[Q] How are you using your Galaxy S5? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

Hi everyone,
I've been lurking on the xda forums since I had a pocket pc in 2007/8, but I rarely post at all. Though I think its amazing how prolific the users are on the forums. However, I have been surfing the Galaxy 900a forum for quite a while, reading on updates about the phone's rom, bootloader lockdown and the like. it's a bit unfortunate we won't be able to use the phone, like the galaxy s2 (Still my favorite phone to date).
So I have a question for everyone: Is anyone actually using the modified touchwiz roms found in the android development, or are you using stock with root? And I guess a followup question I'd like to ask is, if you're okay with how the phone's android development turned out. Just curious.
Thanks,
Americo24

I'm just fine running the stock rooted deodex. I use TiB to freeze most of the Samsung/ATT apps and replace the launcher and keyboard to Apex and SwiftKey respective. In the past I had a Nexus 4 and ran Paranoid Android, so I've used both flavors of Android. To me as long as it works good I'm happy!

rooting galaxy tab

Hi i have a galaxy tab on t-mobile uk, my question is as anyone from the uk rooted ther tab and what with, plus have you had any problems after rooting
thanks
Hi, there's a few threads on this, just grab z4root off the forums and you're good to go! First thing i did when i got my Tab. Im having a few issues with widgetlocker as the tab lock screen comes back now and then and i occasionally get notifications that it has been given superuser access. Everything else has been fine though - all I've really done is get ad free installed and cifs working though, not played much yet.

Thanks for your reply, maybe you can help me also with this as im simlocked to t-mobile uk, can i still do firmware update by using odin and firmware from samfirmware
thanks
Sorry, I've not looked into all that, my Tab is sim free and i use it on wifi. Haven't popped my desire sim in it yet or looked into getting another contract. The tab is basically a web tablet for me as well as media and apps and the main places i use it have wifi (or i can use my desire as hotspot).

[Q] Spring Galaxy Tab crashing?

I just got my tablet yesterday and it seems to crash pretty often... it would vibrate once, freeze, then vibrate a few more times before it freezes and FC whatever I'm doing.
What should I do?
(From what I can tell, the sprint version is the least popular version )

Try to root it first, and change your rom and kernel. Did you install any applications or whatever that are, well, funny?
Moved to Q&A.........
Nope no funny stuff, completely stock. A lot of people have problem roofing the sprint one after ota so I didn't bother... guess I'll give it a shot.

[Q] Should I get galaxy tab?

Hi dear!
I'm currently using Nexus S but I want to get galaxy tab!
I used to have iPad 1g and it was quite useful for study and web browsing.
I miss my iPad right now but I have not budget t.t
So I just want to get galaxy tab as a phone and a tablet pc.
I have some questions so please answer me asap before I make a decision!
1. how is the battery life? (compare to smartphone such as nexus s)
2. How is the internet browsing? (compare to iPad, does it have lag when scrolling?)
3. as a phone, is it okay? (I heard when calling, can use a bluetooth earphone)
4. is it fine to read pdf files? (as I'm a student so I need to read some pdf files and ebooks in galaxy tab.)
5. Skype has been updated hence is video chat working on galaxy tab?
Please reply me I don't mind whether or not it will be updated to honeycomb if it works well as a phone, an ebook reader and a multimedia device.
oh should I root it for better performance or is it okay with a stock rom?
1. 8 hours flat out depending how you use it 2-3 days if you leave it alone.
2. Depnds what browserdolphin browser hd is the fastest.

3.as a phone its ok if you use earphones or handsfree but impractical without them as you have to hold it upside down with the screen pointing away from you.
4. Yes you can as long as you get all the free adobe stuff of the market.
5. Yes you can video chat now although it's a bit pixilated and laggy.
6. If you want extra functionality or to install custom roms boot animations and have full control over it, root it with superoneclick, you can get superoneclick from shortfuse.org
NOTE: ROOTING WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY.

Okay thanks for reply
but I saw the stock browser on gingerbread is blazingly fast!
should I use the third party app?
Btw, I read that if I root, I can also do video chat on google talk, is it right?
two more! handsfree is in the original package or have to buy?
lastly, after rooting, how can I update OS although we dont know exactly when it will come out?
Stock browser is very fast but isn't tabbed and dolphin browser is which is slot faster.
Earphones with a microphone come with the tab but handsfree kits come separately and you don't need any kind of special one just one with bluetooth.

Yes you can video chat as long as the other person has a pc with a webcam or a rooted device with goggles talk on it.
For the last one that's a question to go to the development section but all I know is you need to get the files from there and flash them with odin there will usually be a guide that comes with it.
Hope you buy a galaxy tab or you might consider galaxy tab 10.1 (the ipad slayer)

I love my Tab. Do lots of surfing and reading on it. It's the perfect size (for my uses anyway.) Don't have any plans to replace my phone with it though, so can't say as far as those aspects go. If you can find one for $200 or less, it's a steal and well worth the money.
Definitely

But in New Zealand where I live, tab p1000 brand new is still 640 and only wifi version is 500. Is it worth if I use it as what I stated on the above? Hm..

i recently got my samsung galaxy tab and it's the best device i had ... with custom rom i use overcome rom and the battery life is really great .. the best size for a tab as you can hold it with one hand while going out and even to use it as a phone .. many many apps and games are optimized for it ... great Tablet indeed ..

Tapatalk Free from Samsung Apps

Samsung recently released a version of Tapatalk HD for the Galaxy Tabs.
Catch is it is not available in the US or for wifi only devices. If you have a 3G 8.9 and not in the US. Check it out

Or just go here to download directly.
great .... I'm going to try ......
not a lot of HD/tablet optimisation to speak of.
looks like the original app most of the time.
they could have done a far better job of it imho.
are there any forum app alternatives for tablets that actually make use of the screen space?

I would like to know about the alts you are asking about as well. However, it is still pretty speedy even though it closely resembles the origional app. Feels much quicker to me. Worth grabbing since its free.

is there a way to get this to work on one of the ics roms?
i made a backup on 3.2 and then tried to reinstall it on ics but im getting fcs all day long (was to be expected going from one version to another)
any other ideas how to get this working on ics?
Oh awesome, I was worried when moving from iPad to Galaxy Tab that there would be no Tapatalk HD, since all the other Android tablets I've seen running it are using a stretched out mobile version.

it worked on my 3.1 stock and 3.1, 3.2 overcome ROM's
i couldn't get it to work on my ICS one's
1) Shouldn't this thread be posted under Galaxy Tab 8.9 Themes and Apps?
2) Tapatalk HD is not compatible with ICS, but...
3) XDA Free is.
Learned my lesson: Read the posts properly. I'm Wi-Fi only. Bah!
i wonder why this keeps crashing on ics
Keeps crashing when i try to enter login info at forums, on ICS, so I'm using the normal version.

Get the free XDA app from Android Market. It's Tapatalk for XDA only and it works fine in ICS. There's a link in my previous post.

Real reason to root the Nexus 4

Anybody have one besides for development? The Google representative here at Best Buy is arguing that to him, he sees to reason to root a nexus phone because its already AOSP. I watched the new XDA video on it and showed him but he feels he isn't missing anything worth it.

Rooting will allow you to install some apps that require root ie. TitaniumBackup.

How else would someone use rooted apps?
Titanium backup, adaway, even cerburus offers better protection on rooted devices.
Maybe you want to do a nandroid backup, flash ROMs, kernels, tweaks etc

So it can grow when water is added to it.
Nandroid backups...
"Because you can"
AOKP, Cyanogenmod, etc.

I tried that a while ago. He said "android already does that, when I logged in it downloaded all my apps" i tried explaining that he had to download them and with titanium backup it saves your settings and everything and you don't need data, but he didn't listen saying he was on WiFi and something else. And he says he's okay with the virus protection 4.2 offers.
I just figured out why its useless talking to him though. He's a iSheep. He only has a nexus 7 and 4 because Google gave them to him.

Well if someone is completely against rooting and doesn't see any benefit in it, then he will be happy even with a iPhone.
No need to argue about the missed possibilities

Titanium, file access, being able to remove system apps, there are many reasons to root besides developing..

Adway is my number one reason. I can't stand ads anymore. They are everywhere! on the internet browser, games, radio and apps. Adaway gets rid of all of them. Makes me enjoy my nexus phone so much more

I'm tired of flashing ROMs, after a G1, Vibrant, Galaxy Tab and GS2. I'm currently happy enough with proper unskinned, pure Android on my N7 & N4. I don't feel compelled to root either one. It sounds like some of you think that makes me a bad person! LOL
My old Galaxy Tab is on CM9, used by my 7 y.o. son. The GS2 is on CM10, used by my 12 y.o. daughter. I consider both more imperfect combinations than 4.2 on my Nexxi. Great, best options for their hardware, but the Nexxi are superior. My daughter wants an N4 when they're back in stock. I now want a N10 to complete the trifecta.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
yah its user preference. Some people get tired of flashing ROMs, like myself and in the end of the day I just want phone to work reliably. BUT i am rooted!
I love the aspect of custom kernels most. You can improve performance, battery life or even add features to the device.
Don't bother the guy into rooting. I've rooted since my Og moto droid. Back then you wanted more performance or features that didn't come stock. Aosp has hit a point where I don't need to root anymore. So many Roms out there that claim its been optimized, zipalinged , faster this and that battery this and that. It always ended up buggier than **** days later. Rooting takes time, research, more time.
4.2 has everything I need. I don't need ti because I don't need to wipe my phone. There are no preinstalled apps I need to get rid of. Tethering is included.
Android is about choice. Please don't label someone an isheep because they are happy with what they have.
Root is 1 file. Why not?
Modify clock speed
Modify the screen colors(Voodoo i think)
Performance gains(ext4, jit, etc)
Fix Bugs in stock Rom
Can fix compatibility with apps
Remove Bloatware if exists
Access to Root apps like ChainFire 3D
Titanium backup
Don't need anymore reason
