathtub to test the Aqua mode on the camera. After that when I tried to charge it it wouldn't charge. I've been using different batteries and an external charger to keep it running before going to my provider and check if the warranty will cover it.
Yesterday I read that alcohol may work to fix water damage, so I poured some 80% rubbing alcohol onto the usb port and basically the entire back of the phone. I let it dry in the sun for about 20 minutes and when I turned it on the screen was completely ****ed up, there are like blubs under it, as if the alcohol got under the screen, i can barely see it and now the touch capability won't work. Is there any way to fix this or is my phone lost?

You did what? I....I just..........just send it in for warranty replacement, say it is water damaged, and leave it at that.
By chance, did you leave the battery in it when you did this? If so, take Devo's advice and pray for the best because that's your only hope. ANY liquid inside a phone with a battery in it will short things out. Even with the battery removed there are still capacitors inside that hold small amounts of electricity for a period that could be damaged by liquid. Not a very good idea.
Hello everyone
So a couple weeks ago I took a unexpected swim with my Nexus 6 in my pocket, and haven't gotten it to work since. When I got out I immediately took the phone out of my pocket and turned it off, only to have it boot back into fastboot a few seconds later, turn off, boot to fastboot, and turn of again. It did this several times till it just stayed off. I took it apart, dried it, and cleaned it in Isopropyl alcohol and tried to turn it on but got no response no matter what I did. :crying:
I would consider it fried except whenever I plug it into my charger, the charging icon comes up like normal and even does the battery filling up animation. I replaced the power/volume button strip inside the phone hoping that it was the only problem, but it still would't turn on. I haven't replaced the battery yet because the charging animation shows it's holding charge, but loosing 40ish% after a week and a half of sitting there.
So is there something else I can do, or is it fried? I'm probably going to get a new battery to see if that improves anything, but I honestly don't know what more to do. If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.
Thanks in advance!
It's fried. Best you can do is send to shop and see if they can salvage it.
Alright, I'll guess I'll have to do that. Thank you for your reply.
I would like to share photos of my phone and seee if anyone vcan help, my situation is kind of similar. I tried to charge after to days of silica drying and cleaning with IPA.
I thin the connection around the battery area isn't secure. Is there a glue that i could buy?
The only thing a shop may do, is give it a bath in a ultrasonic machine, and bake the board. Try a new battery, internal batteries never do well in WD.

How about sticking the charging coil to the new battery? What type of adhesive is needed?

You may still have enough adhesive left over on the coil to stick it to it. Otherwise it doesn't matter much, as long as its connected and not crazy loose, the frame will hold it in place.

I got it kind of working, but the sound is fuzzy and the screen is flickering a little.
I'm missing some screws, so I'll need to buy some new ones.
T3/M3 torx screws, 2mm/3mm height/diameter?
