With slight modifications. For example it has the public keys which match the update package signature. I mean no recovery recompilation was involved, so it's still the stock one. (well almost)

I see and this actually works? I have tried something similar myself, but I could never get the package to flash correctly.

you just need to do the signing and partition mounting correctly and then it works everytime
Any chance of you wonderful developers working on a custom recovery? Would gladly be a tester if you needed one.

Hi,
For those of you who don't know , flashing an Aosp source built ROM that was compiled with the command " make otapackage" will break and overwrite your custom recovery (for example Twrp).
But I came up with a fix for it when i saw that Scroler made a script to fix this problem for the Nexus 7 (2013) .
I modified it to work on the Nexus 4.
You only need to flash this in recovery as a zip file just after you flash your ROM.
So for example you would flash your ROM, the Don't_lose_Recovery. zip and after your gapps.
With this script your good to go and you will keep your beloved custom recovery.
Please note that I tested the script with Twrp and not with Clockworkmod recovery since I don't use this one.
Don't forget to hit the thanks button.
Happy flashing.
Link for the script : https://mega.co.nz/#!3wxB2azJ!nBoVqsrDWmfGDHP-egRt_Fwy3b2rRrseMSUPrj1PWzY
Thanks to Scroler for guiding me
Check out my Nexus 4 Aosp ROM here http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/development/rom-t2931659
Sent from my Nexus 4.
Thank you !
Can't you just remove the recovery from the zip....along with the line that flashes it from the updater script?
Its also easy to fastboot a recovery back when no one removes it from zips....

It's not as easy as " if it break something I will remove it and everything will be fine", unfortunately.
But now this fix is built into my rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2931659so there is one less zip to flash.

Is this a new 5.0 thing?? I've been flashing for quite a long time and I've literally never heard of this happening before.

A clean aosp build will produce the recovery also. Its as easy as deleting it, and the corresponding lines from updater-script or using the git commits to not include it...

Here's a one click method to unlock 26A & 27A with a bumped TWRP recovery.
Special thanks to Team Codefire for bump and WACOMalt for TWRP.
Before you can flash any rom after this, the boot.img must be bumped first on any rom you want to use. As time passes, you'll probably see all the ROM's bumped. If the rom you want to use is not BUMPED, don't use this.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
WARNING: IF THE BOOT IMAGE IS NOT BUMPED ON 27A BY THE DEV OR YOU ON THE ROM YOU WANT TO FLASH, THEN YOU WILL NOT BOOT.
To bump your boot.img, go here:

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Here's the one click Freedom Bump TWRP. Must be rooted on 26a or 27a with stump root and dev usb debugging enabled. For stump root click here: STUMP

Keeps running until eventually it says device unsupported
Nice to finally be on the full 26a bootstack with twrp.
By the sound of it after this you'll wanna flash your chosen thermally governed twrp, assuming you can update to a non bumped twrp. Is that possible micro, or will flashing different twrp break it?

Yes. This only changes recovery.img.
Looks like BUMP project got closed as it was hacked. Do not use this till bumping a boot.img is made possible again. Used Freedom 24a instead.

Do you mean, it is dangerous, because it came from un-trusted source?

hopefully someone's working on one. If I knew how I would.

If I want to flash it as my primary I would have done it when it was released.
I want to test it as a secondary rom using MultiROM.
It supports only flashable zip.

How about getting facts correct? There is in fact, T817T, T817W, T817P, T817R4, T817V, T817A.
I have had no luck flashing firmware from the SM-T817W to my SM-T817T. Odin fails at sboot. I have pulled it over to SuperR and tried both stock and custom builds. They both boot loop. I am very new to this. This forum so far has been more than helpful in my quest for knowledge.

You can flash ALL factory firmware images with TWRP. The only one I haven't been able to add is sboot.bin. However you don't need to flash that.
I have tried flashing the images from the md5 file i downloaded but that didnt work. I hate to be a bother but any further advice would be appreciated.
I'm curious what your end goal is....

Thanks for yourr patience and assistance first of all.
I flashed the system.img and boot.img from my tar file using twrp. But when I go to reboot twrp warns me there is no os installed. Sure I am missing a step.
are there any custom roms currently out that can be flashed on the t817t? As long as Wi-Fi works, I can live without lte.

It may be that the T817T has a different system partition size to the T815 which would cause that issue.
It's is possible to adjust the image size which would make it flash.
Might just be easier to flash a custom T815 rom.

Probably. Custom roms flash via update zip in custom recovery.
Just make sure you have twrp for the T815 and make a backup first in case of issues.

Thanks in advance. I want to install a custom rom on T817 tmobile is it possible to flash some other variant custom rom on it with modified kernel or boot ?
I read here, somewhere, that you need stock recovery to do the update. Since I have flashed another recovery (and rooted and installed Xposed), I'm not sure if I can update to EMUI5.
Furthermore, I'm not even sure how to do the update. The update (b351) is available in FF and checks out as "compatible", but I don't know what the install procedure is. Especially without stock recovery.
Any help or info is much appreciated
yeah, you should flash stock recovery thru ADB and thn try updating...
Not adb but fastboot

That you may need to find your own. Well in custom ROMs, they are designed to work with custom recoveries like TWRP. While in stock, the whole system is inside update.app, which can't be read by a custom recovery.
