It works out of the box. No tweaks are necessary.

I'm curious if unlocked X4 hotspot still works with Verizon OG/GUDP after Oreo update. I've done a thorough search, and haven't found an answer. I suppose I should ask the same about Pie, if anyone knows. Thanks.

Turns out the native hotspot does continue to work with Verizon OG/GUDP after Oreo update. I don't imagine anything would change with Pie, but who knows?

Native Hotspot works on Pie as well!

O...M...G.... Everywhere I read when trying to keep grandfathered truly unlimited Verizon data hotspot required unlocking bootloader, root, and using Magisk to disable carrier check. Since Moto X4 (Android One 64GB version - running Pie w/Jan 2019 patch) was one of the few that could still have its bootloader unlocked (and cheap), I went with this phone, planning to unlock and root. After doing some testing on the phone I was ready to go through the unlock bootloader process but found this post. So I just tapped the Hotspot button and viola, it worked! No pop-ups or warnings to subscribe to hotspot. It works just like my Moto XPE (or other phones prior to Oreo using Xposed/Moto Tether), hotspot right out of the box. Thank you so much for this post!!!! :good: So my question is, what newer phones still have this capability (native hotspot works without root)? It seems like the Pixel 3s do carrier check and you'd have to unlock bootloader and root. What about other Android One phones?

I was hoping someone would find this helpful, as I was coming up empty on anything recent regarding newer phones with native hotspot working with Verizon. I suppose there just isn't that many folk still on the old Verizon grandfathered unlimited. I should have followed up after my X4 received Pie and continued to work.
I held onto my rooted Droid Turbo for way to long and decided to take a chance on the X4 and was happy I did.
I couldn't tell you what other phones still work, but the last time I looked into it, the consensus was that non carrier specific unlocked Samsung phones would still allow native hotspot. I can't verify that, and not sure if that would have changed. Let us know if you find any, and I'll do the same.

Just the thread I'm looking for.
Also rooted with unlocked bootloader on Verizon grandfathered unlimited data plan.
Hotspot works fine as expected but for some reason I can't take a call and use hotspot simultaneously? I remember on the Moto X Pure there was some caveat regarding VoLTE or modifying the build prop?

Like I said, I'm stock Moto X Android One 64GB with a locked bootloader. I can do the native hotspot and can still make a call. I didn't change any phone settings so it would be the default setup.

Extremely helpful, a lifesaver, cause I was dreading not only unlocking and root but then trying to find an official Moto X4 image (and if I couldn't wait, try one of the Pie mods) and then trying Magisk to try to make sure I could still do Netflix, Android Pay, etc. as well as hotspot. I do hope Vz just leaves us "few" OG unlimited folks alone now (the last $30 to $50 monthly increase is still worth it to me as I use more than 50GB tethering a month anyway (and is not a hit on the battery at all) with two kids in the car using Netflix/Youtube etc and using my iPad as a second device at all times). I was prepared in 2013 to lose it, and so far, still have it :fingers-crossed:

Been searching for a fix for the past hour with no joy.
Still running unlocked and rooted stock, the hotpot does work but cuts over to 1xRTT when a phone call is in session.
Ensured that "HD Voice" (what Verizon calls VoLTE) was enabled. Simultaneous voice/data is supported by XT1900-1.
Do you have any "advanced calling" or some other similar option?

Nope

Downloaded an app called "Network Mode" from the Play Store. Sure enough "VoLTE Provisioned" was not enabled. After toggling this setting I have an "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode" option that is enabled.
HD Voice and simultaneous phone calls / hotspots are all now functioning.

[Q] ROMs + Project Fi

What ROMs will work with Project Fi?
Do i need to stick with the stock ROM for it to function correctly?
All will work for you. One thing to make sure you do get is the Project Fi app. You may want to compile it into a zip you can install it with whatever ROM. Otherwise, you'll have to make sure you're on WiFi, so you can download it from Play Store.
all ROMs will work, BUT.. only the stock ROM if you want the WiFi calling, as that won't work on any ROM, except for stock.

why do you need to be on WiFi to download it from the play store?
Thanks for the info guys.
I'm going to run a self experiment on myself and turn Mobile Data off completely when i get my phone tomorrow, and see if i can go a month only using Wifi for data, just to see how difficult it would be to have the lowest possible phone bill.
I don't think "any rom" is the correct answer.
Since Sprint uses LMY47Z as their 5.1.1 build ID
And T-Mobile uses LYZ28E as their 5.1.1 build ID
Is there going to be a hybrid build of the 2 Factory Images?

you CAN use whichever factory image you want, they will work on any provider, same with the radios. if you are on tmo, you just might not get WiFi calling if using a different factory image. but that is stock, the op is talking about custom ROMs. all will work on project fi, but will not be able to do WiFi calling.

I'm going to take a wild guess here and say that you don't have Project Fi, and you are just guessing.
I'll just wait till my phone shows up and then post screenshots of everything stock so we have some actual proof on what factory image project fi is using.

that's the while point, anyone with a n6 can use project fi. it does not matter where the n6 was bought. your phone will not get a magic ota, it'll use whatever version you're already on.

because tmobile uses WiFi calling, and sprint doesn't. BTW, att and international users are getting the same build as sprint. anyways, on m, WiFi calling is included for all, but will only show up for tmo users or project fi users. yes, it'll probably be back to one build for all after lollipop.
WiFi calling is going to be in the stock image. I'd be more interested to see what part of that image is controlling the WiFi calling and switching between WiFi and two networks. Once that's isolated, I'd assume it could be baked into any ROM. My understanding was that the Project Fi app is just to monitor your account/usage/billing. But I'm not invited yet, so who knows.

Actually Google has their own Fi build for 5.1 (H) and has stated they are working on a Fi specific 5.1.1 build. People are getting carrier specific 5.1.1 OTAs on Fi though (only compounding the issues I've read regarding Fi and it's attempt to use two networks).

If you're on the Fi build I don't believe it lets you take carrier updates. In theory, Fi updates should roll out first. Ehhh Google
I just tested Fi with today's Chroma build. After installing the Fi app it connected to cell network. Everything worked fine except for the fact that I was stuck on Sprint. I normally land on T-Mobile. I doubt the network auto switching or open WiFi connect would work. I expected all this but decided to try anyway.

did you try any of the dialer codes to force network to switch ?
After an uninstall/reinstall of the Fi app and a reboot I was able to get back onto T-Mobile. I'm not sure if it will auto switch to Sprint. I'm in a good T-Mobile coverage area and never even saw the stock ROM switch.

Is your unlocked N8 provisioned for VZW?

I just got off the phone with VZW. My HD calling, video calling and visual voicemail isn't working. Not sure if the CSR was right, but she said there is an advance calling setting on the VZW N8 that I couldn't find on my unlocked Sammy N8. I have seen it before on my S8+ so I know What she is talking about.
I said maybe mine isn't provisioned correctly. She said she wasn't sure. I am going to call back tomorrow to speak with tech support.
You guys have that stuff working?

You don't have those features because you have unlocked software on your phone. The unlocked software loses carrier features. Once the Verizon software is released, you can flash the verizon software with Odin to get Verizon apps and features.
The difference between Verizon and Unlocked phones is the software.
This is crazy, Sammy said unlocked is fully compatible with VZW. Killing me!!

I think your best bet is to either find someone who is willing to swap with you their VZ variant with your Unlocked version. Or I would just change firmware to VZ version. Updato already has the VZ firmware, just flash away.

This was the specific reason why I went with the VZW variant. I had an unlocked Moto Z and I dl'd the NFL app. Didn't work.
VZW tech support said that its a locked app to phones from the carrier. Any unlocked phones lost this feature and others. SUCH A PAIN.
I had an unlocked pixel xl and everything worked fine.
This may help for people looking for video calling
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-8/how-to/guide-to-enabling-video-calling-t3670523
I promise that I'm not trying to be rude here. But what did you guys think you were buying when you bought an unlocked phone? It's carrier unlocked. Which means it comes without carrier software. With that you may also lose some carrier specific features. But it also works with pretty much any carrier. So you can switch carriers and take your phone with you.
Personally, I never experienced a difference with HD calling. I also never used video calling. Wi-Fi calling is the only thing if kinda like to have back. I've seen some people say they've found ways to get it back on other phones. I'm not sure what those methods are.

Did you have your sim inserted when you first booted up your phone by chance? On the s8 I had this issue because I didn't have the sim in during first boot. Had to fact reset with sim card in place to get properly provisioned.
Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
What do you mean by provisioned? And how did you get the visual voice mail app
?
I switched my Verizon line from my V20 over to my Unlocked Note8 yesterday afternoon and have no issues that really bother me. When I called the Verizon number to swap phones I asked about WiFi calling, VoLTE and HD calling and the representative told me all of these are enabled and should work properly even though the phone is Unlocked, we checked and we just couldn't find the WiFi calling setting in my device to see if it works. I have never used WiFi calling and really don't care about it, when I make a phone call everything sounds nice and crisp so I assume HD calling is working fine and VoLTE also works great. I did have 2 questions though...
1.) In the My Verizon app it keeps telling me I need a code to access my account? (see attached)
2.) When I get a voicemail, I have no notification. Is this because the "Visual Voicemail" app doesn't exist? Is there a workaround for this?
I used pf voicemail plus to replace my visual voice mail and that works fine

Video Calling Missing on Sprint

Yes, I searched the Sprint Note 8 forum. So, I have a buddy with a T-Mob Note 8. He tried to video call me. Nothing happened. So, I went looking for the N8 manual. If you get the manual from T-Mob or VZN, they show an icon of a video camera on the dialer screen, to the left of the call button. We lucky Sprint customers have our vm icon there. WTF?! Are we the onlyN8 owners that can't do video calls? Is this because we don't (yet) have Sprint's version of "VoLTE?" Do any of you who bought an unlocked N8, running on Sprint, have this problem? Thanks for any light you can shed on this problem.
I don't know but the more time I spend with a stock note I think I could do. Perhaps my first non rooted phone since flip phones. Still got time to make the change top Verizon or AT&T... You know and actually have a useable network...

I actually think you're right. This phone is great without rooting. Perhaps if we get the U version of software available for the Note 8, that might be worth flashing.

I'm trying to parse your dilemma here.
Video calling works just fine depending on what video calling service you're trying to use. There's a myriad of them out there, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Hangouts...just to mention a few.
As far as i know, there's no native interoperable carrier-to-carrier plain-jane video calling (like native SMS, for example).
Just saying "video calling" doesn't work, or that your T-Mobile buddy couldn't video call you doesn't tell us much. Was your T-Mobile buddy using any of the aforementioned video calling apps/services?
I video call family on 3 continents using either WhatsApp or FB Messenger (on iOS and Android) just fine.
My note 8 came with google DUO. I thought that was androids version of Facetime.

I guess you can refer to it as such, although Hangouts predates Duo. But for you to "Duo" someone else, they have to be using Duo as well.
If Sprint included its own video calling option, I imagine it would only work with other Sprint users, anyway. Just use one of the many video calling apps that your friends have and can use.

Weirdly that call had to begin on Wi-Fi and it would be a seamless transition to cellular data right?
Apparently the note will get that same feature, but who's to say how long until it does?

Wow, and here I was thinking XDA members were smarter than that..... Just so you'll know in the future : each carrier's network varies depending on your location. That's right! How they perform in your town isn't the same as how they perform everywhere else in the US!
Where I live, just outside of Atlanta, Sprint is has the best coverage and fastest speeds. AT&T and Verizon are gradually improving, while T-Mobile is still a joke.
The more you know....
Sprint will update for VoLTE as soon as available like they did for S8 but Sprint does not have built in video calling like T-Mobile...after trying to force the setting, it still doesn't work because there is no app...with T mobile, there is a hidden app that links to the setting...Google duo, hangout, Skype are the only options so far

I have an unlocked sprint phone, looking at the dial screen, the button to the left is for sms. I believe this is one of the many things sprint has never supported.
The Note 8 feature for Sprint Video Calling is still unavailable and Sprint customer care had no answers for me! The video caller icon should be on the dialer not the voicemail icon

How to Enable WiFi Calling Option - Note 9 Unlocked (SM-N960U1) - VoLTE Setup

Note 9 unlocked SM-N60U1 doesn't have the option to enable Wifi calling or anyway to setup VoLTE on the device. The option which is available on all other versions of this phone and other Samsung phones like S9+, S8+, Note 8, Note 9 etc. is not available in this Note 9 (SM-N960U1) version
This is a real disappointment after spending more than a thousand dollar on a premium flagship Samsung phone and you find out that a basic calling function is intentionally disabled by Samsung when it is available on all other versions of the same phone. The expectation when you buy an unlocked version is that it is compatible with all the carriers and can be used freely with all without any limitation.
I have been trying to find a way to enable Wifi Calling on this unlocked Samsung Note 9 and enable VoLTE on this device but so far have been unsuccessful.
Please someone direct me to a way to enable Wifi calling on this unlocked Note 9, would greatly appreciate it.
WiFi calling is the only thing that works on the U1 for me.

it's been discussed multiple times already - to enable these extras you need to flash a carrier specific firmware, basically convert your N960U1 to N960U.
See for example: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...ocked-samsung-note-9-finally-verizon-t3834685
Interesting, I guess that's a departure from their s9+, where U1 came outta the box with wifi calling enabled and working perfectly fine.

How does yours have that option? Mine does not have this option. See the screenshot attached.

It's probably the network not allowing that menu to appear on yours. I was reading a few posts on the Canadian note 9 thread. Seems like some carriers over there limit certain functionality unless you bought their branded model. That thread is a worth a look if you haven't seen it already.

Yes and it's sad. Look at the screenshots of my S9+ Call settings which was bought unlocked directly from Samsung. All the options are enabled.

I'll look for the thread. But I doubt it. The carriers can limit the use of an option but can't just remove the option from the phone.
I have S8+ and S9+ both bought directly from Samsung and both had all the options enabled even before I put any sim in them. Check the screenshots of the S9+ it has all the options enabled and infact was using wifi calling at the time I took the screenshots.

Thanks I'll look into that. But I wonder wouldn't this method cause Knox problems. And will I be able to use secure folder, dual copies of apps, Samsung Pay etc. etc.?

Everything will work, only you will lose Samsung Spam CallerID feature. No Knox problem, Samsung Pay continues to work.
And you will get your carrier boot animation - for some this is a showstopper.

Spam caller ID is already disabled in this unlocked version just like WiFi calling and VoLTE. But if every thing works then it's worth a try. What about if I flash the Canadian Unlocked Note 9 version? Is that a possibility?

Those features are obviously disabled due to the sim card you are using. You know why I say this? Because I'm using a U1 model on Sprint USA and those two features are available to me. Spam caller and wifi calling.

The unlocked versions of S9+ and S8+ which I have has these enabled by default with the same carrier sim. See the screenshot.
VoLTE
I have the SM-N960U1, with Verizion sim and it's enabled on my phone.

Yes it is. 960U1 carrier/factory unlocked user on USA AT&T here. I was researching this WiFi Calling feature situation and installed Quickshortcutmaker that located what appears to be the stock Samsung Wifi Calling app Version 6.2.06.02 on the phone with com.sec.unifiedwfc, .att, .vzw, and .sprint etc. The app would not open. Permissions issues. Enabled permissions. Nope.
It is my understanding that the 960U1 carrier/factory unlocked has WiFi Calling capability but that activation is carrier dependent and AT&T is a no go. AND YET when AT&T tried to provision WiFi Calling on this device it did not work. Could someone explain why this app/feature will not work even with AT&T pushing activation? I do not want to flash the phone with the 960U firmware. Thanks!

Rogers is notorious for this
Ok couldn't find any way to enable Wifi Calling on the US unlocked version SM-N960U1 except to flash or change the CSC to a desired carrier. I didn't wanted to go that route but had no other choice.
So I got the Canadian Globelive and Freedom Mobile version of firmware SM-N960W from sammobile and flashed it completely through odin. Now all the functions of the Note 9 are available for any carrier. See the attached screenshots. There is no crapware or bloatware on it very clean and stock as it could be.
Now all is working

So basically the unlocked SM-N960U1 is not completely unlocked you would need to flash a more unlocked version of the firmware on it. Like I flashed the Canadian SM-N960W from Freedom Mobile. Then you can use it with any carrier that has enabled wifi calling for you.
I used to care about wifi calling but no call recorders work on wifi calling so I just forget it. it's nice to have call recording like hotel confirmation numbers.

Same here. I'd rather like to be able to use the stock Samsung messaging app with RCS functionality. The U1 versions don't support it however. Currently using Android messaging unfortunately.

Unlocked Variant TMobile band 71 and WiFi Calling Support

Does anybody know if the Unlocked version will support these features. They were sold out of the TMobile one when I went to order so I went unlocked. After contact with a few reps from TMobile and Samsung they seem to have no idea what will actually work... So I have a hard time believing what they say. Band 71 was a big selling point for me on upgrading and I hope I didn't make a mistake going with an unlocked device.
I order the Unlocked Snapdragon for T-mobile and all usa bands including 71 will be there as far I as can tell... We need to get our hands on some of these for testing.
The s9+ unlocked supports it so I dont know why the s10 wouldn't

My only reason for concern is that Samsung and Tmobile are giving me information stating it won't, they (Samsung) even told me WiFi calling won't work (even though it shows it will on the samsung support site)
I read that all of this worked fine on the s9, it just seems odd that they are saying it won't... especially band 71.
Just got my s10 plus and I see no options for wifi calling or volte. Me thinks I should have gone with the T-Mobile carrier brand. Anyone know how to flash a T-Mobile firmware to an unlocked Galaxy phone?

My unlocked definitely has wifi calling. It will not allow me to take a screenshot due to security in that section.

Where are you looking because if your looking in settings for wifi calling your in the wrong place. Open the phone app and look in its settings. At least that is where it is in the s9+ unlocked

My S10 unlocked on T-Moblile has wifi calling but not VoLTE. Bkeaver is correct that you need to open your phone app and check the 3-dot upper right corner menu for the wifi calling setting.

My unlocked S10e has WiFi Calling on T-Mobile. You may not find settings for VoLTE settings, but it works too.
When I first put my sim card in, the phone told me that it would restart to setup a carrier. It did, then I saw that quick setting panel added new button "wifi calling" and I tested it right away, including VoLTE

VoLTE works too, I just can't find settings, but it is enabled by default on my T-Mobile sim
Based on Charkatak's post, I searched and found the following site: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-4988 which says in part: VoLTE (Voice over LTE) allows you to place and receive calls on our LTE data network, and it's available nationwide. Placing a call connects twice as fast.
Switching between 4G VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling does not drop a call. So I tried placing a call without wifi using LTE and switched to wifi. The call stayed connected. Hoping this indicates we have VoLTE.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you can test VoLTE by making a call and then checking which antennas you're connected to. If you are only on LTE towers you should have VoLTE enabled. I did this test and it seems to be working for me.
Can confirm VoLTE and Wifi Calling works fine on T-Mobile with an unlocked S10 with Snapdragon.

Yup. VoLTE is voice over LTE, so no need to involve wifi. Devices without it simply fail to connect, or switch to 2G/3G automatically (when available).
Samsung has a compatibility chart, and VoLTE was already listed for tmobile.

Excellent news! :good:
I think I already know the answer, but I'm throwing this out there: the unlocked version doesn't come with the native ability to do multi-line for DIGITS. Clearly specific to the U firmware for T-Mobile. Has anyone happened to see a fix for this...like a T-Mobile CSC for S10, or something?
I mean, the DIGITS app still allows me access to my second line, but I'd obviously MUCH prefer the T-Mobile integrated solution in the dialer.

Yes the unlocked version absolutely can do digits. It is not specific to the U version. I have the unlocked version of the s9 + and had digits going for my Galaxy watch with no issues.

I went to TMobile yesterday to setup my new Galaxy Watch. I guess They set up Digits to my line #, but gave me a new number for the watch line at $10/mo. They told me I don't use that new number, and it's only for the main# to forward to..
