Only if you flash userdata.img your device will be wiped. Flashing system, boot, cache or recovery will not wipe personal data.

[Help]Stuck up with Recovery!!

Hi all,
Got a strange problem.. I'm using Nik project x v4.1 with .11 radio...today i got poor network signal, so I flashed radio again n it's working fine.
Then I planned to flash xcs kernel 2.2 and faceunlock for this Rom.
When I am recovery, I got message like. "You are in safe mode, please wipe cache. If u flashed hboot.img then format system"
I took nandroid and
1. fixed permission
2. Wiped cache
3. Format system
4. Flashed both zip files
When everything got over and upon clucking power menu->reboot got alert
"You are In safe mode. Unable to access system partitions. Please format system partition except sd. Reboot in recovery. Yes or no"
I clicked no and followed steps to install new Rom (wipe data factory, wipe cache n dalvik, format system, format partition except sd )restored my nandroid backup and again got same message that
"You are In safe mode. Unable to access system partitions. Please format system partition except sd. Reboot in recovery. Yes or no"
Please help me. Worrying that my mobile will be bricked. Please guide me to get rid off this..
Edit: I clicked reboot and my mobile booted normally. But under power menu, on clicking reboot, got into same problem. Please help me to avoid this. Worry something wrong in my mobile!!

When you formatted the /system partition, you wiped out Nik's ROM and then you only flashed a new kernel and a patch. That is why it you get the Unable to access system partitions.
You need to flash Nik's ROM again, then flash the kernel and then flash the patch.

Thanks tpbklake. Before formatting systems partition, I have taken nandroid backup. I restored nandroid but after that too, I got same alert.
Ok, I'll start from beginning. After flashing Nik Rom again, can I restore data.img from my nandroid.?

Do you have any idea on this? I got this before flashing anything.

You changed the radio. Either gb -> ics or ics -> gb and this causes some change in the partition layout that's why recovery is asking you to format. What I don't understand is why you didn't just format the cache partition like it told you to. It would have saved us all some time.

I haven't changed the radio of two different versions. Earlier I was in ICS radio .11M and again flashed the same ICS radio..11M) Yes, I did cache format as well as instructed.
While flashing radio which supports same OS version, am I need to wipe cache or its not required?

If that's what the recovery is telling you to do, I would be inclined to agree.

yellow triangle only comes from flashing files through ODIN, are you sure there isnt something else youve done?
Which ROM did you install ?
I was totally on stock and I dont remember cleary how I had rooted my phone. Its just that the data is there because when im making a nandroid back up i can see the files name i had while its making the back up. but It stops almost at the end

media (pics, videos etc) is stored on the Internal sd card (if there is no external sd card), a full wipe WILL NOT wipe your sd card, it will only remove all your apps and the app data (configurations, game saves etc)
as for contacts, these will be deleted, but google syncs regularly so they should be automatically restored when you log back in after wiping.

alright i am gonna try a full wipe first. I hope pictures and videos dont get deleted
they wont get deleted and wipe may not solve the issue as the system partition is corrupt with the incomplete flash and you will need to install a rom... either the stock or the one you were trying to install...
1. if you install the stock rom again > you may be able to preserve the contacts,
2. if you go with the custom rom > then format the system, data and cache partitions for a clean install. (this will not delete the media)

Yes, factory reset through stock recovery erases your internal storage.
After you root & flash custom recovery like TWRP, factory reset wont erase internal storage.

Wiping data after install Custom ROM?

Can i wipe data after install any ROM and before reboot to OS? Tks
You can always wipe data, preferably before flashing clean, but you may flash after also.
For some pre-installed programs, you may have to flash rom again after wipe.

A clean flash (wipe data, cache and Dalvik/ART - the default wipe in TWRP) is typically recommended before flashing a custom ROM. Yes, you can wipe after flashing, but I don't see a benefit if you already wiped before flashing the ROM.

Technically yes. But if you intend to do this, there are some considerations: If you made a TWRP backup of your current ROM (which you should always do before flashing a new ROM), than that backup will be lost when you wipe internal storage. Similar thing with Titanium Backup or any other similar backup tools.
You'll also lose whatever ROM zip you are flashing. And it's not that unusual that things do go quite right with a ROM flash, and you want to flash it again.
These points can certainly be worked around, for instance with adb sideload or adb push, or mounting storage in TWRP. But it's extra steps, that should be considered. At a minimum, you should know how to (be prepared to) put a "known good" TWRP backup or ROM file back onto the phone.
