I had more than one AHD. I had a black one, and a white one. Both ended up with a Maxx battery and I loved the phone using that. Little heavy, little bulky but the 2 day heavy battery was worth it. I currently have a moto x 2014 and the battery is.... Not bad? Okay? A little disappointing? I get 3 hours 30 mins or so max screen use and have to charge around 5-7pm most of the time. Some days I can make it to bed and beyond(punpunpunpun) but rarely. It's odd to consider a "downgrade" but this is why I ask. Say, using CM12.1 or so, how is the phone? What bugs are there with CM12.1 now, how's the battery, performance, etc?
The phone is crappy. Dont even think of coming back, it would we better to grab a long lasting phone (z3c, lg g2, moto droid turbo, etc)

I just went back to an Atrix HD from a first gen MotoX due to a broken screen. Somewhat ironically, the only reason I originally switched from the Atrix was a broken screen (now using the wife’s old Atrix).
I’m using CM12.1 and it is ok, maybe a little better than I expected. I do notice some lag compared to the MotoX, but it feels pretty useable. Battery life using a newer, aftermarket EB20 battery has been ok, but I don’t expect to be able to get a full day of heavy use based on the experience so far this week. Using the new adaptive brightness has a positive impact, pushing screen battery impact to second place (and I find it much less annoying in terms of rapid swings than the old auto brightness).
The lag is most noticeable when I first activate the screen and in Chrome. I might try out a few other roms to see if there is any big difference.
Overall, I’m happy enough to keep using the Atrix for now, but likely not long term. I’m interested in the Oneplus 2, but not sure how long I’ll want to wait.

I see, interesting mix here. I'm running 5.1 now, I pulled my root out to run it. Pretty brave but I'm confident root will come back. So far, my battery has improved a little. However, my youtube app is practically useless, so that probably has something to do with it. I'm a youtube whore a lot of the time. Usually 2 hours a day of youtube on my phone and 1 hour other uses then charge lol.

Ok so right now am looking for a phone to buy.
And had the droid x
And droid charge.
So my question is would anybody recommend the d3?
And how is the development for the d3 look in the future?
I heard about motorola unlocking the bootloader but when the day comes, will they only provide it with the new phones? Or would it be like an update?
Absolutely would recommend!
I wholeheartedly recommend the D3 - especially if you are looking for a physical keyboard.
Development is well under way and there are now at least 2 full working ROMs. I've tried both Steel Droid and Monster and both are great - i find monster to be faster and thats my preference.
When I first got the phone, I was pretty bummed that the locked bootloader had put a huge damper on development. Ever since root has been acheived, however, things have been much better and you could not pry my D3 from my cold dead hands.
I hear that Blur is much better than previous iterations, but I use launcher pro so I don't use blur at all.
heres a link to the ROM, Mods and Themes thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1289611
As much as I like my D3, I would not recommend it to anyone looking to get a new phone. unless you absolutely need a keyboard, I would wait for either the Droid Razr or Galaxy Nexus. Both will have better hardware and FAR better screens and will be LTE.
I got a D3 yesterday, after having the D1 the last two years. After about 20 hours using it, I love it. I really dig how fast it is, and the larger screen is nice too.
As soon as I got it home, I rooted it and ran the scripts to remove the VZW apps. I really don't see a need to flash a ROM since this D3 runs so smoothly already. I'd like to edit some PNG files here and there, and that will probably be about it for me. I remember the constant flashing of ROM's, SBF files, and themes on my D1. This time around, I'm really not looking forward to that. It feels to me like VZW and Motorola did a great job with the device as is once you skim off the bloatware.
Like SrulDog, I switched to LP immediately. I've been using LP since about the time it was released, so I am very comfortable with it. It runs great on the D3 too.
I say go for it. I don't know how it compares to the Droids you have owned, but I know it is much better than the D1.

Sure the screen looks crap sometimes. But I'm standing in direct sunlight in 100 degree weather right now and I can see every detail on it. Try that on an AMOLED.

I have had this phone for a couple weeks and I am enjoying it. I had an OG Droid that the screen crapped out on me so this was nice because it works! I am used to the hardware keyboard on a Blackberry Tour/Bold 9650 but that's personal preference. I am getting used to this one though and I can fly on it so I guess it's pretty good for a keyboard.
A couple things I have done are root, freeze a few apps like VCast and run Autokiller at Strict, and the phone is as smooth as butter now. It has the same hardware as the Bionic really so I mean it's as high end as you can get. If you want 4G then as mentioned you should wait, but I have been getting great 3G speeds and yes I have to wait for the Market apps to download a little but it's a lot faster than it has been in the past with my OG Droid.
Well 4g isent really a biggy for me.
More like.batterry life and great rom features really

Great responses here! This is why I love XDA! To answer the question…yes, I would definitely recommend getting a DVD for all the reasons given above. Dev work is going well, CM7 is on the way, and we MAY have an AOSP rom by the weekend (permissions to port pending). The physical keyboard is outstanding, and the screen is good. Even though colors are a bit washed out, being able to view the screen in direct sunlight, with no issues, is a massive bonus. If you don't need the keyboard, and can wait a little while, I would jump all over the Nexus Prime/ galaxy Nexus/ whatever they're calling that 4.65" piece of sexiness! Either way, you'll end up satisfied imo.

The biggest bugger for me is the lack of RAM. Phone would have been a whole lot better if it had 1GB ram instead 512MB only. The screen is a letdown IMO, but indeed is great in the sun and also better on the battery.

Aside from the occasional issues from being in Australia, I must say I recommend the Droid 3. It's excellent!
I still fail to see what the lack of ram is holding us back from. But I've already convinced pne person to buy this phone, and they text me damn near everyday to thank me.

Two years ago the Milestone was an awesome terminal for its time.
Nice design, perfect size, one of the best display ever seen, incredibly good audio quality and decent CPU power.
The only drawbacks were the horrible battery life, the cheap keyboard and the crap camera.
The D3, although can't be considered a bad phone, is the shadow of what the MS1 was.
The performances (I mean the real ones, not the benchmarks) aren't on par with one years old phones, the crap camera and the poor battery life are still there, the keyboard is improved but is still built like a toy, while the phone grown more than the display, the display went from the best available to the worst ever seen, the signal sensitivity went from the top to the "below the average". The audio quality, while better than the HTC phones is not on par with the motorola ancestors.
As I already said, my Desire Z (aka G2) was a better phone in any area, excluding the audio level and the lack of the numeric ROW.
From my point of view was a boring phone, everything worked from the beginning, good battery life, great photos, super stable system, good keyboard, and fantastic tethering capabilities.
The display was also good, not as the one on the Milestone 1, but light years better than the Droid 3's one.
All in all I suggest to buy the D3 only if you can get a very good deal.
If you like a ready to go smartphone, a DZ/G2 is still a way better choice, especially considering its today average price.

i think people come from older phones and get hung up on the numbers when with a better processor and other amenities a 'low' RAM really isn't a factor and can actually make the phone faster with everything cached and saved to the system memory. I don't even check the RAM since i've never had an issue with slow or choppy speed.
Also i go a whole day with my phone and end with 30% battery at the end of the day. i use it heavy while im out, not as much when home from work but even then i come home with 50-40% battery. I'm not sure what you guys are doing to get poor battery life.

Usually just using it on modern networks.
The motorola basebands are usually poor (especially on the erly releases), and the power drain has a lot of variation depending on the generation and the make of the BTS/node-b, whatever.
Just for example when I got the milestone 1, with the initial firmware tha battery lasted less than six hour with a vodafone SIM, and almost a day with a three SIM.

Idk I hear people on Verizon say the same thing and we get pretty good service just about everywhere. sure at my old job where I was tucked in the basement my phone would die quickly but I couldnt blame that on the phone or the software, like you said it's the radio trying to get signal. I think it more depends on the user and how they use the phone/what services they run.
I had installed Juice Defender originally because i thought it would increase battery life, but i turn my screen on and off so much that it actually drained more battery from turning data off and on all the time, so now i only use it to automatically enable wifi when i'm home and turn off data while i'm asleep. maybe something like that could help you out?
All in all I think the D3 is one of the best Android options out. Plus i'm petty and like the fact that not everyone around here has one since it didn't seem to get a bunch of publicity...people still ask me 'What phone is that???"

When I bought the MS1 "wi sync plus" was the program that saved the ms1 form a jump out of the window.
Btw i never tried any wi sync+ clone, like juice defender.
I'm about to purchased D3 today. Too bad it's hard to find one here. Already ask the seller to check with the supplier if there is any. I only found Motorola Atrix at one single shop here.
This is definitely my choice right now. In my opinion, 512MB RAM is enough for a dual core 1 GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 SoC processor. PowerVR SGX540 is just nice, too bad that it only support OpenGL 2.0 and not DirectX as in Playstation Vita with PowerVR SGX543.
QWERTY keyboard has improved a lot this time. It had HDMI Type-D, Physical Button for Camera & Sound Volume & Micro-USB. I really hope it will get ICS update when it release and capable of USB Host. Another thing is that Motorola had been bought by Google, I believe Motorola will have latest update every time new Android version released. I hope so
One thing that make me stay away from Samsung Galaxy S2 is that it had one single port Micro USB for everything(HDMI through MHL, USB data, USB Charging, USB Host)
If i use HDMI output, then I cannot use USB Host at the same time. I wonder if the USB Host adapter connected to USB Hub, can it handle and recognize multiple device such as keyboard, mouse, game controller,USB Pendrive etc?
Yeah, but the way I understand it, even the phones that have 1gb of RAM right now (Atrix, Bionic) dont really have 1gb because 512mb is locked to be used with Webtop. And so far as I have been able to find, no other phone has more than 512mb right now. Can anyone confirm?
This mattered to me because I have an Atrix right now on AT&T and I absolutely love the phone, but can't take the ****ty service everywhere anymore, have to switch to Verizon. I had basically three phones I was looking at in the Amazon penny sale, D3, Bionic and the new Samsung qwerty, Supernova or something. So, if the above is right, the D3 I'm getting is essentially the same phone as my Atrix now without Webtop (don't care) or 4g (not here for years, boucou wifi) but with a physical kb, which actually makes it way better. I actually really, really like Gingerblur, and if it's slow I dig Launcherpro, so I should be good, yeah?

This. Coming from an Atrix getting HDMI mirroring will be a big deal to me; I didn't buy any docks and haven't rooted or reflashed other than official 2.3 update, so the only thing I ever get over HDMI is the media player interface. Which is cool, but I want something else.

How would the Atrix HD be as a backup phone? It doesn't have to be the latest and greatest and the price looks about right. How's the battery life and performance? I know it won't be as good as my Nexus 4 but does it still hold up well?
Also. How hard is the maxx battery Mod?
Any input would be appreciated.

Heard anyone of having a MERC and then getting a BMW as a backup car ?
Guys out there have left nexus for atrix as both of them fare well in normal usage (add to it atrix can be converted to maxx) and thanks to awesome devs ROMS are being cooked here faster than a busiest restaurants in Delhi.
as for the eb40/maxx mod, if you can read the instructions, understand it and have a pretty much stable hand then you can perform it.
Happy modding. :highfive:

@Aingaran summed it up well.
The Atrix HD development is really starting to take off. We have many roms now, with many more on the way. Our development might not be as far along as the Nexus 4, SGS3, or similar phones, but our bootloader has only been unlocked for 3 months now. Our Dev Team has been doing a great job and its really starting to show. It wouldn't surprise me one bit to see us surpass the Nexus 4 within the year -- Our devs are some very talented dudes.
Battery Life -- Battery life isn't that bad anymore, especially now that we're starting to have roms (kernels actually) that support undervolting. I get 24+ hours a charge, but I'm not addicted to my phone either.
Performance -- The only thing I've had issues with in regards to performance is playing some PSX games with an emulator. You won't have a problem running apps/games/crap from the market or HD movies.
The Maxx Mod -- "Easy" -- Difficulty really depends on your confidence in your abilities, but open phone, a bit of plastic shaving, place in the new battery, close it up.
//I wish our camera was placed the same as the Maxx so we could use the Maxx back cover and maybe add in a wireless charge mod.
Thanks for the all the replies everyone. What's the 1gb of RAM like? I'm a little skeptical as I've been used to 2gb for the last 7 months. Is the GPS good? I plan on using this stock mostly. The thought of being able to use the GPS all day and still have plenty of juice for a night out intrigues me. Not being screwed if I forget to charge my phone overnight would also be nice. 10+ hours of on screen time would be stellar. The best I've gotten with my Nexus 4 is a little over 4 hours.

I doubt you'll notice the 1gb/2gb of ram difference. Some like to complain that there's only 80mb free or whatever...failing to realize that the ram is freed up as needed and that the used ram is being used so they can quickly get back to whatever it is they were doing an hour ago. Because of that, less ram might even save some juice since the system doesn't have to keep track of twice as many background apps.
For me, gps is just fine. Usually accurate within 10ft (1m) and locks almost instantly.
If you plan on using it as just stock, run the HoloBlur rom. Stock based with a custom kernel so you get the best of both worlds. Highly recommended over stock.
On stock, I was getting 4-8 hours of screen on time...4 with games, 8 with music/web browsing. I'm starting to get the same with the 4.2.2 custom roms. In another month I expect we'll have better battery with custom roms than we do with stock. This is all with the regular battery, double or triple those times for the Maxx battery.
We have really good standby battery drain. I'm to the point of maybe 1-3% an hour on standby. Maybe 6-8% overnight drain. I'll add that I don't turn gps off, have wifi set to start/stop with the screen (unless plugged into a charging source), and I run Greenify on the few apps I have that like to run heavily in the background (Chrome, just so you know, I'm talking about you).
If you do get an AHD, I'll let ya know that lots of us here are fanboys with Apple-level derpy-love for our phone --> and that was BEFORE the unlocked bootloader. The way we see it, we'd rather have a well build locked down phone than a crappy, plastic unlocked phone. A lot of us are also American and had a limited choice on what we could get when upgrading; And all the phones offered to us were the locked versions, its a no-brainer to pick the best built one when all are locked --> I'd be on a Sony Xperia T if AT&T would have offered me the unlocked version. Motorola phones have a bigger hacker community behind them so when both are locked, Motorola > Sony (glad I picked right).
I'm currently looking into the Droid Turbo as I need options on a new phone. My Note 4 has been replaced twice, on my third phone with horrible screen issues. Had the iP6+, really bad screens and iOS sucks. Came from a year with the Moto X and it served me well, but bad battery life and bad burn-in forced me to get a new phone.
Needless to say, I'm limited on phone choices currently. I originally looked at the Turbo when it came out but the lack of brightness and no voice/data turned me off. But since it got the AC 1.0 update, that's a step in the right direction. I've also been told that the brightness issue has been resolved as well, but no one can seem to confirm it.
So, those of you that have had the Turbo, would you buy it again? How's the real battery life? Voice/data working great? How about screen issues, as far as discoloration or uniformity?
Thanks!
32 hours on, 4 hours of screen on time.. Still have 26% remaining. No regrets.
Anyone else?
I am really loving this phone. I had a couple small complaints, but they were patched with the last update. Battery life is awesome. Simultaneous voice and data working now. The screen is gorgeous. I would definitely buy again .If you need any more convincing watch this. His reviews are always spot on.
Battery life is phenomonal
I can't use voice and data and I took the update, tried it just last night.
Coming from a Galaxy S3... both me and my wife. Both of us are very happy. Screen is plenty bright. Not seeing any obvious screen uniformity issues... I haven't been "looking" for them, but I tend to notice things like that quickly, so it's good enough, at least. Battery life is far better than the S3, as expected... I guess I'm not a heavy user in that sense. Certainly would recommend this device (or the MotoX).

Have you enabled HD Calling? It won't work until you have done that.
Non HD call quality with Advanced Calling enabled is a little quirky. The last update addressed all the issues mentioned in early reviews AFAICT. I get 33 hours battery life on average and 4 1/2 hours screen on.
Definitely would buy again.

My wife and I also came from the S3 and we love this phone, no regrets at all.
I am very happy with mine. I see no issues related to screen brightness. VOLTE and data work just fine. I did have a speaker issue with my first device, which was among the first batch produced. I had it replaced with one from a newer batch and have had no issues thus far. If you are particular about your devices, I think there are few options that are "perfect" in their quality control. The devices are too complicated, with too may features, to expect that they will all leave the factory perfect.
With the announcement of both the Nexus 5x and the 6p is anyone jumping ship from the Droid Turbo in order for a much easier root/flashing process? The 5x is close in specs but a little underperformed and the 6p is just big.

I agree with the battery. Even the Moto Droid Turbo 2 is rumored to have a smaller battery at 3760mAh
sad...
So the first tests via phonearena for the Nexus 5x is out and clocks in at 6hrs 25min. The "same" test performed by them on the Droid Turbo in 2014 was over 10 hours. Amazing the difference. Even with "doze" to help the Nexus, Droid turbos will eventually get the update.

Making the jump to a 5X. Tired of waiting 9-12 months for Motorola to update plus ability to now leave Verizon at will. Was an original Maxx user prior to Turbo so definitely nervous about battery, but sounds like 10 minutes to 25% charge may make it easy to top of mid day. ..

So 48 hours in, I'm happy with it so far.
Battery: Yesterday under typical usage for me (unplugged ~ 7:30, 1/2 hour morning podcast over bluetooth, couple of calls, 1/2 hour screen on time) at 2:00 I still had about 77% of battery and projected usage time of another 15 hours. That is pretty much identical to where my Turbo usually set at midafternoon. Now obviously it's due to Doze keeping the consumption down when I wasn't using it and if/when 6.0 comes to the Droid it will become a 2-3 day beast of a phone. I've been following others on the Nexus 5X forums and they are getting 4-5 hours screen on time, so if you are a heavy phone on user the Turbo will win hands down. Today for example, where I've had more screen on time (less background email) I'm 11 hours in w/ 1-1/2 hours SOT and sitting at 31% w/ 5 hrs left. My Turbo on a similar weekend day would probably be sitting around 50-70%. Similar to the Turbo, for a quick top off charge 10 minutes is supposed to get you 25% battery so it would be easy for a quick top off on heavier days (did recharge 90% battery in less than an hour the first day)
Speed: I just ran a side by side comparison of the two phones with about the same apps installed and both from a fresh boot. The Turbo is only slightly faster for non-google apps, and the 5X is faster for google apps (guessing optimization for 6.0 is making that difference) but for the most part the speed difference is just barely noticeable (lot's of gnashing of teeth in the 5X forums about the processor and memory of the 5X) but saw the side by side online demo of the 5X and 6P and it's about the same types of differences in speed between the Turbo and 5X (I don't use my phone for games so can't make that check that they did in the video which showed a pretty dramatic difference). The slightly slower speed, is really not noticeable when I'm using the 5X which feels like no lag for me.
Call Quality: So far call quality on the 5X has been great, and on a couple of bluetooth car speaker calls no echo where as I do get occasional complaints of echo on my Turbo (I use Google Voice). I've never had any success with the Turbo Advanced Calling so usually use it straight up. One extra bonus for the 5X, since I can't get Advanced Calling to be stable on the Turbo, is that finally it has the extra antennas so I can do voice / data at the same time.
Size: The 5X is same height, a little narrower, definitely thinner and lighter than the Turbo. I purchased the Adopted case for the Nexus so have no complaints about the plastic of the 5X naked that have been circulating around.
Misc: Fingerprint unlock is awesome. Also, the 5X has Google Now voice recognition when the phone is off so I'm not losing anything there by ditching Moto Voice. Also with the Sensor Hub you get the adaptive display when you pick it up. Not quite as convenient as Moto's proximity activated display but I made the switch over to adaptive on the Droid a few weeks ahead of the 5X so don't really miss it that much. And when you do pick it up, if you want in just a quick tap on the fingerprint sensor and you are good to go vs. the swipe on the Turbo. And the most obvious advantage of the 5X is quick OS updates vs. the Moto delay....
So, 48 hours in I'm pretty sure I'm staying with the 5X. Going to give it another week before I relock my Turbo and give it to my son.

Build quality is pretty good and it is nice size. I don't game and for the things I do it is more than fast enough. I actually wanted a sub 5" phone but there really is any decent Android devices for less than $300. At $60 I am not overly concern with updates either since it is cheap enough to replace. There a phones that cost many times more that will get the same amount of updates. Better battery life than my Nexus 5 (which is not hard), decent camera, fairly stock android. Downside, other than the able to root, probably won't get any real updates or get custom roms.
Amazing for $60, for me this is just a backup phone, but this phone really handles the most common smartphone tasks even some light 2D gaming, extremely well.
This is my new primary device. I've never had flagship devices (besides the S3 I bought a year ago) so I may just have low standards for what to actually expect from a phone, but I love this R1 HD. You can't beat this thing for $60, let alone the non-subsidized $110 price, especially considering the community that's growing around this phone. Look at what we've accomplished in the first month. This could become the next S3.
It's my daily and I'm loving it!!
New Daily Driver
Probably the best phone I've owned to date. I've had LG G2, iPhone 5s, and Galaxy s5 (rooted & ROM'd). The R1HD replacing my s5. I bought the 16gb Prime R1HD not expecting a whole hell of a lot, but once I rooted and de-bloated it, damn what a phone. Stripped down to damn near stock android, some features of touchwiz I do miss, and the NFC but Other than the camera quality (that is actually better than the s5 other than action shots and I have an actual camera for that.) I have nothing to complain about. $60 and you get so much more phone for that. Worth every penny. After 14 hours of heavy use(booting to recovery and all that many times) still had 10% before I hit the bed @ 3am and today after moderate use for 15 hours still have 60% battery left. Truth be told I haven't done much 3d gaming on it but for everything else this thing is the tits. Great build quality, great screen, multitasking a breeze. I Can't wait for whats in store for this phone. I felt I needed to contribute to this community for how much it has helped me over the years. I just want to say thanks. Cheers.
Build quality is fantastic and performance leaves little to be desired. I regularly get 24+ hours of moderate to heavy usage before requiring a charge.
But, it doesn't have ambient display and the camera is so bad that it's not even worth taking pictures of things with it. Even my old Moto G 1st gen took better pictures.
But the main problem is, it's kind of really ugly. It's a flat brick of a rectangle with no attempt at design. So I can't love it.

Did you take the plastic off of the lens? Mine takes far better photos than my Moto G first gen ever could.

Ambient display is a feature in lollipop and later for AMOLED displays that shows notifications on the screen. It's generally not used with LCD screens as they require the entire display to be lit as opposed to only get pixels being used in AMOLED displays. Very similar to Moto display.

Good cheap phone, but can't be used as daily driver.
