I have a T-Mobile retail 1st gen ( xt1053 ) that has been on AT+T since new with no issues. Now, since updating to the OTA 5.1 I've lost LTE. I get 4G, but I've confirmed I'm getting HPSA+ speeds only, and the notification lists "4G" whereas before the update to Loillipop it specified LTE. I've kept it stock since the update and everything else works, just no LTE.
Again, before the update I *did* get LTE. I've read about AT&T needing to "provision" an account for LTE, and that maybe this wouldn't be automatic if you were using a non-AT&T phone, but since i had LTE before with this phone, and the only change was the update, I don't know if that could be the issue.
Anybody else run into this ?

Unfortunately don't know the reason for that, would think something in the settings, or some update to the modem/radio?
But do have a question -my friend has the same phone Retail XT1053 using AT&T, but doesn't get LTE, at least wasn't before 5.0, will assume still not.
Wondering if you had to change any settings to get LTE -AT&T said it's not possible on that phone, but did see some posts in the past about changing some settings to get LTE (i.e, settings under data to automatic, etc) but his doesn't have the options mentioned.
Hope you get it figured out, will be interested, too
Family has 4 XT1053's on AT&T for the past 15 months and we all get LTE. Didn't have to do anything special. They put nano SIMs in our phones at one of their company retail stores, and it just works. Was roaming in Canada last week on Rodgers, and got LTE there as well. Don't remember having to do anything with the APN setting either. The XT1053 is missing one of the AT&T LTE bands which is on their model, but didn't think they were using that band in the US yet. Maybe that has changed and that band is used in your area. None of us have upgraded to 5.1 yet so can't comment on changes from the new OS.

When I switched from my Galaxy S2 on AT+T to the xt1053 I didn't have to change anything. I did have the same issue for a few days, but then one day LTE was there. Since the S2 was a non-LTE phone I just figured there was something that needed to happen on the backend for AT&T to enable it. If you search online there are numerous people having the same issue for multiple phones - usually non-AT&T specific unlocked models. Some people claim AT&T support was able to do something for them, others say that putting their SIM in an AT&T branded phone let it "register" and after that they got LTE. I didn't have to do either, it just came on after a couple days. I was about to go to the nearest AT&T store, but then LTE started working.
So...I don't know what the real fix was back then. Since I get good enough speed to stream, which is all I need, it's not critical, just annoying. It's been 2 weeks since I updated, so I'll probably head to the store this weekend to see if they can help.

Thanks. I went with the friend that has the XT1053 to a company AT&T store, showed them my phone, too, which is an AT&T branded XT1058 with LTE -he did seem a bit confused, but claimed mine could because it was AT&T branded, that his didn't support the bands for LTE but obviously people are able to get LTE on the XT1053 with AT&T
And once again LTE appeared without me doing anything. This time it just took longer than when I originally got the phone. Today ( 3 weeks exactly after flashing the OTA Lollipop update ) it decided to connect via LTE and not "just" 4G. As I said in the original post, back when I first got the phone ( Xmas 2013 ) it look 2 or maybe 3 days before it connected to LTE.
I just wish I knew what the trigger was.
Anyway, working now.

I have a Bionic I've been using on net10 with the att compatible sim. It was a HW C version of the bionic. I've recently acquired 2 of the HW A versions. Connects to tmobile no problem after nv edits and build.prop edits. My question is to the others who've been using a tmobile sim with the bionic... has anyone gotten better than edge in an area where they've updated to 1900mhz? I'm in Lexington,ky and came accross a couple of tweets from tmobile customers with new phones claiming to be running on 1900mhz here, but I'm still only able to get edge. I have no way to confirm that the network upgrade has really started in my area though, and tmobile isn't being forthcoming with their upgrade schedule. You'll hear about a few cities being added here and there, but I've been unable to come across a complete up to date list of cities that have been upgraded. Anybody having any better luck yet?

I have 2 HW As working on T-mobile with 3g as the icon. The bionic is build for WCDMA so 3g is all that will appear. I just did a speed test and got 4480kbps down and 1588kbps up with 121 ping. I am in Dayton Ohio where there is spotty upgrade areas. It might be in specific areas where it works, and not cover a whole region, at least that is the story for me.
That's encouraging then. Im about 12 miles south of the area where those tweets were sent from in lexington,ky. Maybe i should have went closer into town to really test my tmobile sim, but if faster than edge data is going to be that spotty I'll stick with my att sim. So are you saying that even after their upgrade is complete the bionic still won't get 4g on tmobile?
So I just ordered a pure edition so that I can use it on att. I know previously there had been some issues with making lte work with these pure editions but how is it now? Can I walk into the store and tell them I want a new sim for my phone and will it work fine with the lte bands? I am wondering if this has been resolved from att and moto as of late. Anyone who recently got their phone might know the best answer for this.
@Maknora,
You will not have any problems, at all. That is exactly what I did last week. Took only 10 minutes.
I have a Pure edition on AT&T, haven't had any issues with it.

Does your phone say LTE or 4g LTE for your pure moto x?
It says lte
mine just says LTE
Great. Mine does too now =)
Came from gs2, punched sim card to nano size and had no data. A 5 min online chat where I simply stated problem and provided IMEI solved the problem. Now phone says 4G LTE.
Same here. Took mine in 1 month ago and walked out with LTE. Even though on of the reps kept saying it wouldn't work

Based on your question, is there a difference between "LTE" only and "4G LTE"? Mine says the latter it's a 4G symbol with LTE rotated 90 degrees on the side. Sometimes I do see just 4G only (in a place with a repeater). I also was using LTE Discovery and when it says 4G LTE, the program shows the corresponding LTE band, else it shows HSDPA+.
In another thread, I was trying to find a way to enable the extra bands for the pure, without upgrading to Lollipop. Has anyone figured that out yet?

When you log into at&t.com what devices does at&t show that you have? I never bothered to update the IMEI and it says I have a Motorola Z830, which as best I can tell is not actually even a real handset.
When I first inserted my at&t SIM in my brand new X Pure Edition, it said "4G LTE" but after a reboot (or maybe a few I am not entirely sure), now it just reads LTE, which is what unbranded handsets display for LTE service.
4G LTE is at&t's Branding for LTE rather than an actual difference in technology.
Dan
My device too is listed as a Motorola Z830. Mine always shows data connection as 4g lte, even after many reboots. I am not familiar with the details you mentioned, but most importantly my device seems to work properly. If yours does too then the exact indicator may not matter.

Mine says I have a victara when I check the website. I've been switching between 4 phones lately (Moto X, Nexus 5, iPhone 6, Lumia 830) and LTE works on all of them, all with the same SIM card. I don't understand why some of you are having problems, I've never had an issue no matter what phone I've used.
The problem exists for users coming from non LTE phones. Mine was a galaxy s2.

So, anyways I have an AT&T unlocked and currently using it for TMOBILE.
I've read things from build.props changes to flashing band radios such as .33 to try to obtain 4gLTE.
Also changing APN settings. Went through t-mobile services at least 5 times through live chat and calling.
Went through AT&T live chat. EVEN WENT AS FAR TO CONTACT SAMSUNG.
Every attempt failed to help me achieve 4gLTE for Tmobile using the unlocked AT&T s5.
People said they are able to use their AT&T phones and have LTE for Tmobile.
But on the other hand people said it is not possible because the 2 carriers use different bands or radio towers or whatever.
So, can someone please tell me is there a solution to having and keeping LTE for T-mobile using an unlocked AT&T phone. It's been about 3 days of search after work and this search for the philosopher stone is tiring.

If your GF has a TMO S5 G900T phone its modem has all the LTE bands used by TMO. My S5 G900A and yours do not have ALL the TMO bands. But mine works just fine on TMO LTE. You need to check your baseband and android version. The last and best is G900AUCU2AOA1 and 4.4.4. If you don't have this, you must get the OTA update on your S5.
Search the XDA threads started by muniz_ri on how to root a G900A.
Good Luck.

So, I got everything under that thread to work. I was unable to get the OTA update on my phone, but following that thread I was finally able to get 4.4.4.
Stilll, I cant recieve LTE. Checked my apn settings and they are fine. Changed my build.prop to kltetmo (since it said att). A worker at this phone store said it might have been my baseband because it was at ND3, so I got it to Ng3. still didnt fix it and got 4.4.4 which changed it to oa1. Nothing is working.

If your phone:
1. Has G900AUCU2AOA1 and AT&T 4.4.4 installed and your Network Mode is set to LTE/WCDMA/GSM auto; and
2. your GF's G900T phone sitting next to yours shows About>Status Network = T-Mobile with Mobile network type= LTE and yours does not; then
Your AT&T modem does not connect to the TMO LTE channels used in the area. OR there is something broken in hardware or software on your phone.
Sorry, but have little more to offer because of my limited toolset. Perhaps others can help.
I began with totally stock ATT G900A and moved to TMO last October in Nor Cal. Had LTE from the get go, no problems other than poor coverage compared to AT&T at my home. Rooted in early February and installed Safestrap. Then ran stock AT&T with LTE until I upgraded modem, kernel, et al to OA1 and 4.4.4 last week with muniz_ri threads. Then installed Alliance B4 and now have faster phone with better reception and wi-fi calling! LTE solid the whole way where I had coverage.
Best wishes!

Struggling with the same issue. Bought S5 G900A locked to AT&T a couple days ago. So I rooted, updated to OC4, bought unlock code for $2 on ebay and inserted TMO's SIM - everything works but no 4G LTE (only 4G and it's definitely slow HSPA speeds) no matter what secret code or APN settings I use. I don't have "network mode type" or something like that in menu. BTW, in the same areas (SF, Berkeley, Sacramento) LG G4 D850 att model on same TMO's SIM showed 4G LTE all the time...
Open up the phone dialer and enter
*#*#4636#*#*
When you enter that it should bring you to a device service menu.
Check the preferred network settings there.
Make sure it is on one of the lte auto modes
Try that... maybe change it and see if it helps...
There is also some settings there in the menu on band selection I believe
Also.... it could be a problem with the tmobile Sim card... if the Sim card is not for lte then lte won't work.. maybe try a new Sim at tmobile if all else fails

I bought my N5 thu amazon and a soon to be returned Moto X thru Motorola. I am sending the Moto X back and want to try the N6. Any reason not to get it thru T-mobile?
Wifi calling, tethering, anything I will be left out of?
The main plus for me is from my recent issue with the Moto X. I had no roaming on the Moto X in Canada. T-Mobile tried to help me out but took them 3 days to verify nothing was wrong. Found out I needed to create a new APN. After doing so and confirming it was correct with Moto cust. support it still did not work. Had I not been within my 14 days I wouldn't be able to return, if same happens thru T-Mobile they would replace.
Wifi calling is said to be here hopefully before Q1 ends. Thats a month or so left. I got my 32 variant in store so im not sure how tmobile is dealing with the N6 shimpments. In short, i dont see why you would have a problem getting it thru Tmo.
i bought mine over the phone, and got it shipped next day, back in november. im paying $27 a month for it, and am very happy with the n6 and tmobile
So the only benefit Amazon has is a 30 day return vs a 14 day.

APN's won't help make roaming work, unless you are only having problems obtaining data service. The APN settings are ONLY responsible for the DATA portion of the connection, and can't even be tried until after the phone is already connected to a network.
In Canada, a tmobile sim will roam on either Wind (same AWS spectrum as tmobile US) or Rogers (different frequencies from tmobile, but same as ATT). It is *unlikely* that you would be able to obtain any LTE service in Canada, Wind doesn't have any, and Rogers has everything completely screwed up. As a Wind customer, I am *supposed* to be able to roam on Rogers LTE when outside of my area, but it just does not work.
So to obtain service in Canada, you would need to make sure that your phone isn't forced/restricted to LTE. To obtain data service, you would have to make sure that you have selected TMO's UMTS APN, not their LTE APN.
Yeah, I was on both Rogers and Telus but needed to roam on the 2G network. I was in country just a couple days and didn't need the LTE, plus it they don't have it way up north where I was at. I am with T-mo specifically because of the free 2G roaming they offer. The new APN was supposed to resolve the problem specifically for 2G roaming. I think now I'll exchange the MotoX and ask for an extended trial since I will leave the country again in a couple weeks. If that doesn't work I'll give the Moto a try. It's the same as the Moto but if I buy N6 thru T-Mobile they will be responsible for assuring the 2G roaming features work.

Alright you guys, I opened up a line with T-Mobile since they have good roaming deals. I took my moto x (xt1053) to the store, everything working. But when I go to mexico, I am not able to connect to any networks. None. Zip. Nada. I even called T-Mobile but they kept saying that I have the Verizon varient since I mentioned I got the gsm unlocked Dev edition. They said because my phone isn't compadable with the bands in mexico yet I have used my phone with movistar.
I flashed back to stock hoping it would be the ROM but nothing.
Can anyone help me? It would be a shame if I can't roam. Funny thing is that when I had movistar, it would roam with T-Mobile.
ROM will not change the core frequency. It completely depends on what freq bands your phone has and what service providers in mexico use

I noticed the same thing the other day while in TJ. I have an XT1060 but switched from VZW to T-Mobile recently. Since switching I had successfully roamed in baja a few times using 4.4.4, but since upgrading to the leaked Brasil 5.1 release a few weeks ago it no longer works. However, my wife also has T-Mobile but she has the same phone as you, unlocked XT1053 and she can't roam anymore either. At first I thought it was just me, but her phone exhibits the same problems as mine and she is completely stock. When we're roaming, it will show that I'm connected to movistar, however if I go to the connection status it says something to the effect of "no service/no connection" under connection state and I do not have a valid IP address (either ipv4 or 6). My wife's phone exhibits the exact same issues. So it looks like it will authenticate with the movistar network, but for some reason is not being given an address.
