I'm trying to troubleshoot why the screen will sleep/wake without touching the power button. I am not using a case.
Symptoms:
Simply picking the Kindle up will cause it to sleep/wake. Bumping, taping, shaking and even sitting there not being touched or moved will also cause a sleep/wake.
I've tried pulling the back cover off and disconnecting the power/volume cable thinking that may be the cause but symptoms still appear. I've also tried "resetting" the switch with a magnet but to no avail.
I believe I have a faulty magnetic case sensor but I do no know where it is located or what it looks like.
If it is faulty, besides replacing the main board, is there a way to replace, remove or bypass said sensor?
Any other suggestions or possible causes would be appreciated.

So yesterday my toddler son was playing with my Sprint Diamond when I saw him drop it onto the carpeted ground. The phone probably fell maybe about a foot but I guess the angle it hit the ground caused the battery cover to pop off.
When I picked up the phone, I noticed the screen was off and assumed it was in sleep mode because the battery didn't dislodge or anything. But when I pressed the power button, the phone wouldn't come on. I tried pulling the battery, hard resetting, etc but the screen still won't turn on.
While I was playing around with it, holding down the volume down button, power button and enter button at the same time, I could see the screen come on for a bit, then go blank again.
Physically there's no visible damage, there isn't even a scuff or scratch on the corners where the phone probably hit the ground. However, by some freak chance I think the fall caused something to go wrong internally, maybe the LCD digitizer became loose?
When I pull the battery and restart the phone, it vibrates as if it were powering up. But the screen never comes on.
Considering I don't have insurance on the phone, taking it back to Sprint is not an option and I'm out of the warranty period. Has this happened to anyone before? Any advice? Anyone have experience disassembling a Diamond? How hard was it? Thanks in advance.
the diamond (sprint) is a layered device.
you will need some very small screwdrivers lots of light and patience.
the screen is glued to the digitizer and the front housing, removal from the housing WILL crack it.
the boards and lower button pad con be removed safely, for inspection/reseating of plugs.
if the problem is not a loose plug, than a new screen and digitizer is in order and available on ebay from china
Just posting my personal success story with fixing creakyness when pressing the edges of the screen, no idea if this is the common issue that most people are having. I looked through a few pages of posts and haven't seen anyone else post about this fix - apologies if I missed it.
I don't personally have any screen separation so that's likely something different entirely, and seem to have a fix already anyways. My creaking was also mostly localized to the upper right by the hardware buttons.
My issue was specifically with the BATTERY I tried tightening screws and it seems to go away temporarily but would come back after some hours. Taking out the battery and re-seating seems to have stopped all creaking entirely. What seems to be happening is the adhesive (applied to the top and bottom of the battery/frame) is so strong that it's actually putting force on the metal frame it's attached to and warping it, and said warping of the frame is what causes the creaking sound when depressed.
Not sure if this is just an issue with the way it was assembled, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the adhesive might melt under heat when playing games or charging and perhaps cause the frame to expand slightly - not sure if that would be enough to actually make this problem re-surface. I'll have to give it some time and a few charges to know for sure.
As of right now this thing feels rock solid. If the problem does come back I feel like cleaning off the original adhesive and re-applying your own in a smarter location should do the trick.
Instructions for how to remove the back cover and battery here can by found by googling "ifixit nexus 7", it's on the first page. Pry it off, pop it back on, no creaks.
I'll try this. Tightening the screws didn't fix the creakiness on my tablet either.
Question for the hardware people!
I'm not by any means a hardware expert, but I like to dabble and learn as I go. I've disassembled my G2 several times (screen+digitizer replaced, flex cable replaced, etc.) and I feel fairly comfortable with what I'm looking at. I recently attempted to transfer everything over to a new bezel, only to get 90% of the way done and find out they had sent me a D800 chassis rather than VS980. That's another story. When I put everything back into my original chassis, though, I now have a goofy issue with my digitizer. When waking the phone with the power button, I have to be touching the screen, or else the digitizer is either erratic or nonfunctional. In other words, if I just push the power button, the digitizer will not accept touches. If the screen times out and I immediately push the power button (before the phone locks), the digitizer will either not accept touches, or will start registering random phantom touches. If the phone wakes up due to a system event (phone call, notification, etc) the digitizer will not accept inputs. To remedy these problems I have to explicitly hit the power button to lock the phone, then hold my thumb down on the screen while I hit the power button to wake the phone again, at which point the digitizer functions properly.
So the question is, what might cause this? My first inclination is that it's some kind of grounding issue, but I'm not sure what I would be double-checking if I were to open the phone again. Does anyone have any DIY ideas or suggestions?
Thanks!!
Edit: Sorry wrong post, ignore my answer.
Hi all. I'm having a problem getting my tablet to stay powered off when it is docked with the keyboard. When I power the tablet off and close the lid, invariably it ends up turning itself back on. At first I thought something might have been hitting the (terribly placed) power button in my bag, but I discovered it happened when sitting flat on my desk with nothing near it. I suspect the reason is because the connection between the tablet and the KB dock is loose and the tablet tends to wobble slightly, but I have not tried to fix that as I don't want to damage anything. A few other posters talked about using foam tape in the joint to take up the excess space and tighten it up, so I might try that, but I was just curious if anyone else had experienced the same thing and what, if anything, was your fix (for the power issue).
Same problem
Hi there,
I've experienced the same problem during a flight. I turned the tablet before going the Xrays in the airport, and it was turned back on on the other side. I'm agreeing on the connector theory that might be lose, or something in the docks that trigger the power on. When the tablet is not on the dock, it won't power by itself.
I've got a replacement screen that my friend had in his house. Mine was broken (both the display and the digitizer, the latter was acting very weird). I did the replacement myself, and when I was finally done, I noticed something. The Touch Screen wasn't working (I could see the image but no input was recognized). I tried opening it and checking every single cable to see if there was anything wrong, but there was nothing looking broken or out of place. When I was going to test it, I noticed another very weird thing. It actually works if I keep the back of the phone off (not the back interchangable cover, I mean the back of the phone that is screwed in place). The problem is that this phone has a very annoying design that makes it so the Wi-Fi, Speakers, Camera and some other stuff don't function well with the back plate off, speacially the Wi-Fi.
I trully have no idea what is happening or what is causing the problem with the touch screen, and have no idea why the back plate makes the screen act funny. Can someone please help me figure this out?
Perhaps something in the digitizer's flex cable is shorting with the back panel. Try putting a layer of electrical tape between the flex cable and the back panel.
