I have a Moto X Developer Edition rooted on Verizon with TWRP 2.6.3.1 and stock Android 4.4 on it. I have been trying to upgrade to 4.4.2 without doing the OTA, and without having to reflash TWRP.
So far, I have been unsuccessful.
I have tried Blur_Version.140.45.5.ghost_verizon.Verizon.en.US.zip (approximate file size 150MB) from multiple sources as all the posts I read keep saying that is what works. I have also tried a ~650MB version I found somewhere. In addition, I tried the upgrade located here: sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0 which is called VZW_XT1060_4.4.2-KXA20.16-1.25.2_CFC_1FF.xml.zip (It's the 4.4.2 upgrade listed under Verizon US).
All of these fail. In TWRP, about 2-3 steps after it verified md5, it simply says "Failed" with no explanation as to why.
Here is my question:
How can I upgrade to 4.4.2 without a data wipe, and without having to reflash TWRP?
I have no interest in going to a ROM, I want to stay stock, and if I must, I will reflash the recovery if I have to, but I *really* don't want to.
Flash stock recovery, take the OTA, flash TWRP again.
It's so simple, so painless, so quick and it will not wipe your data.

I was hoping to avoid that (Yep, I really am that lazy...) but that's what I was going to do tonight if I couldn't get my hands on a .zip to flash.
Ironically, I bought the Dev Edition specifically so things like this would be easy.
It is easy.....just need to do it.
I support my sister, her husband and my wife (as well as my own) who all have Moto X's. 2 seconds to flash recovery, however long it takes for the OTA to install and reboot and then 2 seconds to flash TWRP again. Heck...I'd just leave the stock recovery in place since it's not needed if you don't plan on flashing any ROMs. The OTA doesn't even remove root.

Oh, that last bit is good to know! Well, I think even if it did remove root, getting it back is easy on the DE.
I think you're right though, I probably won't install TWRP again, I specifically got the Moto X because I was tired of messing around with stuff when I all I want is a rooted, stock Android experience.
So, after several hours of messing with this, and thinking the stock recovery had gotten messed up because the instructions I had for getting in to it were wrong, I finally got the OTA installing...
and it fails.
I don't know why, I haven't seen the error (I'm not looking at the phone when it fails).
So... Awesome.

Are there files out so you can just flash 4.4.2 with mfastboot? Would be easiest.

I assume so, but I haven't found any instructions specifically saying how to do that, except for the ones that tell you how to return to stock without using RSD Lite.
Unfortunately, I don't know enough about how all this stuff works to be able to figure out which bits and pieces to put together to get upgraded without wiping my data.
What really pisses me off is that I specifically bought this phone so I wouldn't have issues like this, and here I am...
BTW: The only thing the error says is "Error". That's it, nothing else.

This guide has a return to stock section. It will tell you how to flash the stock firmware.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2603358
Unfortunately the moto x is not a simple phone for tinkering with, like say a nexus, even the dev edition.
It can be easier once you do fully understand everything. Just gotta know what applies to you...meaning mostly the locked versus unlocked methods for everything.
After owning an s2, a moto x and now an n5 (n7 too...but I don't tinker with it really....its a family device) I've come to the mind set that for flashers and rooters.....nothing at all beats owning a nexus. Every other device has some limitations that a nexus won't have.

Yeah, that's the page I was talking about when I said I found the full instructions...
I specifically bought this phone because I didn't want to mess around with it like this, I just wanted to root it so I could use Titantium Backup and be done with it... and now I'm stuck at a halfway point.... Again...
I'll probably end up just doing the full wipe and manually flash to 4.4.2 (RSD Lite doesn't see my device... yay), since I have gone from my mute button not working (with 4.2.2), to a really bad echo for whomever I'm talking to when it's on speakerphone (Even when speakerphone is muted... THAT made for a fun conference call...).

Flashing stock and rooting on an unlocked Moto x is basically the same as a nexus. It really is simple, once you are familiar with fastboot.
I guess there are toolkits that automate everything....like Samsung's Odin, and there's a few for nexus....but it really doesn't help anyone learn. And that's kinda what this hobby is all about.
But, I am sorry you're having trouble. Not sure what else to add. The guides are there, and they work. Usually. I can't think of anything to add to whats already been said.
Hope it works out for you!

I don't think I'm articulating my issue properly. I understand how to do everything in the guides you mentioned, they're a piece of cake. That doesn't solve my problem.
My problem is that I want to get to 4.4.2 WITHOUT wiping my data, but can't do the update via OTA or flashing in recovery. RSD Lite doesn't work either.
The ONLY option I have available to me is to manually push the update with fastboot, which I can definitely do with the instructions provided... But those instructions require me to wipe my data.
I know it's possible to apply the update with fastboot without requiring me to wipe my data, but I don't know enough about the inner workings to know which steps to skip, and which need to be modified, in order to make that happen.

It says right at the bottom of the return to stock section in the guide I linked too.....you can skip
Fastboot erase user data
fastboot erase cache
Though if you have any problems after, you might have to do it again and do erase those, before spending time trying to figure out what's wrong.

Sorry about that, when I looked through that article, I skimmed through and saw that the "Return to Stock" section was (almost) identical to the other instructions I was reading...But I missed that last paragraph when I looked at the link you provided, the directions I was using referenced that article but did not include that last bit...

And, you may very well have issues doing that way. But its worth a shot first. If you do have issues, then you can erase those and repeat the process.
if using fastboot/mfastboot, I would still erase cache, as it doesn't touch your data/apps/config.
Another tip, use this mfastboot -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/X-STUFF/Mfastboot-4.4.zip
or you can use RSDlite to flash the SBF, but there is a corresponding line for "erase data"

Alrighty, well I was able to successfully flash to 4.4.2 using the Fastboot instructions. Flashed TWRP afterwards and got root right back. Now that I know, this won't be a trial in the future (fingers crossed!)

Hey guys,
I had whats seems to be a hardware bug on my nexus and amazon is going to give me a 1-to-1 exchange for free but i want to know how to restore everything back to stock att. I have unfortunally (now) deleted the OEM partition and want to know how to get everything back to the way it would be out of the att store. If the OEM was the only difference from the factory image, i can copy the files from the new nexus when it gets here .
EDIT: Sorry for the stupid title. ATT shouldnt be there twice

Hi all. I could use some help with this issue I've been having. Basically, about a week ago, I went on a trip to Colorado and at the same time had an issue with my data through VM. After talking to them, I had to change my service plan. Since then I haven't been able to maintain any kind of connection with VM; it reads no service a lot, even in places I've never had an issue (home, school, practically everywhere...). Before I deal with VMs customer service yet again, I wanted to see if there is any issues with my phone/rom/kernel and any updates to either I could use.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/desire-510/help/how-to-treat-sd-internal-storage-t3029186
I used this guide to root my phone and install all that stuff in order to use my sd card as my internal storage. So, could there be some issue with that wHich could cause me to not be able to get any service? Is there anything I could do on my side to determine if the problem is with my phone?
If the issue lies with VMs network, are there any updates to the kernel or roms with newer versions of Android that I could use and still use my sd card as my main storage? Side question: on any rooted device, could you do the ad card as main memory thing with the apps, Apparted and Link2sd?
Thanks anyone who can help me out.
Edit: I'm running Android 4.4.2
Kernel version
3.4.0-Missed-Kernel-v2.6.1

Alright, tried that, too, now. Still a no-go.
I'm not sure if I have a custom rom, but I don't think so. I just followed that guide, and I believe it only needed me to install a custom kernel. This thing acts weird. I'll pick it up and unlock it, and it will have 5 bars, but then quickly jump down to 1 then no service. As I'm driving to class, I'll have 4-5 bars but when I get to school, it's gone. It feels like whenever there are WiFi signals, I lose my service connection, if that helps.
Thank you so much, btw.

Hmm, definitely going to try this tonight. I've now tried to revert to my stock image, and things just haven't gone well since then. So, since I've already removed or backed up all data, should I just wipe everything (data, system, boot, cache, dalvik, etc), flash root, flash custom kernel, then restore this rom? That way, everything is fresh with no chance of interferences?

No flashing anything the boot/kernel is already in the folder just wipe and restore no using custom kernels there's already a custom kernel in it. It already has root access you do not even need a computer to do this just download extract and move the modded folder to twrps backup folder and restore. This is a full custom modified CyanogenMod 11.. Not stock rom at all.

Okay, wow. I really like this, man. It's really slick. But, sadly, I'm still SOL. Sometimes there is a connection with VM, but it goes away quickly. I've really appreciated your help, but the problem seems to lay on VMs side, or there is a physical problem in my phone preventing it from maintaining a connection.
Im going to try to deal with their customer service and see if they can do anything. In the end, the phone only cost me $50, I guess. If I get it worked out, I'll post what it was about so you may be able to help the next guy with the issue, lol.

Lol that's definitely gotta be VM's side then.. I'm on VM to but let me ask you a question... Is that a pay as you go, like 1 monthly payment or is it prepaid? If it's the monthly payment then ask VM to reprovision the phone but restore back to your stock backup before calling.

It's their $35/month unlimited plan. I just got off the phone with them after 1.5 hours, so not that long, lol. They claim there is a cell tower being worked on, and everything should clear up in 48-72 hours....and yet I can't get a stable signal 20 miles away at school, so it sounds like a rote answer when they have no clue. On the other hand, my wife's S2 barely gets a signal, too.
They are going to comp my for the 2 weeks it's been down, tho. If after this weekend there isn't any improvment....wwell, I'll figure something out, I guess.

Lol, I've figured that one out when they told me that a couple months ago, I called back the next day and asked about the tower and they told me there was no record of any tower problems. Yeah, she's on VM also, with a Samsung S2, completely stock. When I check her signal, she has a connection, but it's low, around -100 to -120 dba.

Hey Mike. I hate to bother you again, especially since I've been reading how much you've been dealing with other people, so I think I know how to do this, I just would like to run this by you to make sure I have it right.
I'm going to try to have VM replace my phone, so I need it back to looking clean.
1) So, I need to relock the bootloader first. I first "fastboot oem lock" in cmd, then.
2) I DL the RUU from HTC's site, specifically the VM 1.49.652.3 file.
3) While still in fastboot usb, I run the RUU repeatedly till it completes
4) Go back to hboot and do a factory reset.
Thanks man. I've tried to read things through, but I want to make sure it'll be clean if they do replace it.
Edit: Wait, I just saw someone said to input "fastboot oem rebootRUU" then run the RUU.

Just relock the bootloader then flash the stock recovery and then run the RUU from the PC but you don't need to factory reset after that because the RUU is the reset.

Obviously you haven't done a proper clean flash. I've flashed every rom available and no fcs. Only time I've had signal trouble was with att(gsm). Never lost signal, would just go from 2 bars to none then back again, but never lost signal.
Oh, search pe thread for my name to see the correct way to flash.

I don't know what to say. I boot into twrp, wipe dalvik, cache, system, data and then I flash the rom. Once I boot, I have the service issue. Could it be not flashing gapps?

1 - gapps has nothing to do with signal
2 - you seem to flash like most others here, I don't, and don't have issues they do.
3 - info was posted, follow it, or don't. Up to you.
4 - Best of luck!

Can you link the thread that you were talking about how to flash properly? I can't seem to find it. Sorry if I came off as brash, was just a little frustrated at my own mistakes.

Sorry man, but I'm not much of a spoon feeder - give a man a fish etc etc.
Get some sleep - relax - tackle it tomorrow - maybe without the frustrating you will find what you need to see (it is right there).
Riddle me this - a rom is a rom and as a rom a rom can be found in the ___ section. Simple isn't it.
Have a good night!

Hey, after decrypting my phone and using the method you posted in the pe thread to flash roms, I am still getting service problems. I've also noticed that anytime I have tried to open carrier settings on the phone, I get a ".com.android.phone has stopped." So I cant update the prl at all. I've seen people post about modifying the APN settings but I thought that was irrelevant on sprint. I'm honestly out of ideas.

Well, when nothing helps, it's time to go back to stock.
Get firmware for your location - different firmware (modem especially) for different markets.
Don't use any "tools" or .bat files you find here and flash with fastboot - do 1 command at a time and note results, (remove sim before flashing and reinsert after you've booted into stock once).
See what happens. Sometimes things get messed up enough to where flashing stock is the only thing to do. That'll really clean it out.
I had a real funky issue when going from att to vz. Spent hours with straight talk trying to sort it out (had 4g but no calls or texts). Flashed stock - popped sim in - bang - everything working, and has been ever since and I've flashed them all, some several times, still good.

When I first got my xt1806 I didn't load a Sim card in it when I powered it up, I immediately unlocked the bootloader, installed recovery, flashed a ROM and just used WiFi for a few days with no issues. But once I did put a new Sim in it I noticed all I could get was 3g - and with every other ROM I installed all I could get was 3g no matter what I tried. The only solution was to fastboot flash back to stock, install the Sim, power it up, & let it "register"(send a text or make a call & also verify 4g works) with the network. I'm not saying you did the same thing I did, but the fix should be flashing back to stock.
*Copy your internal memory somewhwere before you reflash stock in case everything gets wiped.
*I'm on Verizon btw, so my experience may or may not apply to Sprint.
Sprint problems with 4g
I know this isn't my thread but I shall try anyway. I have the Sprint version of the g5 s plus. I have tried every way of flashing a rom that I can think of (all wipes rom then gapps magisk, magisk then gapps, rom and no gapps or magisk, etc.). I cannot manage to keep 4g after flashing. I have backed up my efs with twrp and tried restoring it. Nothing. I've used fastboot to flash nhlos erase modems1&2 flash fsg. I tried *#*#463whatever to turn it back on and nothing. I've checked all settings and tried all things I know of. Still nothing. The only way I can get/keep 4g is by using stock rooted which I hate. . Is this just a specific problem to my type of phone or is there something I'm missing? Is there a different firmware or modem I could use or something? Any thoughts or ideas would be great cause I'm stumped.
Hi,
Would anybody be willing to upload the stock recovery from the At&t Razer Phone 2 please.
I would really appreciate it. I'm trying to work on some more for this phone.
Thank you
I know another att variant guy captured the newest pie zip URL and I downloaded it. The recovery lives in the boot.img right?
Were AT&T the ones that sent you the THX model? Or did you buy it straight from Razer?
I'll find that URL and past it here. I've extracted the previous Oreo update from the att build prior to moving to the global version. I had to capture the URL from a log, then downloaded it, then extracted it then I had to use python to fully extract pieces of the payload. Which included the boot.img.
Not a developer but I think I can help here.
Here's the URL for pie July security for att:
https://android.googleapis.com/pack.../2965f0fadb65852413dba10a4fed1029ecce838f.zip
This will help you extract the payload.bin in the zip:

I'll pull out my old dumpy laptop. Good one is at work. I'll see if I can extract the boot.img.

Hey bud,
Thank you for the extracted image. I really appreciate it. I fixed my laptop this morning and extracted the whole payload.bin with python. I'm currently doing research on the partitions. I'm also trying to figure out why the arter97 r10 kernel won't boot with at&t latest update. Just hangs at boot. It installs nicely with global. Again thank you very much for your time and effort.

Hmm I wonder what I'm doing wrong. I followed the exact steps I did on the global firmware. Is their something I'm missing. Mine just sits at boot animation. What's your steps if you don't mind me asking bud.
Thank you

Not at all. Of course I unlocked both bootloader and critical.
Then I've extracted the AT&T Oreo file on Razers website into my adb folder and run the flash all .bat file. After first boot I allow it to update to latest Pie update. Are you on AT&T?? I'm the one that posted the captured OTA link.
@JDBarlow Yes I'm on latest At&T. I've had it working a few days ago but switched to global for a minute to do a vendor/system comparison. Now I can't get it to work again. Thank you for the it's captured link bud. I've done the same thing you did but my phone came development unlocked with different recovery setup. I backed up all of my development firmware.

@kountry83 I know bro I'm patiently waiting on someone (dev) to step up and take this device on..I love it man has so much potential if we had more development :good:
Nice to see someone taking a swing at it. So tired of people trash talking this phone, when it's capable of so much. I'm not a dev but seems to me that this phone would be easy to tinker with since Razer pretty much begs you to. Welp I guess JD and I will be here to test anything or help any way we can. I've really only seen him and one other dude using this phone on att. Openly that is. I ended up on global cause I hated waiting on att to release pie update.
JD, how's your cell connection quality? I can literally stare at my signal and it drops out completely from 3 bars or so. Maybe I could flash the modem.img to see if the basebands are different? I might just flash the Oreo att firmware them let it update, then flash arter kernel, then flash magisk zip within arter twrp to get root.

@jonchance_84 Honestly I've gotten such great reception in my area I haven't even diagnosed that. I can pay more attention to it and see what happens. We actually get the 5G Evo in our area..
The flashing sequence you stated above is the exact order I've done mine twice now and everything works very well!!
Edit: I don't get the 5Ge on the Razer 2.. didn't want you to think that ?

I'm not even a mile from i-20 in East Texas. This is all I get on lte, but the weird thing is that never settles in.
@jonchance_84 I live in East Texas too! I got a little land, log cabin, man cave, and guest house that use to be a bed and breakfast lol. Love this country living. I'm on T-Mobile.

Nice! Other than the heat right now, love it here. I work in IT for an oil and gas company. Starting to tinker more with Android as a hobby. Last phone was a Nexus 6. Always been able to flash, follow directions with no problem, but the dev side seems a bit tricky.
@JDBarlow
I just did the same thing you did with the at&t update and booted up to setup. Then booted to bootloader then flashed arter boot.img to both a and b. Tried to boot back to setup and hangs on boot animation. Don't get why I'm having a hard time getting this to boot off this kernel. Ugh

That's just freaking crazy lol I'm in East Texas too
Instead of flashing the kernel to both slots try ONLY <fastboot flash boot arter97.img> then reboot before installing magisk
Edit: the last time did this flashing sequence I actually booted to recovery right after installing arter97 installed magisk then booted to system
@jonchance_84 no errors. @JDBarlow just tried that also. Don't know what's going on here. I think it might be a little different hardware and software wise.

Maybe he isn't setup with the a/b scheme?
Edit: Maybe the arter kernel isn't compatible with some hardware that's different? Causing kernel panic which results in bootloop? It's gotta be something simple though. Otherwise the att firmware wouldn't even boot at all.
