So I recently got a new Nexus 6 in 32GB. Out of the box I have 23.03GB available. Despite this, I did some research and some people reported having around 25GB free storage. There is no carrier bloatware, this is straight from the Play Store. Why is this the case. Does it have something to do with encryption? If, can someone please point me in the direction in which steps to take to regain 2GB? I am on the latest 5.1.1 factory image as well.
Thanks in advance
bump
im on m, and have 25.98gb. it would all depend on what you have in your system. i, for one, like to delete a bunch of system apps. so mine would show more storage, because my system side would take a bit less space(because i deleted a bunch of system apps). so 23gb sounds very possible. plus, for 5.1.1, that might be the right amount.
23 sounds right. The 64 has 54+change. That would be the same difference for the system partition.
I am almost certain it is supposed to be 25GB? My friend running pure stock 5.1.1. has around 25GB free with nothing installed. It's kinda weird considering the OS is less than a GB.

There is way more than just the OS in there. Have all the firmware also. Probably about 15 partitions.

True, however, I am still hunting down why someone would have 2GB more than me. Could it be due to the fact my phone is encrypted, or running a encrypted bootloader?

Removing things from /system will do nothing for the amount of reported free space as the size of /system isn't changing, and normal apps cannot write to /system, so Settings > Storage completely ignores what is there. It only looks at the /data partition, as that is where people and apps have read/write access.

Sorry in advance for my not perfect english.
I'm using less than 7GB on my Moto X "16gb" but it says that I don't have space left.
When I'm checking with ES Explorer 3, with the options ticked to show all hiddens files, it's said that what I take is less than 7GB. The same on Windows and Linux.
But when I do the ES Explorer 3: SD analyser it's said that 11.41GB is used, but if I calcul everything single size on that screen, I see only less than 7GB.
So what is all about that?
What I really want is to know how do I get my 5GB left? I use only 7GB out of 12GB. So, in simple mathematics, 12-7=5!!!
I don't wanna remove my 7GB stuff because I'm supossed to have 5GB left.
I put the pictures too in the attachments box.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT:
I was needed to delete some user stuff but now, without adding anything, is re-say that I don't have space left
I'm tired of this sh*t. NOBODY to help? I payed for 12GB but don't have it, I'm sick of this

I don't see a LOST.DIR folder and I never deleted file on the phone from the computer, only from the phone itself.
Still don't know what to do :/
It's there a efficient way to see if there's actually a LOST.DIR folder? I mean beside just plugged in on Windows or Linux?
Anyways, thanks for your post
Only other thing other than that folder, is maybe needing to just flash stock again. And see if its fine after.
But you could keep searching on missing space.... There's many many threads for other devices too. Your issue may not be device specific and Troubleshooting ideas from other devices could help.
Or sit tight and see if anyone has other ideas.
But don't downgrade android versions. You'd need to flash the version you're on now again.

How to flash stock again if I'm not rooted? Also I don't want to lost my files on the sdcard...
I gonna see elsewhere but it's bad needing to see everywhere for such a thing, I still not understand why is possible
EDIT:
I keep searching but still not found the same problem than me, they said the same message but the phone itself actually that there a those GB free, beside me that it said that I only have MB free.
I don't wanna reset my phone because this not supossed to happen, never...
The worse is I can't even install a 500kb app lol
EDIT 2: I unistalled a big app but still cannot the 500kb one WTF Happen?
It maybe isn't "supposed" to happen... But things just happen.
See return to stock section in the "complete Moto x guide" in general. You can flash some ways without losing data. But in your case with corrupt partition, I would wipe it all. Or it might not get fixed. Transfer important things to your pc. As far as apps and data, try helium. I hear it doesn't need root. Then transfer is backup to your pc too.

No point in stressing about why... Or how it should be... It is what it is now.
If you can't communicate with the pc properly, you may have issues flashing also. Try another cable maybe?
I'm not sure what else to say. Flashing to stock is maybe the only way. Sorry!

That's for guys that want to relock theirs. Just skip "fastboot oem lock" at the end.
Look up RSDLite as well, another way to return to stock.
Just manually updated to 5.0.1 and my phone is showing 23gb total space. I purchased the 64gb version. Unfortunately I never thought to check this earlier, so I guess it's possible they sent me the wrong version. Box showed 64gb as well.
I feel like I read something about a user's space showing the incorrect amount after doing something. Is that possible?
I saw posts from a couple of people that got 32gb phones when they ordered 64. I suspect that is what happened to you.

There have also been threads about the partitions being flashed wrong. Could very well be a 64gb that shows up as a 32gb.

fastboot format userdata
The factory image apparently assumes we all have the 32gb model so when it flashes, the system thinks that's what you have. Had the same issue with the last release. Yes, you'll lose all your data, but you'll have 64...er...53gbs available again.
Um Sorry, Not true.

Did the same thing with the OTA and no issues. But flashing the factory images showed mine with the lesser storage. Simple command like I posted in my previous response fixes it. Not entirely sure, but I believe I read before that the factory image sets the partition size to the smaller storage amount. Dunno why it would or if its true, but easily fixed.

Yes it does require a Factory Restore to regain the storage space.
Yeah tried that didn't work. Reflashed then did factory reset then loaded root n recovery. Feeling good.

Hey guys! So I just saw that the 7.1 preview is coming to our Shamu next month, and it includes the seamless updates the Pixel and Pixel XL are getting! What does this mean as far as our phones partitions? Are they going to be changed from what we're used to? And does this mean it could update itself and potentially brick because of mods we may have? Thanks!
Will i think that you wont get an update if you were in mod as you cant get it now if you rooted or on a customized rom anyway are you sure that we will get it can you show me your sources
My understanding is that the update partition functionality is tied to the hardware, so it won't work on the N6 - I have no specific reference on that (you can look for it as well as I can), it's just what I remember from what I've read. And I'm not worried about the risk of bricking my N6 - it would be unrealistically reckless of Google to issue an update which would break our phones.
But I'll keep my TWRP backups safely on my laptop just in case...
Edit: "are you sure that we will get it can you show me your sources"
Ah, untrusting junior members. He sounds almost like me...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/nexus-6-nougat-7-1-preview-t3483997
It may be possible to implement seamless updates through repartitioning of internal storage, but to do it would leave about 11GB left for user files after all is said and done. Not a pretty picture, thus we're not getting seamless updates. Not only that, on a site full of tinkerers and developers, seamless updates would be useless because of our penchant for customizing Android.
My only comment would be is why would we even need it,and why would they waste time implementing it since our device is eol?? And yes I know we will get security updates for awhile but those won't be that big in size.
If there is indeed code for the seamless partition in the N6 build (I wouldn't recognise it if it bit me on the ankle...) isn't it just because Google are trying to keep the code as standard across devices as possible? In my programming life I've seen many programs with code which is active for some purposes and just ignored when non-applicable. It may be a bit of an overhead in the code size, but a few KB here or there don't matter much these days.
So your question "why would they waste time implementing it" - I would say "For the N6, they aren't".

Yea it's definitely all too hazy at this point, I saw a video of I think it was a 5x or a 6p running the new beta, and in the software update area, it said something about seamless updates, like, the developer preview allowed seamless updates on the older Nexus. That's about the time last night I decided to make this thread! lol honestly, my thoughts on this are what's in the op as well as this....... is this going to make manual fastboot flashing more of a pain? like, a crap load of new partitions to worry about on top of the like, 7 partitions Nexus devices already have? And also, mods would be so much harder to use knowing that when the system chooses to update and swaps your system, all your mods would be completely gone!
It was already mentioned that it won't update when modded much like they don't know with root and a non stock system, BUT if your second system partition is unmodified, then it could potentially update that and swap you to that one ._.
Confusing I know, too early to say for sure, but I thought this thread would get interesting.
EDIT: I just downloaded the 7.1 beta for the 6p and looked inside it, the img files all look normal, nothing out of the ordinary. bootloader, boot, radio, system, recovery, userdata, cache, and vendor.

Copy that, yea the factory images won't change much because you are still only flashing one set of partitions
I can only see this as a positive though for people who don't know wth they are doing and like 10 unsuccessful boots will auto boot the other set of partitions, and the seamless update part

Yes that's about right. There was a discussion in early days talking about it. Essentially what is considered system files that can't be removed unless rooted.
