First, you shouldn't lie about something being wrong with your phone to get a replacement for normal wear and tear. Second, maybe take better care of your phone so it doesn't get beat up. But if you want to do it so bad, just deal with whatever kind of phone you get.

And yes, unless they do not have any refurbished at hand, which is pretty much never, you will get refurbished.

And yes, the phones are refurbs. Even if they don't have an identical refurb (same Moto Maker selections) they will ask you to accept a slightly different color before they offer you a new phone. Refurbs fall into a couple categories... primarily they are going to be 1) phones that were purchased and returned or 2) phones that were sent in for a warranty repair and replaced with another refurb. The first category is typically going to be free from wear and tear, but is often prone to minor defects like screen calibration issues, gaps in the body, etc... things that picky people would return the phone for. The second category will likely not have those issues, but will instead have wear and tear like minor surface scratches.
I have used my phone Insurance many many times back when I soft bricked my phone and had no clue how to return it back to stock. the best way to do it is to say that your phone is lost not stolen then you will be able to keep the one handset and then get a new one and they will ask you if you find your old phone to please return it but you and I both know that will never happen two phones are better than one. If you say your phone is stolen they will block your phone just tell them it is lost. And it sounds like you need one of those gigantic spongebob OtterBox cases.

I'd say it depends on how rare your phone design is. If you have black and black they'll probably give you a refurbished. If you have an odd combination then they'll probably make you a new one. I did an advanced exchange for a brick when upgrading and I got a new one (black with slate back 32gb). Although the top grill was loose and I had to glue it back. I wouldn't worry about nicks though. I've had mine for about three weeks and it's starting to look just like the old one. If you have issues then send it back otherwise it really isn't worth it.

Didn't know so many people were boy scouts about such a insignificant thing ....only considered because my warranty goes out it October why not take advantage and just get a new one but otherwise no I take good care of mine as all my phones it still looks great I'm just worried about getting screen burn in and other hardware problems after warranty is done

Screen burn in is not a hardware problem. It's normal wear and tear on an AMOLED display. Each display may be more or less susceptible to it, but given the right use pattern every AMOLED screen is going to develop burn in. If you wanted to avoid it you should have bought a phone with an LCD.
And it is significant because fraudulent warranty claims drive up prices across the board.

I think that if you have insurance you should use it you are paying for the service and when your new phone arrives you also pay for the deductible. If there's a way to get something free or close to nothing in this world I will do it. I'm sorry that the majority of the community doesn't feel the same

I have a Nexus One... and this is my 3rd swap. The phone I have now has a slightly more pink tinted screen than any other one I've seen. I ordered my 3rd swap, and it just came to my door. I opened it up... only to discover this one has a one spec of dust under the screen!
Why am I being sent defective or damaged units? Should I keep doing swaps until I get one that's normal? What do you guys think?

I can understand being picky about a product that you just shelled out $500 for. It sounds like its nagging you already and if you keep it, it will just continue to nag.

Sounds like you need to send back until your satisfied. However, dont be surprised if HTC gives you a more difficult response each time you swap.

I'm going to keep swapping until I get one thats normal. $570 should not be wasted on a device that can't even pass DUST INSPECTION. I'm actually sending back the swap I just got, and the rep said he will send me another after that one arrives to them. Another 1 week of waiting for a phone that might also have issues.
HTC, BRING IT ON! I have 3 months of summer vacation. I will keep swapping.
I swapped five (5) TP2s on sprint, the first of which was bought new without rebates. eventually the hard keyboard just quit working entirely. every swap I got back was an obvious refurb. squishy keys, keys that didn't work, rough slider, etc.
htc has no problem collecting five hundred bucks a year or so from me, but refuses to stand behind their products. it's unfortunate, but my fault for continuing to support them. too bad the other manufacturers are so far behind for android and winmo phones..
I also did a swap for different phone because i had the dust under the screen issue. I received the replacement, but did notice 1 spec of dust under this one too. I didnt let it bother me, but maybe I should. From shelling out $530 for a phone, i guess we should expect something that should be "perfect" before leaving the factory.

Anyway, get a microfiber cloth and wipe it down. You'd be surprised at how things look like they're under the screen, when they're really not.
If that doesn't help, no I don't think you should keep sending it back. As the previous person mentioned, it's like an itch you can't scratch; you'll always find something wrong. Get an Evo or Incredible if you can switch carriers. Otherwise, get a Backflip?

Ok here's the test: give the phone to a friend/family member/etc and tell them, "Inspect my phone; do you see anything wrong?"
If they can get the spec of dust without you saying anything, send it back. If they can't, just enjoy man. If it gets worse, then send it back. Remember, you have 365 days to replace it!
Yea, especially in the browser, when its all white, the dust is all black. I'm just anal about a $600 device being untested during QA. I guess I'll be keeping the one with the pink screen tint instead. Might swap after though. Again.
Okay here is my problem, the screen on my nexus one cracked (on the inside under the glass) twice in a span of 6 months and HTC is trying to make me pay to fix it. There is *absolutely nothing* that I can think of that can even possibly cause the screen to break. It cracked twice at approx. the same place near the TOP of the screen. I've been using cellphones for the past 13yrs, had 2 iPhones and none of them broke like this. Very bitter taste in my mouth after using the Android and HTC platform for the first time. As it stands right now, I would rather have an iPhone4 with a defective antenna than to have choosen Google and HTC.
So here is my question: How many people are having the same problem? If you see my same question in other forums, please don't answer twice. I am a real user, a real person. After people start responding, I'm going to forward my threads to the reporter at cnet that had the same problem to hopefully have Google recognize this issue.
*If you DO NOT have this problem, but have an opinion to post, I deeply appreciate your opinion, but please don't do it here. This is strictly to see how often this is happening to N1 users.*
i cracked my screen but i dropped it on concrete a couple times so i can not blame google/htc for that.
however since I am rooted and my warranty is already void I plan to change the screen out myself when the new digitizer comes in.

No, it's a polycarb, but not Gorilla. Also the OP described the display cracking, not the digitizer (glass on the outside).
I have owned my N1 for 6 months now. My screen has never cracked and it remains in my pocket most of the day. Including at work where I go back and forth from coolers to hot grills constantly.
I understand you don't want people to reply if their screen didn't crack, but you can't get a fair judgement of how often this happens if only people with cracked screens can reply.
Heres my update: After numerous emails and phones calls back and forth, HTC finally agreed to fix my phone free of charge.
My advice for ppl having the same problem: Be honest, tell them what happened. Stay firm but respectful. Make sure they understand your dismay, but do not make it personal - the person on the other line is just following company guidelines and doing their jobs.
I dont know what did it, cause first I was offered 20% off then 50% off the repair costs (which I still think is bullsh!t, if the customer is at fault, then he/she should pay full to get repairs, if the device is bad, then HTC should fix it for free to boot, not offering "discounts"). But the last message I sent to HTC before getting the free repair offer was I quoted the CNET reporter that had hers replaced for free as well.
My experience with their customer service? Seeing as how I finally got justice in the end, I'm a lot happier than I could be. But the process is far, farrr from easy and what it should be.
And if anyone is wondering, I'm selling my N1 as soon as I get it back. Cause from my experience, the hardware design is clearly faulty. If it can break once and twice, there is no doubt in my mind that it will break a third time.
Weird that the OP is the only one reporting a cracked screen twice, when it's even rare to hear a screen cracked once. Unless you drop the N1 numerous times that is. Now i'm curious how the OP handles his N1.

Just joking, I honestly don't know. I've scratched my screen (small scratches only noticeable when screen is black) but I've drooped it a few times and keep it my NWU (think cammo) pants pocket and no breakage yet.

I've dropped my N1 from about 10 ft in the air, whilst ghost riding my SUV. The top right corner is where contact was made with the asphalt. It came to rest face up. The only damage was a bit of a nick out of the metal where first contact was made. Thank god.
People, there is a piece of outer glass, called the digitizer. It's what you touch, it's the outermost later. It is both protection for the actual screen and the digitizer.
There is an inner layer which is the actual AMOLED screen.
Be clear what what's breaking. Is it broken on the OUTSIDE? Digitizer. Is it NOT broken on the outside but the screen "looks broken", is "bleeding" etc? Screen.
Too much nonsense going back and forth.. Particularly "I dropped it, glass broke, HTC sux" stuff.

It was a joke. I know it sucks for you but a vast majority of N1 owners don't have cracked screen which leads a reasonable person to ask first what the few with broken screens are doing different, if there is an environmental factor (heat change, humidity, etc.) Or in other words what is the common factor.

1. You're an idiot.
2. I dropped mine from chest height onto tarmac in a carpark, the top left corner took the brunt of it (was in the sleeve at the time, so bad luck) and it came away with a pretty small nick in the metal housing.
It now lives in a Tough Case.
Anyone else notice hairline cracks forming around their Moto X... I have a white X so it's a little more noticeable because the contrast (dirt). I have one at the top (center) near the headphone port, and two on each side of the volume rocker. This reminds me of the iPhone 3GS problems. Another question I have for those that DO have them, have you contacted Motorola for service/warranty replacement?
I've seen this on photos on swappa. When did a quick search, I found pictures of cracks by the headphone jack and around the sim cover.

Just an update;I got off the phone with Motorola warranty repair. They will repair or replace my device and send me a loaner in the meantime ( with a security deposit)...

I had the same issue with a white woven back. One by the sim tray and one by the audio jack, but they only really showed up once i removed the back cover. I've since swapped it out with a wooden back (Walnut i think?) where i haven't had any of the same issues.
I haven't noticed any. I waited a couple months to order my phone so it's not from the first run. Perhaps they improved the material later.
First run black VZ model here. I noticed a couple near the SIM tray. Think they showed up last month. Nothing major, but if it spreads... Then I'll look into warranty repair / replacement.

Are people with the problem storing the phone in a pocket where it gets stressed when you sit down etc? Obviously the casing is too brittle, just wondering if it cracking from flexing when in a pocket.

The Moto G's back cover is user replaceable, not the Moto X.

Yes, the majority of these cracks seem to be on the back cover. The back is not supposed to be user replaceable on the Moto X. It doesn't look to be too difficult to remove the back as it's just tabs and one big glue spot. Here's the iFixit teardown so you can see how to remove the backing.
Just an update;
So I've been happily using my loaner phone while my original X was being repaired. Today FedEx dropped off my original phone, un-repaired. Same hairline cracks, absolutely no changes to the phone. Called the warranty department, explained my frustrations, and the rep could only "speculate" that it wasn't repaired because they deemed it physical abuse yet, nothing in the repair notes state that.... While typing this reply, Motorola called me back asking if I wanted to keep the loaner phone instead of re-sending my original back in for repair. So after 2 weeks, a minor mess up on Motorolas part, I've got a brand new phone.
TLDR; after a slight hiccup, Motorola replaced my old phone with a brand new device.
So what should I do if I planed to buy this device? I don't eat a device that will crack without any reason

Mine has hairline cracks on the edge of the back cover. These happened from dropping it in its protective case. 0 damage on the actual phone except for these cracks.

i had one on the very back, up the V on verizon and it was about 1 1/2 inches long. told Motorola and i got a code for a new one. hope they can help you out!
So apparently my S6 Edge's screen cracked, edge to edge, precisely, diagonally UNDERNEATH THE GLASS..
This blows as basically Samsung won't do anything about it, ATT won't do anything about it. I won't be able to trade it in for ATT Next, and basically screwed the 914 dollars for this phone.
Sure the phone still works, there are no issues, but the crack is horrible to the eyes.
I can tell you as a first time Galaxy buyer, I already bought a LG G4, and plan on doing an insurance claim which will cost me 200 dollars and try and sell it or something, then I will never think about buying a Samsung device again. Poor quality control.
I am just saying, very disappointed with Samsung on this..

Yes, it just costs 200 dollars to use. I remember when insurance was only like 50 bucks.
I got an LG G4, Samsung agreed to replace the screen, so once I get that done I'm just going to sell the phone.

My phone was not in my pocket.
It was gently resting on a solid surface. I picked it up, used it, was fine, set it down, picked it up again, cracked screen. The screen looks more like a tension crack than anything.
Samsung said they might be willing to cover it under warranty since there is NO impact marks at all. So I shipped them my phone and I am waiting. If they don't fix it, I'll insurance claim it. Either way after all is said and done I will basically sell the phone as I bought the G4 and its so much better.
I'm a union laborer and keep my phone in my pocket at all times with just the slim grinke case and every once in a while I lean on it hard or something hits it I get worried look at it and it's always good
So Samsung just told me that YES the crack is only on the inside of the screen, that the screen itself does not appear to be damaged. However, they will not cover it under warranty.
I shall vow to never purchase a Samsung product ever again. This phone has been a nightmare when it comes to quality control.
Original cost was 235. With enough complaining I got it down to 108.
My S6 glass did get a thin crack from the right side of the home button to the edge of the screen after one day of use. Did not drop it, or any abusive treatment, the day I used it.(Kept in my jacket pocket when it was not in use)
Returned it to be checked and hopefully repaired, but no such luck. Got it back unrepaired and had to pay the cost for the check. (Explanation from the workshop was that the glass on the S6 does not break, and this was their first case, so no warranty repair)
Will check with Samsung directly, but based on the other posts in this tread i'm not to optimistic.

Just a comment to those with this phone that *haven't* had this issue, you have to remember that engineering and QC are essentially a numbers game. Areas that might have problems aren't going to go bad 100% of the time, even under duress.
If anyone remembers the days of bad pixels, they didn't happen to every screen. And the manufacturers were basically balance the cost of the technology, QC, and warranty claims. It didn't serve anyone for people to say, "But *I* don't have bad pixels," when others users are reporting that they are not only having bad pixels cropping up with new devices *and* the manufacturer told them to pound sand.
The edge screens are a new innovation and are going to have some sort of failure rate. Samsung can't produce hundreds of thousands of devices and not have at least one failure that had nothing to do with the end user.
This probably didn't pop up frequently enough (or at all) during testing and QC didn't have adequate means to identify devices that might experience this failure (perhaps due to the way the screen or display is mounted to the phone chassis) and, now that there are enough numbers in the wild, people are experiencing a problem that is clearly the fault of the manufacturer.
Samsung then compounds the issue by saying they won't fix or replace it under warranty.
That's pretty shameful. I say this as someone with a lot of Samsung devices.
Also, remember that Samsung has a pretty long history of defects that they wouldn't deal with under warranty. The original Galaxy S had GPS problems that essentially rendered that feature unusable on a large number of devices and Samsung did nothing and offered no warranty service despite it clearly being manufacturer defect.
Let's focus on the problem rather than tell people that are reporting it to stop wearing skinny jeans.
This same thing happened to me, I have a hairline crack going from the top left of the phone all the way down to about 1 inch from the bottom left, from the edge to just past the edge in a curve.
I never dropped the phone, and it's in a case... no marks on the case nor on the phone that would indicate it had a fall and I know I didn't drop it. And I don't wear skinny jeans either.
I am thinking there must be a design flaw on these curved screens (I notice the phone does get very hot when charging, and am thinking if there was a fault in the glass the heat from charging could have caused it to crack?) - anyone hear anything more on it, is it any more rampant than what has been discussed here, any signs of Samsung admitting there may be a flaw in the design and that they would cover it under warranty?

I had the exact same thing happen to me. It was only about a month after I bought it. Mine was just sitting on the table (face up) and I actually heard it crack. Made a "tink" sound. Never dropped it before and I'm very careful with my phone.

Damage is done. Figured I may take this "opportunity" to try another device. Obviously unlockable bootloader is required. I'll dig around on some of the other forums, but wanted to ask here if anyone has experience with the Moto X Pure or Nexus 5X? Those are the two that have peaked my interest so far. Thanks for any beta you can provide.
The Nexus will be more frequently updated than the Motorola device. However, other than the screen being an IPS LCD, the X Pure I feel is the better device all around.

Lol i was going to do the same joke
From my personal story i dropped my n6 one time doing my cardio jumping rope
Phone's screen just fall right on the floor tile... I immediately check
Camera ok, screen ok etc...
1 day after ive finally see that the top bar speaker, you know the little plastic thing, was pushed. So pushed that now the top bar speaker is nearly at the same level of the frame... And led still works
I think the ringke Max cover saved my screen and I'm loving much more my n6 and his scars.
Ps: I've by a Bluetooth headset after that

I would go with a 5x. I have had both and I currently use the 5x. It is a great device and I would recommend it to anyone. With a good custom ROM its bullet proof. Unless you drop it of course lol.

Yeah, I need something like that. I've actually cracked the screen 3 times. All of which were during periods I had the case off. Took if off to clean and lost a couple of the buttons in the case and just hadn't gotten around to ordering one.
So anyway, I just went ahead and ordered the Moto X Pure. I'll fix the N6 and maybe sell it to get a 5x too. Thanks for the feedback.
I just dropped my nexus 6, only 1/3 of the screen is lit and there's just a bunch of lines. I don't have enough money to buy a phone with equal specs. So how hard is it to replace the digitizer?

If you had a bad digitizer, your display would still function but touch inputs wouldn't register properly if at all. The AMOLED display is what is wrong with your device. Since digitizer and display are fused together, replacing the complete assembly is actually rather easy. However, replacement screens are not cheap. In fact, they aren't much less expensive than sending the Nexus in to Motorola and having them replace the screen for $175.
I'd like to chime in and make a suggestion.
Forearm curls.
This should help increase your grip so it won't be so easy to drop the phone.
Granted, it's an "over time solution". However, it should save some money in the long-run from lost/damaged phones.
That, or just superglue it to your palm.

It is quite easy to replace. There are plenty of video's on Youtube that show you how it works.
I bought a digitizer two month ago via Amazon. Had to release ~26 screws. Most sensitive part was to detach the connectors (very fragile!).
It went quite ok and I am now very happy with a full functional Nexus 6.
The digitizer did cost me $160,-. Quite some money, but better than a new investment in a brand new phone (A-brand).

I've repaired some phones in my time, but never in a phone that was pressed together with clips. I wasn't about to spend that money and possibly screw up. I went ahead and bought a HTC Desire Eye for $120. Maybe some day I'll fix the Nexus but no today

I broke one of these and I feel your pain. I ended up just buying another from Amazon and left the broken one in my drawer. If this other one manages to break I'll probably grab a 5x or something budget. I can't be bothered to pay $175 for the repair when Moto has awful customer support now and the phone is only worth about 200 total.
