[Q] VZW throttling UDP plans? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Maybe I have a bad phone or some kind of weird configuration error, but I noticing that speedtest seems to not being able to go any higher than 20/20 on my Nexus 6.
Did the test on several places around NYC, no matter what, same result.
I'm stock, bootloader unlocked and rooted, nothing fancy or changed and my usage is less than 10GB a month.
My question is, does anyone else has the same problem?

Not that I'm complaining, just that I find it weird that i always get the number, when i see others posting way higher numbers.

..and way lower numbers as well.
of course when ppl post speed tests, they usually post their highest numbers, and not low numbers. but, as always, speeds vary 100% of the time. if your network is busy, youll get lower speeds, when the network is slower(like 4am) youll get higher speeds.

Agreed on all accounts, but like I said, just so strange that no matter what, it seems to just not pass 20.

[Q] Data only on wifi?

Hey, does anybody know a way to use an android phone without a data plan? I know you can disable data in wireless network settings but then you can't receive mms. Does anybody know a way to do this?
EDIT: I should add that this is a Android Iphone not a htc hero

No. You need a data plan for MMS and SMS and calls, no way around that

Oh I was going to say, if it was on Sprint, you could get that one data plan for people with hearing disabilities... I'm sure you'd be able to receive MMS through that.

This sure is one confusing thread.
If this is a question about having an iPhone on a plan without data (it is... right?), then I have no idea. I'm assuming it's not unlocked and is on AT&T? I would think they require a data plan for iPhones, but I really have no idea.

It has nothing to do with an iphone, thats why I didn't bring it up in the first place. Its just getting android working using only wifi for data, but leaving the data corrected to 3g so mms will work

OK, so you want an Android phone to not be on a data plan, and rely on wi-fi for that stuff, but still have it connect to 3G for MMS? No, that probably would not be really feasible at all, unless someone can correct me..

Also, if it is an iPhone (we are talking about an iPhone here, right? Running 2.2 or something? I am still confused..), it does matter to know that, since I do not think AT&T allows iPhones on a data-less package anyway.

First of all, not the point
Second. My friend does have a data less iphone
See what happens right now is when he turns his iphone on (the iphone OS) a little pop up shows up and says that he does not have a data plan and data will not be used. But it still connects to the 3g network, and he can get mms.
I was asking if there was a way to do that in Android, thats all. Even if its not as simple as the iphone os. Just that it uses wifi when its needs data access.

Yeah, I don't know if it's an iPhone or Android, but either way I think no is still the answer
Being someone that just switched from iPhone to Hero you might be better off asking this on a place like sinfuliphone.com at least I think that's the site I used to go to.
Not sure what any of this has to do with a CDMA HERO though.

[MOD] Data Governor Mod for MIUI 12.24

Heya Folks,
I followed the instructions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...43&postcount=1 and applied them to the services.jar from the latest build of MIUI.
See the attached flashable .zip file. I strongly suggest making a nandroid backup due to this being my first attempt at doing this. It booted just fine on my device.
Let me know if it works!
posted by gmichael
I think a bit of clarity is needed here. This mod will only stop Verizon from slowing down your data speeds.
It will NOT help you avoid overage charges.
For example let's say you're on a 250mb a month plan. This mod only ensures that you will get 250mb at unrestrcited speeds. Going over 250mb will still result in an overage charge.
Also, the reason people keep referring to 5gb on their "unlimited" plan is because Verizon starts to throttle data speeds after 5gb of data. That doesn't mean you get charged more, Verizon just slows you down. This mod will prevent that, and only that.
I hope that clears things up.

Heya,
Only way to test would be to run a speedtest.net over your 3g connection before and after flashing. My 3G sucks here so I can't really test it. I followed it step by step going off of the instructions however.
Just curious if anyone tested this? I know the zip works just curious if anyone has played around with it. My 3g sucks where I live so I feel it isn't an accurate test here

I don't think you will notice a difference, I thought this mod pretty disabled throttling after you use 5GB of data in a month
Sent from your mom's phone
Can't speak for the MIUI, but SR 3.5 showed significant improvements.
Guess it doesn't hurt to give it a shot.
So can this be flashed to any rom? I have a droid x and I am using the Liberty rom.
No, it is ROM specific.
I tried this patch on 1.1.7 N1 services.jar and got a FC in settings>system>Mobile Network settings. Does a similar thing happen on 12.24 Dinc?
No, this particular thread only worked for 12.24 for the incredible...

No, because there is no difference and flashing this on any rom does nothing but break your one settings menu as mentioned.
As has been previously stated this feature is not actively used by verizon, if it was used you would see a notification icon in regards to it when it is enabled as that is part of the code.
This feature was built by google as an option for carriers should a large majority of customers use android devices, but the bottom line is if vzw wants to throttle your data they do it at the account/network level. Not on your device. Any improvement people report from making this change is a complete placebo / fluke or just a fluctuation in their signal quality / network congestion at the time.

[Q] Super fast speeds?

Just yesterday, I used CWM and got Andromeda 2.1 on my phone. Just by playing around with it I saw SGS Tools. There was a thing at the very bottom of the list in the secret codes which was called "Switch 3G--- HSPA". I looked it up on Google to see what it does, then I started playing with it. Finally I chose the option that is usually stock, and I used the speedtest. I usually get low 3.00's where I was, but yesterday I was getting around 4-6 mbps. My highest speed was 6.07. So what did I do to make it so fast? Did I break the AT&T restrictions? Also if I did, will it make my bill cost more?

[Q] Any way to trick the Bionic that 4G is WiFi?

I've looked around and can't find anything. Is it impossible to trick the Bionic that 4G is WiFi?
Curious why?
Probably looking to get around data usage.
I'm interested in this as well. I think it's pretty lame that when I try to upload a video (1080p 1min duration) from my phone to Youtube it tells me I have to be on WiFi. Maybe this is to prevent users from exceeding their allotted data limit...or just cut down on traffic, but I don't like it.
fooling ur 4g for wifi
actually i think ur on to something they may want to control the data usage and the traffic but they still throttle for that purpose they can lie all they want bout vzw not doing that but bs we all know they do! im sure give it time and someone will figure out a way to fool the phone hell y not they come up with everything else! remember droid does!
I, too, wouldn't mind this.
Swyped from my Droid Bionic, unless I was in landscape, in which case I Swiftkeyed the hell out of it.

various reasons. One is so that I won't be restricted when certain apps require wifi (i.e. some Amazon Apps). It's ridiculous to require wifi when Verizon's LTE is so blazing fast.

DTR mods are nothing more than a placebo. They are based on a gross misunderstanding of how throttling works and are no more effective than wrapping your phone in aluminum foil and slathering it with apple butter.
MMMmmmmmm... apple butter.
Other than that, maybe check out my attempt to get anyone interested in what you are referring to.

Also, when trying to download apps from Play Store, small apps are taking forever to download.
So it's not just some incompatibility with Speedtest
I really wanna keep myself off of XDA, the more and more I read the more and more I wish I kept my SGS2 ):

I have no idea what you mean by "WiFi Canal"
but if you're talking about changing my WiFi channel, there is no need - every wireless device in my house gets great speeds:
Galaxy Nexus (x2, 2 family members have them)
Nexus 7
Asus EeePC 1000HE
MediaCentre PC
so it's nothing to do with my router, or my WiFi configuration. It's the phone.

(Try McDonalds wifi too ?)
I have a feeling it's your router and/or firewall settings.
For example, on my friends connection It'll take me 5mintues to DL a 3mb app from the playstore, but the speedtest is just fine. At home, it'll download in a second or two.
While the phone is the only thing experiencing the issue, your router is the only thing that could be causing it. Have you tried anyone elses wifi?
