Hi there,
I have the HTC Kaiser service manual, but I'm trying to determine if I really need to open the phone all the way up in order to do this.
My 3MP camera on the back has a piece of something that is on the lens from the inside. Every picture I take has a shadow of this speck of... well, I don't know what.
Anyhow, I need to open the camera lens cover that's next to the speaker, but I'd rather not have to go pull apart the entire phone. The frustrating part is they show how to remove the camera, but they don't flip the board back over so I can see if I can get inside the little box and clean it.
Has anyone tried this? I see some disassembly threads here, but no one has concentrated on specifically cleaning the camera so far.
Thanks,
TTFN

haven't had the need to disassemble my kaiser yet but you can hit up mikechannon and ask his help on this.
cant you just pop the battery cover off and clean it out?
Nah... it's under the cover that's under the battery cover. If I take a picture without the battery cover, the crud is still there. It's just a speck. I can see it, but it's on the wrong side of the glass.

Did you ever get the dirt out from the wrong side of the lens? I have the same problem only I have quite a bit of dirt on the backside of the lens.
Thanks,
Frank K
No, I couldn't find any diagrams that showed the next level of disassembly of the actual camera part. Since this is my only phone right now, I didn't want to do too much exploratory surgery.
The gunk is still there of course. I just don't know how it got in there in the first place...
Sorry I couldn't help more.

I need to replace the front housing / front faceplate on my tilt. I have read the service manual and watched some videos on taking apart the tilt and have read the wiki etc. My question is do I really need to disassemble the whole unit to just replace the front faceplate? It looks like I may just need to remove 4 screws on the rear of the faceplate. So can I remove the faceplate by just removing those screws or do I need to dissasemble the whole phone?
thanks!
taz
oh and I searched tis forum too, but to no avail. I dont want to take apart the whole unit if it isnt necessary.
Yes you can.
Refer to manual attached.
Info is in this forum so search again if you need more info.
freakin awesome. I had searched a ton for something like this and did not find anything, maybe because I was using the terms front housing and faceplate in my searches - I just didn't know what else it would be called. Thank you SO much, this will save me a huge hassle!
taz
Instructions will work - but you have to be pretty carefuly not to damage the rest of the unit and overflex the hinges. Potential for having the top and bottom section gap large than you would like.
Did the ENTIRE housing yesterday - wasn't that bad - just have to keep track of the screws and not forget anything. Have to follow the directions carefully esp when removing the keyboard from the housing - the plastic stick on piece really has to be removed. Followed the official HTC manual from Mike Channon and the only thing I didn't do was completely take apart the SIM to separate the slider. In hindsight should have done that to tighten the hinges a bit so the tilt mechanism is a little more firm. Held my breath when I pressed the power button but it powered up and it worked perfectly all day.
thanks for the tips stim!
I just got done replacing the front cover and everything fit back together ok, one spot on one of the sides has a very slight gap now where the new cover and the rest of the phone don't 100% touch but it is barely noticeable and you would probly only notice it if you were looking for it.
One thing that is missing from those instructions, is that there is one screw that you have to remove after unplugging the 2 ribbon cables, this screw is a B*tch to remove and even harder to put back. It was such a pain to put back that I determined it wasnt necessary and left it out. If you're looking at the front of the phone, this tiny screw is located on the upper right corner.
so I'm hoping that the gap will eventually close more on on that one problem area but I'm not too concerned with it.
thanks again for the instructions Mister B

I dropped my phone the first week I owned it and scratched up the battery cover. I was really annoyed by the scratches so I decided to try a replacement battery cover from eBay. I also bought replacement speaker grills just in case I messed up the old ones.
This is the cover I bought http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=201096888026&alt=web
And these are the speaker grills http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=151359726117&alt=web
UPDATE: Thanks to @xHighAlert for pointing out that new cover was missing the NFC antenna. The old antenna may be able to be removed with a heat gun and a lot of patience I went ahead and ordered a new one.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-AT-T-HT...NFC-ANTENNA-FLEX-CABLE-ORIGINAL-/161394718926
The new Gunmetal Gray cover was just a hint lighter than the OEM one but not enough to notice unless they were sitting right next to each other. It comes with new camera lenses. Taking the M8 apart wasn't all that hard and ifixit has a good tutorial here http://youtu.be/YP0glVbQfWQ .
The top speaker grill left some adhesive behind when unpeeled it up so that needed removed before applying the new one. Also after the phone was apart the old camera lens was still attached to the camera so you could probably pop the new one out of the new cover and not worry about that, but I went ahead and removed the old lens and cleaned off the adhesive left behind. On reassembly everything went together perfectly and the whole operation only took about 20 mins including putting away the tools and cleaning up.
Update: Even though I ordered an NFC antenna from eBay I got bored and figured I'd see how hard it is to remove the one from my old battery cover. With a little love from a heat gun(hair dryer would work) the antenna peeled up very easily with absolutely no damage. I then opened my phone back up, installed the antenna, and buttoned it back up with no issues at all. NFC works once again.
The bonus is no more VZW branding!

Good job! I did this on the m7, and it was an absolute ***** to repair! No adhesive on the back? What new adhesive did you apply? Are your speaker grilles a tad bent?

The only adhesive I had to deal with was on the speaker grills and the new grills came with the adhesive already on them. Grills are perfectly smooth and straight.
After messing with the phone for a little bit I realized that the power and volume buttons feel better than they did when the phone was brand new!

Nice, nice! But do you see any bending when you reflect light off them, because my m8,and most of the others I've seen do.. It's like it's slightly more depressed in some places than others.. Also, are they completely flush with your screen?

Amazing! I noticed that on my m7 too! Does the ir blaster still work well? And are the volume and power buttons loose and wobbly or nice and tight? Is the front camera glass a part of the grille or stuck on?

I thought that the M8 was a ***** to replace parts on. Good to know that if it gets damaged I can replace it, thanks.

Looking a little closer the bottom grill seems like it may be depressed in one spot more than the rest of it. It looks like they are flush with the screen but I have a .33mm tempered glass screen protector on it so it would be hard to be 100% positive.
IR Blaster works perfectly. Power and volume buttons are nice and tight and they stick out just a bit more than OEM which makes it a little easier to feel them when not looking directly at the phone. When I bought my M8 the buttons were almost too flush with the body. The front camera glass is adhered to the camera with some adhesive tape but the new grill came with a new lens already loaded with the adhesive tape so I replaced it. I'm assuming you could leave the old one on if you wanted to.
I didn't really have any dents in my old cover, it was just scratched up. But I'll post some pics anyway.

Well, congrats! That is one of the neatest repair jobs I've ever seen!
Awesome replacement! Doesn't look too hard to do if I ever need to do it and the quality looks great
The black band you see in the old cover, with gold contact pads, is the NFC antenna (Surrounding the camera ring). The older HTC Sensation had a similar setup with the shell for practically all of it's antennas.
Shouldn't you transplant that? Is that even a possibility?
Try using NFC with this replacement cover. Unfortunately, I'd bet you any money you no longer have NFC capabilities.

LoL. Good catch! Never even noticed it. It looks like it may be removable with a heat gun and some patience but I went ahead and ordered a new NFC antenna. I can't remember the last time I used NFC.

Are there any companies out there that do this for you? I have a Harmon/Kardon edition and I'd like to have the gunmetal gray back/speaker grills instead of the gold/black combo. I'd do it myself but I feel that I'd do something wrong with it.

@neilrl79 How hard was it to detach the rear housing? Is it held in with clips. I also managed to scratch mine up and am planning on doing the same thing.

ifixit has a nice guide. You have to remove the two grills which are glued on. Then there's a number of screws you need to remove. Once you do that I think all you have to do is use a guitar pick or something similar and stick it between the black plastic border around the screen and metal housing and basically pry it open.

I wonder if it is strong enough to be chromed? Think I might ask around a bit...
I need help finding a peice. I ordered a screen replacement and it did not come with the plastic screw mount. I attached a picture of the part I need.
I need this peice because the old one has old adhesive strips stuck to it and I can't remove them.

You can remove the adhesive. Rub it with your finger, and it will start to roll up and come off. And yes, it is a slow, labor intensive process, but it does work.
Anybody know how to replace this piece? I don't know how to separate the plastic from the glass.
Hi guys,
has anyone of you tried changing the front glass without digitizer and display?
In disassembly videos I can only see people changing the whole thing.
Also, do you think I can manage to repair the front glas as well as the USB port with just an iron instead of a hot air blower (and the usual tools made of plastic)?
Thanks in advance!

I haven't done the front glass on mine yet, but my understanding is that in general you're really better off replacing front glass as an entire unit with digitizer and display. An iron on pretty low through a cloth/towel might well work. It's not just glue that melts, it's a thin strip of rubber gasket material with adhesive (okay, maybe it's thick glue, but it looked pre-formed to me) holding the glass back cover on.
Heating probably helps a bit with softening the stuff, but after the first time you peel it up you won't really need to do that again. I'd recommend picking a corner (say, bottom left as you're looking at the back) and just plan on prying from there every time, so you only have one spot where the plastic gets marred.
Don't spend too much time heating, worry more about having a suction cup tool that you can lift with while you try to work a guitar pick or hobby knife or something in under the corner. Have at least two ready, so you can wedge one in, and work your way around without it just dropping back down on you. You'll probably tear the material a bit but that's okay, just spread it back out evenly around the edge on the glass before you put the cover back on. Also, you definitely should be using a case to make sure it doesn't just fall off in your pocket once you've opened it up a couple times.
USB cable replacement isn't awful, just time consuming. The biggest gotcha is to keep all three of the little gold clips on the plastic "mid frame" ring (that's the first thing you remove that requires screws after getting the back glass up) from fallling and getting lost.
You can PM me if you have any questions about this, I've replaced my USB cable/port assembly a couple times (first replacement was defective). And I'm about to attempt replacing the screen as a whole unit with glass & digitizer on my wife's Z2 Plus, so I'll let you know how that goes.
