Casting my phone or tablet photos in 2015 - Google Chromecast

I used to use Google Plus all the time, but less in the past year. It seems like about once a year Google pushes an update that dramatically changes the interface, and all of a sudden I no longer know how to use the app anymore.
They removed the Photos feature from G+ a month or so ago, and I really didn't think much about it... Until today when I went to cast some photos I shot at an event earlier in the day.
No photos tab in Google Plus? OK. Ill do it from the Photos app. Except the Photos app can't cast! Wtf?
Seriously? Did they really do that? Am I being forced to install a second photos app just so I can cast my photos?

"Pathetic" workaround https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chromecast/8G7YDl-Fo1s;context-place=forum/chromecast. Go to the forums and complain. Of course, no mention of Google+ which isn't such a new app. On the other hand, I was impressed that screen casting worked in my limited testing.

Good thread. Thanks.
I did make a post there. Weird not many people posting in the thread. Is it not that common to want to look at your photos on your big screen TV?

Do you mean the APK for the new or old market?
Just install it. There should not be any problems. I've been using it for about a month now. Its great!
Alright. I just installed it. I think it's an awesome market. I was just afraid to lose the other one in case something was wrong with this one.
With Google made apps (market, gmail, maybe more... ) you can uninstall updates if something goes wrong as opposed to having to uninstall and find the old apk
menu>> settings>> applications>> manage applications>>all

Thanks. I would hit the thanks button but it yells and says I can only thank 5 times a day.
I have the new APK.
Just sent it to Scott!!
Updated OP. Added a link to get the new apk.
New Android Market!
I saw a new market app on the new Samsung Galaxy Tablet 10.1" yesterday and when I got home my market app asked me to agree to market terms and boom, I had the same market on my phone! I'd assume that this is the market you all are talking about. I would guess everyone will be getting it, it was even pushed to my Droid 1 that's just on WiFi at the moment. Thought it was pretty cool.
Just got the update yesterday....great update.
Movie Rentals eh?
So it looks like Google is launching their new movie rental service with this market update. I don't think I'll use it because I have Netflix, but has anyone tried that feature yet?
I watched "The Switch" with my girlfriend through google movies. It went really well, was cheaper than a lot of places, and it was basically a Youtube video. It had the typical controls and quality selection of youtube, and the picture quality was good. It was quiet, but many video services are, and that may be because of my computer. Overall, 4/5. Could have had better sound, but the quality was really good. Now just wondering if you can download those movies like you can normal youtube clips. Oh, and it doesn't play on rooted devices.

Google just launched their Videos App in the market. You can also view you on device videos through it and the interface and organization is pretty nice. The videos you rent can now be watch through videos instead of YouTube. You can also browse rentals through the app.

Does Facebook app show everything in a narrow center column?

Ever since v1.9.3 or 1.9.4 (can't remember), the Facebook app shows everything in a narrow column down the center of the screen, and photos are cropped so you only see the left side. There are a few bad reviews on the Play store that mention this issue. I posted a thread in the general section about this, but someone replied he doesn't have the issue with another tablet. I wonder if it's an issue with touchwiz and facebook. I had the issue before and after the ICS update. I've tried clearing data, as we as uninstalling and reinstalling. Only thing I haven't tried is backing up to a side-loaded older version.
U can only see the full pictures without cropping in the portrait view just force close facebook app and open it again in the portrait position

I'll give that a shot. It used to work in landscape, where pictures would take the entire width. I'm trying to figure out if it's an issue with just the tab 8.9, any samsung tabs, or all android tablets. Comments in my other thread would make it seem that it's not a problem on all android tablets. It's like the code to size the pictures uses the full width, then some other code that formats the columns, just uses some max width, which ends up cropping photos. In addition to that, the Facebook app on the Gtab also doesn't show the new timeline with cover photo, where the same facebook app version on my phone does.

Notifications.
Also, you're reply doesn't help me narrow down if the problem is the app itself, or an issue with the app only on the 8.9.

The pictures are still cropped when I do this, just seemingly by not as much (since the slim center column is closer to the width of the screen in portrait.
Here's the email I sent to FB on Jul 13
Just updated to 1.9.7 on my Galaxy Tab 8.9. The center column and cropped picture issue is still here. Please fix this soon. It worked just fine several versions ago, I think somewhere around 1.9.0 or so.

I have tried every version from 1.8.3 up till the latest, and they all have the problem. So, that means one of these things are the cause:
1. The Tab 8.9 has issues with Facebook (not likely at all, since the problem showed up after an update to Facebook)
2. The FB app has issues with TouchWiz tablets (plausible perhaps, but also not likely. only have an 8.9, so can't verify)
3. The FB app had some server side change, since all the older versions that used to work just fine, show the same problem (most likely to me)
But, I don't have any other tablet to test with, and from my other thread, people didn't seem to indicate that they had the problem.
I really hope the rumored Android app rewrite fixes this sorry excuse for an app.
I guess for the time being, I'll leave it on for the notifications, and just use the web page till then. Not ideal. SMH
Any other good app for FB ?
I have the same problem on my Xoom and I believe it is the same on all Android tablets. Very annoying.
If it was same on ipad it would have been fixed the same day.
PS Android version on tablets doesn't make any difference HC, ICS, JB I tried them all Fb has the same issue on all of them.

Thanks for the input. Really hard to believe FB doesn't have the funds available to buy a single Android tablet to test their app on. What's more puzzling is that it probably is just a wrapper for the web page. I dont' understand why the same version on my ICS phone shows the timeline/coverphoto page for someone, but on my ICS tablet, it shows some watered down page and only in a center column.
And, in my experience, on tablet its impossible to switch from wall view to info view, so you can't lookup phone numbers , email, etc
Not only that but photos are cropped when shared in a group or on a wall. So annoying.
It does this on the 10.1 Tab as well. I was disappointed to discover it does this also on my new 8.9 LTE . SO ANnoyed....and disappointed really.
Looks like the 2.0 update for Facebook has finally fixed this issue.

[Q] Camera 'EXTREMELY' poor! + Crappy Mail + Other queries

1. Got the HTC One from AT&T yesterday. Though I don't take too many pics with my phone, but i still wanted a phone which could take atleast half decent pics. And with HTC One, I'm terribly disappointed with the pics. My old iPhone 4 had much much muchhh better picture quality than One!
I'm surprised how this camera is compared to Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5 when iPhone 4 takes better pics than this!
I donno if I'm missing some setting, as of now I'm using the cam with all default settings (Scene mode-Normal, etc).
2. Coming from an iPhone, another most important "loss in quality" feature is mail/gmail app! I'm shocked to see how ultra crappy gmail app is on android! I can't believe that Google was not able to build a half decent mail app for android.
I was trying the Mail app of HTC and when I configured my mail as Gmail, it din't send me the push notifications. When I tried to configure as Microsoft Exchange, it kept giving me some "Please try again later" error. Also, the mails were only displaying text and no images (despite selecting 'Maximum Size' in receive mail settings), kinda reminded me of my 10 year old Sony Ericsson phone which used to display mails without any images.
3. Why can't i take pics using volume keys?!
After almost 2 days of usage, these are some of the MAJOR quirks and I hope can be solved.
I actually looked at your two other posts on XDA and I don't *think* you're trolling. I think you just don't like how some of your first few pictures came out. And some other stuff. You know, coming from iOS to Android is going to take some adjustment generally- instead of rushing to XDA to post a thread about 'I'm overwhelmed with how much this sucks' maybe just take one thing at a time.
Anyway, as for the camera, a) be specific with what you don't like [ie maybe it's just you] and b) did you check software version [ie maybe it's just the software]. Everyone seems to think the camera got better with version 1.29 . If you've already got that, not sure what to tell you. If everything's functioning as intended and you still hate it, return it. Life is too short to hate your phone.

Re. #2:
You can download the gmail app from the play store if you don't like the built in htc mail app...
I find that the HTC mail app out classes the mail app for iOS by a long shot. I hated the mail app. On iOS. I never liked the Gmail app on either platform though.
Also you have to be joking about the iPhone 4 having better picture quality. I've done many test shots between the two and the iPhone 4 produces so much noise it's insane, sucks in low light, and even didn't get as much detail as say photos. Don't know how you are even getting remotely close results with the iPhone 4.

Google+ Photos as Gallery Replacement Sucks

how the hell can you "select all" photos from this app? as it stands, if i take 50 photos, i need to go through one by one and select them to send them somewhere or move them? this is absurd.
I agree. Try piktures from the play store. That's a good gallery app

This is probably the one thing that made me say WTF. I'm going with cyanogenmod gallery from the play store.
Use quickpic it's like the stock gallery from KitKat
This is the thing that bugs me about Android. They got rid of perfectly good standalone apps and want to tie everything in with their services.
I don't want Play Music -- I want to go right to my songs and playlist with one click.
I don't want Photos App -- for the same reasons above.
I don't want Email to be bundled in with Gmail.
It's getting to the point where soon I will have to replace all of the built in apps with apps that simply work better.
QuickPic is defatenaly the way to go.. nice find!

Yep. Gallery, Messaging, Music Player and Browser are areas where OEM's like LG and Samsung, etc.., def have a major advantage over Google's Android decision and design team.
I just tap and hold on the first picture, then tap all the other pics I want to move. Then hit the share button
Quickpic is what I use. Cm gallery isn't half bad though

quickpic is a great find for sure.
If you use the light theme with Quickpic, it pretty much looks like a built in Android app anyway. Even has the latest material design.
I actually like the G+ pictures app and was using it before I got my N6.
I have to say that I am also extremely disappointed with Google's photo gallery app. It sucks indeed. I am coming from the LG G3 and their gallery app was awesome. The layout was wonderfully displayed and user friendly. Not to mention all of the great features it offered, such as add albums, move photos and videos around and also to hide and then lock selected albums. If we could get that on the Nexus 6, that would truly be an epic win for us all.
Use Motorola Gallery (bundled with Motorola Camera), available in this forum or in the Moto G section.

[Q] Cross platform messaging with iOS devices?

Hello all. Had the N6 for a couple of weeks now and love this phone like I loved my last Nexus (the N1).
Only problem I've got is that my progeny like the simplicity of their iOS devices. I work away from home for long periods so I like to message them when possible. I picked up an ipad a couple of years ago for this purpose but really dislike the whole fiasco of keep track of two devices that have completely incompatible OSs.
The wife doesn't want me to set up a Google+ profile for the kids either so I'm looking for a solution that would allow me to message them from my N6 to their imessage accounts...
I found http://imessageonandroid.com/ but I'm leery of the need to side load what I would think should just be on the play store if it's so wonderful. I don't see any justification for side loading on their site either.
Anyone ever used it or know of another solution that I can seek out that doesn't involve the young one's creating more online accounts?
Thanks in advance.
If they have a gmail account you could use hangouts. You don't need to make a G+ to go with it and hangouts seems to be good for most people.
You won't find an iMessage solution. You will need to stick with something else that is cross platform. A few are Hangouts, Telegram, Whatsapp (You might need a telephone # for this one), and plenty of others.
Both my 3 and my 5 year olds, both with iPads, call me through hangouts almost nightly. They haven't grasped the whole messaging feature yet, but I work nights so its how I say goodnight to them sometimes. I'd say hangouts is your best, most full featured option.
My better half also enjoys iOS with her iPhone 6, she, however, hates hangouts and will only download it on her phone if I ask her to for a quick video chat.
