Here's a weird one.
I plugged my NC in to charge this morning. It was just fine and then all of a sudden, the green light turned off and now the NC is no longer charging even though the battery is only at 59% .
What gives? Anyone else notice this?

Have not experienced anything like that. If I did though, I would reboot and see if that changes anything.

Try a reboot. I have noticed the last couple of days that my NC charges, but the status on the battery is not updated until a reboot. I have not figured out why this is happening yet. . .
I will try. The thing is, when i connect to the laptop via usb, it no longer recognizes my device as a drive. My macbook says it's drawing too much power and disbles the port. I'm wondering if they're related? I guess the NC charger requires more juice .......

I have two Win7 laptops and one of them no longer recognizes my NC as a drive either. The other one sees it as the Nook Color and as two drives. It's strange. I have not tried to find out why yet as there are only so many issues I can worry about at one time.
You know. . . I have noticed my problem just in thelast three days, and I have not tried it on a USB port in that time. Let us know if a full restart fixes your problem. It does sound a little different from mine.
I had the same problem till I started doing the following:
Make sure Nook is completely powered off.
Plug in USB cable, Nook boots up on it's on.
Turn off WIFI.
Unplug USB from Nook and then plug USB cable back in.
Now: Nook charges correctly in CHARGE mode:
It seems it takes unplugging 2X to get it into charge mode. You will see the light turn amber on the cable and the status of the Nook will be charging. The battery icon will show as well.
Well, that's annoying. Will i have to do that every time?

So rebooted the NC last night and plugged it in to charge. The light was orange and device showed it was charging when i went to bed. I just got up and the light is no longer on and battery only charged to 90% overnight. What gives? Is there somthing faulty?

Yet another update --- I finally got the NC to start charging again. Now the light on the cable turned green and the battery is only at 97%. Isn't it supposed to stay orange until the battery is fully charged?
Never had any problem charging mine at all... I plug it in typically towards the end of the second day, or when it gets much below 40%.. I always (intentionally) charge it using the Nook Charger and Nook Cable, any other combo will only charge it slowly, probably around 10%/hr at most IF the NC is standby/screen off.
As for how far it charges until it says it's done... Some Android phones stop showing "charging" at 90% but continue to slowly charge to 100%, some it's higher... And when it hits full it TURNS OFF THE CHARGER until it drops below the threshold again. This is how charging LiIon is done. I personally haven't paid any attention to how the NC charges, as it "just works" for me.
I'm wondering if it's something wrong either with my cable or my actual NC. Ugh. I don't want to return for another unit.
Bump. Anyone else seeing these charging issues? Should I take this back?

Not sure how relevant it is, but "slow charging" will not charge device very quickly, buti does supplement battery life quite nicely. since open wifi is my only internet source atm, I use an fm tranmitter with a usb port to listen to pandora in my car without draining battery at all. actually slowly charges if screen is off.
I'm just trying to figure out if there is something wrong with my NC or it's charger.

Dunno, but I finally broke down and bought a NC yesterday morning.
Had a b!tch of a time inserting the mini-USB cable, which presumably should not be the case. Managed to get it charged. Mine came OOB w/a 98% charge!
Then stupidly I removed the cable, but wanted to sideload a book shortly afterwards via Calibre and again had a b!tch of a time getting the mini-USB cable inserted. (Only mini-USB device that I have, so no other cable to compare with.)
Can't even get it to insert this morning, so I'm giving up for now and back this one goes.
Not real impressed so far with the build quality of a $250 device. Arguably OOB both the Pandigital Novel and Augen Gentouch were better. To make matters worse it doesn't even come close to the gTab's build quality either, which I was expecting it to be closer to.
Funny note in the manual that I noticed while browsing through it(checking to see if they maybe had a sneaky trick/lock to insert/remove mini-USB), and found a line:
"do NOT turn off NC while charging"?!
I usually turn off my devices while charging as they'll charge a bit more quickly, typically...

I would suggest that rather than relying on the battery percentages, start looking at the actual mV readings of the Spare Parts/Battery Information. I say this because I've seen android have fits trying to give accurate battery percentage readings. I'll put mine on the wall charger now and post the max mV level I can reach. Perhaps others can as well?
Ok I just put my NC on charge and the battery was reading 13% and showing a 3601mV reading.
My replacement NC, whose USB/charge cable inserts MUCH more easily that #1's did, came OOB @ 98% too, but #2 took FOREVER to charge to green... touch screen on this one is supersensitive as well... now to check for dead pixels, hot pixels, and chipped screen...
Getting tired of going to B&N, and their CS wasn't exactly wonderful as they were going to try telling me that #1's cable/USB port were fine and dandy until I made him check that the LED wasn't coming on & that the demo unit inserted more readily and further into the socket, just like #2 did which I checked right at the register but didn't linger to check for dead pixels, etc. as I was holding up the checkout line(@ 9a?!).
I went to look at one a few weeks ago too at that same store, and the woman at the Nook kiosk wasn't very interested selling. (She'd rather continue reading her NC than trying to sell one.)
#2 also came upside down in the box, i.e. the tab on the protective plastic to pull out the NC was at the end that doesn't open...
B&N needs some serious QA/CS/sales training... esp. with their crap return policy... well 13d to shake down and see if anything else falls off...

I Just noticed That when I plug it into my computer the nook charger has an orange/Yellow LED color, but when I plug it into another computer it has a green color - without any relation to how much battery he has.
At first I thought that orange means charging and green means full But apparently that's not true.

Figured out the problem, the other computer slow usb ports were just not fast enough to chrage it, so the nook charger lighted green
Today, for the first time, I noticed my Nook Color USB power cable had an illuminated red colored "n". And that was while the cable was unplugged from the Nook Color itself. (But, obviously, while plugged into the wall charger.)
I thought to unplug the charger from the AC wall power. It takes several seconds for the LED to stop glowing. I waited about 15 seconds after the light was not visible before I plugged the charger back into the AC socket. The cable glowed red again.
Upon plugging the cable into the Nook Color, the cable shows orange again. (As I'd expect, since it's been a couple of days since I last charged my Nook.) The battery icon on the top status bar is "filling", so I think it's actually charging.
I'm used to seeing a green "n" when the battery is full. And orange/amber/yellow when charging. Until today I have not seen a red "n" at all.

I -do- find the battery is fully charging. I just have this funny feeling that I ought not leave this thing alone in the house, or take a nap, or whatever, charging. Somehow I think I'll end up on the nightly news... another "victim" of Lithium-Ion gone horribly wrong. ;-) I'll probably try, like some others I've now found via Google, to get B&N to replace the cord or charger.
Wonder if this has something to do with the poor quality of the charger? There is a thread about the chargers breaking easily and the plug bending and eventually breaking.

I love both my Nooks (they serve different purposes) but the chargers/cables are very problematic. I had a perfectly working one with my first purchase but an accident destroyed the usb connector and B&N sent me a replacement. It worked for a couple of days and then died a slow death. I ordered a second Nook and got its cable confused with the third cable sent to replace the second defective one. Both worked fine, though, for a couple of days and then suddenly the N on one turned red while plugged in to the Nook or even connected to the computer. Tried it on two other Nooks and the same thing happened. So, I'll be calling in for my fourth replacement cable. I am very glad that I paid for the warranty; it has more than paid for itself with the replacement chargers/cables that B&N has sent to me.
On a side note, when I was waiting for the replacement cable and had no other Nook charging cable available, I used my Blackberry microusb charger to trickle charge the Nook. It literally took all night but at least it was up and running the next morning. It doesn't charge fast enough to use while running apps, as the battery discharges faster than the BB charger can charge the battery.
Again, I love my Nook, even with the charger/cable issues!
I'm running Froyo off the SD. Every since I've done that, I noticed that power cord never turns green when charging is finished at 100%. Has anyone else run into this problem as well?
Ok so this nook was bought brand new in December 2010 For my mother In-law. She hasn't used it much. So I asked if I could put Android on it? She said sure cause she hasn't used it at all. As a matter of fact the NC was totally dead when she gave it to me. So I get back to my house and put it on the stock charger. I let it charge for 2 hours. I picked it up and turn it on and all I see is this message: Battery too low to power ON. I did a search and turned up similar problems but the nc where all rooted. I'm wondering if other people have had this same problem? And what they did to solve this as it is more then likely an easy fix. A. Take it back to the store and exchange it. Or. B. Send it off for repairs. C. Someone On XDA has the answer.
Also I've done some trouble shooting like trying to reset it. Also I've used 3 Other chargers and its still not charging or turning on.
Edit: It turns on it just stays at the screen with a red battery displaying the message in the title. Also after charging for a while the screen kind of lites up like its going to turn on but only goes black after that and then comes back to the same red battery screen.

what are you charging from? are you using the stock nook cable and plug?
Yes. And charging it from the wall outlet. Did that with the stock charger. my charger from my HD2 and also tried with the charger from my vibrant. All have the same affect. It has the red battery and the messege below and it also has been a total of 6 hours of charging 2 hours each with the all the chargers.
That stinks. You may have to contact B&N for it. If your using the stock and other chargers then it must be a battery failure.

Yeah seems to me thats what it must be I'll post back what I find out.
When that message is displayed, try holding the power button for 30+ seconds and then turning it back on.
That has worked for me the couple of times it seemed stuck on that screen.

If you're using other chargers, it's possible that you've damages the usb port. The NC uses a non standard usb port, which has two stages. The first stage is standard 5 pin uusb communication, the second stage is non-standard 12 pin charging...

Their charger cables break...(bend and break) very easy. I have gone through 2.
The upside is that their charger provides power far faster than the normal microusb cords.
At this point...I'm charging mine almost exclusively from my stock evo cord.
If you don't turn off the screen when charging...it may not have enough power coming in to actually build a charge without their cable.

I never used another charger besides the stock charger that came with the NC. Up until this happened all that was ever used was the stock cable for charging. I only used another charging cable once I ran into these problems cause I figured the cable was damaged. Its happened to me before with other devices. But the same results happen with every cord I use. When I plug it in it lights up and shows the red battery screen. So that tells me that the cord or USB port couldn't be the problem. Cause its clearly getting power its just not charging.

When charging I can not turn the screen off it's stuck on the screen with a red battery.

No. They sell it without one...the 8GB internal storage is enough for looooottts of books. The microsd was just a nice + for people with lots and lots of music.
I had this issue as well, but I found a fix!
No matter what I did or how long I let it charge, it would always have that red low battery icon.
What I ended up doing to fix it was opening up the back of the unit and disconnecting the battery cable from the unit. I then plugged it directly into the wall without the battery connected to see if it would boot, though I don't know if that was necessary, I don't even remember if it booted that way or not.. I think it did not.
Anyway I unplugged the power cable again, reconnected the battery, then plugged in the power cable and tried to boot and it booted up perfectly after that. The battery icon indicated 13% charge, but it quickly charged back up just fine.
FYI I left the unit in the car overnight right before this happened, and it was pretty chilly that night, 10-20 degreed Fahrenheit. I suspect that caused the issue for some reason, so I've been sure not to do so since.
P.S. I had to do a fair amount of googling around before I found good instructions on taking apart the NC. I think I had to take off the 2 screws under the SD card slot and use a butter knife to just pry the back off. It's just held in with clips and you can't tell it was opened except for the little stickers over the screw holes.

Thanks for the feed back. I'm wondering by un-pluging the battery from the nook if it resets it. Kind of like if a phone freezes or if your computer freezes and you pull the battery. Seems like a plan. Not sure if this is what I'll do as I'm sure its still under warranty. If it comes back and its not covered or B & N wont replace it I guess thats my only hope.

I had this problem too, but I'm not sure "faulty" is the right word for the cable.
My friend borrowed my nook and returned it with a dead battery (Thanks asshole). So I plugged it into my computer at work and just got the always-on low battery message. After 45 minutes I took it to my car so I wouldn't forget it. I plugged it into my USB charger in the car using a different cable. Two hours later, same state.
When I got home I pugged it into the Nook wall charger with yet another cable (not the nook's original) and got the same thing. I searched here to see if I could figure out what was going on and decided to try the original cable with the wall plug. literally two seconds after plugging it in it started booting into Froyo.
I'm sure I didn't have four "faulty" cables. I think those that are saying you should be using the original are correct. The others worked fine when the battery wasn't empty, but mine only responded to the original once it got to the point of the unending low-battery message.

Same here. With battery completely empty and non standard cable,stuck at red battery sign forever. With orginal cable, boots fine and charges.
solution I found
Have CM7 installed on SDCard, got the battery icon, even with the unit plugged into the charger with oem equipment. Held the power button 'til the unit turned off completely, removed the sdcard, rebooted. Nook booted into stock fine, turned off, re-inserted sdcard and rebooted. All is well.
So, I love my Nooks. I have an HD+ and an HD, and I've had a Nook Color or two in the past. I recently gave my Nook HD to my daughter in favor of my HD+. She brought it to me today and told me that it will no longer charge or power on. We know it's not the charger cable as I have used all three of the OEM chargers that we have on my HD+ with absolutely no issues at all. When I plug the HD into the charger, the battery indicator light turns from a flashing green to orange into a constant flashing red light. If I hold down the power button and release after 20 seconds, I get an image that looks like a triangle warning image with a red full thermometer inside of it. Above the triangle there are red "steam" squigglies as if to indicate that the unit is overheating, however, it's not hot at all and has in fact been off for over three hours. She told me yesterday that when she plugs it in, sometimes it doesn't recognize the charge at all. The battery indicator will show 13-15% and discharging until she unplugs and plugs the charger back in at which point it would show the actual current charge. Can't get anyone to help me out on the B&N website so I thought that I would come here. Her Nook is completely stock, unrooted and we are the first and only owners. Anyone out there have any idea as to what the heck is going on, or should I just take it back to B&N? (About a week after it came out of the box, she dropped it while it was inside it's case and ended up chipping off a part of the plastic shell, not sure if they will even touch it with that problem)
I am handy with electronics when it comes to replacing components but crap with the software... If they won't take it I feel comfortable in replacing any parts that need replacing by myself. I would rather not because it is only about 4 months old. It is also very VERY heavily used. She's always got that thing in her face. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like a hardware failure. I would try to take it back, chip and all. If they won't replace it, I would consider buying a new one while they are on sale.

ook dead blinking yellow red wont charge [FIXED]
My Nook HD+ had been running great and was loaded with CM 10.1 for 09/01/2013. I had been on eleven day without a charge and finally widdled it down to 1% battery. This was with light usage of course. My nook powered off and from that point would not take a charge. I tried various hard reboot with the plug inserted and would get a brief battery icon with thunderbolt and then yellow and green flashing of the charging indicator light. It would often turn to red blinking as well. I let it charge for several days, tried different cables, and even tried to slow charge it from PC. I had read somewhere that sometimes when a battery got too low on some devices they would not charge. I decided to take my nook hd+ apart and attempt to hard wire the battery for a charge to a fabricated wall plug and wire cutters. Well it turns out that I didn't have to get that far. Just unplugging the battery cable from the motherboard somehow reset the battery and it started to finally power on. I immediately plug the charger back in and let it get a good charge before I put all the screws back in. The tear down process was very easy and I just followed a youtube video to do it. If anyone is in this situation, I would give this a try as it only took about 10 minutes and a small torx screwdriver.

The tablet is dead, it was suddenly. Won't charge or turn on and it's not recognised by the PC. Recovery mode (power button + volume-) doesn't work either.
I know that is not the screen, because the PC doesn't detect the tablet at all. I tried with another battery (my wife has the same tablet), but I had no luck. I also know that the charger and the usb cable are fine.
What else I can do, any ideas or suggestions?

Are you using the OE usb cable? Have you tried charging using the OE wallwart?

Yes, I'm using the OE usb cables (I have 2) and the OE charger.

I had the same symptoms after disconnecting and reconnecting battery,I hed to disconnect it for like an hour and then three times try to power on the tablet and it did power on. Maybe your battery is dead so after another hour you may try to use the other battery. If it will work, try to connect the batteries together so the dead one can get a little charge (but do some research I am not sure if it won't have a chance to damage anything) then the same after an hour connect try power on and if it powers on immediately give it a charge.

Just wondered if you had tried this and if so, how you got on? Asking because I bought my daughter one off ebay and it was working fine when I got it, am sure I recharged it once , she played it and then again in morning and thinks she played it till battery ran out. I have since tried charging via pc and mains power, and have disconnected battery twice (case was v. easy to remove so concerned this fault may be reason it was sold), but cannot get a flicker of a response on screen. i got my daughter this as she was desperate for an android tablet for mods for minecraft as I had bought her a Amazon Fire 7 and from what I could see just after xmas, it wasnt possible to root it or sideload at that time, and she said Amazon had no mods compared to the play store and she had been ecstatic with the mods she had found for her android for the short time she had it. I do know when I plug it into the wall charger that the motherboard area gets warm if its been plugged in for a while? Bit of a noob on this stuff,and off sick with probs with my nervous system so my concentration and memory can be a pia. Anyway I was wondering how I can find out if its goosed or what I can try? One of the batterys advertised on ebay is about £50 which seems steep to me, esp. if it doesnt fix it, and esp since I have been unable to work for a few years cos of this illness. Should I go the tablet\notebook type route or can they not handle minecraft? Bit confused by these new notebooks esp touchscreen ones as new ones seem to have small amounts of ram yet are v. popular.

Firt I would try to trickle charge the battery.
BEFORE YOU DO THIS:
Remove the SD CARD. I forgot to do this and snapped my card straight in half removing the back cover.
This started happening to my ME176 as well but of course not until after I retired it and gave it to my mom.
I would start by letting it sit on the charger for about 30 minutes (since we don't know the current charge state and if the overcharge block is functioning). This will give it a slight charge if dead.
Disconnect charger and remove the back cover and disconnect the battery (as posted earlier). Push and hold the power button a few times even though there is no power.
It may take a few tries of disconnecting and reconnecting the battery before it decides to power up, so keep the cover off while doing this.
