[Q] ROMs + Project Fi - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What ROMs will work with Project Fi?
Do i need to stick with the stock ROM for it to function correctly?

All will work for you. One thing to make sure you do get is the Project Fi app. You may want to compile it into a zip you can install it with whatever ROM. Otherwise, you'll have to make sure you're on WiFi, so you can download it from Play Store.

all ROMs will work, BUT.. only the stock ROM if you want the WiFi calling, as that won't work on any ROM, except for stock.

why do you need to be on WiFi to download it from the play store?

Thanks for the info guys.
I'm going to run a self experiment on myself and turn Mobile Data off completely when i get my phone tomorrow, and see if i can go a month only using Wifi for data, just to see how difficult it would be to have the lowest possible phone bill.

I don't think "any rom" is the correct answer.
Since Sprint uses LMY47Z as their 5.1.1 build ID
And T-Mobile uses LYZ28E as their 5.1.1 build ID
Is there going to be a hybrid build of the 2 Factory Images?

you CAN use whichever factory image you want, they will work on any provider, same with the radios. if you are on tmo, you just might not get WiFi calling if using a different factory image. but that is stock, the op is talking about custom ROMs. all will work on project fi, but will not be able to do WiFi calling.

I'm going to take a wild guess here and say that you don't have Project Fi, and you are just guessing.
I'll just wait till my phone shows up and then post screenshots of everything stock so we have some actual proof on what factory image project fi is using.

that's the while point, anyone with a n6 can use project fi. it does not matter where the n6 was bought. your phone will not get a magic ota, it'll use whatever version you're already on.

Then why would google have different builds for T-mobile and Sprint?

because tmobile uses WiFi calling, and sprint doesn't. BTW, att and international users are getting the same build as sprint. anyways, on m, WiFi calling is included for all, but will only show up for tmo users or project fi users. yes, it'll probably be back to one build for all after lollipop.

WiFi calling is going to be in the stock image. I'd be more interested to see what part of that image is controlling the WiFi calling and switching between WiFi and two networks. Once that's isolated, I'd assume it could be baked into any ROM. My understanding was that the Project Fi app is just to monitor your account/usage/billing. But I'm not invited yet, so who knows.

Actually Google has their own Fi build for 5.1 (H) and has stated they are working on a Fi specific 5.1.1 build. People are getting carrier specific 5.1.1 OTAs on Fi though (only compounding the issues I've read regarding Fi and it's attempt to use two networks).

Well i got my phone, and here's what it came with

CyanogenMod
I'm waiting for CyanogenMod or AOSP Roms work with Project Fi. I recently bought a Verizon Galaxy S6 and I want to get rid of it/touchwiz. I still don't understand why you would lock a bootloader on android. I just got my invite

If you're on the Fi build I don't believe it lets you take carrier updates. In theory, Fi updates should roll out first. Ehhh Google

I just tested Fi with today's Chroma build. After installing the Fi app it connected to cell network. Everything worked fine except for the fact that I was stuck on Sprint. I normally land on T-Mobile. I doubt the network auto switching or open WiFi connect would work. I expected all this but decided to try anyway.

did you try any of the dialer codes to force network to switch ?

After an uninstall/reinstall of the Fi app and a reboot I was able to get back onto T-Mobile. I'm not sure if it will auto switch to Sprint. I'm in a good T-Mobile coverage area and never even saw the stock ROM switch.

Where's the 5.1.1 update on my off-contract N6?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but this if my first unlocked/non-carrier phone. I've always been with Verizon and have grown accustomed to waiting 1+ years to get updates.
I just got my N6 on Friday and the latest OS version available is 5.0.1. I'm seeing news articles all over the place going back as far as early March saying that AT&T/Tmobile customers are getting 5.1.1 OTA updates. I was under the impression when I bought my N6, that because I'm buying a non-carrier/vanilla Google variant of the phone, I'd be one of the first to receive new Android updates, and that carriers would be the ones lagging behind. Yet it seems the exact opposite.
I'm currently running build LRX22C 5.0.1 on Cricket Wireless. Should I be expecting a new update any time soon, or are we required to manually flash it or something?

I received mine from Moto on Thursday of last week. Before putting in my VZW SIM, I connected to wifi and it updated me all the way to 5.1.1(in increments of course). I think in your case, your SIM(carrier) is what's limiting you from updating. Try pulling your SIM rebooting and check for updates. If that doesnt work, you can do a factory reset and leave your SIM out, connect to wifi then see if you get the updates. Since its a Nexus, you can always manually flash the latest.:good:

Thank you. I just shut down, pulled sim, turned back on and checked for updates. Not available unfortunately, still showing 5.0.1 to be the latest.
You mentioned you just got yours on Thursday - is Motorola just now starting to roll this update out or did you just happen to get yours Thursday for whatever reason?

I ordered the phone Sat night from Moto and received it last Thurs. I had been reading through the forums here and saw several mention about how to get the phone to update to the latest version so and soon as I opened the box, I turned the hotspot on from my other phone, connected the Nexus 6 to it via wifi and all the updates started downloading(5.01, 5.1, 5.1.1). I think the updates are controlled by Google then the carriers not Moto. Try suggestion #2 if you dont mind starting from scratch
all the updates get controlled by google, after carrier approval. but, google does not promise updates asap. they promise updates within 3 weeks. being a google play device, you'd get the no carrier update only on WiFi. and with it having the Verizon sim in it, it'll get an update after Verizon approves the update.

OK, I just factory reset my phone with SIM removed (I needed to unlock the bootloader anyway, which requires a wipe). The 5.1 update showed up, and I assume 5.1.1 will appear next. Thank you guys

I just went up to Best Buy and bought an unlocked N6 without service. Comes without a SIM by default. I ran straight up to a Game Stop and bought service through Cricket Wireless and got a SIM from them.
For the record, I'm not a fan of Best Buy but all online retailers I could buy it from had tax in my state, so I figured I might as well skip waiting on shipping and just buy locally.

Turn on shamu's AT&T HD Voice

Ok, I got the Samsung Gear S2 watch which runs on 4g today thinking the Nexus 6 at least had HD Voice because the 5 did and you have to have it to connect to A&T's NumberSync or it wont work on 4g and its useless. Anyway, I got everything to work except I couldn't get it to connect to the NumberSync with the error "We are sorry. We cannot set up NumberSync because your device does not have HD Voice...." I called AT&T and they asked for my IMEI number and that will tell them and they said it must not have HD Voice. Is there some way I can get this enabled on this phone so I can use this?
Thanks!

and what does hd voice have to do with Volte??? Volte = voice over lte. without volte, lte is only a data line, with volte it is also a voice line.
Heck if I know I just said VoLTE and she said yes but the error said HD voice... Ill change the title

if you make a call on lte, and you have voice, then its on.
Im not sure if the phone has it. I keep reading Verizon version does but AT&T dont at the time. Here is someting else. I thought she said my phone was coming up as something else but the IMEI number I gave her was correct or the same as I read off.
if you go to the main settings, more, cellular network, turn on enhanced 4G LTE mode.

Whats weird is i dont have the option to turn it on in my phone settings and its an unlocked phone. The setting to turn it on/ off is there if i go to *#*#4636#*#* but the button is set to on and wont switch back and forth. There is supposed to be a nother setting under More/Cellular Networks/Preferred Network Type called extended and mine isnt there.

Does your phone company support VoLTE on this phone specifically?
The various Android 8 roms should support it if it works on stock. But many telcos check the specific model of the phone, and only enables it on the models that they have approved.

I'm on a AT&T MVNO (Red Pocket Mobile) so I don't know. But if you're talking about the backbone (AT&T) I still don't know because I believe my N6 was purchased from Google. I'm pretty sure AT&T branded N6's are approved.

LTE Connection Issues with latest EU ROM - 5 Jan Build

I just installed the latest EU ROM 7.1.5 and noticed that the phone doesn't connect to LTE and defaults to 3G or HSPA+ in areas with 4G signal.
LTE Prefered is already enabled in the settings so its definitely something to do with the ROM.
Has anybody experienced this with the latest dev rom or EU ROM.
Thinking of switching back to 6.12.29. Might stick to updating only in 2-3 weeks as ROMs are relatively stable.
EDIT: Confirmed that there is no LTE connectivity on 7.1.5. Switched back to 6.12 29
For those who need LTE, I would strongly recommend staying on EU 6.12.29 for now. Guess this applies to those on the Official Dev ROM too.
I'm connecting to 4G LTE w/no issues whatsoever on GlobeROM 7.1.5 (T-Mobile US) :

I had tried everything except flashing the older modem on 7.1.5. Rebooting the phone would show 4G signal for a second and it would quickly fall back to 3G.
And now that I've reverted to 6.12. 29, phone can connect to 4G. This is why I was saying its something to do with 7.1.5.
Guess I'm too lazy to connect to a pc and fastboot the older modem. Maybe the Globe ROM that you're running already has the fix implemented. I doubt its the dirty flashing which has helped because even I have been doing the same. Guess the GlobeROM devs noticed the bug and has patched their file with the older modem.
Anyway 6.12 29 has been quite stable for me. Are there any significant improvements on the newer ROM? If there is nothing noticeable, I guess I'll wait for next week's update which would have a fix.

Exactly my thoughts. The phone is still new and even despite this, most of the dev ROMs have been quite stable which is good for us!
What APN settings are you guys using to get LTE? I'm on AT&T in the bay area. I've been in the heart of San Francisco and I never had anything better than H+.
Well, Epic Rom has already been updated to fix the 4g problem. Just FYI

Oh man, thanks for taking the time to upload these images mate. I really appreciate it. However, these APN settings don't translate to AT&T. I am interested though to why APN protocol is set to IPv6 where as APN roaming protocol is set to IPv4... Lastly, I noticed your APN type is only "default, supl" which is mighty short. I have something along the lines of "default, supl, hipri, mms, fota" ... etc.
Anybody with AT&T here that got LTE to work?

I am interested though to why APN protocol is set to IPv6 where as APN roaming protocol is set to IPv4... Lastly, I noticed your APN type is only "default, supl" which is mighty short. I have something along the lines of "default, supl, hipri, mms, fota" ... etc..........................

OK I'll try it
Edit: it's roaming where the protocol is activated and I'm not roaming... But I'll try it
Edit2:
I tried it, no difference. I also applied APN type. Still the same result.

Yeah, I had the same problem. Seems like it is working for some and not working for others. Also its not a mi mix issue, its a 7.1.5 issue since a lot of other MIUI users are also having the issue.

IDK if it makes any difference, but,I've been dirty-flashing either EU or GlobeROM for the past month or so & have never had LTE Connectivity issues.

Anyone flashed any other carrier rom?

Here is a list of them from sammobile
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-s8/SM-G950U/
I think its going to be a free for all and maybe we in the verizon s8 will get love from the whole community this time, at least the US. It seems we all may have SM-G950U.
Is that correct more knowledgeable people?
I'm trying to flash to T-Mobile as all US networks use the SM-950U . That means they have all the bands for every network. I tried to flash through odin but if you flash the CSC file for T-Mobile , along with the other 3, the phone factory resets to stock Verizon firmware. If I just flash the AP (Actual software) and the CP (Modem file for correct bands), it works but I get a ton of bloatware from cricket, metro pcs, Verizon , and tmobile with a really glitchex out settings app. Also, without the CSC file your phone is still technically Verizon .
So we should wait? I have the Verizon version also but use TMobile.
We have to wait

I tried the method used on the S7 to flash another carrier and it does not work anymore. There's some type of carrier partition that can't be changed by odin with the CSC file, which would change that partition. If you try to flash all the files, you get an error at 32% of "upgrading your system". I heard that there is a new version of odin that lets you flash the userdata file to switch carriers from a other forum, but it's not out right now. So waiting is the only option....
Here is a forum post for the S7 edge:

Just we'll have to wait till someone figures something out. On a side note, what's the most recent update? I'm on QD9 and I'm getting an update notification for the dqa OTA fix from Samsung but I can never download it. Probably because I'm using Verizon phone on TMobile...

The latest update is QD9 and if you want to check and install updates, you can download Smart Switch from Samsung's site. Then you go to more and software updates to make sure your phone is on the latest version. I'm also on T-Mobile with the Verizon model and hate that I dont the Voice Over LTE, Wifi Calling, 4x4 mimo, etc. So yea, we just have to wait for someone to figure this out.
Maybe I'm looking at the wrong thing but that Samsung switch program seem to be for transferring data from other phones so I didn't bother downloading it.

I thought the same thing but along with that you can perform software updates for any carrier. Also, I recommend d doing a backup if you want to flash another carrier when it is possible.
Wow that was a pain in the butt to install. Had to install a 2008 version of visual c++. Since I don't see an option to update the phone, is safe to assume there's no update then right? If so why do I always get the update notification?

I have the same version as you and don't get any update notification. Can you add a screenshot of the notification?
Sure I'll do it next time it shows up
Here's the screenshot. Comes up from time to time and it states it's too fix the dqa issue.

Hi there, do you get LTE with t-mobile on this Verizon unlocked version?
I am asking because I grabbed one as well and I am on at&t but I can't get LTE going. When I boot the phone, it is there but within minutes, it goes to HSPA+, I tried every which way. I called at&t, gave them my IMEI and everything but still no LTE unless I reboot my phone every 5 minutes.
Thanks
You need to have the correct APN settings. I believe Verizon has the most LTE bands so it should work with basically most of the world's providers.

Return for another one maybe? I tried it on my work ATT Sim before and it works fine for me.

Maybe I will get another sim card, even though the same sim card is working just fine on my iPhone without any issues.
Worth a shot.

You don't have the correct bands enabled with a Verizon model when using AT&T. Verizon only unlocks bands for it's network, but tmobile shares a couple of these bands and it's it as big of an issue. At&t does not share many bands with Verizon so the phone may be struggling to even find one LTE band. The only solution would be to flash the phone to AT&T firmware, which is impossible at the moment. (I Tried)

Is there a way to force a certain band that exists both on verizon and at&t? If I can't get this going, I might have to just sell the phone. I have couple more days of patience left

You would need to find the firmware of an AT&T s8 and flash the CP file (Modem) using odin. This should unlock the correct bands. I did this on my Verizon s8 as I use T-Mobile.

Hot spot tether on verizon OG unlimited plan question?

Hi everyone!
Has anyone been able to do a bypass on this phone to do the hot spot on the Grand Father veeizon unlimited plan? Thanks

It works out of the box. No tweaks are necessary.
I'm curious if unlocked X4 hotspot still works with Verizon OG/GUDP after Oreo update. I've done a thorough search, and haven't found an answer. I suppose I should ask the same about Pie, if anyone knows. Thanks.
Turns out the native hotspot does continue to work with Verizon OG/GUDP after Oreo update. I don't imagine anything would change with Pie, but who knows?
Native Hotspot works on Pie as well!

O...M...G.... Everywhere I read when trying to keep grandfathered truly unlimited Verizon data hotspot required unlocking bootloader, root, and using Magisk to disable carrier check. Since Moto X4 (Android One 64GB version - running Pie w/Jan 2019 patch) was one of the few that could still have its bootloader unlocked (and cheap), I went with this phone, planning to unlock and root. After doing some testing on the phone I was ready to go through the unlock bootloader process but found this post. So I just tapped the Hotspot button and viola, it worked! No pop-ups or warnings to subscribe to hotspot. It works just like my Moto XPE (or other phones prior to Oreo using Xposed/Moto Tether), hotspot right out of the box. Thank you so much for this post!!!! :good: So my question is, what newer phones still have this capability (native hotspot works without root)? It seems like the Pixel 3s do carrier check and you'd have to unlock bootloader and root. What about other Android One phones?

I was hoping someone would find this helpful, as I was coming up empty on anything recent regarding newer phones with native hotspot working with Verizon. I suppose there just isn't that many folk still on the old Verizon grandfathered unlimited. I should have followed up after my X4 received Pie and continued to work.
I held onto my rooted Droid Turbo for way to long and decided to take a chance on the X4 and was happy I did.
I couldn't tell you what other phones still work, but the last time I looked into it, the consensus was that non carrier specific unlocked Samsung phones would still allow native hotspot. I can't verify that, and not sure if that would have changed. Let us know if you find any, and I'll do the same.
Just the thread I'm looking for.
Also rooted with unlocked bootloader on Verizon grandfathered unlimited data plan.
Hotspot works fine as expected but for some reason I can't take a call and use hotspot simultaneously? I remember on the Moto X Pure there was some caveat regarding VoLTE or modifying the build prop?

Like I said, I'm stock Moto X Android One 64GB with a locked bootloader. I can do the native hotspot and can still make a call. I didn't change any phone settings so it would be the default setup.

Extremely helpful, a lifesaver, cause I was dreading not only unlocking and root but then trying to find an official Moto X4 image (and if I couldn't wait, try one of the Pie mods) and then trying Magisk to try to make sure I could still do Netflix, Android Pay, etc. as well as hotspot. I do hope Vz just leaves us "few" OG unlimited folks alone now (the last $30 to $50 monthly increase is still worth it to me as I use more than 50GB tethering a month anyway (and is not a hit on the battery at all) with two kids in the car using Netflix/Youtube etc and using my iPad as a second device at all times). I was prepared in 2013 to lose it, and so far, still have it :fingers-crossed:

Been searching for a fix for the past hour with no joy.
Still running unlocked and rooted stock, the hotpot does work but cuts over to 1xRTT when a phone call is in session.
Ensured that "HD Voice" (what Verizon calls VoLTE) was enabled. Simultaneous voice/data is supported by XT1900-1.
Do you have any "advanced calling" or some other similar option?
Nope

Downloaded an app called "Network Mode" from the Play Store. Sure enough "VoLTE Provisioned" was not enabled. After toggling this setting I have an "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode" option that is enabled.
HD Voice and simultaneous phone calls / hotspots are all now functioning.
