[Q] XT1097 using mobile data even when disabled - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm having a problem with my XT1097.
I leave the mobile data network connection disabled most of the time (I use Wi-Fi most of thye time). Despite that, the fone company (TIM-Brasil) reports that my data connection is active and using data.
Yesterday, even considering that I didn't enable the data connection at all, I received a message reporting that I had used the full data cap for the day (a pre-paid plan with 10MB data cap per day. Small, but usually enough for what I need).
Checking the history of my plan, I found that the Moto X started doing that from day 1 when I bought it. My previous fone, a Galaxy Note (GT-N7000), didn't do that. At the time my Moto X ran Kitkat unmodified and later I rooted it. This continued behavior continued with Lollipop 5.0 (unrooted). This week I updated to 5.1 (also not rooted) and the problem persists.
I contacted the phone provider (Tim-Brasil) to reset the mobile data config, but the problem persists.
Has any one seen anything like this?
Thanks,
DrydenK

21,6MB used since 17/June. A lot less than indicated by the phone company. At Tim's site, it says 2MB just today. And as I said, it reached 10MB yesterday, where no data usage was shown at all by Moto X.

Is it possible that some app is turning the data connection on and then shutting it down again? If so, how do I find out which one is doing that?

Try turning off data AND restrict background data, see if that helps.

Ok. I've enabled this restriction. Another thing I tried is changing Location from "High accuracy" to "Device only", since possibly this could also register as data usage.
Thanks.

Ok. With both changes active, the Tim site indicated that there is no more internet traffic, and it stopped shortly before I disabled the high precision GPS. To make sure that this is what was generating the traffic, I will remove the data restriction and leave only the limited GPS in place. In 24 hours I will be able to verify if the GPS was indeed the culprit (the billing page in Tim Brazil site does only update after midnight).

I checked in the data usage at TIM, and with the GPS High Precision disabled no data is being charged any more. So I consider this matter closed.
So, as a reminder: WATCH OUT FOR THE GPS SETTINGS. YOU FONE COMPANY MAY CHARGE YOUR GPS DATA AS INTERNET DATA USAGE IF YOU USE 'HIGH PRECISION GPS!'
Thank you AGISCI for your tips.

[Q] Good data usage monitoring app?

I only signed 200MB/month plan, is there any good tool to monitor daily data usage? Thanks in advance.
3G watchdog seems to have good rating in the market. D/l'd it, but I haven't really used it. Give that a try.
I use Netcounter seems to work fine and is does not have a whole lot of "bling" to it. It just does what you got it for watch how much data you are using.
I use 3g watchdog along with APNdroid. 3g watchdog counts all your usage for the month, and you can set warnings and to shut it off if it goes over a certain usage with APNdroid.
I have my 3G watchdog set to turn off all my data automatically if I get to 99% of my usage using APNdroid. It then turns it back on automatically after the new month starts.
P.S. You can use 'AT&T myWireless' to check your data usage straight from at&t.
I use the AT&T app - it isn't that great.
But.. the AT&T website actually has something useful for those that are curious about their data usage. You can check your past data usage over the past year and gives you a pretty bar graph.
Thankfully mine was well below the 2 gig limit I have for my current plan. Got screwed with my grandfathered data plan since I switched from iPhone to Android

Excessive 3g usage N7000 Airtel Kolkata

I have activated 3G service on my note. Got the 2gb for Rs 450 plan. I have noticed that there is a huge difference between the usage shown my 3g watchdog (and settings>data usage) and Airtel records (by *123*11#). If I use "Internet" browser just for a minute of casual browsing and close the browser, then upon checking the balance on airtel it shows I've used 9-15mb within a minute whereas 3g watchdog reports a much realistic usage. The difference is nearly 10 times.
I have tried searching a lot online. Have got tips like restricting background usage of apps to wifi only and disabling automatic backup and restore. Have done all that and yet the problem continues.
What could be he problem? I'm totally at a loss. Its been just 3 days and I've hardly used 3g since I have wifi at home and yet as pet airtel records I have used more than 400mb. No videos or songs were downloaded and no YouTube.
Have any of you guys noticed such a huge difference between the usage reported by your device and operator? A few kb here and there is fine but 4mb cannot be reported as 40mb! Please help.

Same problem with me here in Delhi. Casually use internet just for browsing. But, the data usage is always way too high. I think it is a problem with the Airtel servers not the galaxy note.

I use 3g on my note in Mumbai(Airtel) with the same plan that you have mentioned. I have tried many data counters apps and settled on onavo because it gives me the closest value that you get on *121*11#. Still when onavo reaches 80-85% my plan gets over and they start charging per kb. But your case sounds too extreme. If as you say u don't have many apps and have no mods or custom rom then its Airtel to blame.

What about the inbuilt data usage counter in ICS? Does it show the correct usage?
Thats way too extreme bro even I'm from Calcutta although I don't use Airtel cos their network sucks at my place.
It seems the apps are eating up all your bandwidth. I am on Aircel 3G and don't have problem like yours.
Since you tried all the possible methods all I can suggest you to keep Data Network Mode deactivated when you not using it and also switch to GSM mode.
Use 3G mode only when you plan to use it because androids are way to net savvy
Atleast that way it won't be able to use the high speed network and you can still save a lot of your data.
I too noted the difference between the third party app and the stock one. As soon as i installed a third party one the stock showed very little activity. Just use the stock data monitory and track your usage and also switch to 2G when u dont need 3G to save battery and usage. Also the *121*11# dosnt seem to be working for me? I am too on Airtel (postpaid)

in my case a third party data monitor app 3g watchdog and stock ics data monitor show nearly the same usage.. difference of .01-.10 KB maybe. Try *123*11#. That shows very very high usage.

I don't gave that many apps.. lol.. what will eat bandwidth? Haha.. surprisingly in 2g mode on a 2g plan the data usage reported is somewhat believable.
Any kolkata users using 3g on operators besides airtel and aircel? Vodafone maybe? I'm thinking of porting out to vodafone.
I talked to an airtel representative and he's like go to a relationship centre and prove it first and only then we will check. I really don't think I have the time for that.

I recommend to root your phone and get LBE Privacy Guard or even LBE Security Manager from the corresponding xda thread. It let's you restrict internet acces for every app. I use Security Manager since it offers an option to set up certain apps so you are asked if they should be allowed to access internet. Privacy Guard only offers the possinility to allow or deny internet access permanently.

I'm a little wary about rooting. What I'm planning to do is to try our sim cards of different networks in kolkata and see whether the problem persists or not. If yes then obviously something is wrong with my note. If not then its Airtel's mistake and I'd port out to that operator which does fairbl billing, retaining my existing number. I dont really see any other option left.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
OK. I tried his. On my 3g plan, I started using GSM ONLY mode from network options. Now I believe the note will connect only to EDGE and not 3g, right?
With this in mind I browsed 3-4 pages on tumblr for about a minute and disconnected. My operator shows 9.5mb of usage in a minute of browsing! Is that even possible on EDGE? Can I use 9.5mb of data in one minute with speeds offered on Edge?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
No it's not possible. Edge offers a data rate of 384 kbit/s. 384 * 60 /1000 / 8 = 2.88 MB. You should definitely contact your provider.

Having trouble with MMS. (Picture messages and group messages)

I have had my phone since the release date for Verizon. The only problem I have with it is I do not receive my MMS messages at all. I leave my data off whenever I have access to wifi. My old Droid Razr would send me a message saying I had a message from someone and needed to download it. But on my Moto X I do not recieve any messages and then when I turn on my data, I will randomly get 4-5 messages from the group/picture message.
Are there any settings I can change to fix this?

Why are you turning off your data? My phone goes well over 24 hours with every single thing enabled and heavy use. There's no reason to turn it off.
I have the same issue too with my Moto X. I leave my data off because I have not an unlimited data plan. I am from At&t.
If someone can help, it would be great.

I agree that the battery life is great. But does it use extra battery to leave data on while on WiFi?
I read somewhere that to fix you need to send yourself an email with a picture attached on gmail. However I am still unable to send while on WiFi.
This is a CDMA limitation and I am unaware of a workaround. If you turn off your data, you will not receive MMS messages.
Try leaving on your data, or switching to a GSM carrier.

Nope. The data portion actually gets turned off in software if you're on WiFi until there is something (MMS) that needs it. You will save nothing, and waste time turning mobile data off every time you get on WiFi.

THIS. You need to leave data on if you want to receive MMS. The system handles data very well and will only turn it on when needed while on wifi

Good to know! But I need mobile data turned on to send an MMS when connected to WiFi? Does this mean it still uses my mobile data?
MMS doesn't count against your data. It goes over your data connection but is not counted towards your limit.

Correct. MMS = picture messaging. That's how feature phones with no data plan can still use MMS.

I noticed a similar issue recently when I turned wifi and mobile data off.
I was troubleshooting a problem where Google Messaging had a running service "Messaging Transaction Service" that was holding a wakelock for hours causing increased idle battery drain. Using WLD I saw the wakelock was related to MMS, so I turned on my mobile data. This didn't immediately help, so I forced close the Messaging service, and I then immediately received the MMS. Up until that point, I had no notification that a MMS was pending.

Just to correct you. this is not a CDMA limitation. This is how all iOS and android smartphones work by design. MMS messages are sent through data, they do not use up your data allotment for the month.
Only time MMS would work with data off is if you have a wifi calling app such as the one some tmobile phones have. It does not exist for the moto x.

Suddenly unable to connect to home wifi

So my wife's motox decided to stop connecting to my home wifi/cable modem. My phone (LG G2) as well as all laptops/tablets connect fine. My G2 can see about 8 nearby networks, the MotoX always sees my neighbors network and occasionally a 2nd or 3rd but that's about it. If my home network finally shows up I enter the password and it immediately switches to "Out of range" and shows as a Saved network. I enabled the hotspot on my phone and the MotoX still didn't show the hotspot. Here are the things I've tried so far:
- Forget network and readd it if/when it finally shows up as a visible network.
- Cleared cache from recovery
- Rebooted
- Toggling airplane mode
- Disable just data
- Power cycled cable modem. Also Hard reset it and set the network back up.
- Disable wifi optimization, notify when open network is available, as well as the always allow scanning.
- Switched from auto to 2.4 Ghz only.
- Switched between multiple channels on router.
The MotoX is the Canadian version, 4.4.2 stock, unrooted. Router is an awesome Hitron piece of crap but it's been working perfectly fine for months.
Short of doing a factory reset, does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

Some routers can't handle certain number of conectinons, try rebooting your router
The router is built in with the cable modem which I've already rebooted as well as reset completely. Also with the phone only able to see a couple of networks at a time when there should be 8 - 10 visible at any time I think the phone is the problem. I just can't figure out what happened.

A few users have randomly had issues with WiFi, and their issues were only resolved by flashing the entire stock SBF as per the "Return to Stock" thread.
If a factory reset does not resolve your issue, you may consider SBFing back to stock. Since you will be flashing the stock rom (with matching CID), this is possible even with a locked bootloader.
Good Luck
I saw some posts about the SBF thing but wasn't sure if that applied to an unrooted / locked device or not. Thanks for the info.

Ok so wifi decided to crap out again. This time I did a full wipe (internal storage included) and now wifi doesn't even turn on. It flips to ON for half a second then immediately back to off. Bluetooth does the same thing. I've called my provider (Rogers) and they're sending me another one.
Considering the wifi and bluetooth are on the same chip I guess the whole chip is toast or loose or something. Either way its well beyond a software fix.

You did a full wipe, but did you actually SBF back to stock? As I had commented previously, ONLY a full SBF back to stock can repair a corrupted filesystem. A "Full wipe" just erases cache and userdata.
SBFing actually REPLACES all the partitions. If you haven't tried, you can't say for certain that it is well beyond a software fix. It could have simply been a corrupt file...
Good Luck
If it was my phone I would have tried a SBF but considering it's my wife's she's a big more hesitant to let me and if they're sending us a new one, why bother?

[Q] Z3C connects to mobile internet although disabled

Hi,
currently, I don't have an unlimited data plan, but switch on mobile internet on demand, for a single day. Most of the time I'm using wifi.
Now, I own my Z3C only for two weeks. Some days ago, I was travelling and thus configured and switched on mobile internet for the first time with this phone, for a single day. I am pretty sure I switched mobile internet off in the evening.
But looking into my provider's online overview today, I noticed that since then, my phone used mobile internet from time to time (about every five hours or so). The amount of data seems to be low (<1kB), but anyway, up to today that triggered four additional days of mobile internet usage without me needing that and even without me knowing that.
Can anybody explain what's going on there - and especially how to switch that behavior off?
The phone is stock, unchanged, and unrooted (all updates installed). No MMS have been sent or received. The data usage in settings does not give any helpful information.
Your not alone, im having the same problem. I haven't found any solutions nor any reference to such problem until now. I also have stock rom, hardly any additional apps, turned off automatic updates etc. But it still connects to internet, behind my back for A SECOND, sometimes in every ten minutes, sometimes once a day. A temp solution is to delete the APN settings, but this does not solve the problem.
SO CAN ANYONE HELP US?
I have a guess. It's either Anonymous data sending or phone usage. These two .apks send anonymous data to Sony, probably even using mobile data. It's a guess tough.
Nevertheless, I have removed them since I'm rooted.

You can try Onavo, but I believe those services will be masked under OS/Android, so it's hard to pinpoint them.
Also you van try the default app in > Settings, Data Usage (Mobile Data only)

In the meantime, I found a cure: Changing Settings -> Location -> Mode from "High accuracy" to "Battery Saving" immediately stopped the network access.
According to some other forum, assisted GPS is the reason, so using either "High accuracy" or "Device only" will both cause GPS to ask the mobile network for AGPS data from time to time. It is yet unclear to me why this also happens when I have an active WLAN connection.
With that knowledge, removing ",supl" from the APN type (and saving the APN afterwards!) could also disable fetching of AGPS data from the mobile network while mobile internet is switched off, but I didn't test that yet.

As far as I understood things, that will not help, because "device-only" still activates GPS and thus still uses AGPS.
Did you try it already? What are your findings?

I just checked, it made no changes (device only). Today from 00.00 to (strangely) 11.00 clock, is the internet on/off count 53 times. I can see that the connections were 0 sec and 1 kB. So what now?

So i switched GPS off all together, and it seems to be working, no internet connection has been made. I also noticed that for a while the device changed the settings from device only to high accuracy itself. I deleted the ",supl" lets see what happens.
Actually the phone stopped surfing on its own before i deleted "supl" and i think the problem was google and its location history. Im going to test furder. Did you get it under control?
So, over a month has passed and i have some good and bad news. The good news is, that the problem for me has stopped(12.02), the bad news is, i don't know why. I made many changes and now i don't know what affected it. But my guess is that it was the deleting of "supl". Because in one month i had all the settings(location, battery saver etc) on and off and it didn't affect the data usage. 16.03 i got lollipop on my device and this also didn't change it back.
