So the VR HYPE got to me and out of curiosity i ordered a cardboard for my note 4 (n910F) to see whats it all about, Folded the thing together and downloaded some apps like Titans of space and vanguard.
I was amazed by it and want more and a better experience than the fuzzy lenses in the cardboard and small FOV.
So now i'm about to order a GEAR VR but read some problems with root/custom roms.
I myself am running a stock rom (odex) and the only modification i made was CF-auto root for the obvious debloating of the device.
I want to know if this is going to be a problem for the gear since i don't want the emotion kernel on my device since when i tested it (r16) it made my device unstable like dropping wifi and 3g connections and some other minor things.
I really want to jump into the world of VR but note 4 kernels are hard to come by
Selinuxmodechanger.apk no longer works so you have 2 choices. Odin the stock firmware or run custom kernel.

thanks a lot for your reply, i guess there is only 1 way to find out for me then.
Ordered the Gear VR last night so it should arrive today
I read that Kitkat has better performance for G-VR than lollipop so if it does not work with my modded stock rom i think ill have to go back to 4.4.4 again after using 5.0.1 for a while.
Does anyone have experience with KK or LP performance?
update: got my g-vr in today, worked flawless on 5.0.1 rooted with cf-auto root. just wanted to let u know.

So.... my contract upgrade and Valentines Day fell right on top of each other and my wonderful woman made a new Note 3 and Gear ($150 deal at Best Buy) happen for me (ain't she the best?).
Could someone advise me to the advantages and or disadvantages of not rooting the Note while still rooting and modding the Gear? I am not new to the root/mod world having done so on previous phones (2 previous Evo 4Gs, 2 EvoLTEs, and a few others for friends and family). I basically only needed root for wifi tether and titanium backup but would rather not muck up my new devices with aftermarket roms unless there is distinct benefit in doing so. I do see the advantages of root/modding the gear but what do I lose by not root/modding the Note as well?
Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

Howzit man, congrats on the phone and Gear.
Well I am running stock note 3 and null_21 on the Gear.
I am leaving the note stock for now because dont really have the need or want to root at this stage....but
Rooting the gear definitely has major advantages over stock. Just makes the device so more useful and fun to use. I am enjoying it alot more after root. Read the root guides and watch some video of rooted gears and you will see how much better it becomes
Cheers
Thanks man. So I won't be missing out on any Gear functionality but not rooting the Note is what I'm assuming?

There's a lot of functionality that you're going to be missing out on both devices by not rooting. You don't necessarily need a custom ROM on the Note 3 either to get significantly more enjoyment out of it. Keep in mind that there are some rooting methods out there for the Note 3 that trip the KNOX warranty counter and others that don't, so if you root make sure to pay attention to that. Once you're rooted install Xposed framework and grab some modules like Wanam, Tinted Status Bar, Disable Clear Defaults Dialog, and App Settings. Those are the 4 I use and they are glorious. As for the Gear I'm currently working on rooting/installing a custom ROM on it because I want Google Now, which apparently requires Bluetooth Tethering to be enabled from what I can tell.
If you're not comfortable with doing this just yet give it a few months, you'll likely get the itch to tweak with more stuff and the Xposed/root thing should scratch that for a while. I got my Note 3 at launch and literally installed my first custom ROM yesterday, so it's possible to hold off
I know I'm missing out on both by not rooting. After all of the stuff I've read on tripping Knox I'm wary about rooting the Note. I did notice however that I do already BT tethering as an option on the stock Sprint Note rom. I don't know if it will be limited like the wifi tether would be though. After all of the bugs and glitches and battery life issues I had with my old EvoLTEs I was just resigned to keeping the Note stock and especially now that they have officially confirmed 4.4 coming it's way. I'm planning in holding off on the Note until a root method for 4.4 comes around.
As far as the Gear goes... I am itching to root this thing badly and see what this little doodad from hell can do. I just need to sit down and read all of the tutorials as I have always done so that I don't become forum fodder for asking questions that were already answered.
Long story long... am I going to give up and Gear functionality by not rooting the Note assuming bluetooth tethering functions on the stock note rom or is the Gear root functionality independent of whatever phone I have it attached to?

I heard that LP 5.1.1 is the most stable. We are stuck in 5.0.2 on Note 4. So is my Tab S. So is my Alpha phone. All at 5.0.2
Why is Samsung so slow? I think they might have abandoned us.
Samsung screw up on Note 5 and all the updates are slow.
Its a bad company.
It's not Samsung. They updated. The update is now with US carriers. They are holding it up. Sprint, I believe, already pushed the 5.1.1 update to their phones a couple weeks ago.

I heard from an a distant uncles girlfriend, second cousins best friends brother we should be getting it very soon.
There are a few 5.1.1 custom roms available. But if you are not rooted or you need T-Mobile features, you'll have to wait for T-Mobile to push the update.
Best decision I ever made was to install a custom rom. I currently have 5.1.1 and do not have to deal with the ever slowing TouchWiz. After StageFright was announce the very next day the developer of the rom i'm currently using patched it up, the only downside is I did have to sacrifice Wi-Fi calling but soon enough Android M will come out and that will fix it.
geez cant you wait, you see the C is getting the update, and then you make unnecessary threads about the update, just be patient..
if you cant wait, ill buy your note 4 for 200$ :victory:

Been using PopRocks v10x and it is amazing, fast and stable. ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...procks-rom-v1-tw-rom-bases-tmo-stock-t3096286 ). Now if you want to try 5.1.1 there are many choices to choose from and can recommend them all.
Just me, but I think Samsung is in no hurry to push it 5.1.1. I guess there mentality is if they (note 4)users want 5.1.1, buy a note 5, which for me it ain't happening.
My note 4 came with 5.1.1. There should be a few customs floating around, such as TekXodus.
Samsung and the note 5 is very disappointed. I will stay on Note 4
FUN FACT:
Tmobile already has 5.1.1 and it is installed on Note 4s with the SM-N910T3. You can buy it in the store right now or warranty your phone and get it. Both of those options will be faster than waiting for the carrier to release it.
Tmobile gets a thumb down for this move. Uncarry that update Uncarrier.
5.1.1 makes this phone fly i got the sprint version . Battery life gets alot better to and fixes all the bugs. Hope you guys get it soon or start porting it from the sprint version. We have a s6 edge + rom with note 5 extras running 5.1.1 and it makes the phone feel like a new phone working theme store and all

Hello All,
I bought a used ATT Note 3 that's coming today. I've been reading up on rooting, Lollipop, battery life, etc on this phone and have some questions before I make "fatal" changes. Right now I'm using the LG E980, it's stock rooted and very happy with it. Great battery life, nice camera and has served me well. I'm on 4.4.2 and have read up on the "good and bad" of Lollipop. So here's my questions:
#1---The phone (Note 3) is now running 4.4.2. If I "Geohat" root it, will I be able to OTA to Lollipop if i want later on? Will it trip Knox?
#2--- Do I really want Lollipop? I've been quite pleased with Kit Kat but the "geek" in me loves new things, but I've read horrible problems with Lollipop along with people that say it's okay. Also, I really can't find too much on revision 2 of Lollipop if it's good or not.
#3---Is the only way of rooting Lollipop that long, drawn out ODIN process? Once again, is it worth having Lollipop?
#4---If Lollipop is worth it, do people notice (especially) connection problems to car audio? Battery life? Connection issues? Other apps not working?
Basically----Is going to Lollipop the equivalent of going from Windows 7 to Windows 8?
Hi, I have been using gear vr with Galaxy s6 edge and never observed this phenomenon. However, it is very evident with galaxy s7 edge. Some of the dark environments and shadows appear too bright and pixelated. One example is the Cinema hall in Oculus Video where the back of the front seat is not showing any shadows and its like bright and pixelated dark spot. Same is the case if I look back in the corners and they appear bright and pixelated. Seems like rendering issue with shadows and dark environment. Any one else with this issue and any luck in finding a solution?
I have the same problem...
same problrm here too
Time for sammy/oculus to update/fix this. Let's go team! I suggest contacting samsung mobile US on twitter, they reapon to tweets-copy oculus while you're at it.

Are you rooted? That was the case with my S6 and the splotchy colors. I just reverted back to stock and it looks incredible. I rooted my phone before I ever even touched the GearVR so I've never seen how it's actually supposed to look. I just wish I could find a rooted kernel that doesn't have the color issue or at least a way to tether my knockoff PS3 controller via Bluetooth

AFAIK I was just on a stock rom with some rooted kernel, Unikernel, I believe, but I hear stories there are other kernels without the splotchy colors. I just have to find them.

Sure. The problem is I didn't realize the scarcity of Sprint ROMs and kernels for the S6 until after I bought it. Apparently other carriers are much more open so there's more custom stuff available. For the Sprint S6 there's only a handful of Lollipop options, but plenty for Marshmallow which I'm not upgrading to until the app devs get the MM game issues resolved. Half the games don't work under MM so I'm staying put. Off to continue my search...

im still on 5.1.1 vadar rom loving it sof far had no issues
So i tried to find a little bit of information but dont see vr any where. Last i remember rooted phones cant work with samsung gear, but what about the virtual reality? On a custom rom? I remember reading some update or kernal worked with vr. Well is any 1 running the latest moar rom and has the vr headset?
Hey @djhulk2
This has been resolved for quite a while (more than a year now). I've been running custom ROMs for years, and am currently running an international ROM on my Sprint variant & have no issues with my Gear S or Gear S2. Regarding Gear VR - you'll need to use a custom kernal if you are or plan on running MOAR. The ones that support Gear VR will usually state it in the title, from what I've seen. Check the forum when you can.

This guy is just lost, he just never gets it! What international ROM are you running and do you get everything fully working on the 920P?
I've been using the GearVR with my rooted + custom rom Note 5. Many people are doing it, as it's the only way you can get a PS3/PS4 (some work native?) controller working wirelessly over Bluetooth with SixAxis.

A few things:
If your main concern is being able to use the Gear VR, you can do that with the stock ROM, no issue. If you want to try your hand at flashing, I would highly suggest that you spend some time reading through the threads for your specific Note5 variant. As it is, I have the Sprint Note5, but since I have been flashing and developing for quite a few years now, I have become comfortable with finding and using ROMs that may not have been specifically built for my device (ie. me using international ROMs on my Sprint device). To answer your question @954wrecker, I was testing the CM13 build at the time I originally posted, but I've since gone back to using MOAR with the MM updates. There were too many issue with that build to keep it going as a daily driver, but I had phone/GPS/BT working, but roaming would cause me to completely lose cell data until I rebooted the device, and GPS was only accurate to about 300yrds (which isn't completely horrible, but still...). I've used other international ROMs, but at the end of the day, most are all the same unless you know how to modify their scripts...
In order for folks to help you out, I'd suggest figuring out what variant you are using. If you actually should be using the international ROMs, then once you find a ROM that suits you, you will then need to find a kernel that supports GearVR. Most Kernels do support it, but you will need to do the leg work and figure out which one will suit your specific daily needs. Since we do not know what variant you are using, nor do we have your phone in our hands, it makes helping you out a little difficult. If you have specific questions, feel free to PM me - head-up: I do not log on here every day, so it might take time for me to respond. But I'll keep an eye out :good::good:
I just got the Samsung gear vr and I'm rooted running Moar v4.0 works no problem
